Dalareich Polot, General Manager of Dalareich Choco-late House and CEO of Ginto Chocolates, wins in the worldwide search for APEC Business Efficiency and Success Target (BEST) Award for “Best Family Sup-port” during the Women and the Economy Forum in La Serena, Chile.

Dalareich’s business model presentation was done via Skype, where she was competing with nominees from twenty one (21) other APEC economies. In her presen-tation, Polot narrated her romance with cacao and highlighted how her passion for tableya has developed over the years beginning when she was a kid.

It may be recalled that Polot had the big break in her chocolate journey when she joined the Young Entre-preneurs Bootcamp in Manila in 2013, which was spon-sored by the Samahan ng mga Pilipina sa Reporma at Kaunlaran (SPARK!) and the United States Embassy, where she emerged as the Grand Prize Winner and received $5,000 and a trophy. Polot is the current Chair of the Bohol Cacao Development Council.

Feature Story

A huge typhoon hit Dumaguete City in 2011, which devastated a great part of the impoverished community near the dumpsite. American volun-

teer, Whitney Fleming saw the effects of the devastation prompted her to seek another source of income for this community. She founded Lumago, an up cycling enterprise that comprised mostly of the affected garbage gatherers that lived near the “gold mine.” Lumago, a visayan word that means “to blos-som.”

With meagre funds, the artistic women of the community learned to roll papers and made them into beads which later were made into necklaces. These dedicated and determined women continue to make beautiful pieces which Ms. Fleming would sell to local resorts. The demand of these products could not sus-tain the project, thus they sought other market and decided to move forward, and Lumago Designs, the social enterprise was born—a cooperative between the Lumago ladies and owners Becky Stanbridge and partner, Spen-cer Dempsey.

With the new owners, Lumago Designs ex-panded from paper beads to other up cycled materials that includes pull tabs from cans, patterned used or discarded fabrics, soft leathers from old wallets and bags, recycled bamboo and torn out magazine pages. Most materials are sourced locally, adding income to the community. The design of each piece is one of a kind. A product of the artistic imagi-

nation of the Lumago ladies.

“We are very passionate about every-thing that Lumago stands and strives for, Lum-ago would not exist without its strong belief. We support these women not just by paying them fair wage but by investing profits back into the community so they don’t have just a job, they also have a livelihood. All the designs are born from the minds of the women themselves, we provide them with workshops, design days, and materials to help enrich their inspirations, which means when you buy Lumago, you are not buy-ing a mass produced item, you are investing in one-of-a-kind piece of art, “the owners, Becky and Spencer stressed.

Lumago Designs is a recipient of DTI assistance and programs. They have joined various market-ing events like Manila Fame, Regional and Pro-vincial Fairs. They also availed of the One Town One Product Next Generation packaged of interven-tions and have been promoted through market development events.

Today, Lumago is not only a social enterprise that produces quality, artistic, one of a kind piece of fashion accessories but a symbol of hope, determination and dedication that one can rise above adversity. #

ANews Bits

On October 30, Cebu City joined 66 cities desig-nated as United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Creative Cities by the Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay.

Cebu City is now officially part of the UNESCO Creative Cities International Network under the design category.

As explained in the UNESCO website (https://en.unesco.org), the UNESCO Creative Cities are laboratories of ideas and innovative practices that bring a tangible contribution to achieving the Sus-tainable Development Goals through innovative thinking and action.

Through their commitment, Creative cities from all continents and regions with different income lev-els and populations are championing sustainable development actions that directly benefit commu-nities at urban level.

“All over the world, these cities, each in its way, make culture the pillar, not an accessory, of their strategy,” says UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay. “ This favours political and so-cial innovation and is particularly important for the young generations.”

With 66 new creative cities this year, the UNESCO Creative Cities Network now counts to a total of 246 cities all over the world.

As stated in the website, UNESCO Creative Cit-ies Network members work together towards a common mission: placing creativity and the cre-ative economy at the core of their urban devel-opment plans to make cities safe, resilient, inclu-sive and sustainable, in line with the United Na-tions 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Develop-ment.#

News Bite

Atbang Farm’s tablea is named one of the Philippines’ top five tablea drink during the recently concluded Ka-kao Konek 2019, the biggest annual event of cacao farmers and chocolatiers in the country. A total of 38 entries from all over the country participated the first ever National Tablea Drink Contest and had their tablea chocolate drink entries subjected to taste tests by more than 30 jurors from all regions of the country, following specific set of rules and guidelines set by the

event organizers.

The conference, dubbed as “Filipinas Tablea and Chocolate Expo and Cacao Conference” was held last October 17 - 18, 2019 in Davao City, and was orga-nized by the Philippine Cacao Industry Development Council (PCIDC) in partnership with the Cacao Industry Development Association of Mindanao, Inc. (CIDAMI). More than a thousand attendees from the 14 regions in the country attended the event which was held at the

SMX Convention Center in Lanang.

This year, 12 Women Micro Entrepeneurs (WMEs) participated in this 2-day activity allowing them to net-work and appreciate innovations and development directions for the cacao industry in the country. Their participation was made possible with support from the Provincial Government, the Department of Trade and Industry and the Department of Agriculture through the

Great Women Project 2.

One of the highlights of Kakao Konek 2019 was the awarding of the Top 5 Philippine National Tablea Drink. Months back, the province of Bohol through the prodding of the Department of Trade and Industry to-gether with the Bohol Cacao Development Council sent 5 entries to the said contest to include the follow-ing firms: Atbang Farm of Ms. Efrenia Holt, Calape, Bohol, Balai Cacao Enterprises of Ms. Marie Frances Macabenta, Manga District, Tagbilaran City, Audrey’s Bakery of Ms. Audree Arellano, Panglao, Bohol, Canjulao League of Women, Jagna, Bohol and Auro-

ra’s Tablea of Ms. Gina Solis, Loay, Bohol.

Miss Efrenia Holt, owner of Atbang Farm shared her farm journey, which started when she planted cacao trees in 2011 at her farm in Calape, Bohol. However, these cacao trees were almost wiped out during

Bagyong Senyang and were also affected by the 2013 7.2 mag-nitude earthquake that hit Bohol. These and many other chal-lenges allowed her to continue her passion on farming and hav-ing seen the market demand for dried and/or fermented cacao beans, she took it as another business model and opportunity for community based livelihood endeavors. Atbang Farm Mold-ed Tablea has been developed and is now being marketed in malls and in select Hotels and Resorts in Panglao and in Tag-

bilaran City.

Atbang Farm is one of the twenty five (25) WMEs enrolled with the Great Women Project 2 – a Government of Canada funded project on “Supporting Women Economic Empowerment in the Philippines.” This project in Bohol is organized and managed by the local Department of Trade and Industry. A number of tech-nical support and extension services are being provided to the project enrollees to include among others, technology replica-tion through skills trainings, enterprise management trainings, marketing support, product development, packaging and label development, networking and resource mobilization, raw mate-rial sourcing, FDA LTO and CPR registration to name a few. These extension services are designed to ensure their business

sustainability using various business models. #

Ms. Efrenia Holt of Atbang Farm received the Award for being one of the Top 5 Philippine National Tablea Drink. Handing the award is the Philippine Cacao National Council Chair Mr. Valenti Turtur together with Ms. Charito Puentispina of Malagos Chocolates and DTI XI ARD
