MY BELVEDERE

Karim Rashid is one of the most prolific designers of his generation. Over 3000 designs in production, over 300 awards and working in over 35 countries attest to Karim’s legend of design. His work is featured in 20 permanent collections and he exhibits art in galleries world wide. He is a perennial winner of many awards. Karim is a frequent guest lecturer

at universities and conferences globally disseminating the importance of design in everyday life. In his spare time Karim’s pluralism flirts with DJing, art and fashion and is determined to creatively touch every aspect of our

physical landscape.

My house is a recluse, an escape, and a place so close to the city (actually only

45minutes), yet so far. I call it my belvedere (and my love shack). When you travel

as much as I do for work, you never want to get on a plane for vacation. In fact, I

must say I have barely had a vacation in the last 10 years since opening my office

in NYC. I always seemed too busy and found excuses to stay in New York if I had

a few days off. Let’s face it, even business travel is awful. Planes are awful, and the

time zone is a killer. When will the world change to Internet time? When will I be

zapped to another part of the world instantly?

I never thought I would buy a house in the country

because I have so many allergies to grass, trees,

pollen, etc. The city fumes, the urban stench works

well with my system. I decided to start closing my

office for part of August. Incidentally, I would love

to get a petition going with all New York businesses

to shut down during this unbearably hot month

like the freewheeling Europeans, and learn to do

nothing for a month.

It is hard for me to imagine doing nothing for a

day but I am keen to witness the guilty pleasures

of hedonism. I am no sensualist but I thought

I must look for a cottage–like structure. Being

brought up in Canada, seemingly everyone had

cottages (except my family) so I always fantasized

about having one where I could drink beer and kill

mosquitoes. So I took a train to Croton-on-Hudson

and met a real estate agent who showed me 3

costly dumps. Why Croton? Because I promised

myself, after witnessing one weekend in the

nightmare Hamptons, that I would not be caught in

3 hours of traffic every Sunday night like a typical

decorous New Yorker. The beauty about New York,

I thought, is that we are all different culturally and

creative freethinking individuals, until I noticed the

drones of commuting pool-weekenders.

HOME STYLE ■ ARCHITECTURE 07

So if I found a place, it had to be no more than one hour by plane boat, or train – and since I am not one for water, and I

only fly for business, the Metro North train was my only bet (I also have little respect for the automotive industry – all cars

seem the same to me – ugly and overstyled). After looking at those 3 expensive suburban dumps I got back on the train

and said forget it. Maybe we should jump on a plane and go to the Mediterranean where there are no mosquitoes (due to

excessive amounts of poignant colognes being sported by tanned Speedo-clad beach worshippers?). The thought provoked

an Internet search to find a TECH-BUILT 1956 yellow and blue panel system house. A house that seemed to be remote

enough, maintenance free enough, close enough and I could buy it on the Internet.

Tech-built houses were part of the democratic house movement that started with Kit houses from Sears in 1909. One could

buy an entire house from the catalogue and have it delivered and a local construction company would construct it. Just like

Buckminster Fuller’s Dymaxion house and the plethora of other experimental inexpensive kit houses, this house was sold for

a mere $4000 and built in 3 days based on a panel system and post and beam.

The concept of the once-radically new house is that there were no first or second floors, just a basement and an attic. Carl

Koch (the vanguard architect who pioneered TECH-BUILT) explained that a basement becomes the living room and the

attic becomes the bedrooms in a split concept on a single poured concrete slab. Therefore there is no actual basement

or attic. The grid of panels could take windows anywhere so that the houses could be more site specific for views, sun,

light, ventilation. Moving my furniture in seemed perfect and the spirit seemed right (the house only had two owners so the

condition was almost perfect and almost identical to the original 1956 construction). A place of oneiric quality, my wife and

I work there, but most importantly relax, reflect, and rebound. The next dwelling will be one I design – hopefully before I am

50, hopefully made entirely of plastic, and hopefully a 21st century TECHNORGANIC-built house.

KARIM RASHID

Do you reaD Design magazines?

