Push for frack free KapitiDAVIDHAXTON
Kapiti Coast District Councilshould become the firstcouncil in the country tobecome frack free, Jean Kahuibelieves.
Ms Kahui, who addressed acouncil meeting on Thursday, said council backed a numberof green issues so going frackfree would ‘‘confirm thecommunity was connectedand concerned for theenvironment’’.
Fracking is a form ofextraction which involvespumping millions of litres ofpressurised, chemicallytreated water deepunderground to widen areasfor oil and gas to escape.
She said the practice washappening nearby.
‘‘The closest one I know ofis this side of Hawera and it’s
only metres from thecoastline.
‘‘From Kapiti to Hawera isabout 158km by road.
‘‘That’s not very far fromus and our freshwateraquifers that we are verydependent on.
‘‘This dangerous activity isbeing carried out without anyconsideration or regulationregarding contents of thewaste.
‘‘To date it is largely anunregulated business.
‘‘There is no knowledge ofhow our water aquifers arebeing affected or are likely tobe affected as the deep wellinjection under pressurecontinues.
‘‘Millions of litres of freshwater is being used andcontaminated beyond repair.’’
She said fracking wastewas also being spread inland
in the Taranaki region as wellas some waterways.
Land in Taranaki forspreading oil, gas andfracking waste was runninglow so the industry was‘‘looking at further land in theneighbourhood tocontaminate’’.
Fracking wells were beingdrilled in Dannevirke, withthe waste being trucked toTaranaki, she said, whileconsents to drill frackingwells in Ashhurst were in theprocess of being granted.
Ms Kahui said one of themost important resourcesKapiti had was clean water.
‘‘The bulk of ourcommunity is now reliant, forsome time to come, on thewater stored and collectedfrom the aquifers beneathKapiti.
‘‘That water must be
protected and cared for at allcosts.
‘‘The health of ourcommunity depends on it andthe health of all futuregenerations.
‘‘What is absolutely clear, without a doubt, is frackingactivities contaminatefreshwater aquifers.’’
Going frack free was a‘‘very worthwhile action to forthis council to consider’’.
‘‘That would give Kapiti areally big green light.
‘‘Kapiti frack free is a verygreen, very forward thinkingand very positive stand for ourcommunity to take.’’
Council was seeking areport on fracking ‘‘just so wemight understand howfracking might affect all thethings we’re doing withwater’’, Kapiti Mayor RossChurch said.

Before the tournament, he represented Wellington atPahiatua, winning his two singles matches 7 and 6 and 2 and 1.Also successful at the tournament were the Paraparaumu Beach School boys team of Jack Campbell, Bert Tomlinson, Flynn Lynch andTaine Hata, who had the lowest score for a boys team. Mapping lines irk residentsDAVIDHAXTON
The new council has been givenseveral reasons why so manypeople are annoyed with thecoastal hazard mapping lines.
Council has put the 50-yearand 100-year shorelineprediction lines on the LIMreports of 1800 properties.
The mapping lines werecourtesy of Coastal Systemsdirector Roger Shand, who wascommissioned by council toconduct a coastal hazardsinvestigation.
Jeff Ashby, a geologist, fromParaparaumu Beach, gave apresentation to council on
Thursday, similar to apresentation he gave to theprevious council.
He said all available dataindicated an average localaccretion rate of about 0.56m ayear.
‘‘The sea level is rising andstill we’re accreting here.
‘‘Scientifically, it’s veryconsistent.
‘‘If you applied this in 50years, the coastline would goout 28m, and in 100 years itwould go out 56m.
‘‘And the Shand reportchoose to ignore this data.
‘‘This is the premise that irks
me — that this data wasignored.’’
Mr Ashby said the methodShand used for formulate themapping lines ‘‘wasn’treferenced in any globalpublication anywhere’’.
‘‘It has come about from asmall group of so-called coastalexperts in New Zealand thathave formulated this equationout of a conference in theUniversity of Queensland aboutfive or six years ago.’’
Nobody had seen Shand’soriginal data, Mr Ashby said.
He was also concerned theShand report had never been
peer reviewed.‘‘The reality is the present
coastline builds out.‘‘There are so many factors
involved that to stand back andthen put a line on a map and say,‘I reckon in 50 years we’re goingto be here and in a 100 yearsthere’, without any degree ofprobability is bizarre.’’
Mr Ashby said historicallythere was a lot of evidence ofaccretion, especially north ofthe Kena Kena bulge, includingthe Hydrabad shipwreck [1878]in Horowhenua which was nowcovered in sand.
He also questioned why the
mapping lines had to go on LIMreports so fast.
‘‘A letter arrived to say thishad gone on my LIM report.
‘‘I thought surely there was aperiod of consultation in there.
‘‘I don’t know why it wasdeemed to be necessary to put iton the LIMs so quickly.
‘‘The thing about coastalerosion is you have time onyour side.’’
Regarding south of the KenaKena bulge, Mr Ashby felt therewas still a degree of accretion.‘‘The area has been affected bylack of sediment supply but thatcould have been man induced.’’

Carrier happy with Kapiti servicesDAVIDHAXTON
Air New Zealand is very happywith its air services in and out ofKapiti, regional affairs managerIan Collier says.
Mr Collier was the keynotespeaker at an Electra businessbreakfast at the Kapiti SportsTurf on Wednesday.
He said there was still a lot ofwork to do to increase patronagethough as the majority of seatson every flight needed to befilled.
‘‘At the moment there’s still alot of growth we need to get outof here and Auckland.
‘‘We’re okay but it’s still notwhere it needs to be — that’s notsomething you should beconcerned about but you should
be aware of.‘‘With Christchurch, we’re
satisfied we’ve got it across theline to a level where we aregoing to get that growth, andwe’re confident we will get theuptake we need.
‘‘Christchurch have beenfantastic on marketing theKapiti Coast initiative.
‘‘From a marketingperspective they’re getting rightin behind it.
‘‘We also have to accept thatit takes time too.
‘‘We’re very happy withwhere we are at with Kapiti.’’
Mr Collier said the growth inKapiti was ‘‘fantastic to see’’.
‘‘The progress that has beenmade here is staggering.
‘‘It’s the dream coming true
— it is becoming a reality.’’He had worked with some
fantastic Kapiti people.‘‘And we could not have
asked for a better council towork with in this region, and Isay that absolutely honestly andopenly.
‘‘It has been a fantasticjourney for us to date.’’
He also heaped praise on SirNoel Robinson, who has beeninstrumental in getting KapitiCoast Airport revamped.
‘‘Not only is he incrediblyintelligent and smart — he’s alsoa bloody good bloke.
‘‘In terms of the relationshipwe have with the airport, wecould not ask for a betterrelationship.’’
He encouraged the various
community stakeholders to bealigned in their vision withidentifying the core communityprojects and events and eachpledging their support.
‘‘It is plainly obvious to usthat where the airport, council, regional tourism organisations, economic development agenciesand chambers of commercework closely together, positiveprogress is always made — andthat does not exclude us, it’s aninclusive group.
‘‘Kapiti plays a vital role inour growth plans.
‘‘It’s absolutely vital that theKapiti district embraces theseservices.’’
Mr Collier was confident AirNew Zealand had the bestregional network in the world.
‘‘We have great coverage asall towns with a population ofmore that 20,000 people, apartfrom urban areas located within100km of a large city, are servedby Air New Zealand.
‘‘In comparison, only half ofregional centres in the likes ofAustralia, Canada and Swedenhave scheduled air services.
‘‘Comparing airfares, NewZealand boasts the cheapestregional airfares with Australiaranking the second mostaffordable although their faresare 29 per cent higher.
‘‘This year we will havearound half a million regionalairfares, excluding the maincentres, for less than $100 to helpstimulate tourism in theregions.’’

