for transcritical CO2 applications.
InformationThe compressors 2MTE..6CTE,4PTC..4CTC, 4PTEU..6CTEU and4PTC-7.F3K..4KTC-10.F4K are exclusively in-tended for use in transcritical applications withCO2 as the refrigerant. They may be used, for example, in heat pumps, medium temperature systems, medium temper-ature stages of booster and cascade systemsand for parallel compression.
These refrigeration compressors are intended for incor-poration into refrigeration systems in accordance withthe 2006/42/EC Machinery Directive. They may only beput into operation if they have been installed in the ma-chines according to these Assembly/Operating Instruc-tions and if the overall system complies with the applic-able legal provisions (applied standards: see declara-tion of incorporation).
The compressors have been built in accordance withstate-of-the-art methods and current regulations. Partic-ular importance was placed on user safety.
These Operating Instructions and the enclosed Operat-ing Instructions KB-104 must be kept available next tothe refrigeration system during the whole service life ofthe compressor.

2 Safety
2.1 Authorized staff
All work on CO2 compressors and CO2 refrigerationsystems requires a specific training and expertise inhandling CO2 as a refrigerant and shall only be per-formed by qualified staff who have been trained and in-structed accordingly. The qualification and expertknowledge of the personnel must correspond to thelocal regulations and guidelines.
2.2 Residual risks
The compressor may present unavoidable residualrisks. That is why any person working on this devicemust carefully read these Operating Instructions!
The following regulations shall apply:
relevant safety regulations and standards (e.g.EN378, EN60204 and EN60335),
generally accepted safety rules,
EU directives,
national regulations.
2.3 Safety references
are instructions intended to prevent hazards. Safety ref-erences must be stringently observed!
!!NOTICESafety reference to avoid situations which mayresult in damage to a device or its equipment.
CAUTIONSafety reference to avoid a potentially hazard-ous situation which may result in minor or mod-erate injury.
WARNINGSafety reference to avoid a potentially hazard-ous situation which could result in death or seri-ous injury.
DANGERSafety reference to avoid an imminently hazard-ous situation which may result in death or seri-ous injury.
KB-130-74
2.3.1 General safety references
DANGERObserve the high pressure levels of the refriger-ant CO2!At standstill the pressure in the system will riseand there is a risk of bursting!Install pressure relief valves on the compressorand on the aspiration and high-pressure sides insystem sections that can be cut off from bothsides.Requirements and design according toEN378-2 and EN13136.
: Critical temperature 31.06C corresponds to73.84bar, see chapter Pressure and saturated vapourtemperature table for CO2, page 15.
DANGERLiquid CO2 evaporates quickly, cools down atthe same time and forms dry ice!Danger of cold burns and frost bites!Avoid uncontrolled deflating of CO2!When filling the system with CO2, wear glovesand goggles!
InformationAll transcritical BITZER CO2 compressors areequipped with a pressure relief valve to the at-mosphere on the high-pressure side and option-ally on the low-pressure side too. However they do not replace the safety valvesof the system (EN12693)!Make sure that a free discharge to the atmo-sphere of the pressure relief valves is possible.Do not mount any pipes near the outlet of thepressure relief valve!
CO2 systems show typically low fluid temperatures. De-pending on the type and the construction of the system, the condenser and the liquid receiver, or only the liquidreceiver and if necessary the heat exchanger shall beinsulated to avoid air temperature at the surface to fallbelow the dew point temperature.
During standstill of the system and if necessary, takeother measures to limit the high pressure, such as:
Using a pressure compensation vessel.
For larger systems: mounting an additional cool-ing unit to limit the pressure by back condensa-tion.
Max. admissible pressure of the housing (as specifiedon the name plate):
(from series No. 1680518739)
Low-pressure side: 100bar
High-pressure side: 160bar
Minimal opening pressure of the pressure relief valvesto the atmosphere
Low-pressure side: 90bar
High-pressure side: 148bar
Maximum admissible pressures during operation
See Application limits in brochures KP-130, KP-132and KP-133.
For compressors with line start permanent magnet mo-tors (LSPM)
WARNINGStrong magnetic field!Keep magnetic and magnetizable objects awayfrom compressor!Persons with cardiac pacemakers, implantedheart defibrillators or metallic implants: maintaina clearance of at least 30 cm!
!!NOTICEThe PTC temperature sensor integrated in thestator as a standard protects the LSPM motorfrom overload when the temperature rises (e. g.in case of prolonged locked rotor conditions). Itis recommended installing an additional over-load protective device that reacts more quickly, since repeated locking conditions would dam-age the magnets.

