INTRODUCTION• Himachal Pradesh is the INDIA’s gateway to the Himalaya
region and key to unlock energy problem.• run-of-the-river hydroelectric power station on the Sutlej
River in Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh, India. • Jaypee Karcham Hydro Corporation Limited of JSW Group
signed a memorandum of understanding to develop the dam in 1993 and after years of delays, construction on the power station began on 18 November 2005.
Location of dam• The dam is
located at 31°30'N, 78°10'E
• located between the villages of Karcham and Wangtoo
Construction of dam• The all work is carried
out by the Jaypee group.
Amazing fact…• Large amount of cutting and filling need to establish the
base camp• 1 year time is required to construct base camp for 14500
people• 541 m divergent channel constructed for diverting water
to river
Construction
• construction on the power station began on 18 November 2005.
• The first generator was commissioned in May 2011, the second in June and the final two in September.
• Two coffer dam are constructed first and a divergent tunnel is constructed to divert water
Challenges for the work• Weathering conditions• No electricity facilities• Road are not available to rich site• Removal of excavated material from site• Leakage of cofferdams and cement grouting• Sedimentation of particles in water• Construction of head raze tunnel• To establish transmission line up to Haryana

• We made corning hole through a core drilling machines
• We found sound rock profile at 52 m depth for dam
• Actual depth of foundation measured after construction is 53 m

• 2mm particles can stop the power plant
• Water comes in sedimentation tank in 4.1 m/s speed and reduces up to 3 m/s
• 53 no of hoppers are provided to remove this particles
• 504 m3/s water can discharge through channel
• World’s largest chamber volumetrically and get chance to place in Guinness book of world record
