Operating in seven Manitoba communities, this programoffers physicians in rural and northern Manitoba a monthlyon-site or videoconference CPD session. In order to address the unique clinical characteristics of each community, this program requires a community physician to act as “chair”. These physicians identify the learning needs of their colleagues and work with the CPD office staff to organize CPD events.

The Community-Based Program is supported by anunrestricted education grant from the Office of Rural andNorthern Health.

Our Friday@Noon program is designed to provide timely, accessible continuing professional development to Manitoba’s health professionals. Facilitators provide an evidence-based review and time for discussion. The program takes place one Friday per month from 12:00 to 13:00 hours as a multi-site videoconference to over 50 locations through the MBTelehealth Network. The sessions are also web archived to allow retrieval by health professionals at their convenience.

This year the Friday@Noon series will focus on new therapeutic agents. When new therapeutic agents are launched, it is often challenging for prescribers to determine how new agents should be used and how they might compare to ones with proven track records. Each 1-hour session will provide unbiased, in-depth and timely information on a new therapeutic agent. Sessions will be facilitated by a pharmacist and expert clinicians.

This program is available at no additional cost for annualregistrants of the Bannatyne Campus or Community-BasedCPD programs. Registrants for the Friday@Noon must haveaccess to MB Telehealth and agree to operate the on-sitevideoconference equipment.

LOCATIONS: The program is available at MBTelehealth locations throughout Manitoba. Please visit the MBTelehealth website (www.mbtelehealth.ca/locations.html) to locate the most convenient site for you.

Associate Dean’s Message

Many of you will have noticed that the Office of Continuing Medical Education (CME) has been renamed the “Division of Continuing Professional Development”. This was done to reflect the diversity of activities of our unit: continuing education programming, physician assessment services, IMG training, programming for the general public, as well as new initiatives with the Faculty of Dentistry. The name change also signals our desire to move continuing education beyond the didactic; embracing concepts of self-directed learning and personal development while considering organizational and system factors.

With over 5,000 registrations in over 125 sessions last year, the Division of CPD provides a variety of offerings and options. These offerings aim to accurately reflect and support the professional reality of family physicians’ lives. To that end, we are developing educational events addressing a wide array of topics, increasing opportunities for self-directed learning and reflection on practice, and making our professional development offerings more accessible through videoconferencing and web casting.

With the arrival of mandatory continuing professional development, many of you are seeking out locally developed CPD activities. To facilitate your search, the Division of CPD has implemented a new event management system, EvMS. Its listing will allow you to quickly find and register for events being organized by the Division of CPD or by Departments of the Faculty of Medicine. To keep you informed, we also invite you to sign up via our website, for our quarterly e-newsletter or follow us on Facebook or Twitter.
