    Excellence of alt-Alan-Nab

The Prophet of mankind, the Peace of our heart and mind, theMost Generous and Kind

has stated, Whoeverrecited alt upon me one thousand times in the whole day, hewill not die until he sees his position in Paradise. (At-TarghbWattarb, Vol. 2, pp. 328, ad 22)

Displeasure of the Holy Prophet upon seeing

    phlegm in the Masjid

    Once the Holy Prophet

saw phlegm in al-Masjid-un-Nabaw towards the direction of Qibla andexpressed his displeasure. Upon seeing that, an Anr

aabiyya of the Noble Prophet stood up, cleaned it by scratching the phlegm away and appliedfragrance to that spot. The Noble Prophet

    said

in a happy tone of voice, i.e. What an excellent thingthis woman has done! (Sunan Nas, pp. 126, ad 725)

    and fragrance in the Masjid

    Sayyidun Frq-e-Aam

used to purge Al-Masjidul-Nabaw with fragrant fumes every Friday. (Musnad Ab Yal,Vol. 1, pp. 103, ad 185)

Keep Masjid fragrantThe mother of the believers Sayyidatun isha iddqa has reported, The Holy Prophet

ordered for the construction of Masjid in neighbourhoods and tomaintain them clean and fragrant. (Sunan Ab Dwd, Vol. 1, pp. 197,

    ad 455)

    Air fresheners can cause cancer

Dear Islamic brothers! From this we learnt that keeping theMasjid fragrant with incense sticks, Agarwood, frankincenseetc. is a means of earning reward. However do not light such amatchstick inside the Masjid from which the foul odour ofgunpowder is emitted, because it is Wjib (essential) to protectthe Masjid from foul odours. Incense sticks or frankincense

should be lit outside the Masjid at such a distance that the foulodour of gunpowder does not enter the Masjid, and thenbrought inside. It is necessary to keep the incense sticks insome large tray so that their ash does not fall onto the floor ofthe Masjid. If there is any image of a living being printed onthe packet of incense sticks, then scratch the image. Do not use

air fresheners for perfuming the Masjid (or home, cars etc.)because they produce chemical pollutants in the air that reachthe lungs through breathing, and cause harm. According tomedical research, air fresheners can even cause skin cancer.Where there are established norms of making the Masjidfragrant using the funds of the Masjid, it is permissible to do so,

but where this is not among the norms, raise funds separatelyspecifically for fragrance.

It is arm to enter the Masjid with bad breath

Dear Islamic brothers! Make it your habit to eat less than yourappetite, meaning stop eating whilst you still feel the desire to eat

more. If you keep eating excessively at inappropriate times, consuming foods such as shish kebbs, burgers, pizzas, ice-cream,cold beverages, resulting in disorder of digestive system and,Allah forbid, the disease of bad breath cropped up, it will be asevere trial because it is arm (prohibited) to enter the Masjidwith bad breath, to the extent that when foul smell is emanating

from the mouth it is a sin to even enter the Masjid for offeringcongregational al. Due to lack of interest towards bettering the

afterlife, the vast majority of people are greedy of eating and foodculture is prevalent everywhere you turn, and as a result of thisa large number of people have bad breath. I have experienced itso many times that when somebody brings his mouth closer totalk to me; I have to hold my breath due to his bad breath.Sometimes the Imm and Main also suffer from the illness

of bad breath, in which case they should take leave and begintreatment because entering the Masjid with bad breath isarm. It is sad to say that many people with bad breath even

    become Mutakif in Masjid .

