I would like to remind everyone of the importance in having NCCC insurance and the importance in completing the waivers.

Following are excerpts from the Blue Bars winter edition, 2010:

One of the benefits that NCCC provides to constituent clubs is third party liability insurance. In the past, NCCC has contracted with K & K Insurance Group, Inc. What is third party liability insurance and what does it provide for?

Third party liability is insurance coverage for damages in case of a spectator’s bodily injury or property damage that is caused by a member or participants. The coverage provided by K & K is contingent upon having a signed waiver & release form that was completed before the start of the event.

At all NCCC sanctioned and non-sanctioned events participants and workers are required to sign a waiver. Why do waivers have to be signed and what does it mean?

NCCC participant legal liability coverage (the part of our insurance that protects you, the NCCC Member, if an injured participant sues) is contingent upon having a signed waiver and release form. For this reason, all participants, officials and casual workers must sign a waiver and release form at each event.

I’ve heard several clubs say they are not “racers.” All they do is hold shows (concours events) and socialize. Therefore, they have no need for third party insurance.

Not all accidents are related to speed events. In fact, speed events are usually safer than some other events. Speed events are usually well controlled. The course is laid out in such a manner as to take into account conditions that could lead to off course excursions…….

Some clubs participate in parades to celebrate certain holidays or to chauffer local dignitaries. At such events, there is little spectator control. Should an incident occur at one of these events, are NCCC members covered by NCCC insurance?

Again, there are a number of variables that would have to be considered that are beyond the scope of this article that could affect liability. The short answer is ‘Yes’, but the specifics of the situation would dictate ultimate liability. In any case, these activities should be treated as events, and participants, for example, those riding in club members’ cars in parades, must sign the waiver form.

I would like to encourage everyone to re-read the article in the Blue Bars 2010 winter edition. And for anyone in the club who is chairing any event, be it drive & dines, parades, luncheons, please have participating members sign the waivers. If blank waivers are needed, please contact me prior to the event or at any club meeting!

After each event the Governors are required to keep the signed waivers for a 7 year period. So, please turn in all signed waivers to me at the club meeting following your event.

I can’t emphasize enough the importance to the club of obtaining signed waivers for our protection.

I would like to thank the members that were able to help with our low speed event this year. The numbers were down this year due to conflicting dates with MIS and events in Indiana. We will look to change the date next year to avoid such conflicts and should have more participants. So mark your calendars for the first week next year in June. Again, thanks to all the workers!

If there are any concerns or questions regarding Michigan or NCCC rules and regulations, please email me at [email protected] and I will present them at the next region meeting or governors’ meeting as needed.

Respectfully submitted,

Mike Beery

It all began in the summer of 2005 when my brother showed up in his new ride, a red on red 1981 Corvette. He let me take it out for a spin and right then I was hooked. About a year or two later the car began to sit more and more due to the rising gas prices and the fact that my brother was putting in 12-15 hour days over seeing the construction of The Wild Bull. As the car sat, it began to be called home by several hives of bees. This is when I pitched my idea; in exchange for allowing me to drive the car, I’d get the bees out and ensure general up keep of the car. To this, he agreed. So I began driving the car more regularly in the summer of 2007. When it came closer to winter, when my brother decided to sell the car. Perhaps some of you saw the car sitting on W. Main St just eats of Kendall. However, due to the condition of the car’s body (if you are not aware, it’s a whole other story) he couldn’t sell it for what he wanted. Come the summer of 2008, my brother moved out of state, leaving our father to sell the car. I however, got to continue driving it. Finally, come fall of that year, I was able to pull together the money to buy the car. The Corvette has now become my daily driver for the summertime, doing as many repairs as possible. All four calipers have been replaced (one of them twice), power steering leak has been fixed, the speedometer has been fixed and the speedometer/tachometer lights have been replaced with blue LED bulbs, the brake/taillights are no LED as well, and many other smaller repairs have been done. The car is a project car and I am looking forward to learning about my car and working on it. While the body may not be in such great shape, it runs and drives and has been reliable to go to Battle Creek, South Haven, and or club trip to Emma, IN and that’s what is important. When all is said and done, I want the Corvette to be flat black, have black rims with red trim and keeping the interior red.

