The President’s Pen

Dear Angus Friends, Dear Angus Friends, As the saying goes, Where did the year go? We have had a good year in the Kansas Angus Association. We saw some changes that are working nicely. Our

new bookkeeper, Betsy Anderson will be at our annual meeting and banquet at the Futurity so I encourage you to meet her if you haven’t already. The futurity is a highlight for our year in the association with the annual meeting and banquet. The banquet will be where we award our pres-tigious Honorary Member Award, and have the Auxiliary and Junior auctions. Also that evening you will have the opportunity to purchase select pages in the Kansas Angus Directory and Kansas Angus News for this next year. It will be a great weekend to take in the scheduled meetings, get updated on American Angus Association happenings and take in the Junior Show. I hope you will plan to attend!

Angus industry News and information provided by the American Angus Association ® & Certified Angus Beef , LLC.

Angus Names Allen Moczygemba CEO Texas native to lead the nation’s largest beef breed organization Allen Moczygemba, a native of San Antonio, Texas, is the new chief exec-utive officer of the American Angus Association, effective Dec. 1, 2015. Moczygemba will serve as the chief executive officer for the American Angus Association and for each of the Association’s subsidiaries: Angus Productions Inc., Certified Angus Beef LLC, Angus Genetics Inc. and the Angus Foundation. He will also be responsible for implementing the Asso-ciation’s long-term strategic objectives and leading a team of more than 200 employees. The Association Board of Directors announced the deci-sion today. “This is a great day for the American Angus Association and the Angus breed,” said Steve Olson, Association president. “Allen not only brings a fresh, strategic vision to our organization, but also a detail-oriented, hands-on approach to leadership that will ensure our resources are focused on continuing to grow demand for Angus genetics and the Certified Angus Beef brand.” Moczygemba possesses nearly three dec-ades of experience in the cattle business, managing business units, over-seeing brands and building strategic relationships across the beef indus-try. He most recently served as vice president of marketing for Advanced Animal Diagnostics, a tech company developing on-farm animal-health diagnostic platforms. While serving as beef segment marketing director for Zoetis Animal Health and Pfizer Animal Health, he developed partnerships with organizations such as the American Quarter Horse Association, CattleFax, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association and the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. He managed Progressive Beef, a program of standard operating procedures for the fed cattle sector that includes an independent third-party audit. The program’s standards align closely with major retailers, such as Performance Food Group. Moczygemba also was senior vice president for Farm Journal Database Strategies and vice presi-dent for Farm Journal Livestock Group, where he was publisher of Beef Today and Dairy Today magazines. “AAA enjoys a long and successful history in developing innovative ways to advance the Angus breed,” Moczygemba said. “I am excited about helping to write the next chapter for the breed and blazing new trails of opportunity for our members.” Moczygemba received his degree in 1987 in agriculture communications from Southwest Texas State University. He and his wife, Venetta, have two sons, Lane and Ross.

Apply for the 2016 Beef Leaders Institute Submit applications by March 1 to be considered for the program. The Beef Leaders Institute (BLI) is a premier leadership experience for American Angus Association® members that provides a look into the en-tire beef supply chain, while enhancing participant knowledge of the Asso-ciation and strengthening their leadership skills. Angus producers between 25-45 years old are encouraged to apply for the ninth annual BLI sched-uled for June 20-24, 2016. Applications are due back to the Association by March 1. “The Beef Leaders Institute is an annual highlight, as we bring together Angus breeders from across the country for an in-depth look at our business,” says Jaclyn Clark, Association director of events and edu-cation. “Participants gain practical knowledge, valuable connections and a greater appreciation for the role of quality beef in today’s marketplace.” The program brings Angus producers together in Saint Joseph, Mo., for a series of informative sessions, followed by a three-day tour across several industry segments. During the event, BLI participants are able to tour a beef harvesting and packing facility, retailer, fabricator, feedlots and other industry segments, including the American Angus Association. Those selected will also learn about the ultimate end product — the Certified Angus Beef® brand — and how the branded beef program drives demand for quality Angus genetics.

“BLI overall has been an excellent experience, and I encourage other producers to attend,” said Jed Connealy of Whitman, Neb. “It’s a unique opportunity to see many different sectors of the industry, and most of the things we’ve seen on BLI are things you don’t just walk in and see by yourself. It’s a really neat opportunity that cattlemen on all levels should take advantage of.” The Association provides transportation, lodging, meals and materials during BLI. Attendees will be responsible for round-trip transportation between their home and either Kansas City or Saint Joseph, Mo. To apply, download an application at www.angus.org or con-tact the American Angus Association at 816-383-5100

