A word about sandbags: don’t!Floodwater entering buildings orsoaked into sandbags is classifiedas black water – in other words, contaminated with anything fromrats’ urine to sewage.

It is potentially dangerous andcan contain more than 120 viralinfections and hundreds ofbacterial infections. Sandbagsalmost invariably seep floodwaterand will allow black water, and itshealth risks, into your building.

If you do use them, after floodingsubsides you will need to disinfectaffected areas thoroughly anddispose of the sandbags securely. It is much safer and more hygienicto use cleanable, reusable,leak-resistant barriers suchas Floodguards.

“The workmen were very kindletting me know when to expectthem. They cleaned everything upand explained how to use theFloodguard.”

1 Future Flooding, UK Government reportRoyal Institute of Chartered Surveyors2

Over 5 million people in more than twomillion homes are at risk of flooding inthe UK, with 1.6 million at high risk1.Some eight per cent of the total landmass of the country – 10,000 squarekilometres - is affected by riverflooding alone.2

For people living and working inflood zones, it is not a matter of iftheir homes and businesses will beaffected by flooding but when. It isa constant worry.

Each year, the problem of floodingbecomes more serious. By the 2080s,the number of people at high risk willhave risen to somewhere between2.3 and 3.6 million. Today’s 517,000 indanger of short-term urban floodingwill have risen to between 1 and 2million.1

Government flood protection schemesare playing their part in reducing thedevastating effects of flooding. But the£1billion committed by 2010 on floodmanagement is still dwarfed by thecost of flood damage, which was morethan £4 billion in 2007.

Beyond measureIn some parts of the country, thismeans that flood insurance is eitherimpossible to find or too expensive toafford. More councils, businesses andhouseholders are faced with policyexcesses that make their insuranceall but useless.

The ABI has announced that some517,000 homes are now uninsurablefrom 1st Jan 2008, those categorisedas ‘high risk’ from fluvial flooding, withthis figure expected to rise to 1millionwhen the combined map includingpluvial flooding is released.

Other effects of flooding cannot bemeasured. Family heirlooms andsentimental items have a valuebeyond money. Being forced outof your house for months whilerepairs are being made takes its toll.Seeing your business destroyedis heartbreaking!

But, as thousands of home owners, companies, local authorities andgovernment departments havediscovered, installing Floodguardsor Rapidam barriers can protect you.

A Floodguards system can be putin place in a matter of minutes andonce the danger has passed, it can bedecontaninated & disassembled justas easily and neatly stored away, ready for the next use.

Our domestic products stop watergetting in through doors, windows, vents and other entry points. Forlarger, commercial premises, thecomplete area surrounding a buildingcan be protected.

In either case, you are protected bythe most effective flood protectionsystems available today – and ata very reasonable cost.

The tiny Finchingfield Brook inEssex has turned into a ragingtorrent four times – three ofwhich caused huge destructionto the home of Gill and PeterFairhead (pictured here).

“The last deluge was 10 daysafter we installed Floodguards,”says Mrs Fairhead. “The waterwas 18 inches deep outside –but it was dry inside. For peace ofmind alone, Floodguards are worththe investment. We now sleep atnight. Thoroughly recommended.”

A flood warning can come less than anhour from a deluge – and it takes justone flood to wipe out a lifetime ofmemories. A single flood can make ahome, office or shop uninhabitable forweeks and can make insurancepremiums rocket.

It takes about 30 seconds to clip on aFloodguard and about five minutes toprotect an average house with threeentrances and half a dozen air vents.

The speed of Floodguard protectionis a direct result of both its unique,globally-patented design and the factthat all installations are bespoke. We assess your property to find outexactly what flood protection you need.

Our professional installers will take aday or two to fit the system in astandard property, depending on yourexact circumstances. All you’ll see whenwe leave are unobtrusive frames sealedto your building around entrances andairbricks. As well as standard grey,

brown, brick red and white, we cancustom make the frames in virtually anycolour you want.

Once you have clipped on a Floodguard, the more the water rises, the tighter theseal becomes – one of the reasons whywe were one of the first companies inthe world to be granted the BritishStandards Institute Kitemark of confor-mance 1188-1. In essence, a Flood-guard works like an arch dam underpressure and continues working, regardless of whether the water is still, flowing or creating waves.