I have not looked at a design magazine in 9 months now.

I think it is hard to focus on your own work with so much

information available. Though I might read design maga-

zines if they focused solely on contemporary design and

not antiquated style.

Where Do you get neWs from?

I read the NYTimes, Herald tribune, Men’s Health, and

research papers on materials, technologies online. I am

also currently reading Daniel Pink’s new book on my lap-

top. But I find I read very little now and write constantly. I

never carry any physical reading material anymore– I think

we should be paperless now – newspapers should not

be allowed on any flights and wireless should be on all

fights. I am paperless, I am wireless, I am global, I am

omnipresent.

We knoW that you are often guest in serbia,

hoW Do you feel When you are here?

I have a fascination with Eastern Europe. I love Serbia and

have a home in Belgrade. I see Eastern Europe as the next

upcoming place. Everyone is psyched and enthusiastic

about the rebuilding of these poetic, fulgent, romantic, and

artistic places that were suppressed for years via socialist /

communist regimes. Everyone I meet in Serbia is so posi-

tive and intelligent. The city is growing rapidly like Moscow,

Dubrovnik, Prague, Budapest, Istanbul, etc.

I am paperless, I am wireless, I am global,

have you alWays WanteD to become

an architect or a Designer?

I realized my life’s mission at the age of 4. I went sketching

with my father in England drawing churches. He taught me

to see - he taught me perspective at that age - he taught

me that I could design anything and touch all aspects of

our physical landscape. I was obsessed with drawing eye-

glasses, shoes, radios, and luggage, throughout my child-

hood.

your favorite Design?

My first baby is the Umbra Garbo garbage can. At that time

of the Garbo’s design, the ubiquitous plastic wastebasket

on the market was a rectangular black can with absolutely

no character and there was little alternative. I thought that

banal objects need life, they need presence, but they also

need to make awful tasks more pleasant. The objective was

to provide the mass market with a highly unique, yet highly

utilitarian waste could, accessible at a very low cost. It had

to be a multi-purpose wastebasket that is beautiful, elegant;

easy to use suits a multitude of different interior environ-

ments. Other objectives were functionality, low-cost so that

it is available to everyone, economical to ship, stackable for

display and merchandising.

My other favorite is the Artemide Doride. I designed the Do-

ride when I was in university at the age of 19 so to see it

you get inspiration…?

I look way beyond design and architecture for inspiration.

Inspiration is accumulative. Everything can be inspiring. It is

how you look at the world. I am inspired by my childhood,

my education, by all my teachers I have ever had, by every

project I have worked on, by every city I have traveled to, by

every book I have read, by every art show I have seen, by

every song I have heard, by every smell, every taste, sight,

sound, and feeling.

your Designs are recognizable for their forms

anD colors, What is your favorite color?

Pink! Pink is my superoptimisitc white. It is energetic, ful-

gent, engaging, and a moxie to the masculine world that

dominates our built landscape. There are so many varia-

tions and shades of pink for every mood, ever person. Pink

also clearly communicates the idea of immateriality, entro-

py, energy, and strong optimism. Pink is the new black!

What Do you think about

Love the size and the content is really fun. If only life looked

as good as it does on the pages of mini STUDIO magazine.

finally realized is a dream come true thirty years later. I envi-

sioned a leaf blowing in the wind, moving in nature, articulat-

ing at a point in the spine, with a thin articulating curvilinear

branch that can rotate seamlessly 350 degrees. The slim

narrow form morphs from direct to indirect light seamlessly.

The leaf is a stroke of a pen, a fluid gesture that changes to

vary light.

THE ART OF LIVING

Living room is a central zone of each

home and a favorite place of all

residents. Resting in the afternoon or

talking to friends includes comfort of

every element in that room.

To create a pleasant ambient, it is

necessary to choose furniture, to

emphasize interesting details or

colors on the wall, but above all you

have to pay attention to dimensions

of the room so there would be

enough space for undisturbed

communication and passing.