Remember! The ruling of the Shara is that if someone isaffected by the disease of bad breath during Itikf, then he

must suspend his Itikf and leave the Masjid. He shouldperform Qa of Itikf for a day afterwards. The number ofpeople affected by the disease of bad breath increases in themonth of Ramadan-ul-Mubarak, due to the excessiveconsumption of kebbs, samosas and various fried and oilyfoods. An excellent cure to this is to eat simple foods and to

less than the appetite, to keep the digestive system healthy. Moreover, whenever finish eating, make it routine to keep themouth clean by flossing the teeth and rinsing the mouththoroughly, otherwise the particles of food will become stuckin the gaps between the teeth, begin to decay producing a foulsmell. It is Wjib to protect the Masjid from every type of foul

    smell, not just bad breath.

alis Makrwhen there is bad breathOn page 384, Vol. 7 of Fatw Razawiyya, it is stated:Offering al (even at home) with bad breath is Makr andvisiting the Masjid in such a state is arm until the mouth iscleaned. It is also arm to cause distress to other Musallis, and even if there are no other Musallis, even then the angels

are still distressed by the foul smell. It is stated in a ad, Theangels also feel distress from the things which cause distress tothe human beings. (a Muslim, pp. 282, ad 564)

Prohibition of entering Masjid having applied foul-

smelling ointmentImm of the Al-us-Sunna, Mujaddid of the Umma, MaulnAsh-Sh Imm Amad Raz Khn has stated,Whoever has a foul smell emanating from his body such that

other Musallis are distressed by it, for example, one whohas bad breath or foul armpits, or the one who has applied

sulphur (or any foul smelling ointment or lotion) over his bodyfor treating itching, should be prevented from entering theMasjid. (Fatw Razawiyya (Jadd), Vol. 8, pp. 72)

Eating raw onion also causes bad breath

Having eaten raw radish, raw onion, raw garlic and anything

else that produces disgusting odour, it is not permissible toenter the Masjid as long as that odour remains in the mouth,

on the hands, or anywhere else, because the angels aredistressed by this. It is narrated in a ad that the BelovedProphet

said, He who has eaten onion, garlicor leek should never approach our Masjid. (a Muslim, pp.282, ad 564)

    Furthermore, he

said, If still wants to eat

(such things), kill its odour by cooking. (Sunan Ab Dwd, Vol. 3,pp. 506, ad 3827)

Do not take raw meat into the Masjid

Sadr ush Shara, Badr-ut-Tarqa, Allma, Mufti Muammad

Amjad Al Aam has stated, Eating uncookedgarlic and onion in the Masjid or before going to the Masjid isnot permissible for as long as the foul odour exists. This rulingapplies on everything that has a foul odour, for example leek, radish, uncooked meat, kerosene oil, a match stick thatproduces a foul odour when struck, releasing wind, etc.

Anyone who has the disease of bad breath, anyone who has afoul smelling wound, or anyone who has applied a foulsmelling ointment is not permitted to enter the Masjid untilthe odour vanishes.(Bar-e Sharat, Vol. 1, pp. 648)

There is no harm in taking raw meat or any similar pure thinginto the Masjid if it is packaged in such a way that even slightest

    foul smell cannot emanate outside.

Avoid sliced raw onion & the food containing

    uncooked onion

Avoid eating chickpeas, yogurt paste, salad etc. containinguncooked onion; also avoid pickle and sauces containing rawgarlic during the timings of al. Sometimes the odour ofuncooked onion and garlic is felt in Kebbs and samosas so donot eat these before al either. It is also not permissible tobring such odorous things into the Masjid.

    Lighting incense sticks in gatherings

With the intention of acting upon the Sunna of spreading

fragrance amongst gatherings of the Muslims, it is a means ofreward to light incense sticks. In the case that anyone is causeddistress by the fumes of the incense or frankincense, then in thissituation the fragrance should not be lit. Similarly, refrain fromsprinkling large amounts of fragranced water over gatherings, because generally this causes trouble and disturbance to people.

