Amate House Mission StatementInspired by the social mission of the Catholic church,Amate House supports and develops women and
men rooted in faith, dedicated to service, andcommitted to building a more just and loving society.
Who is Amate House?Founded in 1984 by three seminarians from theArchdiocese of Chicago and lay and Religious men andwomen, Amate House enables young adult lay personsto explore and live out a vocation to service and tobecomemore compassionate and effective leadersin the process. Amate House seeks to support theleadership and faith development of young adults while
providing valuable services to underserved schools andsocial service agencies in the City of Chicago. Youngadult participants (ages 18-29) live together in anintentional community, receive ongoing support,educational opportunities, participate in faith formation
activities and perform either full-time or part-timevolunteer services for one year in inner-city areasthroughout Chicago.Volunteer service programs includeteachers, teacher’s aides, school counseling, legal aid,health care, immigration work, social work/casework,and counseling/support. It is estimated that in2007 more than 57,500 hours of volunteerservices were providedby Amate House.
