The suprarenal glands, also known as adrenalglands, belong to the endocrine system. They area pair of triangularshaped glands, each about 2in. long and 1 in. wide, that sit on top of thekidneys (see the image above). The suprarenalglands are responsible for the release ofhormones that regulate metabolism, immunesystem function, and the saltwater balance in thebloodstream; they also aid in the body's responseto stress.

ADRENAL FATIGUE

As you might expect, fatigue is one of the mostcommon Adrenal Fatigue symptoms. However it isfar from the only one that we see. AdrenalFatigue leads to lower levels of a number ofhormones, and those hormones can affect everypart of our bodies. Every case tends to presentitself slightly differently because we are all uniquein how our bodies handle stress.

Typically, a patient presenting with AdrenalFatigue will have most or all of the commonsymptoms listed here, along with a handful of theless common symptoms. Take a look and see howmany apply to you.

COMMON SYMPTOMS

DIFFICULTY GETTING UP EACH MORNING,EVEN AFTER A LONG SLEEPOne of the major causes of Adrenal Fatigue is lackof a good night sleep and getting good sleep isalso one of the best ways for our body to recover. With Adrenal Fatigue many patients wake upextremely tired and 'foggy' even after getting along sleep. This can be caused by one of two factors. AdrenalFatigue sufferers in the early stages tend to beunder significant stress, and therefore theiradrenaline and cortisol levels are high. Thisinterrupts the natural 24hour cycle of cortisollevels, leading to a state of permanent alertnessthat prevents restful sleep which startsa viscous cycle. Later stages of Adrenal Fatigue will haveconsistently lower levels of cortisol. However, their blood sugar will tend to be much lowerduring the early morning (cortisol regulates bloodsugar too) when it should be elevated. Your bodyrealizes it's hungry and forces you to wake up.Many Adrenal Fatigue sufferers are chronic latenight eaters for exactly this reason.

HIGH LEVELS OF FATIGUE EACH DAYIn the later stages of Adrenal Fatigue, youradrenals become unable to produce enough of thehormones that you need. This means that your

levels of cortisol, along with neurotransmitterslike adrenaline and norepinephrine, are lowerthan they should be.The lack of these crucial hormones explains howpatients suffering from Adrenal Fatigue find itdifficult to 'lift' themselves or maintain any kind ofreasonable energy level throughout the day. Onegood example would be a feeling of "heavy legs."There is one exception though (see below) Adrenal Fatigue sufferers sometimes experience abounce in energy in the late evening.

INABILITY TO HANDLE STRESSAdrenal Fatigue sufferers often have a difficulttime dealing with physical or emotional stresswhich is why this question is on our intake form. It's hard to handle any level of stress when yourtired right? When we encounter stress we depend on ouradrenals to release hormones like cortisol, adrenaline and norepinephrine. These hormonesregulate our stress response and allow us toincrease our strength, focus and awareness whenwe need it and for a short period of time. However, when the adrenals are chronicallyfatigued they struggle to release the necessaryamount of these hormones. Patients with AdrenalFatigue often report a lack of enthusiasm, feelingsof apathy or disinterest, irritability and anxiety.

CRAVINGS FOR SALTY FOODSPart of the adrenals called the cortex isresponsible for producing aldosterone, amineralocorticoid which works with the kidney toregulate our fluid and mineral excretion. Whenthe adrenals become fatigued, we produce lessaldosterone and we tend to excrete largeamounts of important minerals in our urine.Individuals with depleted endocrine systems oftenreport frequent urination, which is oftenattributed to age but may actually be caused bydepleted adrenals. This means that Adrenal Fatigue suffererseffectively lose the ability to balance the levels ofminerals like sodium, potassium and magnesiumin their blood. In turn, this leads to cravings forfoods which will replace the sodium that we havelost. If you find yourself suddenly craving salty

snacks, you could be suffering from AdrenalFatigue.

HIGHER ENERGY LEVELS IN THE EVENINGSThe lower levels of cortisol can play havoc withour energy levels throughout the day. In ahealthy person, cortisol reaches its highest levelearly in the morning before declining graduallythroughout the day. However, some AdrenalFatigue sufferers experience spikes in cortisol inthe late afternoon and evening.A typical progression is to find yourself tired allday, then suddenly get a bounce in your energylevels late in the evening. This tends to occur inthe earlier stages of Adrenal Fatigue, when theadrenals are still capable of producing significantamounts of cortisol and adrenaline.

A WEAKENED IMMUNE SYSTEMCortisol has an antiinflammatory effect that helpsto regulate your immune system. Inflammation isoften simply a sign that your body is fighting aninfection, but cortisol prevents this reaction fromgetting out of control so you don't end up withchronic inflammation. Maintaining an balancedcortisol level not too low and not too high is animportant part of our health.Without a properly functioning immune system, you become vulnerable to disease. A lower levelof cortisol allows your immune system to overreact to pathogens which sets of an alarm in thebody. This can lead to chronic inflammation and anumber of respiratory or autoimmune diseasesas well as food sensitivities.Adrenal Fatigue treatment should focus onrestoring cortisol to a sustainable, balanced level.

OTHER SYMPTOMSThere are a large number of other complaints thatare associated with Adrenal Fatigue. Many ofthese are linked directly to one of the morecommon complaints listed above. Depending onwhich stage of Adrenal Fatigue you have reached, you may be experiencing a handful or a largenumber of these symptoms.

A Few Tips on Diet

Time your meals When we go for long periods without food, ouradrenal glands work hard to release more cortisoland adrenaline, to try to maintain the body'snormal functioning. When our blood sugar dips forextended periods, this creates a stress reaction, taxing the adrenals. For people who skipbreakfast this is an important step. Eat proteinwithin an hour of waking up to "break the fast."

Choose The Right FoodsStress and exhaustion, when combined withhunger, can impede our ability to make healthychoices. When we aren't aware of the effects thattoo much of a bad thing like caffeine and refinedcarbohydrates have on our bodies, we may notrealize we are affecting our health. I oftenrecommend a glutenfree diet and limited caffeineto my patients who are suffering from adrenalfatigue as well as keeping sugar below 25 gramsper day. See our Optimal Food List

Eat Good SaltIf you experience lightheadedness when you getout of bed in the morning, or when you get out ofa hot bath or shower, you may have hypotensionor low blood pressure. This is a common sideeffect of adrenal insufficiency, so adding goodqualitysalt, such as Celtic sea salt orpink Himalayan salt could be helpful to manage

Why Nutraceuticals?

Nutraceuticals are made fromnatural substances such as

herbs and foods, therefore thebody recognizes it as a helperand has the ability to heal

itself.

With pharmaceuticals, because they are syntheticallycreated in a lab, the bodydoesn't recognize it as a

helper so the pharmaceuticalstend to take over the bodiesability to naturally heal itself.
