Purpose of the session

To introduce the idea of e-Profiles as a means to:● developing the skills of a reflective learner and support independent

learning ● contributing to the development of e-mature learners● providing support for guidance activities● creating a whole-school strategy, providing easy access for all pupils

to record and review progress.

During the session participants will:● have the opportunity to look at and explore the proposed new

electronic e-Profile● explore the ways to adapt the system to the needs of our school● have considered issues of progression from Early Years to Post-16.

What do we want to achieve?

● To encourage practitioners to find ways of evaluating the impact of personal development learning on students’ thinking and action, linked to the five outcomes of Every child matters – that all children and young people:

– be healthy

– stay safe

– enjoy and achieve

– make a positive contribution

– achieve economic well-being.

● To create a replacement for the Progress File that reflects the move to helping students to develop as e-mature learners.

Expectations for pupils

● Pupils should talk and write about their opinions and explain their views.

● An e-Profile helps pupils to recognise and value what they have learned, know how they are progressing and set targets for the future.

● Self and peer assessment:

– is first hand

– expects pupils to take more responsibility for their learning

– helps increase motivation

– makes a positive impact on achievement.

Pupils as reflective learners – maintaining a record of achievement and involvement

It is used to:

● collect evidence for a presentation about their learning

● involve pupils in taking responsibility for their own learning – targets and planning

● provide a record as a transition tool between classes or schools

● provide a pupil perception of the impact of the PDL programme.

What is the purpose of creating an e-Profile?

What ideas are there to guide our thinking?

● SEAL (social and emotional aspects of learning) – providing a primary focus.

● Personal, learning and thinking skills – a QCA secondary focus.

● The ICT curriculum requirements – to teach the use of PowerPoint (PPT).

Also …

● The move, nationally, to improve Assessment for Learning.

Social and emotional aspects of learning

SEAL offers a whole-curriculum framework for teaching social, emotional and behavioural skills to all children and is organised into seven themes, which can be covered within a school year:

● new beginnings

● getting on and falling out

● say “no” to bullying

● going for goals!

● good to be me

● relationships

● changes.

A framework of personal, learning and thinking skills

The framework comprises six groups of skills that are essential to success in learning, life and work. The titles of the six groups of skills are set out below and it is these skills that will enable young people to enter work and adult life confident and capable:

● self-managers

● creative thinkers

● independent enquirers

● reflective learners

● team workers

● effective participators.

As reflective learners

Young people:

● assess themselves

● set goals

● review progress

● invite feedback

● evaluate experiences and learning

● communicate their learning for different audiences.

So how is a PPT e-Profile going to help?

It is:

● a basis for reflecting on and reviewing learning and action planning

● a means of holding and accessing personal information

● a means of presenting oneself and one’s skills, qualities and achievements to others

● a means of collecting and selecting assessment evidence, including examples of coursework, results and achievements

● a guidance tool to support review, choice and transition.

Things to be considered

● Purpose: Who is it for? What is it for? What do we want it to do?

● Support and guidance: Does it support overall learner development, such as that encountered in PDL?

● Protocols on managing information: Issues of confidentiality of information.

● Functionality: How are the PPT functions used to best effect?

● Form and feel: How does the process look and feel in use? What do its outputs look like?

Page 16: Keeping track of learning through review, target setting and action planning e-Profiles – supporting personal development learning and information, advice.

Summary of outputs

The process:

● focuses on and promotes the needs and interests of learners

● takes account of learners’ diverse purposes in learning

● encourages learners to reflect on and recognise their own progress and achievement, to increase their confidence

● promotes and supports learner self-assessment, peer assessment and dialogue about learning and achievement between learners and tutors/mentors

● enables both the achievement of planned learning objectives and learning outcomes not specified at the outset to be recognised and valued.

Getting started – Storyboarding

This is an example of a storyboard that pupils design about the things they want to include in their e-Profile PowerPoint.