Reviewer replaced after single dayA person hired by council toindependently review theProposed District Plan is beingreplaced after only one day ofbackground reading.
And council is seeking anindependent legal expert tosupplement whoever the newindependent planning expert is.
Council chief executive PatDougherty has decided to replaceplanning expert Leigh Autonafter an independence review.
Mr Auton chairs the RecoverySolutions Board which is anAuckland-based mental healthprovider.
Stephen McArthur, council’srecently appointed strategy andpartnerships group manager, is
also a trustee and deputychairman of the board.
This association was declaredas part of the selection processfor Mr Auton but Mr Doughertysays he did not consider itmaterial at that time.
‘‘It was Leigh Auton’splanning expertise andindependence from the PDPdevelopment process that wereforemost in my mind.
‘‘However, in reviewing thisdecision as part of consideringthe legal expert appointment, Ihave decided, in the interests ofpublic confidence and legalsafety, to seek a replacementexpert planning reviewer.
‘‘I do this reluctantly because
of Leigh’s impeccable credentialsbut, if we are to truly buildbridges with the community tomove forward on the PDP, ourprocesses must not only beabsolutely transparent, but seento be administratively, ethicallyand legally robust.’’
Mr Auton had also beencontacted as a referee (at thecouncil’s request) by therecruitment company involvedin Mr McArthur’s appointmentto the group manager role atcouncil.
Mr Dougherty said, onreflection, this could beperceived as Mr Auton not being100 per cent independent, giventhat Mr McArthur has
management accountability forthe District Plan.
‘‘My decision in no wayquestions the skills, expertiseand integrity of either Mr Autonor Mr McArthur, as I hold both inhigh regard.
‘‘I simply need to ensure ourreview process is sound and thecouncil is able to make robustdecisions for all parties on theway forward for the PDP.’’
A replacement for Mr Autonas well as an independent legalexpert, will be appointed shortly, after discussions with CoastalRatepayers United andappropriate communityrepresentatives.
Council will be writing to
submitters once the experts areconfirmed.
Council commissioned thereview of the PDP after publicconcerns over aspects of the Planwere raised in formalsubmissions and during pre-hearing meetings withsubmitters. The reviewer’s briefwill be to determine whether thePDP should continue to beprogressed through the hearingsprocess, be significantly changedor be withdrawn in order toaddress submitter concerns.
Formal hearings due to startat the end of this year have beendelayed until the results of thereview are known early nextyear.

I want that one!So you’ve found the right propertyand you want to make it yours. That’s just fine, but it’s importantto understand that the vendor willoften require a touch more than yourenthusiasm and a written offer to putyour name above the door – it’s calleda deposit.
In most real-estate transactions thereis often an expectation of demonstrativegoodwill, usually to the tune of 5-10%of the value of the sale and this depositis usually expected to become payableimmediately upon the sale becoming“UNCONDITIONAL”. This is also themoment that, to their horror, some firsttime home buyers realise they may havea cash flow problem!
What this means is that you will needclarity from your bank or financialadvisor with regard to the availabilityof cash to pay the deposit when youneed it, so it makessense to checkwith your financialadviser well beforehandand work ahead toensure that if you“want that one” youcan actually have it.

Councillors loosen straight jacketCongratulations to Cr JackieElliot for pushing councillors toregularly have time to discussmatters among themselveswithout the constant presence ofstaff.
It has loosened thepsychological straight jacketthat constrained the previouscouncil. This is a significant andpositive change in politicalculture. Also last week, we hadveteran political observer, Bettyvan Gaalen, appeal to council toinitiate a referendum before anydecision is made on thecontroversial matter offluoridation.
The anti-fluoridecampaigners, however, prefer atribunal hearing public
submissions. Reasons — thescientific debate is too complexfor the average citizen; lessinformed citizens will depend onthe decades of entrenched andinter-generational ‘propaganda’about the effectiveness offluoridation; and, in the battlefor the minds of the citizens, theMinistry of Health and healthboards are better funded tooutgun them.
These may be valid reasonsbut the notion small groups ofdecision makers know better
what’s in the ‘real interest’ of thepublic can be a dangerous slopeto dictatorship. However, theangst over fluoridation may betaken off our hands with a casebefore the New Plymouth HighCourt on November 25.Christchurch-based New HealthNew Zealand had filed a caseagainst the South TaranakiDistrict Council for thefluoridation of the water suppliesof Waverley and Patea.
Their three-pronged claimfirstly states that under section11 of the New Zealand Bill ofRights Act 1990, everyone has theright to refuse to undergo anymedical treatment. Fluoridationis a medical treatment becauseit’s intended to treat and prevent
dental disease in a community.Fluoridation of water supplies, therefore, removes this right ofindividuals to refuse.
Secondly, in 1964, the PrivyCouncil ruled the addition offluoride did not change thepurity of the natural water. Thissection 240 of the MunicipalCorporations Act was replacedby an identical provision (s379)when the Local Government Act1974 was enacted. But thatsection 379 was repealed andnever replaced when the LGA2002 was enacted. They furtherclaim section 690 of the HealthAct provides that drinking waterstandards must not include anyrequirement for fluoride to beadded to drinking water. (This is
why you cannot forcefluoridation of Otaki’s andPaekakariki’s water supplies.)
Thirdly, they claim that ifthere were implied powers to addfluoride, councils will have toaccept that it limits the rightscontained in section 11 of the Billof Rights and have to justify whythe objective of dental health ismore important, and whetherthere were other ways to reachthis objective without limitingthe right in Section 11.
This is a serious legalchallenge. So serious, theAttorney General’s office hasbeen granted leave to intervenein the case to support thecouncil’s defence. The outcomehas national consequences.
Busy week as new team takes control
‘There were 16public speakers—that’s a lot. While Iwas very flexiblewith the three
minutes speakingtime rule, and willcontinue to be, Iurge people to tryto make their pointin threeminutes.’
Hello Kapiti,At the Local Body
Elections, fourcouncillors werevoted off and sixwere voted back tocouncil. That tells methat some significantchange was requested, butequally it says, by a vote of 6-4,that some stability wasrequired.
To reflect the change, the toppositions of mayor, deputymayor and head of the CBCcommittee, Gavin Welsh, arenew.
The stability is reflectedwith Councillors DianeAmmundsen and PennyGaylor. Both were voted
strongly back to council (CrAmmundsen for her ninth term— now there’s commitment) soI take from that, people werehappy with their performanceand requested a continuance.
Last Thursday was our firstreal working council meeting. There were 16 public speakers— that’s a lot. While I was veryflexible with the three minutesspeaking time rule, and willcontinue to be, I urge people to
try to make their point in threeminutes. The meetings are notthe time for long speeches, orfull blown presentations. Theyare an opportunity to bring anissue to the ear of yourcouncillors.
If the issue needs to gofurther, it will be pursued andformal meetings can bearranged. To be fair to all thosewho wish to raise an issue, weask that speakers try to stick tothe three minutes. Thanks.
It’s been a hugely busy week.Sunday began at 9.30am,sending off all the runners andwalkers on the beach for theYouthQuest fundraiser.
What a day, 350 plus peopledoing their bit to help. Thanks

