Tradit ional Craf tsPassing on traditional craft skillsDuring the Edo period, supported by the abundant wealth of the Kaga Clan, great efforts were put into cultural development. As a result, significant advances in the level of traditional arts were achieved and these master crafts were passed down through the generations, becoming a source of great pride for Ishikawa Prefecture.
Yamanaka lacquerwareA major feature of Yamanaka lacquerware is the manner in which the natural beauty of the grain of the wood is utmostly preserved. This requires great skills with the traditional revolving wheel saw.
Kutani porcelainKutani porcelain is famous for its daring designs and elegant colors, It has been exported to foreign countries for about 100 years and has gained great popularity.
Wajima lacquerwareThese lacquerware items are representative traditional Japanese lacquerware with a solid feel and an elegant beauty. There are 100 processes required in making this item with each one done carefully by hand. Besides traditional tableware and flower vases, interior items and display panels have recently come into popular use.
Kaga embroideryThe art of craft embroidery developed from the embroidery skills used to decorate Buddhist altar fittings and cassocks for Buddhist priests. At the present time, these skills are used for the decoration of “obis”,kimono sashes and “kimonos” where fibers are arranged forming a magnificent 3-D picturesque design.
Kanazawa lacquerwareThis traditional lacquereware craft has been passed down from the Edo period. It features the creation of single unique pieces of tea ceremony, room furnishings and other high-class lacquered furniture items.
Ushikubi pongeeThis is a silk weaving craft that has been passed down in the area around the foot of Mt.Haku-san all processes are carried out completely by hand. From the stage of drawing the thread from the cocoon and the thread dyeing to the weaving stage.
Kanazawa gold leafOver 99% of the gold leaf made in Japan is made in Kanazawa. It is less than 4/10,000mm in thickness, and a high level of technical expertise is required to make it.
Kaga yuzen silk dyeingKaga yuzen silk dyeing is a represen-tative traditional Japanese dyeing art. The designs render natural beauty realistically and are described to possess a samurai-style serene elegance.
Kanazawa, Nanao, and Mikawa Buddhist AltarIn the homes of Busshist families, there are family Buddhist altars for displaying Buddhist mortuary tablets and Buddhist statues. These altars are made using traditional crafts such as gold-leaf, sculpture, and lacquer decoration.
Kanazawa Castle ParkKanazawa Castle Park is an open green space, preserving the historical and cultural heritage of Ishikawa for generations to come. Many castle structures, such as the Hishi-yagura, Gojukken-nagaya and Hashizume-mon, have been restored to their former glory. This restoration project was the biggest of its kind ever attempted in Japan since the Meiji period (1868 ~ 1912).
Kanazawa
Kanazawa, which was once a feudal castle town, is home to Kenroku-en Garden – one of the three most famous gardens in Japan – as well as many historic districts and cultural assets. It is also the main city of the Hokuriku region that brings together the best of the old and the new.
Kenroku-en GardenWith its great natural beauty augmented by the four distinct seasons of Ishikawa, Kenroku-en Garden is regarded as one of the three most beautiful gardens in Japan and designated as a Special Historic Site by the Japanese government.
Higashi Chaya DistrictHigashi Chaya District is where, even now, the appear-ance of the old streets still exists and has kept its old face. When evening approaches, the sounds of the shamisen and Japanese taiko overflow from the tea houses.
Naga-machi Buke Yashiki DistrictIf you rove around the back streets from the center of town, you can easily find Naga-machi Buke Yashiki District situated inside a complex stone-paved district reminiscent of the old castle town. This is the site where the samurais of the Kaga clan once lived and where you can recall the atmosphere of the feudal times.
Omi-cho MarketOmi-cho Market in Musashigatsuji has served as the kitchen for the people of Kanazawa for approximately 270 years. There are 170 stores inserted into the small alleys where fish from the Sea of Japan, local meats, vegetables, fruits and seasonal foods are at the center of the trade that occurs here.
KorinboKorinbo is one of the most prominent shopping and entertainment districts in the Hokuriku area. Its bustling streets are lined with department stores, boutiques, restaurants, and drinking places.
Making Gold LeafNinety-nine percent of Japanese gold leaf is high-quality leaf produced in Kanazawa. Here you can witness the process of making gold leaf, watch a leaf of gold being beat to a thickness of only 0.0001 mm, and try your hand at making gold leaf decorations.
Kanazawa Hyakuban-gaiThis is the area inside Kanazawa Station with all the shops and restaurants. Here you can find all kinds of souvenir items, traditional crafts and Japanese confectionery. There is also a post office and an English-supported tourist informa-tion center.
21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art Kanazawa21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art Kanazawa, which opened in 2004, is a new cultural hotspot in Kanazawa. As its name suggests, modern century contemporary art is the main focus of this Museum. It’s a museum with a new sense that not only displays paintings and sculp-tures but diverse expressive modern works as well.
The Motenashi Dome of Kanazawa StationThe symbol of Kanazawa Station’s East Plaza is the Motenashi Dome, which conveniently functions as a giant umbrella shielding visitors from rain, which is quite common in Kanazawa. Looking from the front, one can see a big, tall wooden gate that resembles a hand drum.
The Noto Peninsula
The Noto Peninsula has two faces: while its west coast is rough and wild, the east coast is soothingly calm. Noto is famous for its Kiriko festivals held all over the peninsula during the summer, and its famous Wakura Onsen resort.
Wakura OnsenWakura Onsen resort is a 1,200-year-old, harbor-facing, Japanese-style hotel filled resort that offers visitors an unparalleled Onsen experience. Gazing out at the calm waves of Nanao Bay while soaking in the Onsen is simply amazing, don’t you think?
Chirihama Beach DrivewayOn the west coast of the southern Noto Penin-sula lies the unique Chirihama Beach Driveway that is 8km in length. The fine-grained sand on this beach has become impacted through its absorption of seawater so much so that automo-biles can run on top of it. During summer, the beach is bustling with bathers and is very well known throughout the country.
Mitsuke-jima IslandThis rock island is located about 200 meters offshore and is also known by the name of Gunkanjima, or the battleship island, since its shape resembles a battleship.