Since the above didn’t turn out as long as I expected, here’s the story involving the body. As I said above, the car was red/red when my brother bought it. He however, wanted the body black. My brother then set out and began sanding down the body in his driveway. He got it all down to the fiberglass, but from what I have been told he used too coarse of sandpaper and did not wet sand it. When he finished sanding it, there were very noticeable scratches in the body. That is when a friend of a friend stepped up and offered to paint the car. My brother took the car to the guy and left it with him. When my brother went to pick it up, the car was again, red. Further more, the guy who painted it didn’t fix the body! All of those scratches were now painted into the body. The guy didn’t remove the rear spoiler, so the seam was painted and quickly began to break and chip away at the seam. The guy also painted over the rear Corvette emblem and also got some paint on the headlights. The paint in general is now bubbling and chipping away. What really will throw you for a loop is that one of the rear wheel wells had a chunk broken off, but that was repaired so well that you can’t even tell it was ever broken! So how does someone do that good of a body repair and then do such a horrid job on a paint job?

So now that you know about the history of the Corvette, what is there to say about me? I am a night owl; I typically need to be awake for about an hour or two before I can stand the sight of another human being. I’m 25 and live in Portage. I am currently attending Western Michigan University and my major/minor is Criminal Justice/Sociology. I am looking to go through the KVCC police academy, but that is not such a sure thing. Either way, I intend to be done by the end of 2011. I attended KVCC prior to transferring to WMU. I currently work for Meijer as a grocery stocker.

… Larry and Pam DeLong

Larry fell in love .. with Corvettes! .. back in 1963 at the age of 15. A neighbor had purchased a new 1963, maroon Corvette with a 375 H.P. fuel injected motor. Sweet! In 1967 his buddy's aunt was selling a white, 1962 Vette with a four speed for $1,000.00. Larry drove this Vette with his buddy for about two hours one day in the Saginaw, MI, area. Having exactly $1,000.00 in the bank, Larry announced to his parents that he was buying this Vette. His Mom began screaming, "You will get killed bacause it has a fiberglass body". His Dad said, "No". Larry considered buying the car and hiding it somewhere, knowing that if he crossed his Dad that he would be in big trouble such as finding a new place to live and having to figure out how to pay for college. So over the years he rode in his friend's Corvettes and dreamed of having his own one day. Every week he would pick up the free Car Trader magazine and look for Corvettes. Finally, in 2004, we made up our minds to take the plunge and secured a home equity loan. We wanted a C-5 Vette after going to a dealer and driving one, but he wanted $5,000.00 more than our budget price. So Larry went on the internet and checked for all 1999, torch red, automatics, in a 200 mile radius. Lo and behold, one was located in Mundelein, IL, which is where his brother lived. He called his brother to check this Vette out. That same night Larry and I looked at a Vette in town, and when we arrived home we found four phone messages from (brother) Dwight: 1. "I am looking at the car and it's very nice"; 2. "I'm driving the Vette and it drives great!"; 3. "You'd better buy this car because I got them to lower the price $500.00 .. and I'll buy it if you don't!"; 4. "Call me tonight!" After calling him back he gave me the owner's phone number. Dwight told me the car was owned by a Polish couple who spoke very little English. "Great, just my luck!" However, they did have a daughter who spoke good English. I called and spoke with their daughter telling her that we would be there in two days to look at the car and if it checks out OK, I would purchase it. That Saturday we drove 190 miles to Mundelein to see this Vette. When in their garage looking at the car with the man and daughter the woman came out stating, "I am not very happy!" .. and went back into the house. Pam and I drove the Vette around their subdivision for 15 minutes and I was hooked! "We are buying this Vette!" Little did we know that this man and woman were not married and both names were on the title. The young woman was the lady's daughter. They had just purchased a new BMW and so the Vette had to go. The lady was very upset and it took both the man and daughter, speaking in Polish, to finally get her to sign the title. Away I went in the Vette with Pam following in the Grand Marquis, to face all the crazy drivers and traffic jams on I-294. I can tell you that I had three close calls of wrecking our new Vette before reaching Michigan, but we arrived home safely, after a 12 hour trip. That's our Vette story. It only took 37 years to get my Vette, and in October, 2004, we joined the Kalamazoo Corvette Club. We have enjoyed new friendships and taking part in club activities. The May, 2009, "Tail of the Dragon" trip was awesome! "SAVE THE WAVE!"

