36 Build it Green Conference – Beirut – March 30th 2011
Sustainable Architecture: Passive Ventilation
• Air movement between buildings is enhanced by two solar towers that use the sun’s
energy to draw air through the spaces between buildings
• The solar towers act as great passive ventilation engines that pull air through the
spine and courtyards using sun’s (Over 150,000 cfm of air flow = 255,000 m3/h)
37 Build it Green Conference – Beirut – March 30th 2011
• Terracotta Cladding on BACKWALL SYSTEM: 10 cm (R-20) continuous
extruded polystyrene insulation and steel frame infill, U-Value = 0.2 W / m².K
• Spandrel glass with R-24 insulation, U-Value = 0.2 W / m².K
• Fenestration Assembly U- Factor = 2 W / m².K
• Built-up Roof Insulation (Rockwool) entirely above deck, R-36 continuous
insulation, U-Value = 0.14, Reflectivity = 0.30
High Efficient Buildings Enveloppe
38 Build it Green Conference – Beirut – March 30th 2011
External shading systems were utilized throughout the campus to limit solar heat
gains and reduce loads: Louvered window shades, Fins, Overhangs…
Energy Conservation Measures
Cooling loads is very significant energy factor due to solar heat gain & occupant comfort
Building adjacencies contribute to limiting
solar heat gains.
