Karoo News Term 3 Week 7 Wednesday 24th August, 2016 SCHOOL FOYER MONITOR Featuring .. Chesterfield Farm Respect Responsibility Excellence Honesty & Fairness Tolerance & Understanding Principal’s Comments Children’s Book Week The whole school is celebrating Children’s Book Week with illustrator visits and the Book Parade. The library is open every day at lunchtime this week and there are classroom activities. As mentioned in previous newsletters - any simple costume for the Book Parade is great, or students may carry a favourite book. To start the week off I read ‘The Cow Tripped Over the Moon’ as the students watched on the Interactive Whiteboard in their classrooms. The book is written by Tony Wilson and illustrated by Laura Woods. We give a special thank you to our librarians Michelle Mitchell and Sue Austin for their enthusiasm and organisation. Out of School Hours Care In the media over the weekend there were articles relating to the cost of Out of School Hours Care by private providers. At Karoo our outstanding program is school based as a School Council operation. We have excellent staff who operate the service with care and professionalism providing a safe and supportive program. We are very grateful to Melissa Newlands the manager of the service and for the personal attention she and the staff provide for the well-being and development of the children in the program. Operational funds provide resources for the program and some resources are available for school use. So the Karoo OSHC program benefits our students with the quality of the care and the resources provided. GATEWAYS Programs Currently we hold GATEWAYS programs which develop and extend children's special abilities at Karoo and different programs are held in other schools. Parents are able to check out the GATEWAYs website and book in your child for a program at Karoo or at another site. The programs are aimed at students who have a special talent, gift or interest in a field. Teachers may invite students to register and parents may make the choice to register at the website. www.gateways.edu.au. The final program in the Eureka Series 2016, ‘Heroes and Villainsfor students in Years 1 and 2 will be held in November at Mountain Gate Primary. The program presents tales of heroes and villains and their quests, enchantments and battles. The adventures and tales will serve as tools for examining story structure, character development and cultural values. ‘Heroes and Villains’ will ask students to use deduction and deconstruction to explore the characters and their journeys and then write their own creative quests. Further details for programs can be found on the website. Father’s Day Stall Next week the KPA is holding a Father’s Day Stall on Wednesday 31st August and Thursday 1st September. Each class will have an allocated time to visit the stall during the day. The great selection of gifts is on display in the library window. If you have a spare hour to two to assist serving at the stall on either of the days, please complete and the tear off slip attached to this newsletter. PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND SPORTS NEWS

District Athletics Day Last Friday many students from our Year 4-6 classes, competed along with students from the other seven district schools at the Annual District Athletics Day. Despite the rain the day ran smoothly, with only high jump and hurdles not going ahead due to

safety concerns. Each athletics team member was awarded points according to their finishing place in their particular track or field event. So every student who participated in our team contributed to the overall Karoo total score. Our Karoo Athletics Team finished in fourth place out of the eight schools participating. This is a great achievement and a most consistent result for the school. Well done to all the students on their very fine efforts and personal best achievements on the day. The students all supported and cheered each other on and exhibited wonderful sportsmanship. Thank you to the teachers who attended and to the Karoo parents who assisted by travelling on the bus with the students and by taking on the role of finishing marshals. Your assistance was greatly appreciated.

Year 3 and 6 LAPS Clinics The Year 3 and 6 classes had a Little Athletics session, during this week. The sessions were conducted by Knox Little Athletics Centre. Claire from the Knox Little Athletics Centre provided the classes with lots of fun and involvement in each session. Year 3 students were introduced to running events such as sprinting and relays, jumping events such as long jump

or triple jump and throwing events such as shot put. Year 6 students were also provided with coaching and tips to improve their techniques. Some of our students are already attending the Knox Little Athletics Centre and were able to endorse what they explained to the classes about it being a fun and worthwhile weekend activity and all about doing your personal best. All students attending the sessions received a flyer with information about Little Athletics and how to register. Other Karoo students who would like to go to the centre’s Try Out Day on September 17th, can contact Knox Little Athletics Centre by phoning the President, Steven Lillie on 0409 231 380 or going to the website – wwwklac23.org.au

There are also some extra flyers in the SPORT notice holder outside the general office. Women’s Victorian Cricket Team Player visits Karoo Teams A huge thank you to parent Julie Plant for organising a training session for our Year 6 Cricket teams, with Victorian cricketer

Sarah Elliot. Sarah has also, until recently, captained the Melbourne Renegades team. Julie was able to arrange for the visit via her contacts at the Eildon Cricket Club. Julie has been a keen supporter of our cricket teams, along with Kylie Lewis, assisting at Year 6 sport training and organising extra lunchtime training sessions. Thanks so much Julie!!