Floodguards are tested with waterapproximately a metre deep – holdingback a tonne of pressure – and aredesigned to cope with twice that. HigherFloodguards can be commissioned, subject to an assessment. Once thedanger has past, simply unclip theFloodguards, wash them down and putthem in a Floodguards storage shed.

Floodguard was the winner of the 2000Business Britain award for innovation.

Mrs LowerCollingtree, Northampton.

We moved to our Collingtree home in1996. The property was a largenewly-built bungalow with a small brookin the back garden, however there wasserious consideration of the flood risk.

In April 1998, 16 months after movinginto our home, with no warning weexperienced our first flood. The waterrose to about 2 feet against the buildingfrom 9pm to early the following morning. For several hours we ran around likeheadless chickens not really knowingwhat to do. We tried to use towels andduvets to dam the doors but to no avail, the house filled with flood water. Whenwe finally gave up and evacuated we hadto wade through floodwater more than afoot deeep to reach safe ground.

The aftermarth was terrible and I cried fordays. There was so much to do in such ashort space of time; packing for

alternative accommodation, puttinggoods into storage and also preparingfor our holiday. We stayed in a temporaryhome 8 miles away for 5 months andsuffered massive inconvenienece havingto travel home everyday. The insuranceclaim to cover building repairs andcontents was in the order of £113,500.

After moving back home in August 1998we experienced more scares despite theEnviroment Agency saying it was unlikelyto happen again. In 2004 some researchinto products led us to purchaseFloodguards for all the doors andairbricks.

The company and it’s installation teamprovided excellent service although Idoubted they would make muchdifference. The guards typically take 10minutes to retrieve from the shed andput in place and this was really put to thetest when my husband woke me to saythat the guards would need to bedeployed at 3am one night of June 2007;what is more we could not find the torch!

As the water crept closer I wasre-assured when a fireman said wewould be alright because we hadfloodguards and that is exactly whathappened. It was apocalyptic outsidewith neighbours desperately trying tosave their homes and possessionswhilst we were perfectly alright. Afterhaving deployed our own guards, wefirstly helped neighbours who also hadfloodguards installed and then finallyassisted unprotected neighbours someof whom had spent over 12 hours tryingto build there own barriers.

The common feature to the previousflood was that we again had no proirwarning. What was different was thesense of protection and peace of mindwe experienced plus of course our homeremained as dry as did our otherFloodguard protected neighbours. Iwould also now be prepared to evacuatemy home to safey within a very shorttime knowing that I have done the best Ican do to protect my home.

Flood Guards Systems Limited | 9North America 972 443 9873Floodguards also has the ability to manufacture any bespoke size guard to suit almost any size opening on a property. Forexample, Floodguards has manufactured guards as large as 910mm high x 4700mm wide for a specific contract requirement.

A single flood can disrupt your work forweeks or months and severelyundermine your business reputation.Yourinsurance premiums or excesses can besent through the roof. A flood can ruinyour business.

Tens of thousands of commercialpremises are in flood-prone areas of theUK and, until recently, the mainprotection that business owners had torely on was sandbags and manpower –often too little, too late.

Now, the patented, BSI-approvedRapidam Boltdown Barrier fromFloodguards provides a fast, highlyeffective defence against flooding.Rapidam Boltdown is a temporaryphysical barrier that is erected at flooddanger points.

Its effectiveness is not only a result of itsstrength – Rapidam Boltdown holds backa tonne of water per metre – but also ofits speed of deployment. Ten metres of

Rapidam’s barrier can be rolled out in30 seconds.

Anchoring is simple. Expert Floodguardsinstallers fix a permanent, unobtrusiveconcrete beam flush to the groundcomplete with stainless steel sleeves. The barrier is fixed to the beam withstainless steel, tamper-proof bolts andaluminium angle strips and pushed intoplace.

Rapidam Boltdown’s footprint can beas little as a metre and the barrier can besealed to walls or extended to anylength, using either the Floodguard’spatented watertight zip technology, stanchion system or brick pillars, sections of up to 100m are possiblewith the correct handling equipment. The barrier can be left flat until the lastmoment to provide maximum siteaccess.