Prohibition of attending gatherings of Muslims with

    bad breath

Muft Amad Yr Khn has stated, Do not go toany congregation of Muslims, any gathering of Dars e Quranor in the court of Islamic scholars or saints with bad breath. He further stated, As long as the bad breath isemanating, stay at home. Do not go into any procession or

gathering of Muslims. Those who smoke hookah, and those whoeat Pn (Betel leaf) containing tobacco and do not rinse theirmouths afterwards should pay heed. Islamic Jurists have stated: Whoever has the disease of bad breath is exemptedfrom attending the Masjid. (Mir-ul Manj, Vol. 6, pp. 25-26)

Is it permissible to eat raw onion during the timings

    of al?

Question:A person suffering from bad breath is exempted fromattending the Masjid, so can someone eat yogurt paste withuncooked onion, or sliced onion, or kebbs or samosas which

contain onion/garlic which has not been cooked fully and thusemit foul odour, or rolled maize bread that contains uncookedgarlic, or any other similar food, just before the Jamat with theintention that the breath will carry foul odour after eating theseand then Jama`at will no longer be Wjib?

Answer:This is not permissible to do so. For example, where

the Jamat of Isha takes place in its initial time, do not eat anysalad which contains uncooked radish, onion or garlic afteralt-ul-Maghrib because then it will be difficult to clean themouth and get to the Masjid that quickly. However, if it ispossible to clean the mouth quickly, or someone is exemptedfrom going to Masjid for some reason (for example, women),

or if there is still enough time until al and by that time theodour will finish, then there is no harm in eating it. Al arat

Imm Amad Raz Khn has stated, Eatinguncooked garlic and onion is without doubt all but as long astheir odour remains in the mouth after eating them, visiting theMasjid is prohibited. However, a potent hookah, lacking proper

filtration, that causes a lasting foul odour , such that thesmoker cannot rinse away that odour completely before the time

of Jamat, is impermissible to smoke close to Jama`at timeaccording to Shara, as this would become the cause for losingthe Jamat and Sajda, or otherwise for entering the Masjidwith bad breath, and these both things are impermissible andunlawful. It is a principle of Shara that every act which isMub-f-Nafs (something that is permissible inherently)

but that leads towards impermissible things is impermissibleand undesirable. (Fatw Razawiyya (Jadd), Vol. 25, pp. 94)

Do not recite when eating raw onionOn page 506 of Fatw Fai-ur-Rasl, Vol. 2, it is stated, It is

    Makru to recite

when smoking a hookah, a cigar or a

cigarette, when eating things like raw garlic and onion, and atplaces of impurity. (Fatw Fai-ur Rasl, Vol. 2, pp. 506)

    Method of discovering bad breath

If there is any foul smell in the mouth it is necessary to cleanthe mouth using Miswk and to rinse it as many times as ittakes to remove the foul odour completely, and there is no

limit for this. Those who smoke potent unfiltered foul smellinghookah should be very careful regarding this, and cigarettesmokers should be even more careful because the foul odour ofcigarettes is even more intense and lasting, and above all, thosewho eat tobacco directly need to be the most careful among all;because the actual remains of tobacco and not just the smoke,

deposit in their mouth, and permeates foul smell deeply. All ofthe above people must perform Miswk and rinse the mouthwith water until the mouth is completely cleaned and there isno trace of that odour left at all. The way to check the presenceof bad breath is to hold the palm close to the mouth, open themouth, and breathe out fully from the throat onto it three times,

and then smell it immediately. Without this method, one cannotperceive the internal bad odour of the mouth easily. When foulsmell is emanating from the mouth, going to the Masjid is

arm and entering the alis impermissible. . (FatwRazawiyya (Jadd), Vol. 1, pp. 623)

Cure for bad breathIf the bad breath is because of something that has been eaten, then chew and eat fresh coriander leaves and try to use dry or

fresh rose petals to clean the teeth - , this will bebeneficial. If the bad breath is due to some digestive problem, then gain the blessings out of hunger by eating less than

    appetite,

eating less will help in getting rid of painof the legs and other different parts of the body, constipation,

heartburn, ulcers in the mouth, frequent cough and cold, throat ache, bleeding gums, and many other diseases as well asbad breath. Eating less such that some hunger is still thereprevents 80% of the diseases. (For detailed information, read thechapter Excellence of Hunger from Faizn-e-Sunnat). physical diseases will automatically be cured.Raza nafs dushman hai, dam mein na aana