17HOME STYLE ■ INTERIOR

When furnishing the living room, you definitely need the help of architects, and we will reveal to you a few small tricks…

sitting garniture

Comfort of sofa is equally important, as well as comfort of beds. So, pay attention that it is filled with polyurethane foam and

comfortable enough for you to stretch out. Make sure to match an unusual armchair or stool with sofa. Colors and patterns

depend on preferences and style you aspire.

tv

Defining a position for the TV depends on the position of sitting garniture itself and the natural light which usually falls to the

side and not directly on the monitor. Preferably it should be perceived from all parts of the room.

[email protected]

shoWcases

Open or closed, high or low, it

depends on a style, needs and tastes.

Try to avoid high closets or cabinets

in the living room.

shelves

Design of shelf is so versatile that

you can choose between unusual

winding or simple forms, and classic

straight lines. Open shelves can

be an ideal solution for storing

books – the type of modern library

integrated in the living room, and

can also be incorporated with the

desktop computer or a fireplace with

armchairs, where you can read your

favorite book or magazine with sound

of crackling fire.

carpet

Softness of carpet contributes to

warmth and charm of every living

room. Emphasized colors and design,

its shape and size particularly affect

the appearance of a living room. In

the room where white color prevails,

the emphasis will be on an unusual

carpet, while in a colored room the

carpet should be neutral.

model:milica mandić

You can decorate space with simplicity of minimalism, yet bring enough liveliness with effective details, for instance cushions

or bright color carpets, unusual lighting, unique chandelier, interesting wallpaper pattern or painted wall in the area. Neutral

tones of furniture will look elegant with floor lamp, vase or bowl in lively colors.

If you aim to the other extreme, a mixture of styles has been represented in modern interiors for a long time. Unlike the

outstanding minimalists, there are people of completely opposite style. Appliance of colors and patterns in all forms and

at different places, the furniture, walls, floors and other details may seem very playful and cheerful, but they still need

to be carefully matched, because it is easy to cross the borderline of taste. You will not go wrong if you use the eternal

combination – black and white.

The versatility of this room offers a variety of equipment options, which mostly depend on your habits. When you realize that

you like to sit separately or to enjoy together, you will easily find the right solution. Bring the positive energy in your space and

feel the art of living.

FENG SHUILIVING ROOM

Since time immemorial people have always had the center

of gatherings in their habitats, whether it is human hordes,

tribes, slaves, serfs or any other form of human relations.

Gathering was mostly around the fire, than around hearth,

a common room, through the saloon, to the living room of

today. It was a long road that experienced various transfor-

mations, depending on the degree of civilization, construc-

tion, rationality, culture, the ideas of architects and other

various influences.

From the Feng Shui’s stand point and its function of

coherence, living room should be beautiful, safe and it

should promise welcoming and strengthen the need for

family gathering by its appearance.

Today there are various forms of living rooms; the form

of a Latin letter L, with sloping roofs, with missing or so

called “beetled” parts. In Feng Shui this is called negative

space which must be treated.

In picture 1 is an example of a living room, regular squa-

re shaped, in sector 9 (sector of reputation) of feng shui

map, partly spreads on sectors 2 and 5, and that way

threatens them.

We will write about irregularities and vulnerable area that

should be treated some other time, and now we suggest

the universal Feng Shui tips for arranging a living room.

■ Furniture in a mild form of octagon allows unimpeded

passage of positive chi energy where all residents and

guests can observe each other and smoothly turn to each

other.

■ When you’re arranging a living room in sector 9 you

should not forget that it is the sector of reputation, so

the small details (pedantry) are not desirable here. Or-

naments, flowers, paintings, etc… with its energy helps

your reputation, speaks for you and reflects your intere-

sts, taste and sophistication. Do not put the mask on the

wall, pictures of war or hunting and objects with dark yin

energy in general. Motifs in the paintings should carry the

healthy yang energy of the living (phoenix, chrysanthe-

mum flowers, Magnolia, a plant Krasula, etc…). Flowers;

it would be best to place a beautiful plant Krasula or a

high plant with round leaves in the left rear corner of the

living room (sector of funds). This place is ideal for a TV

set, music, aquarium, in other words everything that re-

presents movement and life.