Special applications
The use of the 2MTE..6CTE, 4PTC..4CTC,4PTEU..6CTEU and 4PTC-7.F3K..4KTC-10.F4Kcompressors for systems with hot gas defrosting orheat dissipation to a cold water system and in low tem-perature applications requires individual consultationwith BITZER.
The use of the 2MTE..6CTE, 4PTC..4CTC,4PTEU..6CTEU compressors with motor version 1 asparallel compressors is possible. However, with regardto the lubrication conditions, the gas suction superheatshould not fall below a minimum value of 10 K. Thepartial load range or the switching to the operation withflash gas bypass is of particular importance for theevaluation of the lubrication conditions. If necessary, aheat exchanger should be used to minimise the refri-
gerant concentration in the oil. Consultation withBITZER is recommended.
The use of compressors with motor version2 as paral-lel compressors requires individual consultation withBITZER.
Filter drier
The solubility of water in gaseous CO2 is much lowerthan in other refrigerants. This means that a relativelysmall amount of moisture can freeze out of the refriger-ant and block or clog the regulation valves, particularlyin low temperature applications. Therefore a gener-ously sized filter drier and a sight glass with moistureindicator for CO2 are necessary. Observe the maximumoperating pressures of the filter driers! The applicationmay possibly be limited to the liquid line after the inter-mediate pressure receiver or the suction side (for sys-tems without intermediate pressure receiver).
4 Mounting
4.1 Vibration dampers
The compressor may be rigidly mounted if there is nodanger of fatigue fractures in the pipeline system con-nected to it. Otherwise the compressor must be moun-ted on vibration dampers.
Mounting the suction gas and discharge gas lines:
Mount compressor on the vibration dampers or ri-gidly. In this position (= operational position), con-nect the suction gas and discharge gas lines andmake sure that they are stress-free. For a selectionof the vibration dampers see table 2, page 5.