    Madan cure for bad breath

Recite the above mentioned alt-Alan-Nab 11 times in asingle breath from time to time, bad breath will die out. Thebest way of reciting in a single breath is to close the mouth, andstart inhaling from the nostrils slowly and fill the lungs with as

much air as possible. Now start reciting alt Alan Nab. Bypracticing for a few times like this

you will be ableto recite alt-Alan-Nab 11 times before running out ofbreath. According to the above method, inhaling through thenostrils slowly, holding a deep breath for as long as possibleand then exhaling it from the mouth is extremely beneficial for

health. Throughout the day, whenever you get chance, andpreferably in the open air, you should ensure that you take

some deep breaths according to this method a few times everyday. I, Sag-e-Madina (the author), was once told by an elderlyphysician, After taking a breath, I hold my breath inside forhalf an hour (or he said: two hours) and during this period Ican recite my litanies and invocations. According to him, suchoutstanding breath holding experts exist in the world that

inhale breath in the morning and exhale it in the evening.

How far should the toilets be made from Masjid?

Imm Amad Raz Khn was asked, How farshould the toilets be from the Masjid? He replied, Protecting Masjid from bad smells is Wjib. Therefore, burning kerosene oil and lighting a matchstick inthe Masjid is arm (as it causes bad smell). It has beenmentioned in a ad, It is not permissible to bringuncooked meat into the Masjid, (Sunan Ibn Mjah, Vol. 1, pp.413, ad 748) though the smell of uncooked meat is very

slight. Therefore, making toilets at such a place from wheresmell could reach the Masjid will be prohibited. (FatwRazawiyya (Jadd), Vol. 16, pp. 232)

When uncooked meat with slight bad smell is not permissiblethen uncooked fish will definitely be prohibited because of itsstrong smell. Occasionally, the hand and the mouth become

smelly while eating it because of the carelessness of the cooks. In such a condition, do not go to the Masjid unless the smell

is removed. When toilets are being cleaned, bad smells spreada lot. Therefore, it is necessary to keep an appropriatedistance (between the Masjid and washrooms) to prevent badsmells from entering the Masjid even at the time of cleaning. If the door of the washroom opens into the precincts of theMasjid, a partition wall may be erected there and entrance to

washrooms may be made from outside the Masjid to protectit from bad smells.

Develop a habit of checking your clothing etc.

Bringing bad smells into the Masjid is arm. Furthermore,

entrance of the person having bad smell is also arm. Donot use a toothpick inside the Masjid as those who are not inthe habit of picking their teeth after every meal have a badsmell in the mouth. A Mutakif should pick his teeth at sucha distance in Fin-e-Masjid that the smell does not enter theactual Masjid. Person having smelly wound or the patients

with a stool-bag or a urine-bag should not enter the Masjid.Similarly, the bottle of blood or urine taken for a laboratorytest and clothes covered in blood ejected during slaughteringof animals cannot be brought in the Masjid even if they arewrapped. Islamic Jurists have declared that bringingimpurity in the Masjid is not allowed even if it does not

contaminate the Masjid. Likewise, if theres impurity on apersons body, he is not allowed to enter the Masjid. (Rad-dul-

Mutr, Vol. 1, pp. 614)It is also not permissible to take urine orblood inside the Masjid. (Durr-e-Mukhtr, Vol. 1, pp. 614)

If a person has pure unpleasant smell that does not spread(for example sweat) he is allowed to enter the Masjid becausesuch smell is hidden underneath the clothing. Similarly, if a

handkerchief smells bad, do not take it out from the pocket. Ifa bad smell spreads due to removing the turban or cap, donot remove them inside the Masjid. Similarly, if uncookedmeat or fish is packed in such a manner that no bad smellspreads then it is permissible to bring it inside the Masjid.