ENTRANCE

■ Setup should be balanced and symmetrical, from the fur-

niture, vertical and horizontal forms, to energy and deta-

ils. Cabinets and book shelves by the rules of feng shui

should always be closed, because otherwise with their

blades and energy they create indisposition for which

we often do not know the cause. Be sure to choose the

furniture without sharp edges, corners, carvings and or-

naments. Modern chairs are nice and simple but always

choose those with a high backrest and mandatory armre-

sts. Purchase upholstered furniture made of natural ma-

terials. Synthetic materials are a source of negative shar

chi energy.

■ The colors of the walls (regardless of the fire colors in

sector 9) should be bright and neutral. Walls once colored

with orange may look nice, but the following year due to

fatal invisible energy that will orbit space, they may not

be suitable.

■ The symbols of longevity and wealth are ideal for the living

room. Here you can put all your diplomas, commendations

and photographs with prominent and successful people.

Regarding the lighting in the living room, crystal chandelier

(with 9 bulbs) is desirable, and in the empty corners of the

room place floor lamps since they mildly spread light and

direct chi energy.

For a man to be successful he must be accomplished in

all areas of feng shui map. If he sometimes fails there will

surely come a time to improve things, but once lost repu-

tation, can probably never be returned. So, nourish this

sector.

FILL OUT YOUR DREAMSToday, bedroom has an important role in interior decoration,

because more and more attention is focused on choosing the

main element – bed. We spend the third of our life sleeping

because quality of sleep affects our health. A dream renews

body and spirit, and the intimacy of the room provides

romantic moments, especially if the bed is made for two.

The first stories about beds take us to Egypt. Egyptians had

a high idle position of the bed, with roller pillows and curtains

that are hung in the circular area - canopy. High layers of

Egyptian society were the only people who had their beds

made of wood, sometimes gilded.

The beds of ancient Assyrians and Persians were of similar nature and often decorated with metal, ivory and pearls. In

Greece, they had a wooden frame with boards on the headboard, elbow to the side and drilled on the wider side where

the leather was located. In later period, bed becomes more luxurious, with expensive veneered wood, sometimes of

solid ivory. Roman mattresses were stuffed with a reed, hay, wool or feathers.

FLORENCEModel of this upholstered bed with a rounded headboard is designed by Giuseppe Wigan. The cover which is made of fabric or leather can be

removed. The frame is available in various sizes.

Today, beds are massive, dominant figures in interior. The shape that attracts modern designers is square, less round

and ellipsoidal. Materials have a special priority in the designing of beds. Instead of previous solid wood, linings of

veneered wood are used now, meble fabrics, natural and artificial leather, plastic materials, etc… As a constructive part

of the bed, today as well as before, a wrought iron and a metal in a modified form are used. Dominant colors are ardent,

very dark or very bright. Beds are in one color, rarely colorful or with tracing.

MARILYNDesigner Mario Bellini has designed this model only in the double bed version. Soft and rounded headboard, turns

Marylin into the central figure of the bedroom with the goal to provide a complete comfort for night reading or

watching TV. Meble fabric or leather are fully removable. Manufacturer Flou from Italy. Dimensions 170x200.

Contemporary bed design focuses its attention to every element equally, from the trestles to the mattress. Alongside

the modern manufacturers of bed frames, the mattress manufacturers stand out, too, due to a high level of quality

and comfort. The design of modern beds meets all art tendencies, from the popular rustic and old through the avant-

garde, minimalism and the ultra modern beds. You can create your intimate corner and turn it into your own oasis of

relaxation…

NEW WAVEYoung Serbian designers that will represent Serbia in the largest international festival of talents Salone

Satelite in Milan’s Fair in April, were selected. Ana Kras, Branko Nikolic, Djordje Cukanovic, Jovan Topalovic, Jovana Bogdanovic i Miljana Nikolic will present 12 projects selected in the Young Serbian

Designers contest, for which 170 young talents applied this year.

