Conveniently located one hour south of downtownChicago, the communities of Kankakee County areafforded a small-town sense of living, all withcomplete access to the amenities of a large city.

Kankakee, Bourbonnais, Bradley, Manteno and Aroma Park are allstrategically positioned off I-57, which runs north to south,offering an easy connection to Chicago, and several points in

southern Illinois and eastern Missouri. The area is also served byU.S. Route 45/52, and State Routes 17, 102, 113 and 115.

In addition to the Kankakee County’s advantageous highwaysystem are several other means of transportation. The River ValleyMetro furnishes the community with affordable and convenientfixed-route bus service to destinations throughout the county,while Greyhound offersregular service fromKankakee’s Economy Inn,2125 S. Schuyler, to sitesoutside of the area, includingChicago, Champaign,Springfield, St. Louis, MO,and Memphis, TN.

Commuter and regional railservice is also available here.The Kankakee Amtrakstation links riders to morethan 28 downstate cities andthe city of New Orleans viatwo routes. Metra commuterrail service is provided innearby University Park. RiverValley Metro affords a route between Bradley and the UniversityPark Metra station, where riders reach downtown Chicago’sMillennium Station in just one hour.

As for air service, the Greater Kankakee Airport has two runwayscapable of handling business jets and personal aircraft. Commercialflights are available through two Chicago-based airports, includingMidway International Airport, situated approximately one hourfrom the area, and O’Hare International Airport, which is 1.5hours away.

Education is of the utmost importance to those living inKankakee County. The region is spotted with a collectionof daycare centers/preschools, public school districts,private institutions and higher learning facilities. All ofthese resources come together to create a strong learning

community complete with educational opportunities at every level.

EARLY CHILDHOOD, PRIMARY & SECONDARY EDUCATION

Kankakee County supplies a number of options when it comes toeducating our youth. An assortment of daycare and earlychildhood education centers are available for busy parents lookingto start their children off on the right foot. In Kindergarten,students enroll in one of four public school districts in the area,including Bradley Elementary School District No. 61,Bourbonnais Elementary School District No. 53, St. GeorgeSchool District No. 228 and Kankakee School District 111, or oneof several private and parochial institutions.

Secondary education is mainly provided through KSD 111 and theBradley-Bourbonnais Community High School District No. 307.BBCHS is equipped with a highly qualified staff and features acollection of diverse curricular and co-curricular offerings. Amongthe many notable opportunities supplied to students at BBCHS

are a college prep program with 25 dual-credit and AdvancedPlacement courses, a comprehensive fine arts program andvocational and work-study programs through a collaboration withthe Kankakee Area Career Center. At BBCHS, the faculty, staffand community all come together for one common focus. AtBBCHS the students come first.

HIGHER LEARNINGKankakee Community College, atwo-year junior college, is a topchoice for graduating high schoolseniors, adult learners andemployers, as it offers a catalog fullof credit and noncredit courses invarying areas. In addition togranting associate degrees andcertificates for both transfer and workforce entry, KCC providesopportunities for continuing education, workforce developmentand pre-college remedial development.

Located in Bourbonnais is Olivet Nazarene University (ONU), afour-year, private, Christian, liberal arts university dedicated tostrong values and excellent education. With enrollment reachingclose to 4,600 undergraduate and graduate students, ONU strivesto provide an exceptional learning experience by offeringassociate’s, bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees.Approximately 100 fields of study within four schools and onecollege are available to students attending the university. ONU alsooffers continuing studies on all degree levels. One of the topNazarene universities in the country, ONU draws students fromacross the country and other parts of the world.

Further options for higher education lie within surrounding areas,including Governors State University – a public universitypositioned approximately 25 miles north of the Kankakee area inUniversity Park. GSU offers a total of 50 degree programs at bothundergraduate and graduate levels, as well as 23 certificateprograms and plenty of noncredit options. GSU works closely withKCC by supplying the Dual Degree Program. This valuableprogram enables students to complete an associate’s degree at KCC,then transfer seamlessly to GSU to complete a bachelor’s degrees.

Kankakee County offers countless recreational activitiesfor the whole family. Through well-maintained parks,trails, golf courses and modern facilities, staying active iseasy for residents of all ages and abilities.

The Kankakee Valley Park District manages more than 30 parksand facilities in Kankakee, including the new Washington SkatePark, Bird Park Family Fun Station, Ice Valley Centre Ice Arena,Splash Valley Aquatic Park and the expanding River Road Park.The latter is an award-winning park featuring the PNC Bank RiverRoad Softball Complex and, new in spring 2012, RV and tentcampgrounds and an off-leash dog park.