...Snippets of information from club meetings the past 50 years.

July 1963 … Ed Butcher gave a report on Elkhart Lake National Council Concours d’Elegance, where our club received 3 trophies and a ribbon. Jim H announced that DeNooyer’s is remodeling their showroom and if possible they will put in a trophy case for clubs use.

Ron Moerman proposed that the club find some means of making money. The selling of seat belts, and a booth at the fair were both suggested.

July 1964…Lenore Brady reported $383.08 in the Treasury. This included the $100 from DeNooyer’s for the convention. Lenore reported that DeNooyer’s will now put $10 to the treasury for each new Corvette bought from them by a club member.

Ron Moerman made the motion that new member balloting be by secret ballot. Lenore Brady seconded the motion. The motion was discussed and withdrawn. It was decided that the Board of Directors will decide if we will have a secret ballot for new members.

July 1965 …Terry Scott reported that we still had the Millberg track for August 1st. He reported that he could make the timing equipment. It would cost about $76 to put together, this included the watch. This time would be 90% fail proof. Lance Korzillius made the motion that we make funds available for the timer from the club treasury. Dave Delano seconded the motion. Motion passed.

The film, Sebring Sensation 1957 was shown.

The following people presented application for membership: Chris DeYoung, John Lapins, Jerry Snelling, David French, and Craig Clapp. Jim Downs made the motion that we accept all of them. Dave Delando seconded the motion. Motion passed.

July 1967…The old business consisted of the sprinklers broken at the June party. The person who ran over these sprinklers should make a claim with their insurance co; otherwise the club will have to take the responsibility. This matter should be taken care of immediately.

There was a discussion on the Rally put on by the Kalamazoo Sports Car club and everyone agreed that we should start attending their events when invited, so they likewise will turn out at ours.

New members voted on and accepted; Mr. & Mrs. Phil Hearld.

July 1970 The meeting was called to order by President Phil Hearld.

Phil said threat the timing light is open to anyone who can fix and complete it. It is altogether, but not working.

July 1972…Don Heisler presided as chairman for the committee to limit membership. The matter was opened to the floor for discussion. Jim Downs stated that he is against limiting the membership because it would eliminate our chance of getting good members. Mike brooks stated that by limiting the membership we would be limiting the potential of the people in it. Roger Person stated that putting restrictions on membership will kill the club. Jack Stevens stated that the people have lost the true meaning of the Corvette Club – it’s purpose is not to have parties, but to promote interest in corvettes. Denny Gruizenga stated that we should dwell more on the way of keeping the members we have active. Charles Bell as a new member remarked that it would be more encouraging for new members to volunteer as workers if the older members would get behind them as assist them with events. Phil Hearld felt that every new membership should be voted on by secret ballot. Also, that the restrictions for membership should become rougher, and that the majority of the club members should know the applicant before they vote them in. Don Bisceglia stated that we should make it more difficult to become a Corvette Club member. He put his idea into the form of a motion:

1. That we change our voting of new members to secret ballot. 2. That the applicant not be at the meeting when the voting takes place, but both sponsors are there. 3. Sponsors have to be there to clarify their application and be responsible for the returning to the

results of the voting to the new member.

Dave Delano seconded the motion. Said motion will be published in the July newsletter and voted on at the August meeting. After introductions we continued with new business. Jack Fuller brought up the matter of 18-year olds being able to enter the club. A discussion followed and the matter was dropped.

Jim Downs stated that he feels the club dues should be double what they are because the dues are so cheap, it is too easy to become a member. Jim made a motion that dues be raised to $30 to join and $24 to

10

renew. Dave French seconded the motion. Because this motion constitutes a by-law change, the motion will be published in the July newsletter and voted on the August meeting.

Phil Hearld then made a motion to the effect that the first year dues must accompany an application for membership and is to be refunded only in the event that the person is rejected for membership. This motion was seconded by Jim Downs. This motion also constitutes a by-law change, and must be voted on at the next meeting.

