Kaneland Harter Middle School Spring Sports
Orientation Thursday, March 21
Sportsmanship• Failure to display proper sportsmanship may result in
a student not being permitted to further participate in athletics for up to one year, or as listed under the attendance policy
• If character is what you do when no one is watching, then sportsmanship is that conduct with everybody watching. Bob Ley
• Kaneland Harter Middle School Athletics strives to:– Build a successful and competitive program– Learn fundamentals of track and field– Embrace and respect competition– Build a cohesive program from community feeder
programs to Kaneland High School– Help students understand the role of sports in
their lives
Athletic Goals
Expectations as our athletes leave KHMS• Proper warm up and cool down, including an active or dynamic warm up each day• Form drills used in practice and knowledge of what good form looks like• Form drills used as a part of competition• How to warm up before a race, when to warm up, what to do in between events• We want them to understand that track is a team sport and by the time they get to
high school they are expected to stay until the end of the meet unless they have a legitimate excuse for leaving. We encourage our athletes to stay until the end of the meet to support their team.
• We encourage athletes to try different events. They are going to grow and change and what they are good at now might be different when they are fully grown.
• We want our athletes to pay attention to teammates in other events• 400 is a sprint not a distance race• Practice is an essential element of this sport• Key elements such as flexibility, strength, speed, and injury prevention come from
doing the little things at home and at practice• Track is a sport about setting personal goals and having everyone being successful
Expectations as our athletes leave KHMS
• All jumpers should know how to get steps, how to measure them out, and have a standard starting point for jumps
• Relays need to include handoffs that are executed the same way as the high school teams. This would include the use of markers and getting steps all necessary for handoffs.
• Come out of a starting block for any race 400 meters or less• Attend a high school home meet if possible• Boys – April 20 Girls – April 6 or 13

At it’s June 2012 Board of Director’s meeting, the IESA adopted a new rule in regards to participation in club or AAU sports. Basically, the participation requirements are now totally set by the individual school district.
Individual coaches already have rules in place in regards to attendance, etc. Those stated rules will now be followed with no exceptions.Resulting discipline based on the type of infraction. In all cases, school contests supercede “club” activity