Thefarm offers four miles ofpaved multi-use paths, OakMeadows, an Indian cavegeological area, a fruitorchard, rose gardens,picnic areas, playgrounds, aliving history farm and theExploration Stationchildren’s museum.

The Kankakee Area YMCA operates a well-equipped facility thatrecently underwent a renovation and expansion project. The Y,along with numerous other fitness centers in the area, includingRiverside Health & Fitness, Fitness Premier in Bourbonnais andManteno, Studio Fitness, Impact Fitness and Body Works forWomen, provide modern amenities and excellent programming toaccommodate every fitness need.

All of these resources come together to offer hundreds ofoutstanding recreational and enrichment programs for youths,teens and adults. From aquatics instruction and sports leagues tosenior activities, day camp and arts classes, there’s something foreveryone through the Kankakee Valley Park District, BourbonnaisTownship Park District and Kankakee Area YMCA. In addition,

the River Valley Special Recreation Association joins forces wit thearea’s park districts to provide year-round, community-basedtherapeutic recreation to residents with disabilities or special needs.

Opportunities for enjoying outdoor recreation are availablethrough several other sites throughout the county, as well. The4,000-acre Kankakee River State Park, positioned just six milesnorthwest of Kankakee, is full of history and outlets for enjoyinghunting, fishing, canoeing, camping, picnicking, horseback ridingand hiking. The Forest Preserves of the Kankakee River Valleyoperates six sites in the area, including the Shannon BayouEnvironmental Education Center, Aroma Land & Water Preserve,the Gar Creek Trail & Prairie Restoration Site, the WaldronArboretum, Strasma Grove and the Limestone Reforestation Site.Additionally, Kankakee County hosts three fine golf courses –Kankakee Country Club, Oak Springs Golf Course, KankakeeElks Golf Club, Aspen Ridge Golf Course, Manteno Golf Courseand South Shore Golf Course.

The Kankakee County area is bursting with culture,featuring a fantastic mix of entertainment venues, eventsand performing and visual arts organizations.

Catch a movie at Cinemark Movies 10 Theatre at theNorthfield Square Mall in Bradley, the Meadowview ShoppingCenter Theatre or the historic Paramount Theatre – a fullyrefurbished 20th century theatre. Or, for those partial to livetheatre, make sure to check out the Kankakee Valley TheatreAssociation (comprised of the Kankakee Valley Theatre and YoungPeoples Theatre) and the Acting Out Theatre Company, a troupethat presents summertime outdoor theatre at Perry Farm.

The Kankakee Valley Symphony Orchestra also has a strongpresence in the area, performing at various sites, including OlivetNazarene University’s Centennial Chapel. The university’s LarsenFine Arts Center, along with the multipurpose Majestic Theatreprovide further sites for enjoying live entertainment in KankakeeCounty.

The Community Arts Council ofKankakee County strives to promote,develop, coordinate and stimulateparticipation in the arts throughoutthe area. There are plenty of interesting things to see and dothroughout the area. From places of history toprofessional sports, it is enjoyable spending a day out andabout in Kankakee County.

Explore the history of the area through the Bourbonnais GroveHistorical Society’s Letourneau Home Museum (the original homeof the community’s first mayor George R. Letourneau) and theKankakee County Historical Society Museum. Both museumshouse distinct local artifacts and archives. The KCHS also recentlyopened the Kankakee County French Heritage Museum in spring2012. The museum features a great collection of French historyfrom both Kankakee and Iroquois counties.

Additional historical sites not to be missed include the KankakeeRailroad Museum, the Bronte History of Printing Museum, FrankLloyd Wright’s B. Harley Bradley House and the county’s BarnQuilt Tour. This unique self-guided tour – the first countywidebarn quilt tour in the state – is comprised of more than 40 barnslocated across Kankakee County, all adorned with an 8’x8’ woodenblock designed with a colorful, hand-painted quilt pattern.

Visitors also take pleasure in local agri-tourism, as well as familyfun at the Hidden Cove Sportsplex – a year-round destination witheverything from basketball courts, an indoor soccer arena andbumper cars to miniature golf, batting cages, a go-kart track and apaintball field. The Exploration Station A Children’s Museum,based at Perry Farm, offers children the chance to learn throughdiverse hands-on experiences. Exhibits include a new multi-levelmedieval castle, an emergency room and ambulance, a sciencelaboratory and much more.

Sports enthusiasts don’thave travel to Chicagoto experience excitingprofessional athletics.The Chicago Bears haveheld their training campat Olivet NazareneUniversity for morethan 10 years. Eachsummer, thousands of fans visit the area to catch a glimpse of theupcoming season. With a major interstate (I-57) connecting the 60miles between Kankakee County and Chicago,the region maintains a strong economy withindustries in and aroundthe Chicagoland area. This
