Harry took on the role of Secretary and has had many challenges – such as Insurance, a new Constitution and an efficient Be In It Competition. The Working Bee on Saturday, October 13 th . A big thank you to the Members who turned up and helped spread some gravel. Also turning Jacko’s Shed area into a potential gardening exercise. We also had a part tidy-up of the wood store and a general clean up. Also, thanks to Sue Wood who gave the kitchen and the club room a good clean. Congratulations to Kidz Korner Group and the Club Members who assisted with our Stringybark Festival. It was a great event. We all went home weary but very happy with the result. We sold 330 kits and made a lot of children very happy. All I can say is – well done! The next meeting of the Club on November 7 th is a highlight on our calendar when all the toys and gifts that are made, and on display, will be distributed to the appropriate charities. Feel free to come along and see what your Club can do. You need to mark your calendar for December 5, for our BBQ and Auction! Starting at 6pm. President's Report - Rodney Williams
I would like to acknowledge the work ofthe former Executive Committee,Hughie, Albert and Harry - thankingthem for their well-run organisation.

Typical questions about joining the ClubThe many emails/calls we receive enquiring about what is involvedin joining the club. Some usual questions are:- Can we teach? No. we can't, we are not allowed to. But weshare a great lot of experience with fellow members.- Are there female members? Sure are – we have plenty. Age,gender, occupations and team preferences are of no issue with'Woodies'. We're just crazy about wood!2015 count we had 25 fine female members out of the overall 200at the club. We've seen a 50% increase in recent years of femalemembers, when overall growth was 25%. - What age groups come? Well, our Secretary has worked outsome nice statistics on that. 29% are aged 45-65, 43% are 65-85.We have some younger, and older! So there's a wealth ofenthusiasm, and experience here! - How do I find out about what the club is like? Drop in on ameeting night (1st WED of the month 7:15PM) or when the club isopen, We love showing visitors how to become members! ReferNEWSLETTER last page for open times, and links to activities.- How much does it cost Latest Joining fee/membership fees are on website. Presently(2018-19) $100 pa (due 1st Sept), with 50% discount after 1st

Knox “Woodies” SAFETY CORNER
“Keep a Clean Shop!“
Keeping a Clean Shop is oursecond safety tip from theClub’s original Top-10. Weoften read amusing socialmedia stories about howmany times people have lostpencils or tape measures intheir workshops, never to beseen again.
If all our tools had a plannedand visible storage place in aclean and tidy workshop, thenwe would surely not misplacethem so easily.
The point made is that a cluttered workshop will be anunsafe, frustrating and time wasting place to work. Thesefrustrations will always lead to increased personal safetyrisk.
I am reminded ofsafety training Iattended forworkers in ah a z a r d o u schemical plant. Wewere shown aJapanese leanm a n u f a c t u r i n gconcept called 5S.
Each of these five “S” groups are meant to work togetherimproving output, efficiency, worker safety and thereforeincrease both company and worker satisfaction. I think “Setin Order” is most applicable to our Club and is bestexpressed as: “A place for everything and everything in its place”.
I have a post script to last month’s Safety Corner, where Iemphasised the safety message to “Stop and Think”. Weoften see users leaving sawblades set high after leaving thesaw bench for the next user.
For safety reasons, sawblades should be wound downcompletely before leaving the bench. In this way the nextuser is always reminded to reset the blade height to justabove their own workpiece. For this reason, members willnow find my saw bench push shoes have been marked:“To be Used with Sawblade Set Low”. This is not meantto start a debate about the best quality cut, but is all aboutkeeping your fleshy bits and spinning blades as far apart aspossible! … John Freshney

Stringybark Festival OCT 21st – top result!
Sunday 21st October – nice sunny day, lots of visitors, and a topday for selling Kidz Korner kits at Rowville. The short day10AM to 4PM was quite fruitful for the Club,. 330 kits sold, withplenty of members attending to help out. Dick Webb and his bandof Kidz Korner toy builders were delighted with the outcome of theday for sure.