Great job as local cop
FROMMY DIARY:OnMonday, I had Cabinet. The Houseis sitting this week.OnWednesday, I am speaking at afood safety conference in Dunedin andhosting a function for the RuralSupport Trusts in Parliament. On Thursday, I am in Rotorua for theNZ Society of Large Dams conference. On Friday, I am in the electoratebefore attending the CanterburyShow.
I’d like to welcome new Senior SergeantAnita Dixon to the Kapiti Police Station. Anitahas taken over from Senior Sergeant AlasdairMacmillan who gave nine years of service toour community.Alasdair has done a great job during his
time as our local cop.He understood that the Police needed to
work with the community and he alwaysmade himself accessible.Recent statistics for Kapiti show a 14 per
cent decrease in crime for 2012-13. Thefigures are a credit to Mac and his team.Earlier in the year, I visited the Levin
Police station with the Police Minister AnneTolley and we heard staffing numbers werethe highest levels they have been. This is having a positive impact on
policing there with reported crime inHorowhenua for 2012-13 down 6.2 per cent. The local figures help make up national
figures which show a 17.4 per cent decreasein reported crime over the past three years, and 7.4 per cent in the year to June.Nationally, we’ve also seen a large drop in
youth crime, which is down 10 per cent overtwo years. This has exceeded theGovernment’s target of 5 per cent by 2017,which means we have had to raise this targetto 25 per cent. The trends can be put down to more
frontline policing in our communities and amuch greater focus on crime prevention. There has been 600 extra police on the
beat in our communities and the introductionof Neighbourhood Policing Teams, which are
proving successful in Levin.New technology, such as smartphones
and tablets, are available for most policeofficers. This technology has freed up morethan half a million additional frontline Policehours, or the equivalent of about 345 extraPolice across New Zealand. The Government is committed to ensuring
that more police are spending more time outof the station and on the beat. This will help ensure the crime statistics
continue their downward trend.
Plan flaws willbe remediedDAVIDHAXTON
Council shouldn’t abandon theProposed District Plan,Coastlands chief executiveRichard Mansell says.
Some sections of thecommunity want the plandumped and have cited variousflaws with it.
But Mr Mansell, whoaddressed a council meeting onThursday, said while therewere some issues with the plan, the process had to follow aprescribed path.
He said Coastlands hadparticipated a lot in the planand had given a 44 pagesubmission on various aspectsand as well as reviewed andcommented on at least 15 othersubmissions.
‘‘This has been a lengthy andtime consuming process and Iestimate our cost to date wouldbe well in excess of $30,000.
‘‘And we are just onesubmitter — there are probablyhundreds of others that havemade some kind of investmentinto this process.
‘‘I also imagine council costsfor this are very high.’’
He said the pre hearingmeetings and likely appealswould provide the ‘‘opportunityto amend or change the plan andfind the anomalies that willalways creep into a lengthydocument’’.
Coastlands was committed toparticipating in the process andhe imagined its costs wouldexceed $100,000.
‘‘In summary, Coastlandsbelieves the Proposed DistrictPlan has flaws but the flaws willbe identified and remedied inthe current process.
‘‘And this process issomething that legally has to begone through.
‘‘Coastlands believes toabandon the current ProposedDistrict Plan will be wasteful ofboth ratepayer money and ourown and other submitters.’’
He said not everyone wouldwin with the plan but there wasa process and a cost involved.
‘‘And at the moment the costsare mounting up.’’

Amalgamationneeds thoughtOne of the hottest issuesfacing all councils in ourregion is amalgamationand the ‘‘should we orshouldn’t we’’ options.Kapiti is in a poorfinancial position andwould likely benefitgreatly from amalgamation.
At a minimum, Kapiti needs toensure it benefits from a genuineshared services programme.
Personally I’m not at allconvinced that in this situation abigger regional political entity isa bad thing and I don’t buy the‘‘loss of identity’’ argument at all.
Right across the regionCouncils are struggling with debtand much of it is due to the cost ofrunning the councils themselvesas well as the need to build newinfrastructure or replace oldinfrastructure. Many of thesecosts in the past were met bycentral government but theburden is now firmly with theratepayer.
In any event, the public needto have their say and makeinformed choices. The LocalGovernment Commissioners arecurrently touring the regionspeaking with and listening tovarious stakeholder groups. Theyare also holding public meetings.
The Local GovernmentCommission has received anumber of applications to changethe structure of local authoritiesin the Wellington region. I wasinvolved in the application fromGreater Wellington RegionalCouncil that would see a two-tiersystem made up of a centralcouncil and local boards. Otherproposals are also in the mix.
The proposals all advocate someform of change and affect thenumber of councils as well astheir responsibilities andpowers. There are ongoingdiscussions between the LocalGovernment Commission andsector groups throughout theregion.
We have two meetings run bythe Local GovernmentCommission in Kapiti onMonday of next week and Iencourage people to go along andhave your say, for or against orundecided.
Otaki Rotary Lounge, AotakiSt noon to 1.30pm.
Paraparaumu CoastCommunity Church, Hinemoa St7pm to 8.30pm.
Meanwhile, the GreaterWellington Regional Council hasundergone some changes to ourcommittee structures and a moveto portfolio leaders. I am verypleased to be heading theportfolio for Parks andRecreation which will allow for acontinuation of the work fromthe last triennium. I am also onthe Policy and StrategyCommittee and the WhitireiaPark Board, as well as the GWrep on the River Groups forOtaki and Waikanae. I will alsoserve on the Stadium Trust so itpromises to be another busythree years.

A school fair was the creativeturning point for one of this year’sKapiti Food Fair vendors SusanGraafland who, in a ‘‘moment ofmadness’’, decided she couldcreate her own business.
Making her first batch ofproduct in 2005 from the kitchen ofher Wellington home, theinnovative mum developed arange of natural fresh fruit syrupsfree of artificial colours, flavoursand preservatives.
‘‘At the fair I had made somelemonade and found it tasted somuch better than other offeringson the market and Kapiti Kitchensemerged,’’ she says.
‘‘Eight years on and we have aquality product that is value formoney and uses fresh seasonalingredients.
‘‘While this adds a huge amountof complexity, work and cost to ourproduct compared to buying inconcentrate fruit juice andprocessed ingredients, it’s allworth it.’’
At the time of the business’opening, Sue and her family wereplanning to move to Kapiti, whichis how the company’s distinctcoastal name came to be.
‘‘The right property didn’t comeup in time and we were bursting atthe seams so ended up finding aspace to grow into in GrenadaNorth next to the fruit markets, she says.
‘‘I have ladies that do all themixing and bottling from Otaki, who travel every day and arefabulous.’’
Excited to get the product rangeout to the Kapiti public, it is KapitiKitchen’s first year at the food fair, which one of Sue’s currentemployers suggested they attend.
As well as founding thebusiness around the distributionof a non-processed product, Suesays Kapiti Kitchen is dedicated torecycling and re-using.
‘‘At the moment I’m trying tothink of a creative way to re-use
the packing boards.‘‘I’ve made blackboards for
gifts, but I’d love to think ofsomething we can do on anongoing basis, so if anyone had anidea I’d love to hear from them!’’
Sue’s dream for Kapiti Kitchenis to build up the business to apoint where it can be utilised forhelping troubled youth.
‘‘We want to do what we can tosupport the local community.’’

You can’t accuse Donna Tartt of being a writingmachine, churning out her novels in a productionline fashion. The Goldfinch is just her third novelin 21 years but Tartt fans have been devotedsince she exploded onto the literary scene withher debut novel, The Secret History, and theycertainly won’t be disappointed with her latestoffering. It’s another blockbuster - 771 pageslong - but not one word is wasted. Tartt createsmemorable characters and charts a complicated
plot and that takes time. The story centres rounda young man called Theo Decker who survivesa terrorist attack that kills his mother and leaveshim the custodian of a priceless painting. Theois a marvellous character but so too is Boris, hisanarchic, amoral friend and kind, gentle Hobiewho’s a better father to Theo than his ownalcoholic dad ever was. It’s a vast, beautiful, richand textured novel and I love it as much as Iloved The Secret History.
By now, you’ll know that Mark Darcy hasbeen killed off by Fielding leaving BridgetJones a singleton again. But this time, finding love is going to be a whole lotharder than it was when Bridget was inher thirties. For a start, the man must liveup to the ideal of her dead husband. Foranother, Bridget has two young childrenand then there’s the horrors of a middle
aged body. Still, spurred on by friends,Bridget plunges back into the datingpool and falls madly in love with a boymore than twenty years her junior - whoimplausibly loves her back. Cue muchangsting and agonising before Bridgetfinds true love again. A light read andoften a laugh out loud one, this will be agreat book for a weekend.
It’s not often you get two brilliant books ina year far less a month but with Donna Tarttand Wally Lamb both releasing novels at thesame time, it was a wonderful treat for a bookreviewer. Wally Lamb is one of my favouriteauthors and this study of a family is absolutelybrilliant. Annie Oh, conceptual artist, wife ofOrion Oh and mother to their three children, has left her marriage after 27 years to marry herlover and the woman who propelled her to art
world stardom. She is having jitters before herwedding and looks back at her life and wonderswhether the demons she has kept locked awayneed to be dealt with before she can be trulyhappy. Meanwhile, her family wonders whetherthey ever really knew her. It’s a magnificentread and Lamb, as always, is able to bringhis characters to life, whether they are lesbianartists or Italian/Chinese American professors. One of my favourite reads of the year.