One of the world’s biggest designers, Konstantin Grcic, was in the jury and the whole contest was organized by a foreign

cultural organization Mikser and the Agency for foreign investments and export promotion “Siepa”, which represents a

model that many other branches of creative and productive industry should look up to.

Very well positioned and designed, Young Serbian designers stand, last year in Milan, caused a great attention of the

narrow expert public, media and guild colleagues from the region and the world, and business people interested in work

of our designers. Young Serbian Designers Exhibition attracted over 200 furniture manufacturers who have expressed

specific interest in exhibited work and with whom the contacts were established with the goal of starting a business

relationship for production and distribution worldwide. As one of the most attractive and most communicative stands,

Young Serbian Designers were visited by over 220 editors and journalists of the most important professional and global

media from 45 countries of all continents and took information considering work of our young designers. Stories about

young Serbian talents appeared in over 100 international media and queries about their work continue to arrive daily.

It is certain that multidisciplinary festival of creativity MIKSER 2010, which for the first time will be held in the whole space

of the Belgrade port in late May this year, will represent not only the achievements of young Serbian designers in Milan, but

also a large number of national creative potential in all areas of creativity – architecture, design, visual art, music, and also

mark the real beginning of a serious struggle for the position of Belgrade as the creative capital of this part of Europe.

DECORATIVE CUSHIONSIn the beginning pillows were a privilege of the rich, and some of them were found in Egyptian tombs. In ancient China

instead of a pillow, a block made of stone, wood, metal or porcelain was used. Tailoring pillows presented a sort of art in

China and Persia, and then in medieval Europe, until industrial revolution brought a massive production and made them

available to everyone. Decorative cushions are very interesting and since the beginning of their usage they had a special

place in palaces and great villas.

www.orchestra.rs

31HOME STYLE ■ DéCOR

In the décor of bedroom and living room,

decorative cushion got an honorary position.

Décor is more than visual atmosphere; it reflects

style, comfort, beauty, warmth, memories and

inspiration. Today it is customary for cushion to

be made of a soft cotton or silk material, quilted

with feathers, fluff, non-woven synthetic material,

wool, buckwheat and other.

New creative and simple approach to decorating

is the use of many, many cushions! There is

a wide variety of shapes and sizes, colors

and materials, textures and design, which will

immediately revive a room and create a modern

and stylish look; like beautiful fluffy examples in

the pictures.

With proper selection of cushions and a few

simple rules, you will get a nice and professional

decorated bed. The key is to choose a few

cushions that will fit into the existing design and

match with your bed cover, material and pattern

such as silk, brocade, damask, satin and velvet.

Arrange cushions in layers, so they

stand on their edges in rows, not laid

down for sleep, because you’ll get a

bunch of stacked cushions. The first

row near the head of the bed should be

higher than others. Place three or five

pieces, depending on the size of the

bed, so they stand on the edges leaning

on the head of the bed. For the first row

you can use ordinary cushions. The

second row should be smaller, made

of decorative fluffy cushions which will

also be arranged to stand on edges and

lean them on the first row. They should

be arranged in the shape of pyramid.

As a last detail, you can place a cylinder

shaped cushion with decorative details

or simply use the small cushions for the

last row.

Although there is no rule, it is better

to start with the smaller number of

cushions, because you can always add

more. Play with colors and patterns

fitting them in the room décor and feel

free to have some fun, rely on your

sense in search for a perfect look that

meets your taste.

35HOME STYLE ■ LIGHTING

LIGHTING EFFECTS THAT TAKE YOUR BREATH AWAYWhether you have a small or large bedroom, it is almost certain that it’s not going to be used only for

sleeping. Dark bedrooms are great for resting but a little effectively used light for some other activities

won’t hurt. Read, sleep, relax and create a romantic ambient for your love nest.

As the time passed bedrooms became larger and although the bed remained a key element, now it

shares space with a TV, a computer, an exercising equipment, wardrobes with cloths or even sitting

garniture. These are all elements that should be taken into account when designing the lighting in

the bedroom. This room should be enriched with diffuse light and other types of lighting that will be

widespread and enhance certain edges or corners of the room. Ceiling lighting should be developed

too, and areas for desk and floor-standing lamps which would best fit in the corners of the room.