Kidz Korner Kits – Despite lowersales for all wooden items at bothStringybark and in particular at KnoxCommunity Festival, the lads haverallied and have turned into super-sales people looking at other markets. To date a number of saleshave been made at the Club for Joeys/Scouts etc and we havegreat inroads into school holiday activities at both the FerntreeGully and Rowville Libraries. Festivals – Regretfully, when confined to a 3m by 3m tent at theKnox Festival with limited facilities, it was not conducive to whatwe regard as our bumper sales event. It is quite noticeable thatover the last 2/3 years the number of “Community Organisations”has shrunk significantly and it appears that commercial interestshave been accepted as the norm. Late advice from Council thisyear that the Stringybark Festival will be reduced to a Sundayevent only, does not auger well. However, the Committee have re-organised the traditional ticket raffle to an in house operation and itis hoped that the financial impacts will be limited. Council Lease.- A 5 year Community Occupancy has at long lastbeen finalised, however, we are now responsible for electricitycharges. Council are still in the planning stages of their facilityrebuild following the fire 3 years ago when it is envisaged thatseparate electricity meters will be installed. Membership – Whilst numbers have remained steady in the 190’srange it is hoped that the new chums will be inspired to follow thelead of the old grey haired brigade and volunteer their time andtalents to the range of fundraising and charitable events thathappen. Social activities – The 2 major events of the year Christmas inJuly and the Be In It competition were outstanding successes anda great deal of thanks is due to Jeffrey Smart for his hard work.With the better weather it is great to see the number of membersrecently enjoying Al Fresco dining which have boosted thecamaraderie around the place which suggest that indoor bowlingevents will not be too long away. Safety – To some it might be a boring subject but you can restassured that at all Meetings it is a permanent subject on theAgenda to ensure that the Club premises are not only maintainedin a safe condition but that ongoing prompts via the new safetyposter will make members stop look listen and undertake all taskssafely.Projects –This has been a bumper year for many and varied tasksundertaken by members and it would appear that some of thisbusiness has been generated by a combination of word of mouth,our web site and or the installation of the Woody signs installedlast year which now gives us a higher public profile on GlenfernRoad. Newsletters– The high degree of professionalism in thispublication continues to be the envy of many like minded Clubsand the April to October publications which has highlighted specificClub activities has turned them into collector items eg April:KidzKorner, May: Toys and Gifts, June: Rocking Horses, July: Carving,August: Furniture, September: Woodturning, October:Committees.The Future –This aspect of Club life will depend on whethermembers have either a half full or half empty attitude to all issues.Simply put, the greatest majority of Capital improvements havealready been achieved and when the remaining items are finalisedwithin the next few months which is all subject to Council decisionsall that is left is to is enjoy the great facilities with your mates. Sostay positive and things have a habit of eventually working out forthe better.

Life Membership awarded to Dick Webb (2018)
This member joined the Club way back in 2006 andbasically from these early days he has been an invaluableasset to the Club by his many contributions in a wide varietyof activities.
There is insufficient time at this Meeting to list his ongoingmajor contributions to the Club so I won’t bore you withthese details as I suspect his many activities andcontributions are well and truly known to all those memberspresent tonight.
Apart from his woodworking skills which he is more thanwilling to share his knowledge with members he also hasconsiderable expertise in electric circuitry issues along withmechanical operations which has been invaluable to theClub on many occasions.
To put it simply, I wish to nominate that life membership beawarded to Dick Webb in recognition for his tremendouscontributions to the Club over the years.

For those newer members, the Gillinghamaward for Member of the Year commencedin 1991 to honour the late Bill Gillingham(my father) who was a foundation memberway back in 1988.
This award is presented at each AGM to not only honour hismemory, but, as an award to an individual member whocontributes in a special way to the ongoing running of “TheWoodies”
I have been advised that the traditional practice that hasexisted over these years has been followed faithfully whenthe winner of last year’s award in conjunction with ThePresident and Secretary meet to determine the memberthey consider to be a worthy recipient for 2018.
Without giving too much away at this stage I have been toldthat this member joined the Club eleven years ago andsince that time he has constantly put in lots of time andeffort in a variety of roles varying from being a Committeemember to getting his hands well and truly dirty on lots ofdifferent tasks.
He is considered by some members to be a “fountain ofknowledge” on any issue related to wood associated toolsand equipment including the $ costs involved. If by someremote chance he cannot give a member a very detailedanswer straight away that member can be guaranteed thatthe information will be available shortly courtesy of hisexpertise in dealing with Mister Google.
I am delighted to announce that this year’s winner isLINDSAY HORSLEY.