COSTLY: Council estimates the cost of clearing away debris from a slip in WaterfallRd, Raumati South, could be up to $200,000. PHOTO: KAP011113SPLSLIP
Raumati South sliprepairs prove costlyA slip in Waterfall Rd, Raumati Southoccurred on Wednesday October 30 atabout 10.30pm.
Council infrastructure group managerSean Mallon said it was caused by acombination of wet weather and the factthat the embankment involved is coveredwith a lot of highly fractured, silt stonerock.
‘‘This results in an unstable bank.’’Once council was made aware of the
slip, the area was immediately sealed off tothe public.
‘‘It is estimated there is about 1000 cubic
metres of debris lying on the road below theembankment and about 5000 cubic metresof debris on the bank itself which still posesa danger.
‘‘People should stay well clear of thearea, as the significant amount of debris onthe embankment could still come down.’’
Tonkin and Taylor carried out anassessment of the slip, which includedsafety and environmental risks, onTuesday last week.
Downers started the clear up onMonday.
The cost could be up to $200,000.
Don’t wait to get lucky, make life changes nowIn 2007/8 I used to train Dennis. He was 50years old and lived in Wellington with hiswife and eight-year-old son. Dennis had astressful job where he had to look after anumber of staff and build relationships(socialise) with current and potentialclients on a regular basis. Meetings over acoffee and piece of cake became the norm, and an after work beer turned into abottle of wine and a meal at a restaurant.Looking from the outside it seemedDennis had a great life that he reallyenjoyed. He had a wonderful wife and abeautiful son, money was never a stressand he had a nice house overlookingWellington harbour.
He came to see me in early 2007wanting to lose his pot belly and gethimself healthier. I used to turn up atDennis’s house with my Swiss ball anddumbbells and put him through aworkout twice a week. His fitness andstrength levels were very low but over aperiod of a few months he built up somegood strength and was recovering somuch faster (this is a great sign ofimprovement). We started doing somerunning and walking on Oriental Paradeat lunchtimes and Dennis had even done acouple of 5 and 10k walking events.
On this one particular Tuesday we setoff from Freyberg Pool running/walkinground the bay when Dennis wasexhausted after a matter of minutes. He
staggered to sit on a bench and I grabbedDennis’s car keys and ran to his car. Ipicked Dennis up and almost instantly werealised this was serious, so I passedthrough every red light on my way toWellington Hospital. Within about fiveminutes of walking in the hospital doorDennis’s heart stopped beating for thefirst time and the doctors placed the padson his chest to bring him back to life. They had to do that once more while hewas in theatre. Dennis was lucky . . . andsurvived.
Only two days before Dennis hadcompleted a 10k event in the hills of HuttValley, if he’d had the heart attack thenhe wouldn’t have been here today.
A life re-check from Dennis has seenhim move to the sunny Hawke’s Bay,working part-time in his own business, enjoying more family time, eating healthyfood, drinking less, incorporatingexercise almost daily and stressing a hellof a lot less.
My advice — don’t wait to get lucky?Make some changes!

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Negative diatribeOnce again we read the negativeanti-expressway diatribe fromNigel Wilson (Kapiti News Nov 6)and wonder when he will finallycome to realise the expressway is adone deal despite the actions of thelast of the few dissidents who can’tseem to accept that buying proper-ties adjacent to land designated fora motorway was not a wise decisionand are completely negative toprogress for future generations.
New Zealand roading in generalis almost third world standard andat long last for the benefit of all NewZealand motorists we have a Gov-ernment who has finally recognisedthat and is now doing somethingabout it in the form of Trans-mission Gully and the KapitiExpressway.
Full marks to the National Gov-ernment and bad marks to ourregional councillor who is notsupporting the wishes of the overallmajority of citizens in Kapiti whowant this motorway tomorrow.
As he no longer represents andis out of tune with what most Kapitipeople want, he should resign now.
ROD CAVAYEPARAPARAUMU
Logical solutionA letter questions the former
mayor’s integrity (Nov 6). Kapitivoters have made their decision sobest to move on, however the writermentions the vexed issue of watermeters. What the general publicprobably don’t know is that when a‘‘recharge’’ scheme and dam wereput forward as solutions, the formermayor knew that unless watermeters were introduced therecharge scheme would not pro-ceed. Water meters were integral tothe scheme gaining consent. Therecharge scheme is ‘‘bleeding edge’’meaning potentially more riskythan a dam, but cheaper. Watermeters push down usage and ariskier solution becomes a backupthat may be only occasionallyrequired.
A dam is the most logical solu-tion and if the newly elected councilvote not to introduce volumetriccharging, if you will pardon thepun, then the recharge scheme willbe dead in the water. There is also apositive financial spinoff. Thescheme’s consent is subject toextensive tests for one year. Largesums of money getting it set up willnot need to be spent nor will payingconsultancy fees.

Singled outI have read with deepest concern
your article on home brothels. Thisarticle is a direct personal attack oncouncillor Gurunathan. This per-sonal attack, according to yourarticle, is made by Mr Ebenhoh. Itstates that Cr Gurunathan attended
the workshops where prostitutionas a home occupation was dis-cussed. Why does Mr Ebenhoh notidentify other councillors thatattended that same workshop? Whysingle out one councillor? Did MrEbenhoh receive directions to makethis personal attack or was it off hisown bat? If he was given directions, who gave them, the new mayor orthe new council? If they did not,why should a council staff membermake a public attack on the integ-rity of an elected councillor?
Mr Ebenhoh says that — underthe PDP there would be limits on . . .vehicle activity. How are they goingto do this? And on what evidencedoes council believe that this type ofhome occupation activity isunlikely? Have council com-missioned a report? Have councilbeen consulting with the commun-ity on this issue? Please MrEbenhoh, don’t leave us hanging, tell us more!

Rubbish on shoreI am disabled and still like to
walk on the beach as I find the sanddoesn’t jar my joints and cause thepain pounding the footpaths does.
For the last month (and I knowits out of everyone’s hands) theamount of rubbish that has beenwashed up on our beach from theboating club down to theWharemaku outlet has been thepits. I have reported to both thecouncil and DOC about a washed uppig (the most putrid of smellsimaginable) and just last weekend aseal. Both were removed.
But there are so many trees, branches, twigs, roots of plantsremaining that don’t seem to bebeing washed back out. Could thecouncil perhaps rake it all up andhave a bonfire to get rid of it?
JANICE MAGEEPARAPARAUMU
■ Council stormwater and coastalassets manager Matt Aitchisonresponds: The effects of tidal flowsand bad weather, causing debris tobe deposited on the beach, is anongoing issue for coastal com-munities. Council doesn’t usuallyinterfere with these natural pro-cesses as tides clear away thedebris in time. One day a beachcan be littered with branches, twigs, leaves and tree roots but thenext day, be clean. Janice iscorrect, we have had a pretty badrun of spring storms but hopefullybetter weather is on the way andshe can enjoy the beach withouthazard. She is correct to ringcouncil where anything offensive, such as animal carcasses, arewashed up.

take of leaving them in a parked car— even for ‘‘just a minute’’ — whilethey do the shopping, go the libraryetc. If you’re going out in the car, think very carefully about what youare going to do with your dog. It canget unbearably hot in a car on asunny day, even when it’s not thatwarm. In fact, when it’s 22C outside, the temperature inside a car cansoar to 47C within 50 minutes.Unlike humans, dogs pant to helpkeep themselves cool. In a hot stuffycar dogs can’t cool down — leavinga window open or a sunshield onyour windscreen won’t keep yourcar cool enough. Don’t leave yourdog in a car. Dogs die in hot cars.

