Electronic Medical Records
Last Update: January 11, 2013
Electronic Medical Records Background:
Beginning January 2011 the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS), and other governing bodies have published concerns related to the increased documentation and billing related to the use of the Electronic Health and Medical Records. These concerns have included the improper use of ‘copy paste’ functions and other concerns.
The Compliance Department has collaborated with physicians and EMR implementation staff to create the attached EMR guide which was developed to describe potential risk that may arise when implementing an EMR, and to provide recommendations to mitigate those risks.
This document includes best practices as outlined by professional associates and CMS and the health care community.
This guide is not meant to detail all risk areas or solutions, but to serve as a resource in addition to external publications.