Type of light and style depends on the bedroom’s user and their needs. Pairs need individually

controlled reading lamps on both sides of the bed. Children need extra table lamp on the desk for

studying. For the baby it’s necessary to install a dimmer so parents could quietly control the light. For

older people stronger light is needed, but diffuse, because their eyes are additionally sensitive to glare.

MOAI - LEUCOSOf sculptural Polynesian inspiration, Moai is a floor/table lamp consisting of two large scale diffusers of two large scale

diffusers of white satin blown glass. Base of dense resin with bright white, bright black or bright mocha finish.

In the showrooms of lighting you can find

various lights for every taste. Lighting design

is colorful, from neoclassical to ultra modern.

Especially, the development of design in

the light of chandeliers and various hanging

lamps is noted, which leaves enough room

for designers to use different materials, forms

and combine them with different sources of

light. Shopping lamps for the bedroom or

choosing the right look of the lamp is usually

conditioned by a design of furniture, as well as

the materials and colors in the room, because

furniture is a dominant element of the interior

and the light creates a sense of space, so

these two things must be symbiotic.

Finally, if you want to change or refresh

the existing bedroom, consider replacing a

hanging lantern with a modern chandelier

which will provide a new identity to the room,

or lighten the corners with standing lamps

which would become a part of the interior

and complete a romantic experience of this

intimate environment. Lighten your bed at the

bottom edges along the entire volume with

hidden sources of light to get the effect of

hovering in space.

You should play with light, so use your imagination because bedrooms

allow a special inspiration in this regard.

YOUR CORNER“Apartment for adaptation is located in New Belgrade. It has 88m2 and two balconies, of which we plan to keep

only one, and instead of the other one we plan to make a dinning room. Can the entrance to the bedroom which is currently located next to the kitchen be relocated? Since the bathroom is too small for us and our two sons,

we are searching for a new solution to place a washing machine. Please, give us your advice...”?Dragana, New Belgrade

present situation

The apartment is located in a residential building in New Bel-

grade. It has three and a half rooms and the floor space is

sufficient for the existing number of residents. We suggest

the following solution that would meet the needs of our users,

and does not require too much intervention in space, and

does not violate static stability. Supporting walls rather dic-

tate the terms. The existing holes in the supporting wall in

the kitchen cannot be very much expanded. First, you sho-

uld isolate the night form the living zone. The entrance to the

bedroom from the kitchen is neither nice nor practical soluti-

on because the smells from the existing open kitchen could

spread to your bed. To avoid this, the location of the living

room and a bedroom has been switched, which ensures your

privacy, so you don’t pass next to your guests after leaving

the bathroom. Since the room became too large for this type

of purpose, you can fill it with dressers, sitting garniture or a

suggested solution for working space. Because of the lar-

ge dept and not enough natural light, you can set the sliding

walls of sanded glass.

The living room is expanded by retracting a TV cabinet; sli-

ding doors of sanded glass were set along the entire wall of

the terrace, which in summer you can leave completely open.

Gap of a door at the place of the other balcony which is being

removed you can fill with decorative plants in glass with good

light. This will baffle the living room from the dining room, and

visually they will stay connected. By demolition of the other

balcony, you’ve got a space for dining which can be solved by

setting an angular bench along the walls, and on the opposite

sides you get enough room for the chairs and the table that

can be extended when needed. The podium can be placed

at the height of one step so you have enough space for pla-

cing the insulation and still get an interesting effect.

Kitchen: Installations are located in the central zone, in the toi-

let an in the kitchen, which means that it cannot deviate much

from the ventilation channel, with which would be desirable to

set the oven with the extractor fan, because it is too far from

the natural ventilation. The kitchen is semi-opened type with

a bar which has sliding glass partitions, that prevent spre-

If you have resolved your housing problem and are facing equipment, adaptation and regulation issues of your new living space or

wish to bring in novelties and beautify the atmosphere of your home, the architectural “mini studio ■■■” offers professional advice and

ading unpleasant smells during cooking, and again daylight

can pass through them.