5 Line start permanent magnet motor (LSPM)
Compressors equipped with a line start permanentmagnet motor (LSPM) can be identified by the letter "L"added to the type designation (e.g. 6CTEU-50LK or4JTC-10LK). The built-in permanent magnets generatea non-negligible magnetic field which, however, is shiel-ded by the compressor housing.
Fig.9: Warning and prohibition signs on a compressor with perman-ent magnet motor
Safety signs attached to the compressor
WARNINGStrong magnetic field!Keep magnetic and magnetizable objects awayfrom compressor!Persons with cardiac pacemakers, implantedheart defibrillators or metallic implants: maintaina clearance of at least 30 cm!
Work on a compressor with LSPM motor
Any work on the compressor may only be performed bypersons that are not part of the specified group. Main-tenance work beyond the work described in the presentdocument and in the Operating Instructions KB-104may only be performed after consultation with BITZER.
KB-130-7 11
WARNINGInduction, electric voltage!Never operate the motor with the terminal boxopen!
When the rotor rotates, electric voltage is induced inthe terminal pins even with the motor switched off.
Permitted work on a compressor with LSPM motor
Work on the electric supply and screw fixings in the ter-minal box, oil change as well as inspection and re-placement of pressure relief valves, cylinder banks andsight glass. No special tools are needed for this work. Before opening the compressor, thoroughly clean itsenvironment. Pay special attention to loose metalparticles! Do not open the motor cover!
5.1 Overload protection for LSPM motors
The PTC temperature sensor integrated in the stator asa standard protects the LSPM motor from overloadwhen the temperature rises (e. g. in case of prolongedlocked rotor conditions). It is recommended installingan additional overload protective device that reactsmore quickly, since repeated locking conditions woulddamage the magnets. Be sure that it is properly sizedto ensure quick protection against serious electricalfaults below the trigger level of the compressor fuse. For example, an overload relay with adjustable time orthermal overload switch may be selected.
Allowed current values and durations:
Starting: max. 0.5 s (1.25 x LRA)
Operation: max. 2 s (1.25 x max operating cur-rent)
InformationManual reset of compressor protection devicesmust not be changed to automatic reset by us-ing external measures!
6 Commissioning
InformationGeneral information and requirements, see op-erating instructions KB-104.
Prior to putting the system into operation, check allsafety and monitoring devices of the system and in themachine room for correct function.
The following information must also be available:
Construction data.
Maximal admissible pressures at standstill and dur-ing operation.
Pipelines and instruments diagram.
InformationSpecial care is required when commissioningCO2 compressors for transcritical applications.Due to the high solubility of refrigerant in oil, thehigh pressure levels and strong pressure vari-ations after the starting process, overload andlack of lubrication may occur. It is therefore necessary to observe thoroughlythe working behaviour and the operating condi-tions and to switch off the compressor(s) tem-porarily in case of abnormal conditions.Supervise the system during the whole commis-sioning process!
6.1 Evacuation
Switch on the oil heater.
InformationFor applications with CO2, the "standing va-cuum" should reach a value of 0.67mbar(500microns) before the commissioning.During the evacuation process, break the va-cuum several times with dry nitrogen.
6.2 Charging refrigerant
The following chapter describes general requirementswhen filling with refrigerant and the commissioning ofthe compressors. Depending on the version and thecontrol system of the plant (e.g. for systems with inter-mediate pressure receivers or booster), some adapta-tions may be necessary.
DANGERLiquid CO2 evaporates quickly, cools down atthe same time and forms dry ice!Danger of cold burns and frost bites!Avoid uncontrolled deflating of CO2!When filling the system with CO2, wear glovesand goggles!
When extracting CO2 out of a bottle without ascend-ing pipe, use a pressure reducer! In general, alsoafter service work, always break the vacuum withgaseous CO2.
For CO2 bottles with ascending pipe, only extracthigh-pressure liquid! Do not use a pressure reducer! The membranes of the pressure reducers are notcompletely sealed against liquid penetration.
KB-130-712
After filling the system with liquid, remove fillingpipeline or filling hose and make sure that no liquid isenclosed in it any more!
Permitted refrigerant
CO2 of purity class N4.5 or comparable, or H2O
KB-130-7 13
Continue to charge the intermediate pressure re-ceiver of the system with liquid CO2 (the minimum li-quid level in the container should be reached).
!!NOTICEIf the pressure in the intermediate pressure re-ceiver exceeds 30bar, stop charging with refri-gerant!Parametrise the system controller so that theflash gas bypass valve of the first compressoropens!
Further proceeding, see chapter Compressor start, page 13.
6.3 Compressor start
!!NOTICEAvoid strong pressure reduction in the crank-case during the compressor start and during op-eration!Oil foam formation and therefore insufficient lub-rication!
InformationFor 2-stage, cascade or booster systems, firstcommission the medium temperature stage.Start the low temperature stage only after con-stant operating conditions are achieved. Forbooster systems with flash gas bypass andwithout internal heat exchanger for flash gasevaporation, it is recommended adjusting thecommissioning process. An early commission-ing of the low temperature stage can minimizethe influence of liquid portion in the flash gas onthe compressors of the medium temperaturestage.
Before starting the first compressor / evaporator:Choose the right evaporation capacity according tothe compressor performance.
Check the settings of the refrigerated display cabinetcontrollers (especially protective functions like themaximum allowable pressure, etc.).
Open the discharge gas shut-off valve and the suc-tion gas shut-off valve of the CO2 compressor. Inlarge systems with high-capacity evaporators andlong pipes, proceed very carefully and keep the suc-tion gas shut-off valve in throttling position. For smalland medium-sized systems: Switch the compressorto ready-to-operate in the Automatic mode. Switchthe evaporator on and observe the suction gas pres-sure; if needed, decommission the evaporator againand select a lower evaporator capacity for the startonce the suction gas pressure has been reduced.
Switch the compressor on (for parallel circuits, switch on only one compressor first). In large sys-tems, maintain the suction gas shut-off valve in throt-tling position. As soon as the suction pressure de-creases, slowly start opening until it is completelyopen. At the same time, switch on the solenoidvalves of the evaporator, if necessary, in accordancewith the compressor capacity.
If there is not enough refrigerant: Adjust the refriger-ant quantity as needed.
Charge the suction side with gaseous CO2 or the in-termediate pressure receiver with liquid CO2. Avoid astrong increase in pressure.
If the operating limits are exceeded or if abnormalconditions occur (e.g. wet operation), switch thecompressors off immediately.
Only switch on again when the pressure levels arestable or after elimination of a possible fault.
Avoid high cycling rates!
Depending on the system type and control system, connect further compressors and evaporators if ne-cessary. Adjust the refrigerant charge.
Commissioning of the low temperature stage is donethe same way.
Particular measures for cascade systems:
Before starting a compressor, activate the solenoidvalve or the electronic expansion valve to the cas-cade heat exchanger in the medium temperaturesystem. Refrigerant injection on evaporator side ofthe heat exchanger results in CO2 condensation.
For parallel operation:
Commissioning for parallel operation is performed aswith medium temperature applications. However, without the parallel compressors, the maximum per-formance of the system is substantially reduced. Themaximum performance of the system cannot be re-called until the parallel compression stage has beencompletely commissioned.
6.3.1 Checking the operating data
After successful commissioning and charging of refri-gerant, check the operating data and prepare a dataprotocol:
Evaporation temperatures and high pressure seeapplication limits KP-130, KP-132 and KP-133.
Suction gas temperature, discharge gas temperatureand oil temperature, see chapter Operating temper-atures and lubrication conditions, page 14.

