THEORY OF OPERATION
TheKAMHomogenizerisdesignedtodisperseandemulsifyorganicandinorganicmaterialsinaliquid/liquid,liquid/solid,orsolid/solidstate.Ithasthenecessarytorquetoprocessdifficultsamples,andbecauseit'slightweight,itcanbeusedinamountedpositionforhands-freehomogenizationand/orasahandheldhomogenizer.
Duringoperation,themediumtobeprocessedispulledintothebottomofthetubebytherotorandforcedoutthesidesthroughthestatorslots.Thestatoractsfirstofallasanidealflowbreakerandprevents,toalargeextent,therotationofthemedium,allowingtheintroductionoflargemechanicalenergiesinaverysmallspace.Thevortexformationcommoninstirringisgreatlyreducedbutcannotbeavoidedaltogether.Intheshearinggapbetweentherotorandstator,approximately1000timesmoreenergyisintroducedintothemediumthatwouldbewithstirring.Theparticlesarepulledintothecenteroftherotorandthenforcedradiallyoutward.Inthisprocesstheparticles,byhittingsharpedgesandbycavitation,arereducedinsize.Itusuallytakesonlyafewminutestoobtainafineparticlesizereduction.Longerprocessingtimesachieveonlyaninsignificantimprovementinparticlesizereduction,whileincreas-ingthetemperatureofthemediumthroughtheenergyinput.
