A MANUFACTURED FIBER IN WHICK THE FIBER FORMINGSUBSTANCE IS A LONG-CHAIN SYNHETIC POLYAMIDE IN WHICH LESS THAN 85% OF THE AMIDE-LINKAGES ARE ATTACHED DIRECTLY (-CONH-) TO TWO ALIPHATIC GROUPS. POLYAMIDES ARE VERY ELASTIC POLYMERS. POLYAMIDE HAS A HIGH BREAKING LOAD. POLYAMIDEROPE LOSES 10-15% OF ITS STRENGTH WHEN WET. THE ABRASION RSISTANCE OF POLYAMIDE IS BETTER IN WET CONDITIONS THAN INDRY CONDITIONS. POLYAMIDE CAN BECOME STIFF (KEPT IN WET CONDITION FOR TOO LONG.) THE MOST IMPORTANT POLYAMIDES ARE PA6 AND PA 6.6 POLYAMIDE IS USED FOR MOORING LINE, SPORT CLIMBING ROPES, SAFETY RESCUE ROPES.
FIRST COMMERCIAL POLYESTER FIBER PRODUCTION: 1953, DUPONT COMPANY. POLYESTER IS A CATEGORY OF POLYMERS WHICHCONTAIN THE ESTER FUNCTIONAL GROUP IN THEIR MAIN CHAIN. POLYESTER IS THE MOST DURABLE OF THE COMMON MATERIALS. IT HASGOOD BREAKING LOAD AND LOW ELONGATION. IT HAS GOOD RESISTANCE AGAINST SUNLIGHT, EXTERNAL ABRASION. POLYESTER DOES NOTTHE COVER (PROTECTION AGAINST UV RADITION) IN THE HIG-TECH ROPES AND IS MOST WIDELY USED FIBER IN YACHTING ROPES ASWELL AS FOR ANCHORING LINES.
POLYETHYLENE IS A THERMOPLASTIC POLUYMER CONSISTING OF LONG HYDROCARBON CHAINS. A POLYOLAFIN RESIN, PRODUCED FROM THE POLYMERIZATION OF ETHYLENE GAS, AND USED IN THE PRODUCTION OF MANUFACTURED FIBER. POLYETHYLENE IS SIMILAR TOPOLYPROPYLENE IN ITS PROPERTIES BUT HAS A HIGHER SPECIFIC GRAVITY AND A LOWER MELTING POINT.
FIRST COMMERCIAL OLEFIN FIBER PRODUCTION: 1958, OLEFIN MONOFILAMENTS FOR VARIOUS SPECIALIZED USES; 1961, HERCULESINCORPORATED, TEXTILE GRADE MULTIFILAMENT POLYPROPYLENE. OLEFIN FIBERS (POLYPROPYLENE AND POLYETHYLENE) ARE PRODUCTS OFTHE POLYMERIZATION OF PROPYLENE AND ETHYLENE GASES. POLYPROPYLENE IS LIMIED TECHNICAL PROPERTIES. THEREFORE VERY RESISTANT AGAINST CHEMICALS. ABRASION AND TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE ARE SUFFICENT. POLYPROPYLENE FIBERS CAN BE PRODUCED IN NUMEROUS WAYS; MULTIFLAMENT, MONOFILAMENT, FILM, STAPLE FIBER. HIGH MODULUS POLYETHYLENE IS ONE OF THE STRONGEST AND LIGHTEST FIBERS AVAILABLE. A BRIGHT WHITE POLYETHYLENE, IT IS 15 TIMES STRONGER THAN STEEL, MORE DURABLE THAN POLYESTER AND HAS A SPECIFIC STRENGTH THAT IS 40% GREATER THAN ARAMID FIBER. WITH OUTSTANDING TOUGHNESS AND EXTRAORDINARY VISCO-ELASTIC PROPERTIES, HIGH MODULUS POLYETHYLENE CAN WITHSTAND HIGH LOAD STRAIN RATE VELOCITIES. THE ONLY DISADVANTAGE IS THAT IT CREEPS.
