CONTEXTUAL INFORMATION
3.NAIROBI 2.KENYA 1.AFRICA
The “slum” also has a unique history of being home to a population of single women who – historically –
filled the gap of the absent wives for the male population workers whose wives and families stayed back in
the rural areas by design and necessity.
Majengo-Pumwani “slum” was established in the 1920‟s when
the Africans were moved from the Pangani area to facilitate
settlement of the Asian community.
It is located about 2 km east of the city centre and covers an
area measuring 17 ha.
INVENTORY ANALYSIS
challenge opportunity
Poor sanitation evidenced by waste dumping
along drainage channels and Nairobi River.
Inadequate play areas for the community,
inadequate social halls for communal activities
In as much as there exists an extensive informal
market in the settlement, most of the residents
hardly benefit from it.
Provide waste management areas/zones, shift settlements
from river Riparian
Enhance the existing communal areas by providing facilities
necessary for recreation.
Enhance Open air industries “Jua kali’ sector by providing
more space for their activities.
Enhance urban Agriculture at the river riparian that will
enable residents sell the produce to the market.
