Year in Review

Thank you for an amazing year! In 2011, we accomplished so much. We started off the year with a new logo and we collected staggering amounts of trash and recycling at Great American Cleanup. Redbud Festival had record attendance and our tree programs were hugely successful. For those major milestones and for the many in between, you were there. Take a look at some of this year’s moments!

A word from our Program Manager

Dear KDB Friends and Family,We’re looking forward to sharing a fantastic 2012 with you as we work together to make Denton cleaner, greener, and more beautiful. This year, we celebrate 25 years of service in the community. We’ll also be introducing some new programs (such as a neighborhood grant program), as well as revamping some long-standing programs (like our Adopt-A-Spot Program) to create a better experience for our volunteers. We look forward to another great year in Denton with each of you!

Sincerely,

Aimee BissettProgram Manager, KDB

kdb celebrates 25 years!Together, we make Denton cleaner, greener and more beautiful ... and we have since 1987.

1987 1989 20122006200019981994

City Council signed a resolution creating a Blue Ribbon Citizen’s Task Force for beautification of major city entrances and other city beautification efforts. That task force eventually became Keep Denton Beautiful!

The first ever Great American Cleanup was held this year.

Keep Denton Beautiful resurrected the Denton Redbud Festival. Prior to that, Texas State College held the Redbud Festival, an event they hosted from 1939 to 1981.

Keep Denton Beautiful hosted the first Community Tree Giveaway event.

KDB became a stand-alone nonprofit organization!

The Project Post Oak and Denia WaterSmart gardens were installed. Now, we host regular work days and engage hundreds of volunteers every year in their upkeep.

Armed with a new look and full staff, KDB is looking forward to a great year! We’ll keep you posted; we plan to celebrate this milestone all year long!

Community Partners: Sustainable Denton

Who They Are

The City of Denton created the Department of Environmental Services and Sustainability in May 2010. The plan was to incorporate and facilitate citywide sustainability efforts. The City was able to utilize the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) to help fund this and other sustainability projects.

What They DoCurrently the department is finalizing a community-wide Sustainability Plan to be released this spring. It’s going to be an exciting program ramping up in 2012 that includes the continuation of the Sustainability 101 educational series, a workshop on topics related to sustainability each month. The workshops are free and open to the public.

Get the Dirt on Steve: 10 Cool Things About a KDB Volunteer

1. Steve grew up in Jackson, TN. He ended up in Denton courtesy of the United States Army and an assignment to the United States Army Recruiting Command.

2. He and his family (which includes his wife, Susan and daughter, Syndi) have lived in Denton since 1992.

3. Steve found KDB on the ‘Net and was drawn to our mission.

4. Since then, Steve has played a few different roles, including serving on our Board and adopting TWO Adopt-a-Spot locations!

5. He also maintains our website as the owner and lead designer of Sleepin-Dogs.com Website Designs of Denton.

6. The annual Tree Giveaway is his favorite KDB event. He says, “How cool is it to give free trees to the community? How many other cities do that?”

7. He also loves to do general gardening and landscaping around his home because it clears his mind.

8. Another hobby of Steve’s? Karate! He took it up to help him quit smok-ing in 2009.

9. On litterbugs: “[They] show their true intelligence and lack of respect and discipline when littering.”

10. Finally, Steve tells us: “Take the time to look around Denton and enjoy it. Find your favorite place and take care of it. Leave it in better condition than you found it.”

Wise words, Steve! Thanks for everything!
