HOW THE HOSPICE HOME HELPS KAREN ANN QUINLAN HOSPICE PATIENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES. Residence Care – The patient may need round-the-clock care complete with clinical staff. Perhaps the patient has no family and can no longer stay in his or her home alone. Households with young children and working parents may find it overwhelming to care full-time for a loved one who is terminally ill and needs help outside the home setting. In-Patient Care – A hospice patient temporarily may need more care than the family can provide at home. Respite Care – A temporary patient stay to help ease the role of the caregiver and family.