Giving an example of this, Muft Amad Yr Khn has stated, However, if the bad smell of kerosene oil isremoved in any way, or the oil is filled in the lamp in such amanner that bad smell does not spread, then it is permissibleto bring it (inside the Masjid). (Fatw Namiyya, pp. 65)

Every Muslim should take care that his face, body, handkerchief,

dress and footwear etc. are not smelly. Do not come to theMasjid in such a dirty dress that causes disgust to others.Regretfully, fine and expensive dresses are worn on the occasionof meetings with worldly officers but no care is observed aboutcleanliness while going to the court of our Beloved Allah .Before coming to the Masjid one should wear at least such

decent dress which he wears on the occasion of ceremonies;but the dress should be according to Shara and Sunna.

Prohibition ofbringing children into MasjidThe Beloved and Blessed Prophet

said, Savethe Masjid from children and the insane and trading andquarrels and raising voice and implementing the punishmentand drawing swords. (Sunan Ibn Mja, Vol. 1, pp. 415, ad 750)

It is arm to bring such a child into the Masjid that bearsthe risk of making the Masjids floor impure (e.g. byurinating etc.). Bringing an insane person into the Masjid isalso arm. If there is no fear of impurity then it is Makr.People who take their slippers into the Masjid should cleanoff any impurity beforehand. Walking into the Masjidwearing shoes is the disrespect of the Masjid. (Rad-dul-Mutr,Vol. 2, pp. 518)

By Shara, it not allowed to bring small children, theinsane (or an unconscious person or the one captured by ajinn) into the Masjid even for spiritual remedies. A baby

cannot be brought into the Masjid even if it is wrappedproperly into a piece of clothing etc. If you have evercommitted the mistake of bringing such children into theMasjid, repent instantly and make a firm intention of notdoing it again. However, it is permissible to bring childreninto Fin-e-Masjid (for example, the Imms room)

provided one does not have to pass through the actual partof the Masjid.

Butchers and fishmongersAs the clothes of butchers and fish mongers smell extremelybad, they should have a proper bath, put on a clean dressand apply fragrance before coming to the Masjid. Bathingand applying fragrance is not a condition; rather its just asuggestion. The thing is: one has to remove the bad smellcompletely.

Bad smell develops in mouth during sleeping

The foul air in the abdomen rises up during sleep, therefore themouth often carries foul odour upon waking. In this regard, a

question and its answer from Fatw Razawiyya, Vol. 23,Page 375 is presented:

Question:How is it to recite yat-ul Kursupon waking? Manyteachers teach Quran Sharf to the Students whilst smokinghookah.

Answer: It is recommended to wash the hands and rinse the

mouth after waking, and then to recite yat-ul-Kurs. If themouth smells of hookah or any food or drink, rinse itthoroughly before starting recitation of the Holy Quran. As faras the teachers who do this (the act described in the question),they are guilty of a wrong action. The holy personality of theProphet of mankind, the Peace of our heart and mind, the Most

Generous and Kind was ever fragrant andaromatic, and his blessed nature was exceptionally elegant and

refined. A Miswk would always remain next to his pillow whensleeping, and he

would use Miswk first of allupon waking.

Therefore, it is Sunna to keep a Miswk next to the pillow and

to use it upon waking . Whenever he woke up fromsleep, the Beloved Prophet

would use Miswk.(Sunan Ab Dwd, Vol. 1, pp. 54, ad 57)

Bad smelling sweat due to some foods

Some foods cause bad smelling sweat. Such people shouldsubstitute their food.