Once the danger is passed, just unboltthe barrier, clean it – the material alreadycontains anti-fungal, -ultraviolet and-alkali treatments – and roll it up, readyfor the next flood.

The Flood Guards Systems suite of products was pivitable in the Leeds City Council project.

The Secretary of State for the environment, Hilary Benn visited the neighbourhood in Leeds after thecontract was completed & saw first hand how the impact of flooding on homes and businesses canbe reduced by using floodguards that help keep flood water out of homes, and also reduce damageif water enters a property. The Secretary of State said: “Following the events of last summer, peopleare rightly concerned about how they can protect themselves from future flooding. There is muchthat can be done to lesson the impact of flooding on both residential and business properties, ifpeople have the right advice and help to do this. Doing so can also help to improve the terms ofyour insurance”.

Floodguards wins DEFRAPilot Scheme Project forLeeds City Council.

The Dunhill area of Leeds has been hitwith serious flooding 3 times in just 3years plus countless other near misses! This despite testimony to the Council in2005 that ‘it had never happened before’from a resident who had lived in the areasince the 1930s. The 2004 event provednot to be a ‘one-off’ or in fact a ‘once ina lifetime’ event at all.

The repeat flooding and the lack ofapproval or implementation of a CapitalScheme by the Environment Agencyencouraged Leeds City Council to look atinterim flood mitigation measures. Theannouncement of a series of DEFRA pilotschemes to help fund and enhance theflood resistance to individual propertiesgave the Council an opportunity to applyfor a contribution from CentralGovernment in competition with other

Local Authorities. Leeds City Councilbid was accepted in July 2007 and theCouncil subsequently made availablefunds to make an overall budget of£240,000 for the project.

A tender document was drafted and anumber of companies invited to submittheir tenders with a pre-requisite thatthey should be able to install BritishStandards Institute (BSI PAS 1188-1)accredited products. The propertieswere all very similar in design havingbeen built at the same time and theview was that protecting the doors andairbricks would be sufficient to protectthe properties from the risk of wateringress in a real flood condition.

Tenders were submitted by 3companies, with the most competitiveand moreover suitable for applicationbeing Flood Guards Systems Ltdproducts, and therefore this contractorwas duly accepted.

The project was planned for completion

in early 2008 and Floodguardsmanaged to install their flood protectionproducts to all of the properties withinthe set time scales imposed by theCouncil, hence delivering the contracton budget and on time!

There was an overall acceptance fromthe community for Floodguardsproducts which resulted in 68 of the 70qualifying property owners agreeing tohave products installed to their property– an acceptance rate of 97%.

Customer feedback was on the wholeextremely positive with commentsprovided such as ‘no better servicecould be given’.

The flow patterns of water arepredictable. Rivers are known to bursttheir banks at particular points, culvertsto overflow at known places andhollows to fill beyond their capacity inspecific circumstances.

In every case, the effects can be verycostly. Labour-intensive sandbaggingor unsightly earthworks have been thetraditional, but often inadequate, response.

Now, the patented RapidamFreestanding Barrier from Floodguardsprovides a fast, efficient and, above all, effective solution to flooding.

Like the Rapidam Boltdown, theFreestanding version is quick and easyto deploy.

Unlike Rapidam Boltdown, RapidamFreestanding needs minimal pre-floodpreparation. Penetrator screw anchors, originally developed for the United

States armed forces and only availablein the UK from Floodguards, are usedinitially to hold down the RapidamFreestanding Barrier.

Each anchor can hold 2,500 lbs – theequivalent of a cubic yard of crushedgranite. The barrier’s leading edge is thenburied in the ground or covered, just tostop water initially flowing underneath.

As the water rises, its sheer weight holdsthe barrier in place, adding greaterstrength to the structure.

Once the floods have subsided, RapidamFreestanding is decontaminated, disassembled and put back into store, ready for the next threat. The land leftbehind is untouched.

A special version of Rapidam has beendeveloped for emergency services suchas Fire and Rescue Service in the UK.This offers super fast deployment with noground preporation at all.

Rapidam Freestanding was awardedthe BBC Tomorrow’s WorldMillennium Invention.

