Kaslo Jazz Etc Festival * July 30 - August 1, 2010 * Kaslo, BC2
On behalf of the Kaslo Jazz Etc. Society I would like to
welcome you to our 19th annual festival. Again, we will meet
for another weekend of great music and festivities. This
year’s music program has a tough act to follow, considering
last year’s line up; however, I feel we have out done ourselves
once more. As well, we have continued to tweak and fine
tune, making even more changes which we feel will add to
your festival experience. Change must be a constant if we
are going to continue to flourish as one of North America’s
top ten venues. (USA TODAY 2007)
This year’s program offers a multitude of entertainment
opportunity. Friday night will begin with South Thunderbird,
a 1st Nations blues band out of Winnipeg, followed by
the eloquent Ruthie Foster. This will be Ruthie’s second
appearance at Jazz Fest. Saturday’s line up is loaded with
variety. Blues, rockabilly, silky, sultry, smooth and jagged
jazz, circus sound, and hot Latin dance will fill the day.
Sunday will continue with hot lick blues guitar, flamenco
and Latin beat, jazz standards and originals, instrumentals
and vocals, and jazz fusion. Outreach workshops will occur
on all three days prior to our daily program, followed by jazz
and blues jams each night.
This year, we have carefully changed some of the spatial
elements of both site layout and program scheduling. The
site itself will feel less crowded, making it more convenient
for you to enjoy the food court, various vendors, or just
simply cruise and peruse. We have eliminated the up-stage,
putting all acts front and centre. This will allow us to provide
better viewing and sound in our natural amphitheatre. We
have also arranged for a little extra down time between
performers to allow you to revitalize before the next act.
Kaslo Jazz Etc. Festival could not function if it wasn’t for
our community’s hands-on involvement. Hundreds of
people give their time and effort to help make this event
a success. Reciprocity, between the KJES, its volunteers,
sponsors, regional businesses, local, provincial and federal
governments, makes this great event happen.
Again, thank you and welcome to
Kaslo Jazz Etc. Festival 2010.

For the better part
of a decade, the
progressive jazz
power-trio known as The
Bad Plus – Ethan Iverson
(piano), Reid Anderson
(bass) and Dave King
(drums) – have created
a singular aesthetic
force that challenges
commonly held ideas
of what differentiates
one style of music from
another.
They present a
highly original mix of
rock and pop songs,
original compositions
and classical pieces;
reworked with an
intense but egalitarian
approach. On stage, the quality and integrity of music by
the likes of Yes, Rush, Bowie, Black Sabbath and Blondie
are transformed alongside the likes of Stravinsky, Babbit
and Ligeti. “They’re all pieces that we’ve all had emotional
responses to in the moment, to the point where we said,
‘Well, let’s just do this’”, says Iverson. At the same time,
“We’re not going to treat one kind of music like high art
and another like disposable entertainment,” says King. “We
consider the whole spectrum to be worthy of our detailed
attention and worthy of the same respect.”
“The 20th century is filled with music by great composers,
but it’s a mistake to assume that all of those composers are
limited to classical or jazz or other types of music that are
commonly considered to be ‘high art,’” says Iverson. “There
were rock and pop songwriters of that same period whose
work was just as significant as the work of the classical
composers. They’re all part of a continuum of great music,
and as such, they’re all worthy of recognition and respect...
recognizing the value of every aspect of 20th century
music, regardless of the genres in which their composers
specialized.”

For more than three decades and after more than thirty
recordings, Spyro Gyra has maintained a position at
the forefront of modern, popular jazz by successfully
managing several feats of creative dexterity. “That’s what
has kept this band going,” says Beckenstein. “There are
always balances to be found - between the
individual player and the group, between
the songwriter and the player. It’s about
both satisfying yourself and satisfying your
audience. And when you’re improvising in
front of a crowd, you’re really walking down
that wire. There are always surprises that way,
but our openness to those surprises is what
makes this band what it is.”
While heavily influenced by the fusion sounds
of the 1970’s, including Return to Forever,
Miles Davis and Weather Report, Spyro Gyra
managed to appeal to a somewhat broader
audience than some of the earlier fusion bands,
and to build a legacy of devoted listeners. Band
member Beckenstein says, “...Whether it’s
touching their emotions or connecting them
to something that reminds them of something
much bigger than themselves, there’s this
beauty in music that’s ... very transportive. I
would hope that when people hear our music or come to
see us, they’re able to share that with us. That’s the truly
glorious part of being a musician.”

