Committee Business:
• Murray will follow up with the possibility to replace the current key-locked light switches in the toilets with push-button time delay switches. Keith Willans will also load-test the faulty power point in the center shelter.
• The committee has received a quote to install the first-flush devices on the new water tanks. The work will go ahead in due course.
General Business:
• Dave Trewarn attended the January committee meeting to put forward redevelopment ideas for KAMS field. This involved extending the flying surface, potentially putting in a second car parking area whilst enlarging and squaring up the existing car park and creating a water pond at the northern end of the property for floatplane flying in winter. All this is conditional on the amount of sand that may be available for excavation from the field whilst having a minimal impact on the long-term use and enjoyment of the field. Any enlargements to car parking areas or roadways will also need dressing with road base to make them useable in winter.
Dave will firstly sample the soil in the field to see if there is available sand for the project in its entirety and will report back to the committee with his findings.
These plans were discussed at the General meeting for consideration before any work is undertaken.
There was little support for a water pond for float flying, but overwhelming support was placed for the construction of a second car park and an access road to join the two car parks. A map will be circulated to the membership showing a rough outline of the proposed changes.
• Incident at field – a visitor’s car was damaged in the car park. Ongoing investigations are not proceeding well as no one wants to come forward and make statements to help in the investigations. A claim has been made to MAAA for the cost to of the visitor’s insurance excess costs. Murray is following up with this matter.
General Business: Cont:
• Response from Kevin Dodd re: heavy models flying uncertified are that all parties, including clubs and its members could be open to litigation in the event of an accident with an uncertified model. KAMS has a duty of care to ensure that all members are adhering to the rules and only flying heavy models that have been properly certified and signed-off.
A proposal was put forward from Murray that a ledger be kept at the field wherein all heavy and/or gas turbine models are recorded so they can be referenced where necessary to see if a model flying at the field has current certification. It is expected that the owner of the aircraft and/or the (KAMS member) inspector will maintain the ledger. The KAMS committee, safety officer and heavy/gas turbine inspectors will have access to the ledger when required.
A new by-law will be added and will read as:
3.17 HEAVY MODEL AND TURBINE CERTIFICATIONS All fixed or rotary wing models weighing over 7kg to 150kg and any turbine or Pulse Jet models must comply with the MAAA MOP/s applicable to that model before being flown at KAMS. In addition to the MAAA MOP requirements, a KAMS Model Register is held in the Canteen and all Endorsed Pilots with such models are required to ensure the details of their aircraft certification/s and/or re-certifications (Permits to Fly) as the case may be, are recorded within the Register for all models they currently fly at KAMS, prior to any flight taking place after initial certification.
Members and or Guests may be asked to show the certification documentation before being allowed to fly at KAMS. MAAA Inspectors and KAMS Committee and the KAMS Safety Officer have the right to ask any person to show proof of certification before flying may take place or continue. In addition to this any event Contest Director may at the event ask for proof of certification. It is the intent that all models of these types would be registered within the club register and as such officials would check the register firstly, before enquiring of any member about certification paperwork.
Gary Herren proposed the by-law, Ken Heinz seconded. The by-law will published in the February Slipstream newsletter and will be voted on at the February general meeting.

ENTER THE M.A.N. PLANS
PHOTO CONTEST! Show of hands: how many of you have built a model from Model Airplane News plans? Enter our photo contest and show off your creation! We don't care how old your plane is, or even if it's still flying ... we just want to see your photos! There's just one rule: the plane must have been built from a Model Airplane News, Electric Flight or Backyard Flyer plan. That's it! This is your chance to get some cash and MAN "swag," so find those photos (or scan in those prints!) and enter today. You can enter as many planes as you'd like, and the editors will choose the winners from the planes with the most votes. The contest will run through February. TO ENTER, CLICK HERE»
HOW TO: ADD FLAPS TO YOUR FOAM WARBIRD Kick your foam warbird up a notch by adding flaps! The techniques shown here upgrade a P-47 Thunderbolt that has optional functional flaps (an upgrade available on many small electrics). The flap outlines are already molded into the wing so it's easy to figure out where the flaps belong. FOR MORE, CLICK HERE»
BIG — REALLY BIG! — BRITISH PLANES
Our friends across the pond love their (really) giant-scale models, and this video compilation from a recent show is a treat to watch. Videotaped by the father and son team of Pete and Dean Coxon at the Large Model Association fly-in at Cosford, this shows some fantastic models flying in quite a crosswind. FOR MORE, CLICK HERE»
DRILLING AND TAPPING WORKSHOP TIPS One of the first non-wood building tasks that will present itself to RC modelers is "Drilling and Tapping" holes in metal parts. Mainly this is required for attaching your glow engine to your aluminum motor mounts, but the same process is used when drilling and tapping hardwood blocks for nylon wing hold-down bolts. SOPWITH CAMEL WORKSHOP BUILD-ALONG -
FABRIC COVERING TIPS Now that the Sopwith Camel's fuselage and the rest of the project has been all buttoned up, and the engine cowling's magnetic attachment arrangement taken care off, we can how move on to the covering process of the project. For this model, I am using Scale Stits, Polytone paint and adhesive. The fabric is specially produced for RC airplanes and it is the same material (just lighter), that is used to cover full-size aircraft. FOR MORE, CLICK HERE»