Take two award-winning ideas and BSIapproved products from Floodguards, combine them and you arrive at theultimate in flood protection flexibility.

For areas prone to long-lasting floodsor where buildings are made of veryporous materials, entrances and wallsneed defending – which means youneed the Floodguard/RapidamCombo.

The Rapidam is used to protect themain body of the building, leavingentrances and fire exits free. Thisallows the premises to continue tobe used at a time of high flood risk.

When flood waters begin tothreaten the building, Floodguardsare clipped into place, sealing offthe entrances and exits from water. This takes approximately 30 secondsper entrance.

In a flood season, the Rapidamcan be positioned, with Floodguardsput in place only when the danger isimminent. This is particularly usefulfor commercial buildings that need toremain operational for the maximumamount of time.

The Floodguard/Rapidam Combois significantly cheaper than the costof water damage and is reusable, flood season after flood season.Unlike inefficient sandbags, theFloodguard/Rapidam Combo isquick to erect and has no disposalcosts. Many insurance companieswill also re-instate withdrawninsurance cover or reduce premiumsif an investment is made in aFloodguard/Rapidam Combo.

Rapitank

People registered with UK Environment Agency for telephone floodwarnings – 693 in 1997; more than 50,000 in 2003.

Dimensions:0.5m high 3m square to any size1.0m high 6m square to any size

Suitable for:

Just as the award-winning Rapidamkeeps water away from a building,Rapitank can either prevent floodwaterfrom gaining access – creating a dryrefuge – or be used as a storagecontainer, for example to hold cleanwater or retain contaminatedwater/liquids.

Rapitank is as quick and easy toerect as a Rapidam but also containsa groundsheet attached to the barrierfor a completely watertight structure. The seal is created by a patentedFloodguard beading seal. Rapitank is abespoke, modular tanking system andcan vary in size from 1m x 1m and canextend by 10 metre lengths to almostany size.

Extra equipment can be incorporatedinto a Rapitank – they containintegrated connection points. Asan example, vehicles or buildings canbe decontaminated within a Rapitank, retaining fouled water for filtrationand reuse or safe disposal. SmallerRapitanks can be assembled by oneperson and are perfect as securepersonnel decontamination sites.

Among a host of other uses are:

– Water holding tank– Desalination plant– Oil bund– Fish-holding tank– Fluid containment– Spillage retention– Utility protection– River oil pollution retention –

allowing clean water to passunder the Rapitank

Rapitank has been designed to beerected in adverse weather conditions, including high winds and driving rain.Rapitanks can be left flat until themoment they are needed and thenjust pulled up into position.

Rapitanks are light and need minimalmanpower to erect – perfect for fastreactions to emergencies.

The 2000 York floods led to353 homes and 204 gardensbeing flooded and 25 roads beingclosed. The official Council reportstated that 80,000 sandbags hadbeen deployed.

“There have been many anecdotalcases of excessive premiums, extravagant excesses applied andcases of house sales collapsingdue to the prospective purchaserbeing unable to obtain floodinsurance,” the report noted. No major flood defence workswere scheduled to begin before2007, at the earliest.

The York floods in 2000 have sincebeen dwarfed in terms of propertydamage by the floods in 2007, asthe country experienced anunprecedented level of flooding, costing the insurance sector over£4bn in repairs.

Airbricks and wall vents are essentialfor any modern building – withoutthem, homes, offices, shops andcommercial premises could not breathand would build up condensation.

But as well as allowing air tocirculate, airbricks and vents allowwater quickly to penetrate during aflood. They need watertight coversjust as much as doors needFloodguards.

Floodguards manufactures airbrickand vent covers in four standard sizes,to fit most regular-shaped openings:

– Single brick: 245mm x 115mm– Double brick: 245mm x 245mm– Triple brick: 390mm x 245mm– Circular: 105mm diameter

All covers are white – to remind youto remove them after the danger ispast – and are clipped to custom-fittedbackframes that have been sealed tothe wall. Like Floodguards, the greaterthe water pressure, the tighter theseal. After use, simply wash thecovers and put them away.