Beach erosionYour correspondent M R
Menzies, of Oct 30, asks if CRU hasgone silent ‘‘. . . because they haveseen huge lumps of sand dunesfalling into the sea . . .’’ I suggest thesilence has more to do with atemporary lull in the PDP processand CRU members rejoicing the un-ceremonial end to what manymight consider a disgraceful may-oralty.
What should also be realised isthe normality for most beaches toexperience episodic erosion andaccretion and that snap-shot eventsare built into the all-important longterm trends.
Even a temporary shift of aver-age wind direction will causeerosion for some and accretion forothers — as wave intensity in thelea of Kapiti correspondingly shifts.
Unfortunately the draconianPDP restrictions corresponding to‘‘hazard lines’’ may also have effectin the event of a one-off storm ortsunami. Restrictions on defendingand recovering and associated lossof property and re-build rightscould equally apply to those furtherinland and unbelievably, perman-ently even though a beach maylater recover.
I believe our deposed MayorRowan headed an extreme-greenagenda. She seemed quite happy topush a PDP that overlooked thehuman cost of the severe PDPrestrictions. It seems the law wassimply a process allowing her toram through such agenda — allbehind the skirt of RMA section 85where the ‘‘inconvenience’’ of com-pensation is not a factor.
This allows those of a unilateralbent to forgo proper consultationand so lose the plot as was wit-nessed (just because they can).
It also seems there has been awilful or gullible reliance upon alimited version of science that failsto take proper account of accretion.Whether the accretion is variablyexisting or forecast throughincreased sediment supplies fromrivers (a beach-positive element ofclimate change corresponding tothe predicted increase in rainfall)the lines appear unscientific.
Likewise ignored was theerosion effect of KCDC’s own sandexcavations. Man-made erosionneeds to be credited back beforelong term trends are reliableenough to determine hazard lines.
Thus, in this enjoyable interludeof relative silence and celebration ofdemocracy, council might remem-ber that leadership is a double-sidedcoin — to be tossed with com-passion, understanding and con-sultation and lest it be forgotten, free of pre-determined bias.

Strangers kindI would like to say a huge thank
you to many people of Waikanae, whom I had never met before, fortheir help and kindness shown tome on Saturday, August 24. On thatfateful day I incurred quite seriousfractures and dislocation of myankle while watching our twoGerman shepherd dogs play. Soengrossed in their antics I hadn’trealised that while standing on wetsand with training shoes on that Ihad sunk a little into the sand, sowhen trying to body swerve awayfrom the fast approaching dogs myshoe and ankle stayed put, thus thetwist and glancing blow of one ofthe dogs caused me to fall andinjure myself. Only seconds afterthis happening a family appearedand immediately offered their help, phoning 111 etc. This family I nowknow as Susan and Rick Ansell. There were many others whohelped with blankets, cushions etc, quickly retrieved from homes/baches near by. When we all real-ised that an ambulance was notimminent and dusk was approach-ing, how to move me was a problem,if to move at all.
Just when I was beginning todespair at not seeing an ambulancea beautiful apparition of the volun-tary fire crew appeared and thingsbegan to happen. One firemanapplied a rustic splint to my injuredlimb using a piece of driftwood, atowel and rope. After this wasapplied I was moved on to a backboard to be carried over the sanddunes to the main road by the firecrew then taken into the FourSquare stock room to be out of theelements as I was very wet and cold.
Immediately the owners, QuocTran and Thuy Vu, of the shop wereon hand with hot water to enableme to be washed and offering theirservices in any way. Again anotherlady who I only know as Kate, apparently a nurse, appeared andchecked me out also supplying dryclothes for me to wear. Thank youKate for your kindness.
Eventually an ambulancearrived, the medic was marvellous, not only because he had pain reliefdrugs! After checking me over hedecided a helicopter needed to besummoned as I required a quickjourney to Wellington hospital formy ankle to be repositioned and
surgery to take place. This allhappened thanks to Life Flight, whoagain were marvellous.
From the accident taking placeat about 5.30pm and my arrival atWellington Hospital at 8.30pm I metsome very kind, considerate andhelpful strangers. Thank you all sovery much for all you did that night— I would love to meet you allagain.

Fireworks thanksOn behalf of Waitohu Home and
School Association, I would like tothank all the wonderful businessesand individuals who support andsponsor the school to put on ourannual Fireworks Extravaganza. The Waitohu School Fireworksshow has been going on for over 20years, and costs the school $10,000plus other expenses. This event isthe biggest in Otaki, and givesfamilies from Levin to Parapara-umu the opportunity to go to anaffordable fireworks display with-out having to travel too far. Withoutsupport from our wonderful com-munity it would not be possible forour community to have this ‘‘intheir backyard’’ as it is such anexpensive event to run. Thanksfrom our school and community. Please support our local businessesas they support our community.

Worth it?I was pleased to read Nigel
Wilson’s article in the Kapiti NewsNov 6 and I agree that theexpressway people are ridingroughshod over us.
I drove down Te Moana Rd a fewdays ago and was horrified at thedestruction at the western end ofwhat is surely one of Waikanae’sprettiest streets.
In my own part of Paraparaumu, more land is being taken, familiesare losing their homes, maturetrees will be ripped out and manymore houses exposed to the noiseand pollution of the newexpressway. None of this additionalland is needed for the expresswayitself. It is being acquired purely for‘‘aesthetic’’ purposes. A belated let-ter and pictures I have received, affirm this.
It seems that the real reason forall this upset and destruction is sothat drivers along Mazengarb Rdwill gasp with wonder and say tothemselves (or their passengers),‘‘Look! No houses, no big trees, noconcrete wall along the underpass!Only slopes covered in scrub!Wow!!’’
Is it really worth it? I think thatfamilies should be able to keep theirhomes, and drivers should beencouraged to keep their eyes onthe road.

LONG-TERM: Trevor Gollins has lived with type two diabetes for a long time.PHOTO: KAP061113SPLDIABETES
Trevor Gollins, 92, has been livingand managing his type two diabetesfor more than 45 years.
Mr Gollins’, of ParaparaumuBeach, daily routines just to keephealthy involve monitoring hisblood sugar levels and injectinginsulin four times daily.
‘‘Prior to my diagnosis in 1966, Iwas excessively thirsty and almostwent into a diabetic coma.
‘‘I was in hospital for a weekbeing stabilised, and right from theword go, have been on insulin.’’
He has witnessed many changesin the management of diabetes overthe years.
‘‘Initally my blood sugar levelswere checked once every threemonths by the doctor, now I do itmyself several times a day.’’
His mother also had type twodiabetes.
‘‘Thankfully my son and threegrandsons have been able to dodgeit.’’
Living with the condition ledTrevor to join the WellingtonDiabetes Society, which he waspresident of for seven years, thenmoved to Rotorua and was presidentthere for five years in the 1980s.
When he and his family moved toParaparaumu he was the presidentof the Diabetes New Zealand KapitiBranch for 11 years.

There is now a place to restoutside Waikanae Health Centreand wait for taxis or lifts, thanksto the Waimea Women’s Instituteand Waikanae MenzShedmembers.
The idea of donating a benchto the Waikanae Health Centrewas suggested by WaimeaWomen’s Institute past presidentSharan Simpson, after a numberof the members remarked therewas nowhere for elderly orinfirm to sit down while waitingfor someone to pick them upfrom the drop-off point.
The idea was broached, andthe surgery staff were delighted, suggesting they had the idealspot to site it.
Waimea WI then held afundraising garden partyfunction in Dawn Christie’sgarden to to pay for it.
After consultation it wasdecided to have the seat at aheight suitable for elderlypatients who might havedifficulty rising from aconventional bench.
A member of MenzShedvisited the surgery to measurethe special chairs provided in thewaiting room and the bench wasconstructed by membersworking from Peter Blackler’sbasic sketch and briefspecifications.