7 Operation
When performing work or measurements on the serviceconnection (7/16-20UNF) of the discharge shut-offvalve:
!!NOTICEOn the service connection of the dischargeshut-off valve, pressures up to 160bar may oc-cur!Standard components (e.g. pressure gaugeconnections, hoses etc.) may be damaged ordestroyed.Proceed with care and use only appropriatecomponents for these high pressure levels!
7.1 Operating temperatures and lubrication conditions
!!NOTICEOperation at low pressure ratios and low suctiongas superheat results in low discharge gas andoil temperature.Danger of insufficient lubrication due to the highsolubility of CO2 in oil.Continuous operation with frequencies >60Hzreinforces this effect and should therefore beavoided. If necessary, consultation with BITZERis recom-mended.
With respect to the lubrication conditions, the followingrequirements must be complied with:
Always use a crankcase heater, particularly duringstop phases.
Recommended suction gas superheat 20K if ne-cessary, provide for a heat exchanger in order tominimise the refrigerant concentration in the oil.
A lower suction gas superheat is possible providedthat minimum oil and discharge gas temperaturesare maintained. In direct expansion systems, avoidvalues < 10K!
Oil temperature 30C (20C = absolute minimumvalue!).
Minimum discharge gas temperature = condensingtemperature (tc) + 40K.
For continuous operation, the oil temperature must notfall below 30C and pressure gas temperature notbelow 50C!
InformationThe discharge gas temperature must be de-termined with regard to the peak pressures!Depending on the high and low pressures, veryhigh discharge gas temperatures may occureven when operating with saturated suction gas.
Maximum discharge gas temperature: 140C, meas-ured at the discharge gas pipeline (10cm distancefrom the discharge gas connection of the com-pressor).
The influence of different load conditions and the ap-plication of system technologies such as flash gasbypass on the operation conditions of the com-pressor must be considered and included in the cal-culations. If necessary, contact BITZER.
7.2 Regular checks
Check the system at regular intervals according to na-tional regulations. Check the following points:
Operating data, see chapter Compressor start, page13.
Oil supply, see chapter Compressor start, page 13.
Safety and protection devices and all componentsfor compressor monitoring (check valves, dischargegas temperature sensors, differential oil pressurelimiters, pressure limiters, etc.).
Tight seat of electrical cable connections andscrewed joints.
Screw tightening torques.
Refrigerant charge.
Tightness.
Prepare data protocol.
Replace the pressure relief valves of the com-pressors after deflating because the opening pres-sure may be reduced after this procedure.
Check the sight glass and its joint at regular intervalsand replace them if necessary.
Check the opto-electronic oil monitoring (OLC-K1) atregular intervals and replace it, if necessary.
KB-130-7 15
Check the cylinder banks. Dismount the cylinderhead, check the valve plate and replace it, if neces-sary.
!!NOTICERisk of damage to the compressor.Tighten screws and nuts only to the prescribedtightening torque and, if possible, crosswise inat least 2 steps.Perform a tightness test before commissioning!
7.3 Measures to be taken in case of inadvertent CO2emission
DANGERCO2 is an odourless and colourless gas andcannot be perceived directly in case of emis-sion!Lost of consciousness and danger of suffocationby inhaling higher concentrations!Avoid CO2 emission and uncontrolled deflating, particularly in closed rooms!Aerate closed machine rooms!Make sure that the safety regulations in accord-ance with EN378 are complied with!
DANGERLiquid CO2 evaporates quickly, cools down atthe same time and forms dry ice!Danger of cold burns and frost bites!Avoid uncontrolled deflating of CO2!When filling the system with CO2, wear glovesand goggles!
If uncontrolled CO2 emissions occur, take the followingmeasures:
When gas is emitted, leave the room immediately, warn people and guarantee a sufficient aeration.
Do not enter the zone without a self-containedbreathing apparatus as long as the harmlessness ofthe atmosphere has not been proven.
Stay outdoors on the wind-facing side. Block thearea.
Replace the pressure relief valves of the com-pressors after deflating because the opening pres-sure may be reduced after this procedure.
After the deflating, check the tightness of the safetyvalves and replace them, if necessary.