Bathroom: Due to the inability to increase the capacity of

bathing facilities, the only bathroom in the apartment will

become more comfortable, when you move a washing

machine in the new store room next to the guest toilet.

This way you get a space that can accommodate a large

bathing tub, rather than shower. Location of the installa-

tion allows us to connect the washing machine, but it’s

necessary before installing tiles in that room, to do a good

hydro insulation.

With your wishes and requirements, we came to a more fun-

ctional space. We want you to enjoy your new surroundings.

TYROLEAN PEARL

KICBIL (Kitzbühel) “Come here, it was so beautiful that I have to slap you”, that is the sentence pronounced by euphoric and snow covered Franz

Reisch, to his friend Josef Harold, who was anxiously waiting on the edge of the mountain. It was a spring of 1893 when

Franz Reisch became a first man ever to ski down from the top of the Horn which rises above the Kitzbil to the height of

1996m.

Avalanche triggered by Franz Reisch was fortunately only metaphorical, and turned this once summer resort into the first

Austrian destination for winter season and winter sports fans. Today, it is a modern ski resort on a high level, with 54 ski lifts

and 67 trails with total length of tremendous 168km. With Austrian passion for skiing and the precision of engineers that are

concerned for this pearl, you will get top service, tracks beautiful as works of art, which will at the very first downhill inject

adrenalin with Kitzbil virus and the long lasting love will be born.

41LIFE STYLE ■ TAKE A TRIP

Since 1931 Kitzbil hosts Hahnenkammrennen races and since 1967 it is a part of a World Cup in disciplines: super-giant

slalom, downhill and slalom. The most famous is Streif (streak or stripe) downhill, where incredible speed of 145km/h can be

reached.

For those less experienced skiers, in the medieval town, there’s a wide range of interesting services in “less speed”. Comfort,

shopping like the one in Manhattan, restaurants and bars for every taste, museums and cultural events makes this center

irresistible and very popular.

Update your English, Russian and German, because here you will meet people from all over the world. Are you a

snowboarder, skier or just a walker, Kitzbil is a challenge that allures you and takes your breath away. If you wish to discover

how Franz Reisch felt back in 1893, tend towards the alpine pearl. Just do not slap your friends from the excitement!

PARADISE ON EARTH

MAURITIUSIf there is a paradise on Earth world travelers say that it is

located on the volcanic origin island in the Indian Ocean

– in Mauritius. It is located approximately 855km east of

Madagascar and 2000km from the east coast of Africa,

with about 1.2 million inhabitants. The capital and the

largest city is Port Louis.

Mauritius was discovered by the Portuguese back in

1505 but this beautiful island was not settled until the

mid 17th century. It was settled as a Dutch colony by

traders, farmers, their slaves, workers, artists… The name

is originally from the Dutch prince Maurice of Nassau. At

the beginning of the 18th century Mauritius became a

French colony, and in the 19th century it became British,

but French institutions have been preserved on the island

till today, and French language is more widespread than

English. Creole language is spoken, too.

Around the island, there is a coral reef like a necklace,

which protects it from large waves and sharks. So the

swimming in the lagoon is completely safe unlike most

other oceanic islands. The island is located in the southern

hemisphere so the arrangement of seasons is opposite

to ours. The hottest weather is in December and January,

from 35-40°C, and coldest in July and August when

daytime temperatures fall to 20°C. The best time to visit is

during May and June when daytime temperature is around

20°C, precipitation is minimal, and there is a lot of Sun.

43LIFE STYLE ■ TAKE A TRIP

There is a wide selection of hotels, nearly two hundred and it is difficult to visit all of them on this beautiful island. The most

attractive part is the Northwest which has a favorable climate because of the mountains that surround it and numerous

hotels located on that part of the island. One of the most exclusive hotels is the Royal Palm, where Hollywood stars stay.

