    THE VILLAGEORGANISATIONAL/CULTURAL STRUCTURE

Community is led by the Tok Batin/Penghulu Johari together with JKKK members such as Mary.

The village leadership has been cooperative in working with us and is welcoming to external support.

However, it is still important to respect the hierarchy of leadership within the village and always seek consent from them prior to making plans to avoid misunderstandings

Water is of very poor quality and is piped directly from a river. The river has been polluted and has heavy sedimentation due to a farm set up by the river.SYABAS has installed a water supply station in the village. However, villages cannot afford the RM800 installation fee and only very few have clean water.

TNB provides power lines into village. Villagers pay rates and tend to not use electricity unnecessarily.

However, this is only limited to the existing settlement and does not extend into newly cleared land areas.

    THE VILLAGESHELTER

Villagers say shelter is the biggest issue in their community.

Overcrowding in particular affects many households, with as many as 4 families sharing a home.

There is a disparity between PPRT /Zakat built brick homes and self-constructed wooden ones.

Some villagers have tried to build new homes but lacked funds to complete their projects. Some have erected precast 4x4” concrete columns and this can be seen throughout the village.

  • COMMUNITY ISSUES

    Shelter Sanitation

    Water

Primary issues highlighted by the community were:

    1) A lack of housing to accommodate the number of emerging families within the community

    2) Need for repairs of roofing for existing homes3) Poor water quality which may be potentially

contaminated and unable to afford clean water from SYABAS

    4) A lack of toilets and sanitation facilities

  • FOCUS: Shelter

To this date, many families have appealed to JAKOA and other organisations for housing aid but JAKOA has only been able to provide housing on a very sparse basis.

Villagers have reached out to EPIC for support and are aware of due processes, with 46 families having appealed.

In the meantime, some villagers have attempted building new homes and extending their existing ones but due to resource constraints, are unable to produce sustainable solutions.