Introducing VERGE into FROCK SHOP“I am always on the lookout for new orsuccessful designers to bring to the store,” saysThe Frock Shop owner Jude Riddell, from herRaumati Beach-based designer boutique store.
“I like to give our clients new choices and we’revery excited to have the successful NZ label Vergein store NOW, which we previously didn’t havedue to exclusivity of the label being in Tactix.”
With a teaser of Verge’s famous summerAcrobat pant in 7/8 and 3/4 in store, availablein both black and white, Jude says Kapitiwomen and beyond can be assured they willfind their summer pant at The Frock Shop thisupcoming season.
So far, Jude says she has worn her 3/4 whitepants with a variety of tops and dressesincluding the longish Company of StrangersTop, Deborah Sweeney striped dress andNomd printed top and jacket. Prefaced witha laugh, Jude says she ‘has fallen in love withher Acrobat pants.”
“They look is just fantastic and feel amazinglycomfortable. I like the narrow leg with a longishtop; it gives the illusion of being taller andslimmer!”
“Adding a pair of Kathryn Wilson heels orflats also complements the look,” says thededicated fashion professional.
“Our team member Michelle wears the black3/4 pants, with her blue flowered Frank andEileen blouse and variety of Loobies Story topswhich look stunning on her”.

Biggest Looser is One Week Awayfrom its Final Weigh-in!
Paraparaumu’s Fitclub is in the last stagesof its 6-week weight lose competition, whichhas seen 5 of the gym’s personal trainers takegroups through results-driven fitness and lifestyleregimes in a bid to find Kapiti’s Biggest Looser.
Trainers Kelly Chapman, Marcel Austmann, BarryHawkins and Isaac King have been workinghands on with teams of 4, while gym owners andphysiotherapists Hynson and Cat Poulter havebeen focused on larger groups of 9.
Trainer Mat Brown is set to judge the final weigh-in, which will determine who walks away with thegreatest weight loss results and winning prizepack.
Already proving to be a popular event atTongariro street’s Fitclub, the concept of Kapiti’s
Biggest Looser emerged after a fewof the instructors joked about seeingwho was the best of best.
“Brendon the gym’s manager said theonly way to decide fairly was to run acompetition,” Hynson explains.
“I thought he was joking, until the night came toconduct 60-second interviews and we were therefor a couple of hours.”
Hynson says Kapiti’s Biggest Looser competitionhas been an exciting process for the competitorsas well as the trainers, who enjoy watchingsomeone do a handstand for the first time intwenty years, or nail a complex Olympic weight-lifting movement.
“As a trainer we try and make every day seem
urgent and exciting by constantly refreshing theroutine or creating mini challenges,” he says.
“While people come to the gym for health, fitnessand performance reasons, overall health andwellbeing are number one.”

Oh to play againIn March this year I startedhelping someone who lovedgolf but was restricted dueto an old shoulder rotatorcuff injury then more recentlyshoulder bursitis. Most rotatorcuff injuries are tendonitis inthe four muscles that attachto the shoulder. Bursitis is aslightly different problem thatcan also be restrictive andpainful.
A bursa is a fluid filled sacthat allow for smooth jointfunction by reducing frictionbetween joint tissues. Aninflamed bursa will restrictmovement and can becomeswollen and red. Becausebursae are located adjacent totendons it is possible to haveboth tendonitis and bursitisand for an avid golfer that isno fun at all.
We started an anti-inflammatory programme thatwas initially very intensive. Our goal was to change thediet and introduce potent anti-inflammatory supplements tohelp reduce inflammation asrapidly as we could. He wasquickly able to reduce anti-inflammatory drugs and after
2 months rated progress as5/10.
I spoke to him in Octoberand he rated his progressat 9/10 and was now is backplaying golf. Additionally hefeels more energetic and justbetter in himself. There wasnothing that was particularlybrilliant in what we did. Wejust added nutrients that wereable to dial back the amountof joint tissue inflammationthus allowing the shoulderthe ability to heal. It saddensme that many people havethis potential to heal buthave accepted second best asnormal. My view is that younever know unless you try.If a joint injury is holding youback, give me a call to help youto once again enjoy the thingsyou love.

Street parade addedto annual carnivalA street parade will take placethrough Raumati Beach villagebefore a popular Christmascarnival.
The idea of the parade is toshowcase the local businessesand talents which make up theRaumati Beach community.
It’s the brainchild of RaumatiBeach School board of trusteesmember, Nichola Coe.
‘‘When I first got involvedwith helping plan this year’sChristmas Carnival, mythoughts immediately went tokicking it off with a streetparade,’’ she said.
‘‘I think everyone initiallythought I was mad but, as time’sgone on, there’s been a lot ofpositive feedback from thestudents, parents, village shopsand, of course, Raumati Beach
School that this would be a realshow stopper, and could becomea great, annual event.’’
The parade, on Saturday,November 30, will leave KapitiCollege at 9.30am, turning rightinto Margaret Rd, right intoRaumati Rd past Raumati BeachSchool, right into Hillcrest RdNorth and back into the college.
The parade will be theprecursor to Raumati BeachSchool’s Christmas Carnival, this year taking place on aSaturday, rather than the usualFriday twilight craft market ofChristmases past.
‘‘Many parents, especiallythose working in town, had saidit was difficult to lend a hand atthe Friday evening market asthey were still on the traincoming home while it was on.
‘‘We’ve moved it to a Saturdaythis year just to gauge if thisreally works for parents, staffand, most importantly, thecrafters, as the Christmas CraftMarket is a major drawcard ofthis annual fundraiser.’’
Niel Thomson, of SHARE NZ,is the carnival’s platinumsponsor.
‘‘This is shaping up to be awonderful event socongratulations to Nichola andthe team of helpers for making ithappen. Hopefully morebusinesses will want to getbehind this fantastic venture andmake it an annual must foreveryone in Kapiti.’’
Businesses and artists whowould like to be part of theparade should email Vicki Aylett([email protected]).

Paint trials tohelp everyoneNew Zealand Transport Agency(NZTA) is informing motoriststhat unusual highwayroadmarkings appearing in TeHoro and Upper Hutt are part of apaint trial to help identify thebest paints to use on roads.
‘‘How we mark our roads isincredibly important,’’ saysregional performance managerMark Owen.
‘‘Whether you’re driving avehicle, riding a bike or justwalking, road markings show usthe route ahead and let us knowwhere we should be on the road.‘‘And the materials we use tomark the road are just asimportant as the markingsthemselves.
‘‘They have to be brightenough to see in the daytime, reflect enough light at night to beeasily seen and stay visible inwet conditions (day or night)when we most need them.
‘‘On top of all that, they alsohave to be pretty tough.
‘‘With 1 to 10 million journeyson our major roads every year, roadmarkings take a realbeating.
‘‘So the only way that we canreally find out whether they areup to the job is to try them out ona real road.’’
That’s exactly what’s going onat State Highway 1 Te Horo, andFergusson Drive, Upper Hutt.
NZTA is testing a number ofdifferent kinds of paint to seewhich ones will provide the highlevels of performance, durabilityand visibility needed on statehighways over the coming years.
The markings will be paintedhorizontally across the road toensure they are not easilymistaken for normal roadmarkings.
‘‘This trial will help us decideexactly what specifications wewill need in the future,’’ MrOwen said.
The markings motorists willsee at Fergusson Drive and TeHoro are just the first step in thisproject.
Pre-marking lines were laidin March to prepare for the fulltrial which starts this week.NZTA will put down four lines ofeach of the test paints. Two willbe painted directly onto the roadand two will go on top of theexisting lines.
‘‘We’re doing this so that wecan see how well the paintperforms when we are re-marking over paint that has beenout in the elements for a fewmonths, as well as when it’s new.
‘‘By the end of 2015 we shouldknow which paint(s) will give usthe most cost-effective and saferoadmarkings for StateHighways all around NewZealand.’’
The transport agency wouldlike to assure the public usingthese roads that all the paintused in this trial is skid resistantand safe to drive on, and that thisproject will help to create safer, longer lasting roadmarkings inthe future.