July 1973 … Phil Hearld, Governor, announced that the 1st place trophy winners from the GM Khana in our club were;

1. Stingray modified – Larry Morrison 2. Super Stock – Dave French 3. Stock B – Bill Siebel

After some discussion it was decided to have our August 2nd general meeting on a pleasure boat on Gull Lake. Sponsors for this combination meeting-event are Dave and Marge Delano. A paper was passed for those who wish to attend to sign up. Cost is $3 per person. The boat capacity is 50 and this amount signed up. It’s BYO with snacks provided. There will be swimming also. Parking is at Yorkville School. Time is from 8-11.

July 1975 Jon Coe reported on September 7th speed event. This will be held at Kalamazoo Speedway. More details will be available at the August meeting.

A ruling was made by the Board that no jacket patches, window decals, club shirts, etc, shall be sold to anyone unless or until they are fully paid member of the club. Judi Heisler stated that Antenna flags have been ordered and will take approximately 8-12 weeds for delivery pending no delays. Also, another order for club shirts will be taken at the August meeting.

July 1984 The first annual KCC Cruise Night on June 9th was a great success. About 17 club cars showed, along with Jim Robers and his many Chevy’s. Prized for the best dressed boppers were as follows: Female tie for 1st went to Sandy Ormaovich and Dawn Zimmerman. Tie for 2nd went to Sandy Dewar and Elana Siebel. Male: 1st place went to Phil Hearld and his chains. 2nd place went to Mike Duggan with his argyle socks. 3rd place went to Jim Bartel.

For anyone interested on Friday, July 20th, will be drag racing at Martin.

The club will have a new club banner for the convention this year. It will be 4 feet long – Navey blue with white lettering. Kalamazoo Corvette Club, with NCCC member.

Dave Zimmerman would like the club to draw up a letter to send to our congressman, not to ban regular gas. According to Blue Bars, the congress is trying to pass a law to quit selling any regular gas.

July 1985 Dave Zimmerman reported there were 19 cars at the June 7th event at Kalamazoo Speedway and that afterwards they went to big Boy’s. For Cruise Night, June 8th, there were 30 cars. First place in the spark plug contest went to Dave Volosky and second place to Rich Ormanovich. In the hula-hoop contest, Donna, a guest of Jim Burkett, was first and Cindy Marcelletti was second. There were 20 cars for the June 22nd dune buggy rides.

Bill Siebel received his trophy for winning his class at the speed event and Kathie and Gene Brundage received their first place trophy for the May Rally.

July 1986 June 7th cruise night, Dave Zimmerman reported that 20 cars showed up in spite of rain earlier in the day. He had brought along pictures of the evening event. Best dressed wnet to Bob and Rose McAdams, they were presented with a picture taken by their car in 50’s dress. Thanks to Mark Doolittle for entertaining us a Rollerworld.

July 1987 Linda Hearld reported on the Cruise night in the absent of Dave Zimmerman. Everyone had a good time, best dressed went to Karen Douglass and Phil Hearld. We cruised down Westnedge then back through Kalamazoo, then after a few Chinese fire drills it was on to Vicksburg for their old fashion days. Sandy Ormaonovich won the hoola hoop contest and Phil Hearld won a Frisbee. Dave Zimmerman arrived; he said everyone had a Great Time. Limbo contest was a dud, really just too much for some. Dave also said Linda Herald’s record time will be 13.42 in the quarter mile. Great job Linda.

July 26th Spina bifida camp at Miracle Camp in Lawton would like us to come out and give rides to the children, anyone interested in making a child smile contact Sandy Ormanovich or Linda Hearld.

Calling All Caravanners!

Although the next caravan is four years away, the time will pass so rapidly we will wonder why all the planning didn‘t start in 2009. 2014 Caravan Chair, Paul Mariano, has put together some information to get the ball rolling for the caravan and we'd like to share that with you!

"I am soliciting inputs from all those who would like to captain a caravan segment in 2014, both past and future captains. If you felt like your area of the country was not served by an authorized caravan and you think an added segment is warranted, let me know. If you are a past captain and wish to assume the task again, let me know. If you weren‘t a captain on the last caravan, but would like to lead a group this time, let me know," said Paul.

Please continue reading Paul's letter on our blog. You may also contact Paul with any input directly via email at: [email protected].