MonkeyJunk is a band that draws heavily on the
legends of the blues and translates that influence
into a contemporary blend of swamp R&B, soul
boogie and bedroom funk. This triple threat trio comprised
of Steve Marriner, Tony D and Matt Sobb draws on nearly
sixty years of combined experience playing blues live and
in studio and it shows.
In 2008, MonkeyJunk was nominated for a Maple Blues
Award for best new artist - after only having been
in existence for 6 months and without a record. In
February 2009, MonkeyJunk represented Canada at
The International Blues Challenge held in Memphis, TN;
competing amongst 100 bands from all over Europe,
Australia and North America. After the smoke cleared on
Beale St., MonkeyJunk placed third overall.
In April 2009, MonkeyJunk released their debut CD, Tiger In
Your Tank, to critical acclaim thanks to strong support from
satellite radio and CBC Radio (Canada Live and Saturday
Night Blues) as well as many specialty blues radio shows
from all over the world. MonkeyJunk was also featured on
Dan Aykroyd’s internationally syndicated “House Of Blues
Radio Hour”, Oct 4th, 2009 as the ‘bluesbreaker of the
week’. The band toured from coast to coast in Canada and
played at festivals including Montreal International Jazz
Festival and the Ottawa Bluesfest.
In 2010, MonkeyJunk was nominated for six Maple Blues
Awards and took five of them. At the Canadian Independent
Music Awards, March 2010, MonkeyJunk won Best Blues
Artist. They are currently nominated for a 2010 Blues
Music Award (USA) for Best New Artist Debut.

Ruthie Foster’s
latest musical
offering, The
Truth According to
Ruthie Foster, tackles
life’s big issues and
repeatedly testifies
to her core message
- that through all
of life’s ups and
downs, you must
stay true to yourself
and the music it
brings out. Fans of
the Kaslo Jazz Etc.
Festival will well
remember Ruthie’s
performance in
2004 as one of
the most widely
appreciated and
talked about shows
in the Festival’s
history.
Ruthie’s performance career has taken her from choir lofts
to folk bistros and onto stages in Europe, Australia and
North America. There’s Southern blues in her groove, rock
in her rhythm, a blend of gospel redemption, country poetry
and jazz elegance in her singing; at the core burns the heat
of soul music. Lately, Foster set up shop in the legendary
Ardent Studios, cutting almost everything live and going
for feeling above all else. The credo that has guided her
on musical and personal journeys ever since growing up in
Texas.
With a sound that ignores demographic lines and a charisma
that can ignite any audience, Foster is an artist of all-
encompassing appeal. This was only a matter of time. Even
as a young girl, she was taking in a wide variety of music,
whether through the hymns her mother taught her, the
Beatles songs she analyzed in a book given by her guitar
teacher, the 45s her truck-driving uncle would drop off during
his visits, the old-school country she heard while watching
various country variety shows with her grandfather, or the
pop songs that crackled through the family radio.
It didn’t matter to me what genre it was,” she remembers.
“I just took it all in as great music - music that moved me.”