Fundraising campaigna cool idea for schoolsTip Top ice cream on a hot Novemberlunchtime went down a treat atParaparaumu College.
The college participated in theinaugural Ronald McDonald HouseWellington’s Cream it for Kids campaign.
Tip Top donated the ice creams thatwere sold, with all profit going to RonaldMcDonald House.
Nine schools were involved in thefundraising event, all of which have hadsome relationship with Ronald McDonaldHouse in the past.
‘‘As a family charity, we felt it wasimportant to involve schools and theirstudents in our fundraising efforts — anduntil Cream it For Kids, we had no eventwhich solely focussed on schools,’’ RonaldMcDonald Wellington events and
assistant fundraiser Tori Holden said. The schools were all based within
Wellington, except for South MakirikiriSchool near Marton.
‘‘Next year we plan to extend the reachand spread out further in New Zealand, and continue to grow this as an annualevent.’’
Kimberly Kelly, who facilitated theevent at Paraparaumu College, saidstudents and staff were incrediblysupportive and her helpers found the icecreams very easy to sell.
‘‘Not many people turn down icecream, especially ice-cream in cute littlepots’’, she said.
All schools involved have said theywould like to be involved with Cream itfor Kids in 2014.
Pyjama Day fundraiser
VARIETY: You could be forgiven for thinking many of the Waikanae School children and several staffwere in a rush to get to school on the first day of the month, as many turned up in their pyjamas.Several could also be seen carrying teddies or other soft toys. However, all was not as it seemed, itwas all part of a Pyjama Day fundraiser for Ronald McDonald House. The pyjama party raised a total ofover $200.Children could donate a gold coin to come to school in their pyjamas.Pyjamas ranged from onesies, animal patterns and animal costumes to nighties and other moretraditional styles, along with a variety of dressing gowns. Bare feet, socks, Ugg boots and slippersmade up the rest of their outfits. Waikanae School regularly holds such events to support a variety ofcharities and to raise an awareness of the work such organisations carry out. The events alsoencourage children to gain a practical understanding of the work these organisations undertakesupporting families from our local community. PHOTO: KAP061113SPLJAMAS

Do You Need a Funeral Director?by Andrew Malcolm
Society has had special people assigned to assist
with Funeral rituals in varying ways since time
began. These days there seems so much more
that needs to be done and that is why Funeral
Homes have trained staff on hand to help.
“Even when most professional Funeral Directors
have had loss of a close family member or
relatives they generally choose to engage another
professional to help”
Legally anyone can act as a Funeral Director,
however there are strict laws in place to protect
public health and many ethical, emotional and
practical reasons why engaging a professional is
a good idea.
Even when most professional Funeral Directors
have had loss of a close family member or
relatives they generally choose to engage
another professional to help. This is because they
recognize the need to give themselves room to
grieve, taking their eye off all the practical issues
and focus on the emotional issues to assist with
healing.
There are so many things to deal with at this
time, but often families want to do some things
themselves to feel involved apart. Your funeral
director can help and direct you in these areas too.
For more information and help contact one of the
Funeral Homes listed.

Roadworksprogressingahead of timeThe New Zealand TransportAgency is advising motoriststhat traffic changes will behappening next week followingexcellent progress byconstruction crews on thesafety upgrade of the OtaihangaIntersection, just north ofParaparaumu on StateHighway 1.
Transport AgencyWellington highways managerRod James says traffic will beswitching onto a section of thenewly constructed roundabouton Monday November 18.
The Otaihanga IntersectionImprovements project willreplace the existingintersection with a two-laneroundabout and is part of asuite of safety improvementsalong this stretch of highway.
Mr James says the work isprogressing ahead of scheduleand has meant that traffic canbe moved onto the new a sectionof roundabout before theholiday period begins.
‘‘It’s been great to see theroundabout taking shape overthe past few months, and it’sdue to the hard work anddedication of the constructionteams, particularly throughsome recent bad weather, thatwe’re able to move traffic ontopart of the new roundabout wellahead of the Christmas break’’.
‘‘This is a significant steptowards improving the safety ofjourneys through thischallenging and busyintersection.’’
‘‘There may be some delaysas people get used to the newroad layout and we urge driversto take care in this area, withreduced speed limits still inplace until we open the fullroundabout early next year.’’
Temporary trafficmanagement will be in placeeach night between 8pm and5am from Sunday November 17to Thursday November 21 soleave some extra time for yourjourney.
Traffic will be switched ontothe new lanes by 5am MondayNovember 18 and the old routeclosed.
The Otaihanga Road/SH1intersection will have a newconfiguration, but willcontinue to operate as a Tintersection following thetraffic switch.
‘‘This new layout will be inplace until the full roundaboutis opened early next year,’’ MrJames said.
‘‘The Otaihanga roundaboutwill be similar to the existingroundabout on SH1 atPlimmerton, althoughOtaihanga will be slightlylarger at roughly 70m widewith a 48m wide centralisland.’’
As well as improving safety, the new Otaihanga roundaboutis expected to improve trafficflow, especially during peaktimes.
Construction started in July2013 and is expected to becompleted by April 2014.
Light up yourhome usingsolar powerIf you’re keen to power yourhome using free solar energy, come along to a talk atParaparaumu Library nextweek and find out how.
Micah Sherman will talkabout why solar photovoltaicpanels are the favoured energy-generation system forhouseholds next TuesdayNovember 19, 7.30pm to 9.30pmat the Paraparaumu Librarymeeting room (koha entry).
Micah is the photovoltaicmanager with Right House, acompany established byMeridian Energy to offer adviceon energy efficient home designand products.
He will discuss how solarphotovoltaic panels work, financial nitty-gritty, theprocess (i.e. dealing with linescompanies and retailers) andhow to decide if solar is theoption for you.
‘‘Generating your ownrenewable energy is no longerthe domain of isolated farmersand back-to-the-landers,’’ saysStacey Gasson, council’ssustainable communitiescoordinator.
‘‘Some people like the appealof knowing their appliances arebeing powered by a free, non-polluting and renewable naturalresource, for others it’s a chanceto escape rising electricityprices.’’
‘‘But as a grid-connected
urban household, it can be hardto work out which system is foryou and whether the upfrontcosts are worth it.
‘‘Solar hot water, photovoltaic panels and, to alesser extent, wind energy areall promoted as viable options.’’
Micah has 10 yearsexperience in low-energybuilding design, energyefficiency and renewableenergy.
He has worked in a diverserange of countries including theUS, Australia, New Zealand, theTorres Strait Islands, China andthe Solomon Islands.
This talk is being offered aspart of council’s ‘Getting On ToIt’ series.

Is your favourite clock in need of a revamp?Maybe you have found a beautiful antiquebargain requiring a little love to get it tickingagain? Whatever your clock fixing needs, experthorologist Trevor Dellow has the skills, dedicationand patience to restore your individual timepiece. With clock repair and maintenance experiencedating back to 1962, Trevor has extensiveknowledge about the ins and outs of all alarm, cuckoo, mantle, wall and grandfather clocks. Nomatter the age or condition of your clock – Trevorcan find the spare parts to bring your clockback to life. “Just like anything else mechanical, clocks also need servicing occasionally.”Trevor says the most common problem in clocksis the build up of dirt and dust, which long-term can result in your clock needing completerestoration. “I love that when I first go tosomeone’s house their clock doesn’t work. When
I go back, it does!” he says.It is Trevor’s reliable, fuss-free approach that hashim in demand up and down the Kapiti Coast.Trevor is situated in Levin and comes to theCoast on Fridays for drop offs and pick-ups. “Ivisit your home and take the insides out of yourclock and leave the case there. I fix the insides, then bring them back to your home and put themback in their case.”Trevor’s expertise rests on fixing and maintainingclocks as ancient as three hundred years old.“You can still find the right parts today to fixclocks that are two hundred to three hundredyears old,” he says. “The reason my focus is onservicing clocks and not watches is becausemodern day watches just aren’t as replaceableas old clocks, surprisingly. People tend to throwaway broken watches instead of fixing them.”“Most clocks were made to go forever,” he says.
“Simply call me on 06 368 6483 and let’s makea time to visit you and your clock. I’m happy togive you a quote and to answer anyclock-repair inquries.”