Kentucky Teen Loans Stingray Skateboard Art to NCM

The National Corvette Museum received a unique and interesting piece of art for display on Thursday, June 10. Harrison County High School Senior, Tyler Hardin presented the museum with a skateboard bearing artwork of a 2011 Stingray Concept Corvette in multiple perspectives.

Tyler was first given the skateboard by members of the Harrison County High School ―Skaters with a Purpose‖ club (S.W.A.P.). The club gave out 13 boards to multiple artists around the county and some to other states. ―I am a diehard Corvette fan, so I figured that this was one way to show it,‖ Tyler said. ―Beneath the center image is the reflection, which is that of a 1965 model and the top right hand corner is a 1969 model, but it‘s all

about the 2011 model,‖ he added. Read more about Tyler and his art on our blog

12 Is Chevrolet Dropping The Name 'Chevy'?

If you read the June 9th issue of The New York Times you might think so, but our friends at Chevrolet tell us that's not exactly true. According to Harlan Charles, Chevrolet Corvette Product Marketing Manager, they are now using only the name 'Chevrolet' with formal corporate communications to stay consistent globally; however the name 'Chevy' is still also welcomed publicly.

"We are just saying we sign our name consistently as Chevrolet but our friends can still call us Chevy," said Charles.

Ceremonial Bill Signing Held at Corvette Plant

Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear visited the Corvette Plant in Bowling Green, Ky. on Tuesday to ceremonially sign House Bill 104, which designates the Corvette as the official state sports car of Kentucky.

"You know it's an icon, it's known all over the world and the amazing thing for us is every one of them is made right here in Bowling Green, Kentucky. We want to brag about that, we want people to know it. And I think us declaring it's the State's official sports car is going to help even more all over the world," said Gov. Beshear.

Seeking 1964 and 1971 Dealer Brochures

The Library & Archives is in need of original dealer brochures for the years of 1964 and 1971. We recently had two donations of original dealer brochures and have combined the inventory and all we are missing are these two years. If anyone has these and would like to donate them to the NCM Library & Archives it certainly would be appreciated. Please send any donations to: Betty Hardison, Library and Archives Coordinator National Corvette Museum 350 Corvette Drive, Bowling Green, KY 42101

Wave "Rules"

by Dan Woomer, Lost Caravan Corvette Club

Ever since Corvette No. 00001 first met Corvette No. 00002 on the road, their drivers saluted each other with waves. There's one item of standard equipment that comes as a pleasant surprise to every new Corvette owner. It's an instant wave of recognition he or she receives when he meets one of their ilk’s on the road. The first time it happens, they will be taken by surprise. He immediately thinks: 1. He has been mistaken for Sterling Moss. 2. His lights are on. 3. He has just been given the bird.

Soon, however, the new Vette owner anticipates, indeed even relishes, encountering other Vettes as he drives. During this period, he experiments with his waves, running the gamut from the gaping "yoo hoo" to the ultra cool "two finger flip." He perfects his timing, making sure he affects neither a too-early wave, nor the jaded "oh brother" too-late variety. Determined not to be one upped, he even develops a defense mechanism for non wavers, usually settling on the "Wave"? My hand was just on the way to scratch my head" approach. (This is especially useful when you're not driving your Vette, but you forget, and like a dummy, you wave anyway.)

There is no excuse, however, for a guy who refuses to return the wave, not out of ignorance, but of arrogance or apathy. While this type of behavior is the exception to the rule, it seems a few owners of newer models refuse to recognize anything older than theirs, while some others simply won't wave, period. Boo on them. These ding-a-lings don't seem to realize that they are helping to squash a tradition that had its beginnings back when most of us were still driving tootsie toys.

The Corvette Wave is an integral part of the mystique and culture of the Corvette owner experience. Corvette owners, who wave at fellow Corvette owners when they pass on the road, show a mark of recognition that you are among the elite group of intelligent people who are driving America's True Sports Car. And as a member of this elite group, you should be recognized for your poise and intelligence. So for those who don't know the five simple Corvette Wave rules, here they are:

1. There is no excuse for not waving at your fellow Corvette owner. Although most Corvette owners have the class and understanding to accept when their wave is not returned, not waving is a serious breach of proper Corvette etiquette.

2. Whoever sees the other Corvette first, starts the wave. There isn't any rule about who waves first. This is simple; if you see another Corvette, wave!

