We are happy to have aligned the chapter with the Wounded Warrior Project, which states that the “Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP) takes a holis-tic approach when serving warriors and their families to nurture the mind and body, and encourage economic em-
powerment and engagement. Through a high-touch and interactive approach, WWP hopes to foster the most successful, well-adjusted generation of wounded service members in our nation's history”.
Our first event is a fundraiser and benefit concert. We are so excited to be doing such an ambitious project! A donation of any amount is appreciated, even if only a couple of dollars! You can donate to our fundraising portal on the WWP website by clicking here. If you are near Cleveland, TX on May 23rd, come on down to the concert! The concert website is located here and the venue is at the American Legion Hall 393, 25774 HWY 321, Cleveland, TX. The concert is from 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm. Make sure to come say hi to Wes and I!
A HUGE thank you to all of the student ambassadors that have helped with our snail mail advertising cam-paign! You are appreciated!

Kelly Hinds, Psychology Writer
My name is Kelly Hinds. I
live with my husband and
three children in Ohio. I
have a bright and beauti-
ful 8 year old daughter
named Selina, a hand-
some and charming 5
year old little man named
Ethan, and a spunky lovable 2 year old named Sophia.
I currently work as a Program Specialist for a residen-
tial company that provides services for adults with
developmental disabilities. I am a veteran for the US
Army where I served shortly after my first year of col-
lege. I attended Otterbein University for my freshman
year. Prior to coming to Kaplan I was out of school for
12 years! I attend Kaplan full time and I have been a
member of NSCS since February 2015! I have only
been a member a short time, but I plan to take full
advantage of any opportunities I can here. One of
those opportunities is writing for the NSCS newsletter
as the Psychology Writer. I greatly enjoy writing and
my class work. My schedule may seem overwhelming,
but attending Kaplan is like my hobby. It is the time I
spend for myself. It also offers me the chance to show
my children what is possible when you put your mind
to something. My passion in life is people. Anything I
can do with, for, or about people is what inspires me
and makes me happy. I hope that my inspirations can
translate through my articles to become inspirations
for you!

Jennifer Sizemore, Secretary & Business Writer
I am a single mother of 3
boys ages 24, 16 and 8. My
youngest is autistic and I
work very hard to provide a
good and stable life for him.
I have a Bachelor's Degree in
Business Administration and
I am currently working on
my Master's Degree in Legal
Studies. I have not yet decided what I want to do with
my degree; however, I am strongly leaning toward
becoming an attorney. I may change my mind as my
classes get closer to the end. Right now, I am just en-
joying my time here and look forward to all the intel-
lectual challenges that await me.
Spring is here and clean-
ing is in the air! While
most people prepare for
their annual spring clean
there is something else
you should be thinking
about this time of year. Cleaning out the closet helps
you feel refreshed and gives you a chance to get out
with the old and in with the new. This same process
can be applied to the mind!
Winter has ended but the blues are still hang-
ing around. During the winter months it is easy to feel
a lack of motivation, energy, and good moods. As
spring is moving in so should the positive thoughts.
There are ways to take care of the mind and clean out
those negative winter moods. Nothing can be more
motivating than the warm sun and colorful flowers to
ignite the mood outside, so why not find these same
concepts inside of you? Make your own “warm sun
and colorful landscapes” to set the mood from with-
in. Some simple changes can have a major impact.
First thing when you wake up in the morning,
before doing anything else, drink a glass of water and
think of one thing you are thankful for. Starting the
day with a life source and good thought can set the
tone for your mind and body. The body needs water
and the mind needs positive thoughts to thrive. Posi-
tive emotions can guard against stress, depression,
and promote overall health (Dolphin, Steinhardt, &
Cance, 2015). Making your first conscious thought a
positive one every day will become habitual and posi-
tive thoughts will come easier throughout the rest of
your day.
Next try setting a goal to make each day
better for one other person. Whether it is big or
small, focusing on others is a great way to take your
mind away from negative stressors. Adding a goal
encourages the mind to focus. Just like the decrease
in moods, winter blues can decrease the cognitive
abilities. Setting a goal provides many benefits from
motivation to adaptation. Combining goals with posi-
tive intentions increases those benefits throughout
our mind and mood (West, Bagwell, & Dark, 2005).
You may notice that Jennifer’s hair is bright blue! In
support of autism awareness Jennifer recently dyed
her hair this vibrant hue. On April 2nd for Light It
Up Blue Day, Jennifer’s autistic son also sported
blue hair and “loved it” as she exclaimed!
Spring Cleaning Our Minds

After spending time focusing on those around you it
is important not to forget about yourself.
Last but certainly not least, take one day a
week for yourself. Find something that makes you
feel good and take 30 minutes that is only for you. In
this fast paced world where the slowest changes
come in seasons, it is far too easy to forget the things
that we enjoy. Indulge in a local class each week from
painting to jazzercise, have a lunch date with friends,
or spend time alone relaxing to your favorite music.
Setting aside personal time deters the development
of resentment and envy. It gives a sense of identity
and worth that is only achieved when we care for
ourselves. If you follow this routine your “sun” will be
shining inside and out by summer! So put down the
brooms and trash bags. Today it is time to spring
clean our minds!

Dear KUNSCS, I have come back to school in or-der to advance in my career. I have been working in my field for 25 years and working my way up through experience alone, but with the changing times, that is not enough and I need a degree. It seems absurd to me to spend four years studying the subjects I already know so much about. Not to mention, taking myself away from work to do so. Is there any way I can utilize my previous experiences to excel my degree plan?
-Looking to Advance
Dear Looking to Advance, You are in luck! Kaplan offers a course called EL203 that helps students convert their experienc-es into actual credits that can be used towards their degree. Throughout the course, students work on creating a portfolio of their work and life experiences to be submitted for review at the end of the term. If the Prior Learning Assessment Center decides to grant credits for the previous experience outlined in the portfolio, you could end up saving time and money on your education! For more information on the course and to find out if it is right for you contact a Kaplan Learning Advisor.