This group brings
together the vision
of several musicians
from different backgrounds
and apprenticeships who
interpret Mexican musical
themes as a basic repertoire.
Camilo Nu presents a musical
potpourri that delights
the ears with the sound of
flamenco, jazz and Latin
beat, sounds which identify
each member of the group. The Camilo Nu Band has been
labeled by well-versed music critics as “world jazz”. The
musicians who have joined together to create this project
have traveled to many parts of the world to discover music
and maestros from these same music genres- places such as
Morocco, Spain, USA, Cuba, Argentina, Mexico, and France to
name a few- jamming and sharing their ideas with musicians
in clubs and well-attended music festivals.
You’ll discover the band’s sound is reminiscent of French
jazz that then takes on a Mexican “jarocho” sound and
gently eases into Andalusia music and Latin jazz – a cocktail
of sound that involves different ways of feeling and thinking
into a single language.
Terminal Station is
a Blues-Rock band
in the best sense of
the word. They take the
traditional blues sound
and kick it into high gear.
Their music is raw and
exciting – full of fat bass
lines, explosive drumming,
risk taking guitar solos
and impassioned vocals.
The members of Terminal
Station, Liam MacDonald
(drums), Jeremy Holmes
(bass), and Scott Smith
(vocals, guitar), have
been key players in Vancouver’s blues and roots scene for
the better part of a decade. They have played with such
Vancouver artists as Herald Nix, Ridley Bent, Michael
Kaeshammer, Jim Byrnes, Rich Hope, Aaron Pritchett,
Bocephus King, Headwater, Bottleneck, and Cousin Harley.
Over the last few years, Terminal Station has played
hundreds of shows and earned a reputation as a must see
live act.

W ith over twenty years of playing with the finest jazz
musicians in the U.S. & Canada, Cheryl Hodge has
certainly made her mark. In Nov 2009 she was the
“featured artist of the month” on COAST To COAST AM with
George Noory, with spotlight on the latest cut “That’s Why
I’m Here”, from faculty album, “SOUVENIR”. Winner of the
GRINDIE Award from RadioIndy.com Cheryl continues to be
a headliner and adjudicator at several jazz festivals. She
has been a top ten artist in jazz charts for ‘09 with songs:
“Indigo” and “Guide to Recovery”, “Give In”, “Do You”,
and “Adios” from ‘09 Indigo Album, featuring Brad Turner
on trumpet, and John Stowell on guitar, and other greats.
Hodge is a gifted pianist and isn’t afraid to visit the outer
stretches of “scatting” yet loves singing R&B (think Etta
James). Currently she has happily headed up the vocal and
songwriting departments at Selkirk College, Nelson, British
Columbia.
www.cherylhodge.com
Jude Davison has been writing, recording, and
performing original music for over 25 years. His songs
have been heard on radio and featured on TV shows
and films around the world. His latest album, Circo de
Teatro is truly unique sounding and borrows and combines
sounds from Americana, Roots, R&B, Dixieland and Mexican
Mariachi music, and forges this with the theme of a traveling
circus.
Since its release in 2009 it has been garnering rave
reviews around the world. The Georgia Straight (Vancouver)
called it “a sonically ambitious CD, peopled with colorful
characters”, while All Access Magazine (Los Angeles) called
it “a spectacle of sound . . . think Fellini meets Estrella
de Jalisco de Ernesto Molina after they had coffee at the
Country Music Hall of Fame”. Consistently though, the
album gets compared to Tom Waits and Allgigs (UK) went
as far as to suggest, “what say Tom Waits does a cover of
‘Amphetamine Sam’ for his next album, it work a treat”.
Utilizing a 10 piece band of some of Nelson’s finest and most
seasoned musicians - Bessie Wapp, Sydney Gailbraith, Craig
Korth, Tim Bullen, Keith Todd, Rick Lingard, Mark Spielman,
Darren Mahe, Steven Parish - this performance will bring to
the stage the album in its entirety.

Guitar player, singer and songwriter Arsen Shomakhov,
was born in 1969 in the North Caucasus town of
Nalchik, Russia. An old family piano was Arsen’s
first musical instrument. Later he discovered a passion
for the guitar and began his self-education listening to the
recordings of jazz and blues greats. He released two albums
in Russia – Heavy Steppin’ (2002) and Troublemaker (2003)
and soon found himself in the limelight of public attention
with the help from the radio program “All That Blues” and
the national TV channel “Culture”.
Arsen is highly sought after for European blues festivals and
his songs are played on numerous blues radio and internet
