The Douglas County, KS ARES group has had a fairly active 2009. We continued to support the Lawrence Half Marathon with APRS and voice communications. We also went outside of the 1B zone and lent assistance to other areas for various cycling events including the Topeka MS 150, Louisburg Cider Mill Ride, Kansas City Bikers for Babies and others. I would like to focus more on training and equipment this coming year, in an effort to prepare for future needs.

Most of the amateurs that check in to the weekly Sunday night net are drawn from our only local radio club, the Douglas County Amateur Radio Club (w0uk). The average number of amateurs checking in is about 23 per month, which is down from last year at 27 per month. We have set up a Yahoo Group called DG ARES to automate sending reminders and messages within the group. It currently has 36 registered members, up from 32 last year.

I am willing to continue for the fourth year of my appointment as EC for my zone. I have enjoyed my years in the ARES structure and am looking forward to the next year.

30 new hams were brought on board in December by the continuing efforts of hamclass.org. Many new recruits to help fill the public service call of 2010.

The extended cold & snow have kept a lot of folks indoors and in front of their radios, or winter projects.

January is the recognition season, when we demonstrate our appreciation for the many folks who step up to fill service roles within our organization. Be sure to attend our January 11 meeting to show your support.

January is also the time that Johnson County begins its annual weather training, be sure to join the K0ECS folks and get some fantastic training on January 26.

Till then, stay warm!
