That’s what we’re doing in this issue focusing exclusively on color! If you’re

flipping through these pages, you must be as excited about it as we are.

We talked to everyone from national paint companies and local designers

to bring you inspirational ideas and helpful tips for incorporating a rainbow

of colors into your home, including which colors work best in certain

rooms, complementary colors that enhance when paired together and, if

you’re afraid to commit to paint, accessories that give your room a hint of

boldness. Orange is my favorite color, so I love Pantone’s 2012 Color of the

Year pick of Tangerine Tango!

Follow along as we explore red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple —

and their many variations. Think of us as your consultants for a new attitude

toward color. We even took our own advice and painted our new office walls

in Sherwin-Williams’ Peppery (SW6615) shown above. It definitely gets the

creative juices flowing.

Red exudes confidence, energy andstrength, while pink represents asense of calmness, romance andfriendship. Red is the color of loveand passion. According to FengShui, a red front door welcomesprosperity to residents. It’s also thesignature color of Frank Lloyd Wright.

Pink, on the other hand, is morefeminine but just as energetic withoutbeing as aggressive. It offers a senseof happiness and the exhilaratingfeeling of being carefree.

Use as an accent color in artwork, accessoriesor on one wall, or if you want to paint anentire room red, consult a professional to

make sure you pick the right shade.

Top Pick: Burnt Red is energetic but also a return to fundamentals.

This color has a strong folkloric flavor that tells us stories of the

community passed through the generations — it’s a color that

invites lively conversation and smiles. A full palette of red, brown and

cream invite proximity to our friends and family. It’s a needed

contrast to our virtual associations with people. The color feels

friendly, substantial, real.

BURNT RED

“Full of passion and drama, red raises your blood pressure and demands your attention, making it a

fabulous choice for those personalities who want some excitement or to live large and experience life

to the fullest. However, red, the color associated with blood and fire, can still exude a sense of warmth

and intimacy when introduced with warmer neutrals to create a cozy, inviting atmosphere you’ll never

want to leave. But stir in a large amount of white to your red (muted pink), and suddenly the drama of

red dissipates into a serene place of romance where calm rules and stress melts away.”

This contemporary kitchen in a Parkville Colonial, designed by Megan Lynch, AKBD, of

Schloegel Design Remodel, benefits from a dramatic reinterpretation of space and style.

From the beginning, her client said she wanted something bold, but when decision time

came, she tried to take the neutral route with color. “I had to push her to take the leap, and

when she saw it, she said it was unbelievable how much she loved it,” Lynch says.

After a remodel left this space without a purpose, the Fairway homeowners

decided to build it out as a library, but not just any ordinary library. Clay

Lyon, CR, of Lyon Construction + Design, lined three of the four walls with

bookshelves and incorporated a fireplace and mantel, daybed and art

wall. The lady of the home, who loves pink, selected three shades of the

hue. That should get those neurons firing.

Affectionately called “the jewel room,” this

small sitting room spices up the entry of an

Overland Park home, featuring Benjamin

Moore’s Peachland with a copper metallic,

custom, hand-painted stencil reminiscent of

the East. Appointed with a luxurious daybed,

leather club chair and ‘directional’ rug atop a

tile floor, it’s an inspired space perfect for

armchair traveling. “[The homeowner] wanted

the room to be more dramatic,” says designer

Rena Shanks of Great House LLC. Done.

Complemented by peaceful blue walls and accompanied

by bomber jacket leather chairs, raw woods and

polished pieces, this fireplace surround anchors a

relaxed, natural family room. “The family was hesitant

about using metallics,” notes Jill Tran, IDS, of Tran +

Thomas Design Studio, “but it’s another case of

something you’re leery of at first turning out to be

your favorite feature.” She also designed the mantel —

or lack thereof — to feature metal art pieces.

such a bold, saturated color on her living

room walls. “I didn’t want a weak yellow,

something that was too close to cream,”

she notes. “The room is big enough to

handle it.” Plus, it holds its own against

Egan’s French antiques and makes a

fabulous backdrop to Susan Tinker’s

brightly painted canvas above the

travertine fireplace surround.

A spring breeze swept through this Overland Park

kitchen remodel designed by Kathleen Ramsey,

Allied ASID, of Ramsey Interiors. Her client was not

afraid to use color and especially loves cool colors.

After finding the Hirsch glass tile for the backsplash,

Ramsey focused in on green for the walls and

matched it to Sherwin-Williams’ Easy Green. It’s

toned down by blue drapes and painted cabinets,

but the fresh, fun feel remains.

Refined for a small space like a bath, Benjamin Moore’s Nantucket

Gray makes a big impact. Designer Jan Burket selected this historical

hue for her Mission Hills client. Documented in the 18th and 19th

centuries but relevant for today’s homes, it complements the tumbled

stone and hardwood floors. The cabinets are painted Deep Creek.

but look closer and you’ll see it’s

for the younger members of the

When Ann Egan, ASID, of Ann Egan

Interior Design, moved to a new home,

she left all her old fabrics behind but

took along her paint color, Benjamin

Moore’s Saratoga Springs. The designer

broke the rule of finding the fabric

before the paint, “but I just loved that

color,” she says. She indeed found fitting

replacements of Fortuny linens that

complete a classical, balanced and

subdued sense of space.

It started with a shirt. Everyone in John

Wolfe’s family liked it, so they took a swatch

into the store and made a custom color

for their mudroom. “It worked well with

the other colors in the house,” says the

homeowner and co-owner of Scovell-Wolfe

& Associates. Specks of the color also can

be found in the granite countertop. The shirt

is long gone, but the color happily greets

the family every time they come in from

the garage.

Top Pick: Mystical Purple is a color full of creativity and energy. It

always feels regal, like it transcends all other colors. There is always

something exotic, mysterious and a little bit wild about it.

Dark purple loves ivy green, while pale lilac partners well with mint.

Bright purple is electric when there are touches of lime green, and

olive green with smoke purple works well for a more retro, antique

look. Antique gold or mango orange paired with a dash of vibrant

purple feels like a spice market or street fair.

The combination of aqua, gray and purple is going

strong in today’s home decor market.

You wouldn’t expect a romance novelist to blandly

tell the story of her home, would you? Filled with

natural daylight, a Leawood author’s sunroom

goes bold in Sherwin-Williams’ Concord Grape.

Visible from the great room, it’s a fun way to draw

people in. Designer Keely Bechtel of Madden-

McFarland Interiors says the darker wall color and

natural light balance each other. “We pulled the

color from the rug,” she says, noting also that

the golden furnishings play

well with the strong color.

Clarence House fabrics

give the space an extra

punchy attitude.

Lavender is tough to get right, says Rena Shanks of Great House LLC.

But that didn’t stop her from using Benjamin Moore’s Central Mauve

in her home office bathroom. In fact, she’d wanted the color badly

since remodeling an intensely purple entry out

of her home’s floor plan. “You have to be

careful because it needs an undertone. The

charcoal tiles bring out the blue-gray side,”

she explains. “You can see the color, but

it’s not distinct.”

66 •• KCHANDG.COM

A purple couch? “Why not?” asks designer Jill

Tran, IDS, of Tran + Thomas Design Studio. “It’s a

cool purple, not girly or royal. It’s calm, chill,

masculine even,” she describes. It finds the middle

ground between the cool gray walls and deep

purple curtains, and it’s balanced by wood tones

in the trim and furnishings. And just like paint, if

you decide you hate the color later, “you can

always reupholster,” Tran says.