Heartfelt thanksto sports’ sponsorsRYANEDWARDS
Without sponsors, it could be argued thatthere would be no sport. At grass rootslevel, we’d still be able to pay our subs toplay the games we love, but there would beno sport for our gifted players to aim for.Because, without the money injected fromcorporate or indeed public funding, therewouldn’t be the academies, thetournaments and the championships forour players and teams to aspire to. But it’sone thing to look at the big name corporatesponsors who have entire divisionsdedicated to marketing and ‘‘brandrelationships’’ but it’s another thingaltogether when the sponsor is a localbusiness or society, someone who iswilling to help make something happen.
One of the things that makes me proudabout living in this neck of the woods isthe generosity of individuals — inside andoutside of of business. In a time whenmoney is not easy to come by for most, there are still people willing to dig intotheir pockets and come up with a littlesomething to contribute. We’re Kiwis, sowe don’t want a big song and dance madeof it, most of the time, we’re happy just toknow we have done our bit.
So, when we say thanks to theBoundary for helping make this KapitiSport page happen, we’re not just payingthem lip service. Quite simply, withoutthem, and indeed without the good peopleat Kapiti News, this article wouldn’thappen. Without the the support of JobCafe, McAra Air Conditioning and TheAchievement Room, you would not havegot to know Rose Biddiscombe, SeanRichardson, Kayla Walker, Jake Harris,Liam Perry may have to go without. AtKapiti Sport, we’re doing our bit to raisethe profiles of our young sporting talent,to work with The Hawk’s Sports Academyto help these up and coming stars realisetheir goals. All too often we as spectatorssee the sponsor’s name and forget theirimportance.
Does the fact that the Black Caps aresponsored by ANZ change my bankinghabits? Not at all, but I’m glad they’re intheir doing their bit. Does the success ofour national rugby team make me drinkmore Steinlager, sign up with AIG or deckmyself out in Adidas from head to toe? No,but again — I’m impressed that they’re allinvolved. There is a massive difference, however, when I see that a local business
has helped out a sport that my childrenare involved in, I make a conscious choiceto take my business there. And I’d inviteall Kapiti people to start thinking in thesame way.
The more we support the sponsors ofsport in this region, the more they will getout of their investment, and the more theywill want to spend in the future.Businesses are generally not out to make alot of money out of such sponsorshipdeals, they do it for profile and for Kapitiresidents to say ‘‘good on them for gettingin behind sport, I’m going to give them ago.’’
One of the Waikanae Surf Club’ssponsors is Pete Ludlam, owner ofPaveway. I was interested to knowwhether he considers it worthwhile.
‘‘Definitely. Just for having our nameon the surfboard at Waimea, I have hadbookings. But it’s also about feeling goodto be giving back.’’
There are some publications thatrefuse to print the names of sponsors, because apparently it cheapens theeditorial value. If this practice continues, sport could well be in trouble, becausewithout the necessary exposure, sponsorswill just begin to say ‘‘no.’’ Look, I know itcan get annoying when every singleelement of a radio show is sponsored, andyes, tournament presentations from avery nervous, very uncharismaticsponsor’s representative are hideous foreveryone involved, but if it’s done right, asI think it is here in Kapiti — everyonewins; there’s sport to play, sport to watch, and sport to talk about afterwards in thesponsoring pub, or the next day in thecheck-out queue of the sponsoringsupermarket.
Next time you’re with your child atdancing or sport, next time you’re at aschool presentation, please — look out forthe sponsor’s names, make a mental note.So to the sponsors that make good thingshappen in this area, and to those unsungheroes that give simply because it occursto them to do so — I say thank you.
YES YOU DID IT: Otaki College year 12 students on the ropes at WaiohangaChallenge ropes course at Otaki Gorge. PE teacher Daniel Riggs fills in the details.‘‘Three, two, one — nup, start again. Three, two one, jump. ‘‘Yes! You did it.’’This sequence was repeated many times as 11 year 12 outdoor education studentsattempted and succeeded at the pamper pole at ropes course. The pamper pole involves climbing rungs up a 12 metre telegraph pole, stepping onto the top without anything to hold on to, then leaping to a trapeze. Although veryscary and challenging the student wears a harness for safety and is belayed by twopeople.Other activities on the course had the students wondering if they could possibly dothem, some only being possible by two people working together. But with team co-operation, encouragement and self-confidence, most of the activities werecompleted by the students and a huge amount of fun was had. The studentsreturned to college buzzing with self pride at their achievements.

‘‘Youth Quest, like many charitabletrusts, rely on income raised from withinthe community and this event has blownus away.’’

Walk to help dreams become reality
WALKING AND TALKING:Wheldon Curzon-Hobson will bewalking through Kapiti onNovember 20 and 21 talking toyoung people along the way andgetting their inspiring stories topass on to others.
PHOTO: KAP011113SPLWALKING
ANNREADING
‘‘Some of the most inspirationalstories about young peopletransforming communities bytheir passion and can-do attitudescome from young peoplethemselves.’’
This has been the experience ofWheldon Curzon-Hobson who ispassionate about getting thosestories out to the widestcommunity.
‘‘I’m amazed at the stories I’mfinding, just talking to people. They’re not just the big stories butlots of little stories.
‘‘You know how when you’reyoung you dream that somethingcould happen — well, the youngpeople I’m meeting are dreamingdreams, but with the passion ofyouth are making them happen.’’
Mr Curzon-Hobson isembarking on a week-long
walking project around theWellington region to raise fundsfor collation, publishing anddistribution of a book of thesestories ‘‘so that they may inspireother young people to follow theirdreams with passion’’.
It all started after he had spentsome time in Manila.
‘‘I walked around the slumsthere and was blown away by theextraordinary stories of whatyoung people are doing to bringhope and transformation to theircommunities and environment.’’
He wrote an E-book, Inspiredby Manila, that was downloadedin 115 countries.
More recently, he haspublished a novel, Near a Canal, about the homeless people ofLondon with who he spent sometime.
‘‘They completely inspired me— even though they were
homeless, they were achievingamazing things.
‘‘For me, it doesn’t rely onhaving money, it relies on havingpassion, a dream.
‘‘And that’s the great thingabout hearing a story — you cango ‘Oh — it is possible. I couldactually do this. Or I could link upwith someone else — they’realready doing something I’m keenon’’’.
The motivation for Mr Curzon-Hobson’s walk, which takes himfrom Upper Hutt to Lower Hutt, toWellington, up the Kapiti Coastand on to Palmerston North, is toraise enough funds to launch thisbook, which he wants to distributefree ‘‘to thousands of youth acrossour region to inspire them howthey can make a difference.’’
He says he would like toencourage young people to sendhim their stories (300-3000 words)
and invite them to join him onpart of the walk.
He will be in Kapiti fromNovember 20-21. He should bewearing a Y -STORIES tee shirt(weather permitting), have abackpack and a billy for collectingdonations. Please talk to him ifyou see him.
He will be in Paraparaumufrom about 1pm to 3pm onNovember 20 then walking up toWaikanae where he will stay thenight.
Sponsorship from 5 cents perkilometre ($9) will fund one book.
He is offering a free copy ofNear a Canal to anyonecontributing more than $35.