Backframes can be ordered in grey, brown, brick red and white but wecan also produce almost any customcolour to ensure that your framesblend into your walls. We can alsocustom-make backframes and coversto deal with any unusually-shapedairbricks or vents.

Floodalert

1.6 million people are at risk from river and coastal flooding inEngland and Wales. Future Flooding, UK Government report

Dimensions (h x w x d):Control panel80mmx 150mm x 60mm

Suitable for:

Flood Guards Systems Limited | 23

Floodguards technology is the bestpossible investment a householderor company can make in protectingagainst the devastating effects of aflood – but someone has to beavailable to put Floodguards or aRapidam in place.

If you are away, you need an alarmthat notifies keyholders that a potentialflood is on the way. And if you arethere but asleep, you need to bewoken up – which is why you needFloodguards’ Floodalert.

Like all good ideas, Floodalert isbased on a simple concept: a burglaralarm for water.

A sensor pod is installed at a pointwhere you know flood water reachesbefore it threatens your property –possibly a garden wall or the sideof an outbuilding. Immediately waterhits the pod’s sensor, an electronicalert is sent to a control box insideyour building.

The control box sets off an audiblealarm and starts dialling four telephonenumbers in turn with a recorded floodwarning message – and keeps diallinguntil it gets a positive response thathelp is on the way.

Your designated numbers can be foranyone, from a next-door neighbourto a registered keyholder or securitycompany. They then turn up and putyour Floodguards or Rapidam in place.

In common with all Floodguardsproducts, Floodalert is uncomplicatedand effective.

RapidamResponse Unit

“Many can expect at least a one in ten chance of being floodedevery year.” Sir David King, UK Government Chief Scientific Advisor

Dimensions:Standard trailer length

Suitable for:

24 | Flood Guards Systems Limited

The Rapidam Response Unit fromFloodguards is flood protection ina box – or, more precisely, a trailer. It is ready for action 24 hours a day,365 days a year.

The trailer contains a full RapidamFreestanding Barrier for 200 metresof flood defence, complete withearth anchors. It can be driven towherever there is a threat and all200 metres erected in less thana metre a minute by four people, assuming clear ground conditionsbut no other special measures.

This contrasts dramatically withtraditional flood defences based onsandbags. Typically, up to 40 peoplemight be involved for half a dayeach to build just 60 metres of flooddefence. After the flood, even moretime and manpower needs to beused to remove, decontaminateand dispose of the sandbags.

Rapidam Freestanding can be usedtime and again – all that is neededbefore dismantling and repacking isa quick wash-down.

Floodguards’ Rapidam Response Unitis also a capital cost and long-terminvestment, rather than the short-termexpense of temporary sandbagsand labour – almost invariably fundedout of an emergency budget or dailyrunning costs. For private companies, the Rapidam Response Unit is taxdepreciable and appears as acapital asset on a balance sheet.

Bespoke analysis

Householders and businesses are notalone in their battles against flooding.Every year some £800 million is spenton flood defences by governmentagencies, with the EnvironmentAgency in particular constantlyconsidering the sites of new flooddefences. Many local authorities alsoundertake excellent defence work.

But all public service agencieslook only at the big picture, wherepublic money can make the mostdifference. If their cost/benefit analysistells them that work at one out of twosites will give them more protection fortaxpayers’ money, the other site will bedropped until more funding is available– which could be years, if ever.

For neighbourhoods or communitieswhere waiting simply is not an option, the Floodguards Bespoke flood riskanalysis service provides the expertisethey need.

Our flood defence specialistswill produce a full report detailingall flood defence options for acommunity, from major works toindividual building protection, andincludes a full cost/benefit analysisthat includes the effects on propertyprices, insurance availability andpurely local factors. These can coveritems such as groundwater, alluvialdeposits, historic flooding, drainconditions, runaways, potential andexisting culverts and soakaways.

You will know how much risk thecommunity faces and what theoptions are for reducing that risk.In other words, the community willbe independently advised about whatis worth doing and what isn’t. Armedwith information, the community canthen decide what it wants to do.

Any products detailed in thereport – including major equipmentmanufactured by others – will be

BSI quality approved. Floodguardsproducts will be included only whererelevant: we recognise that approachesto community flooding can differ fromindividual property protection.