3. Rules 1 and 2 apply to both sexes. As far as who starts the wave, it doesn't make a difference if you are a man or women. Rules 1 and 2 apply.

4. Any type of wave is okay. Whether you shoot a big wave up through your open Vette top, out the window, or a quick salute with your hand on the steering wheel, any wave that can be seen by the other Corvette driver is okay. However, this does not include any style of jester that can be interpreted as obscene or insulting. Remember, Corvette owners are a class act; while someone might have been rude or stupid to you, try not to return the favor. (This is a tough rule not to break with all the stupid drivers who manage to get a driver's license.)

5. A late wave is better than no wave. If you suddenly realize that a Corvette driver is passing and waving at you, get a wave off as soon as possible. The other Corvette driver may see your wave in their rear view mirror and realize that you where just a little late in getting your wave going. Although missing the timing of your wave is a "goof," getting off a wave that the other Corvette driver has a chance to see can acceptably cover this slip-up.

So you can see the underlying concept here is simple: Wave at your fellow Corvette owners, whoever they are, whenever you see them. This will show you are a person who understands the full measure and etiquette that comes with your proud ownership of a Corvette.

Kalamazoo Corvette Club is planning a club drive to cruise in night, July 21st—

Gilmore Museum Cruise In—Meet at the Meijer‟s on Gull Road at 5:45.

Test & Tune/ Wild Wednesdays

These are evenings the track is open to anyone and everyone to race down “The Fastest Track in

Michigan!”. It doesn‟t matter if you are driving a fast racecar or “mom‟s grocery getter” anyone can drive

down the racetrack. These events are offered on specific Wednesdays and Fridays. The open Test & Tune

evenings on Wednesdays are named Wild Wednesdays, CARSTAR Fridays are Fun „n Grudge and once a

month during the Fun „n Grudge US 131 features a Midnight Madness. There are at least two Wild

Wednesdays per month, several Fun „n Grudge and one Midnight Madness event.

Spectators only $5 and just $15 to race! Participants will not want to miss these bargain nights. The US 131

Motorsports Park staff will be available to assist anyone interested in learning more about drag racing and

bracket racing. We will run open time runs for the first part of the event. Drivers will then be able to place a

dial-in on their car, if they choose, and run just as if they were running in an actual bracket race. All just for

fun to see who can take the win light! Gates open at 5pm, racing from 6pm to 10pm.

Kalamazoo Corvette Club Outing is planned for Wednesday, July 28th.

RACC

Racers against Childhood Cancer

Fund Raiser A fifteen month old little boy was diagnosed with Leukemia. In order to combat this cancer he was given an experimental drug that had not yet been approved by the Federal Government. The little boy died just after his third birthday. At that time, he was given 1/100th of the same drug that is saving children’s lives today. The little boy’s name was Brian Oman, my older brother. Through research more and more children are surviving this deadly disease.

Dear Friend and Family,

On September 12th 2010 I am racing in a “little” event called Ironman, in Madison Wisconsin. (2.4mile swim-112 mile bike-26.2 mile run = 140.6 miles) In honor of my brother Brian, I have committed to raising $1500 and I will be representing Racers Against Childhood Cancer (RACC) in all my events this year. I joined RACC because I believe in the great work they are doing; RACC not only helps fund research, but helps to comfort children during treatment.

As you see from my own personal story, research is very important. Cancer not only affects the child, it affects the entire family.

The Ironman is a one day event, childhood cancer is not.

You can help by making a donation. Suggestions for donations are: pledging a $1 a mile for my Ironman 140.6 miles= $140.60 or 50 cents a mile = $70.30, or a set amount such as $50. Every dollar counts in the fight against childhood cancer. No donation is too big or small.

I would really appreciate your help and support on this mission to help end childhood cancer; please donate generously.

To make a donation online go to www.januscharitychallenge.com

Here is a cap that matches our club coats. This cap is available as is (with car) from Corvette Central (www.corvettecentral.com #105929 for $15.95). We are also looking to find a cap that we can have embroidered with club logo. Some examples were shown at Wednesday night’s meeting. Michelle from Decorative Thread will be able to embroider the club logo or 50th anniversary logo on a cap.