For the information ofnewer/recent members this isthe 6th year of these awards,which was commenced wayback in 2013 by our PastPresident Hurtle Lupton.
They are presented to members as a symbol of the Club’sthanks in recognition of their contributions to the Club andits many and varied activities over the past year. Over thepast 5 years, 44 members have received this award andthis year an additional 7 members will be added to the list.

Apart from their ongoing contributions in making manycricket sets and various children’s board games for ourannual Toy and Gift presentation they have certainly beenbusy elves (or should it be leprechauns) by excellingthemselves with their updated Christmas decorationcomplete with an in built light show. In particular, their newsign wishing all a Happy Christmas from the Woodys drewmany favourable comments from the public and certainlyhelped the community to put a smile on their dial when theydrove along Glenfern Road.

His passion in ensuring that his personalworkshop activities are undertaken in asafe manner has bubbled over into theClub’s activities which has resulted in thepurchase and introduction of a range ofadditional safety related aids. In addition, he has also beeninstrumental in the introduction of a new Safety segment inour Monthly Ingrained Newsletter which ensures that Safetyis kept at forefront of members’ attention along with theintroduction of Safety posters which are fixed in prominentpositions within the Club Rooms.

With the absence of Karen Button throughillness Jeffrey willingly put his hand up totake on a task that many members maytake for granted. In his own words “I will give it a go” and hehas managed the supply of tea/coffee/sugar and notforgetting the pies for the monthly Meetings are always upto scratch. In addition, his management of the manyarrangements required for our in house Christmas in Julyand Be In It functions went without a hitch.

Tuesday is his normal Club daywhen he is not away on 4 wheeldrive activities, but, it is his creativewoody mind and accuracy in detailswhich is an enormous help not onlyto Kidz Korner kit construction andthe many and varied requirements inthe Projects area. His accuracy indetail in all the Club’s activities washighlighted this year with his entry inthe Be In It competition which hemanaged to accurately make allinternal workings by hand including anumber of fly wheels for the Toucanwooden clock which certainly has raised the bar for us allto aspire to.

A Thursday regular who seems toenjoy a challenge with the many andvaried projects he has undertakenprimarily for the annual Toy and Giftpresentations. Whilst he is acompetent woodworker on many itemshis specialties include the constructionand fit-out of many and varied types ofjewellery boxes, but it his accuracyand presentation of baccarat boardsand pieces that leaves many membersastounded to suggest that they are“store bought”. In one of his other volunteer duties he isalways on the look-out for bargains both for the Club ormembers which could be purchased at less than wholesale rates through their Op Shop Department.

For those that know him Peter has awealth of experience in many areasother than woodwork and not long afterhe joined in 2014 he willingly took onthe job when the late Lou Smith whowas the Rocking Horse guru wasexperiencing serious health issues. Ihave no doubt that many members canattest to his knowledge and skills when they have made afamily heirloom. Some members may be aware that Peterhas recently bought a new property in Lakes Entrance andcan no longer undertake the role of Keyholder on a Fridaynight as he is progressively moving his household.However, he still comes to the Club on a Friday when he isin Melbourne and he continues to share his knowledge andexpertise with all on a Friday night.

After about an hour of trying to make it go, theyputted into a nearby marina, thinking someone there maybe able to tell them what was wrong. A thorough topsidecheck revealed everything in perfect working condition. Theengine ran fine, the out-drive went up and down, and thepropeller was the correct size and pitch. So, one of themarina guys jumped in the water to check underneath. Hecame up choking on water, he was laughing so hard. Underthe boat, still strapped securely in place, was the trailer!