2.3.1 Allgemeine Sicherheitshinweise

2MTE..2KTE: freigegeben fr 30-75Hz-Betrieb.
4PTC .. 4DTC, 4PTE .. 4DTE, 4PTEU .. 4DTEU: frei-gegeben fr 25-70 Hz-Betrieb.
4CTC, 4CTE, 4CTEU: freigegeben fr 25-65Hz-Be-trieb.
6FTE .. 6CTE, 6FTEU .. 6CTEU: freigegeben fr25-70 Hz-Betrieb.
4PTC-7.F3K..4KTC-10.F4K mit integriertem Fre-quenzumrichter: freigegeben fr 30-87Hz-Betrieb.
Besondere Anwendungen

Auerdem mssen folgende Informationen vorliegen:
Auslegungsdaten.

Weiteres Vorgehen, siehe Kapitel Verdichteranlauf,Seite 28.
6.3 Verdichteranlauf
Einstellungen der Khlmbelregler (v.a.

Generell lsumpfheizung einsetzen, v.a. whrendStillstandsphasen.
Empfohlene Sauggasberhitzung 20K ggf.
In Direktexpansionsanlagen,Werte < 10K vermeiden!
ltemperatur 30C (20C = absoluter Minimalwert!).
Minimale Druckgastemperatur = Verflssigungstem-peratur (tc) + 40K.
Ggf. Rcksprachemit BITZER.