Many beaches are not for swimming because they are crowded with black volcanic rocks. Certainly the most distinguished

beach is the Trou aux Beaches; there is a hotel by the same name, and there you will experience a heavenly sight which is

adorned by the famous white sand like flour, water is turquoise green with perfect transparency and such temperature that

you do not wish to exit from before the nightfall.

Do not miss one day sailing trip by catamaran boat, the Dolphin bay and swimming with this wonderful creatures which

you will remember all your life. You can choose diving, too. You’ll be very surprised if you get surrounded by countless most

beautiful fish in the world in a split second. You may find a whole family of whales. In the south of the island take a walk

through the Crocodile Park and only a few meters further you can see giant turtles.

In the end what we can suggest to you is to treat yourself with a nice arrangement, to visit this Paradise Island and spend

the icy and snowy days in Mauritius, because now is the right time for it there.

PEUGEOT SR1A DREAM CAR ...

44 LIFE STYLE ■ ON THE MOVE

Due to 200 years of existence, as the evidence of moderniza-

tion of Peugeot style, a French manufacturer created a basic

look of SR 1 Peugeot model with a concept vehicle that will

follow the latest trends in design of its vehicles in the near fu-

ture. Ideal proportions, with a long hood, sculpted fl anks and

strong “tail”, SR1 gives the monolith impression, as if carved

of stone. This Coupe-convertible is the embodiment of the

strongest, cleanest and the most extreme style of tomorrow.

With a strong, balan-

ced, sensual, exclusive hi-tech interior, this dream car revives

a theme of “Grand Tourist Roadster”. SR1 uses Hybrid4 te-

chnology with 1.6 petrol engine of 218 HP, while on the rear

axle is the electric motor, with the power of 95 HP. Together

this two engines have the total potential power of 313 HP.

The maximum speed that SR1 can reach is 250km/h, while

4.7 seconds are enough for acceleration. Power is transmi-

tted to all four wheels from the six speed manual gearbox.

The emission of damaging gases is only 119g/km, whi-

le the average consumption is 4.9l/km. With a new Cou-

pe-convertible, Peugeot reaffi rmed the ability to combine

driving pleasure together with care for the human envi-

ronment, emphasizing the ideal combination of emotions

THE SUPERMARKETThe space where once was a discount supermarket, remix studio led by Maja Vidakovic has turned into a supermarket

concept store, dynamic, multi-functional space with unfinished and rough design, which represents the ascetic stage for

the perfect consumer fetish and various hedonistic activities that occur in it. Part with large glass area is for the restaurant,

which unlike the usual catering facilities in this country represents a true revolution based on a concept of a modern fusion.

Kitchen is led by a new gastronomy star, Sam Hollander Veldheer, who has created an interesting menu, colored by different

international influences, mostly Asian. In the restaurant itself, there is an open kitchen where you can watch the cooks while

they prepare some of your specialties like steak Rossini with goose liver, oyster mushroom and Truffles sauce or grilled tuna

steak in a crust of fine herbs with weird potatoes and rue sauce. Unavoidable adventure is certainly enjoying the fresh soups,

starting with Thai chicken soup with coconut or a cream cauliflower soup with blue cheese, and the most demanded baked

pumpkin soup with fresh ginger and coriander.

47FOOD & WINE STYLE ■ HEDONISM OF TASTE

Bar with its offer completes a unique many and is proud

to present its home creations, as well as skill in making

cocktails – Super Sonic, Super Hero, Superman…

Juices are exclusively fresh squeezed and there are a

dozen interesting combinations. Supermarket’s luxurious

representative is certainly a Grand desert, served on a black

board which carries the carrot cake, sticky caramel toffee,

parfe of two types of chocolate, brownie and two kinds

of ice cream. Every weekend DJ Straw is in charge of the

music, with occasional flyouts of the most attractive jazz

and rock bands. Sunday is reserved for the jazz brunch

where to the sound of live jazz band you can enjoy a special

menu – selected culinary specialties from different parts of

the world: American, French, Mexican and Asian menu. It is

definitely a part of the future that came early to us.