    Method of cleaning the mouth

Those who do not act upon the Sunna of using Miswkand picking their teeth and do not clean their teeth properlydue to laziness, most of such people have the problem of

bad breath. Just using a Miswk or a toothpick carelessly asa formality is not enough, instead, each and every tiny bit offood is to be removed from teeth taking care not to hurt thegums, otherwise, these food crumbs will rot, causing badsmell. There is another way of cleaning the teeth. After havingany food and tea or when you are working while sitting, take a

mouthful of water and keep moving it inside the mouth. This will clean the teeth. Normal water can also be used, but

tepid and rather salty water will serve as an excellentmouthwash .

Save the beard from bad smell

Tiny food crumbs often get stuck in the beard, andsometimes, bad smelling saliva also creeps into the beard, causing smell in it. Its a Madan suggestion that the beardbe washed with soap from time to time. The Beloved

    Prophet

has said, He who has hair shouldrevere it. (Sunan Ab Dwd, Vol. 4, pp. 103, ad 4163) Meaning,he should wash, oil and comb it. (Ashat-ul-Lamt, Vol. 3, pp. 617)

An easy way to make fragrant oil

Sometimes, bad smell spreads in the air when someoneusing mustard oil in hair removes his cap or turban. Therefore, if possible, try to use good quality fragrant oil.An easy way of making fragrant oil is to put a few drops ofyour favourite fragrance in the coconut oil bottle, and shakeit properly (particular essence for making the fragrant oil

can also be bought from perfume shops). Wash your hairwith soap on a regular basis.

Bathe daily, ifpossibleIf possible, take a bath on a daily basis because it willremove external bad smell a great deal and this is alsobeneficial to health (but Mutakifn should avoid using thebathrooms of the Masjid unless it is necessary because theremight be a water shortage for Wu and the water motormay also rundown, if used repeatedly. Moreover, bathewhen the washrooms are in Fin-e Masjid, and if they areoutside the Masjid premises then it is not even permissibleto perform the Friday Ghusl; only the FarGhusl is permitted).

Method ofprotecting the turban from bad smellSome Islamic brothers are very keen to wear a large sizedturban but they do not keep it clean and, sometimes, itunintentionally becomes a cause of spreading bad smell inthe Masjid. Therefore, its a Madan request that the Islamic

brothers using a turban, a head cloth (used underneath aturban) or a shawl should wash them once a week or morefrequently depending upon the weather, otherwise theysmell bad due to dirt, sweat and oil. Although one does notnotice the smell himself, others may feel disgusted. Thereason why one does not himself notice the smell is that he

    has become used to it.

Which type ofturban should be worn?Using the turban which is already tied on a hard cap canalso cause bad smell. If possible, use a thin, soft and light-fabric turban and wear the cap which adheres to the head, aswearing this type of cap is also Sunna. Instead of wearingand taking off the already tied turban, tie one fold afteranother according to Sunna and unfold it in the same manner.

By doing so, according to a ad, one will be given thereward of one good deed and one Nr for each fold andwhen unfolding (when there is an intention of tying itagain) one sin will be forgiven. (Kanz-ul-Umml, Vol. 15, pp. 132-

133, ad 41126, 41138) , there will be no bad smellin the turban because of having air frequently. Bad smell ofsweat can also be removed by putting the turban, head cloth, shawl, dress etc. under sunlight. Using fragrance with goodintentions can also remove bad smells. Intentions of applyingfragrance and instances for its use are being presented.

The more good intentions you make, the more reward you willgain. However, this applies when the occasion for that intentionexists and the intention is permissible according to Shara. Ifyou dont remember a lot, you should make at least two orthree intentions.

foul odour into the Masjid and pledge that we will never bringany type of foul odour into the Masjid ever again.

O Allah ! Bestow us with the virtue of keeping the Masjidfragrant. O Allah give us the ability to purify ourselvesfrom every type of internal and external foul odour before

entering the Masjid. O Allah ! For the sake of our FragrantProphet

, save us from the stench of sins andgrant us the fragrant neighbourhood of Your Most Beloved