Year-End News from the American Angus Auxiliary For more than 60 years, the American Angus Auxiliary has fostered valua-ble connections throughout the Angus business. By connecting likeminded women with one another, awarding Angus youth with scholarships or visit-ing with consumers about the Certified Angus Beef® (CAB®) brand, the Auxiliary invests much time and effort into the Angus breed’s future. Recently the group of volunteer leaders gathered for annual activities, always held during the Angus Means Business National Convention & Trade Show Nov. 3-5 in Overland Park, Kan. The Auxiliary hosted the organization’s Annual Meeting, Annual Breakfast, the Miss American An-gus competition, and many other social events. During the Auxiliary’s An-nual Meeting on Nov. 3, the group elected the 2015-2016 officers and regional directors. Members of the newly-elected officer team are: Presi-dent Shally Rogen, Brandon, S.D.; President-elect Julie Murnin, Huntley, Mont.; Secretary/Treasurer, Leslie Mindemann, Sullivan, Wis., and Advisor Lynne Hinrichsen, Westmoreland, Kan. The new president, Shally Rogen, Brandon, S.D., has been involved in the American Angus Auxiliary for nearly 20 years. Together with her husband, Dick, and two sons, Andrew and Alex, they raise registered Angus cattle in southeastern South Dako-ta. She has served as an Auxiliary regional director for more than three years, and has been an advisor to the South Dakota Junior Angus Associ-ation for 16 years. “The American Angus Auxiliary is really a blessing of friendship,” Rogen said. “It’s amazing how many friends you can make across the country who can get together and have that bond of Angus cattle and our children. It’s just the love of wanting to do more for our youth and the Angus breed.” Members are also proud to welcome Presi-dent-elect Julie Murnin of Huntley, Mont. She is a past regional director for the Auxiliary and a member of the Montana Angus Auxiliary, serving as the vice president. She and her husband, Jared, are advisors for the Mon-tana Junior Angus Association, and they have two children, Claire and Cooper. Leslie Mindemann, Sullivan, Wis., was elected secretary/treasurer. Leslie has been a junior advisor, Region 5 director, a leader in both the Wisconsin Angus Association and the Wisconsin Auxiliary Associ-ation and chair for the 2002 National Junior Angus Show (NJAS) in Mil-waukee. Leslie and her husband, Rick, have three sons. The retiring president, Lynne Hinrichsen, has served as president of the Kansas Angus Auxiliary, regional director for the American Angus Auxilia-ry, and is a member of the American Angus Association and Kansas An-gus Association. Along with her husband, Ron, and children, Cale and Eva, the Hinrichsen family raises Angus cattle on R&L Angus in West-moreland, Kan. The Auxiliary’s 2015 Regional Directors are: Region 1, Kathy Dubs, Montana; Region 2, Cindy Ahearn, Texas; Region 3, Karla Knapp, Iowa; Region 4, Melanie Kiani, Mississippi; Region 5, Deanna Hofing, Indiana; and Region 6, Gina Hope, Virginia. Regional Directors are a source of information for interested members throughout the country. ( continued on page 25 see Annual Traditions)

7HAR Honored for Historic Angus Herd 7HAR Harrison Angus Ranch has been home to An-gus cattle for more than 50 years. Herbert and Billy Harrison, Howard, Kan., began raising cattle as a result of their seven children’s 4-H projects. What began as a learning experience for the children grew into an operation that has lasted 50 years. To recognize their dedication to the Angus breed, the American Angus Association is proud to name 7HAR Harrison Angus Ranch as a Historic Angus Herd. The award is presented to Angus breeders or immediate families who have been in continuous production of registered Angus cattle for 50 years or more. Herbert Harrison chose the Angus breed, not only for its rich heritage, but also because his friend, Fred Adair, also raised Angus cattle. In 1965, Herbert bought his first registered-Angus female from Adair and joined the American Angus Association. The Har-rison’s foundation cattle were purchased from the McCurry Brothers and the Laflins in the 1960s. Their genetics include Sedgwick’s Erica 153, HMH Commo-dore 85, and the Adelette, Edwina, and Blackcap Ros-es lines. Herbert and his wife, Lula Mae, have seven children who have helped with the Angus herd through the years. They started using artificial insemination (AI) in 1973 using top Angus sires. Through the 1990s, the oldest sibling, Reed, selected the AI sires and genetics. Their 2014 bulls were sired by Final Answer, Connealy Irish, Connealy Thunder, Net Worth, and their own In Focus 3. They also used Zoe-tis 50K DNA testing. The family formed an LLC in 2009, and all seven sib-lings manage the herd alongside William Harrison, full-time herd manger (and the fourth brother of the fami-ly). The rest of the family work the cattle with him dur-ing weaning, syncing, vaccinations, and freeze brand-ing. The Harrison family continues to manage their seed-stock herd of 65-plus registered-Angus cows, consist-ently producing quality AI calves year after year, alongside quality calves from their herd bulls. Their passion for the Angus business, started more than 50 years ago, is sure to continue for many years to come. Visit www.angus.org for more information on the His-toric Angus Herd Award and view a list of awarded members since the program began in 1988. — Written by Melinda R. Cordell, Angus Media

The Kansas Angus Association board of directors recognized Robert K. (Bob) Bailey during the open Angus show at the Kansas State Fair. Bob retired as KAA treasurer and bookkeeper after 10 years of service on June 30, 2015. He was presented with a custom made buckle.

It is a new year which means new beginnings. Winter calves are arriving and a new show season is upon us. With that said, I look forward to seeing each of you at this year’s Futurity, January 22 - 23, 2016! The women’s association will hold their annual winter meeting on the

Kansas State Fairgrounds at 11:00 a.m. We welcome all women to join us in fellowship and leadership as we start this new year. During this time we will recognize our out-going Miss Kansas Angus 2015, Morgan Woodbury, and our candidates for the title of Miss Kansas Angus 2016. It is with great pride that we continue to support these young ladies as they represent Kansas Juniors and the Kansas Angus industry. The evening of the 22nd, we encourage everyone to take the opportunity to support our juniors as we hold the annual Auxiliary Scholarship Auction. This year I would like for all that are donating items, and those bidding, to know that it isn’t the quantity that matters, but the heart. Even if you believe that you’re too small to have an impact, consider trying to go to bed with a mosquito…! Even the smallest contribution can change the future of our juniors. The money raised during the auction will go towards funding future scholarships. Every “holler” from the crowd is a dollar of support! Megin R. O’Brien Kansas Angus Auxiliary President

Items needed for annual Auxiliary Scholarship Auction and Hospitality Don’t forget to bring an item for the annual Auxiliary Auction to benefit the scholar-ship program to be held during the Annual Banquet on January 23. Unique items with Angus or western themes as well as baked goods and hand crafted items usually sell well. Bring the item to the banquet with you . Hospitality The KAA Auxiliary will host hospitality on Saturday, January 23, 2015 for mem-bers during meetings and educational programs being held throughout the day at the Kansas State Fairgrounds, Prairie Pavilion. Please bring to snacks and baked goodies to Prairie Pavilion office by 10 am Saturday. There is no need to individu-ally wrap or bag.. Thank you so much for your generous contribution Tonya Theis, Ks Angus Auxiliary Hospitality chairman.

Annual traditions ( continued from page 4) The American Angus Auxiliary hosted their Annual Breakfast Nov. 4 at the Sheraton in Overland Park, just prior to the day’s National Angus Convention events. Nearly 275 people en-joyed the meal, which featured the CAB® brand, followed by entertainment by cowboy poet Ron Wilson. Kansas was in the spotlight during the event, as the Auxiliary paid tribute to Lynne Hinrichsen, retiring presi-dent, and her home state. Each attendee received a beautiful Angus bracelet. In addi-tion, 2015 Miss American Angus Madison Butler addressed the crowd on her year of service to the Angus breed. The Angus Gift Barn is also a popular fundraiser for the Auxil-iary each year, and National Angus Conven-tion participants enjoy shopping their newest items for sale. Angus clothing, jewelry, house-hold items, framed prints and much more were available for purchase in Overland Park. “If you’re looking for gift ideas throughout the year, we’d encourage you to visit the Angus Gift Barn online at angusgiftbarn.com, and you can also submit your membership online,” Rogen says. “All proceeds go toward supporting our breed’s next generation through scholarships and awards.” Learn more about the American Angus Auxiliary online at www.angusauxiliary.com.

It has been a true honor to serve as the 2015 Miss Kansas Angus. When I was first selected, I didn’t know all the experiences this year would hold in store for me. I quickly realized it was more than I had ever imagined. This has been a year that I will truly never forget. Traveling hundreds of miles to various places around our state and to Junior Na-tionals in Tulsa, Oklahoma, made for many memorable moments with family and friends. Meeting new people that I have become good friends with is also a highlight from my year and something I will treasure for years to come. I am sure our paths will cross again while attending shows, sales, or other events. As I finish up my junior year of high school and think about my senior year, I sometimes wonder what the future holds in store for me. While I have lots of decisions to make, one thing I know for sure is that I look forward to continuing my involvement in our association. The quote I started out with is something I took to heart when I started this year. I knew that this was my one and only year to serve the Angus breed as Miss Kansas Angus. I took every chance that I was able to this year and now I can look back saying I had so much fun. I would like to thank the Kansas Angus Association, Kansas Junior Angus Association, Kansas Angus Auxiliary, and the families and farms that have donated to the Miss Kansas Angus program. It would not be possible without you all. I would also like to thank my parents and brother for taking me to shows and sales. I couldn’t have gone to most of the things I went to without you guys! I cannot thank everyone enough for this opportunity to serve the An-gus breed. I wish you the best for 2016! Thank you again for an amazing year! Your 2015 Miss Kansas Angus, Morgan Woodbury
