Rabbi’s Message

Get WellFirst Hebrew wishes a speedy recovery to:

Morton Bensky, Leonard Brown, Harold Krameisen, Raphael Henkin

Dear Friends,

Usually the summer is a time of relaxation. This year – not so much. We have all, I suspect, been glued to our many sources of information about Israel’s struggle with Hamas in Gaza. Israel enjoyed wide support at first, when the rockets were flying into largest swath of the Land ever. But as soon as Israel’s forces crossed into Gaza, and rocket fire was returned, with tragic consequences for civilians – support turned to criticism. Suddenly we all were constrained to remind friends, reporters, diplomats and officials that the threat to Israel’s citizens and sovereignty were real, on-going, and serious. They constituted an existential threat of the first order.

At the same time, Anti-Semitism, especially across Europe, emerged ugly and violent. Suddenly Jews, civilians – citizens of their various countries – became targets of violent attacks. We can hardly but be concerned about this turn of events. The feeling definitely emerged that Anti-Semitism was latent, waiting to emerge. It has now raised its fierce head in full force. And leaves us very much concerned for the safety and future of Europe’s emerging Jewish communities.

All the while, we at First Hebrew continue to make plans for an exciting new year. Our Sanctuary Renovation Committee has done a wonderful job creating a renewed prayer space in our Sanctuary. The Rededication has been set for Friday evening, September 5. I hope you will join us for that exciting evening.

Our Hebrew School has undergone the first stage of our re-visioning of education at First Hebrew. It’s new name, Jewish Learning Experience (JLE), reflects the new focus on experiential learning – learning by doing, both in

our classrooms and building, and in other locations. Our primary focus will be “tikkun olam”, “mending the world”. We will explore the many ways in which we feel called to address the needs of our local community, Jewish and general. We will learn about Judaism’s rich teachings about our responsibility to take care of the environment.

In addition to learning Hebrew, and holidays and customs, much of our daily work will focus on projects that students will design. We will build a sukkah that students envision. We will create a new siddur (prayerbook) from which we will pray during weekly services. These and other projects will engage our students’ imagination and will evoke excitement and commitment to First Hebrew and the Jewish people worldwide.

Our Adult Education program this year will also reflect the value of “mending the world”. We will welcome Scholar in Residence Rabbi Larry Troster in March. He will introduce us to the teachings of our tradition about preserving the environment. We will have the opportunity to think together about how we can accomplish goals of making our world safe and preserve it for generations to come.

As we enter the month of Elul, preceding Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur, we pray for a lasting peace for Israel among its neighbors. We ready our souls for introspection and re-commitment to vital Jewish living at First Hebrew and throughout the world. And we commit our actions to bring healing to the many quarters where it is so needed.

I wish you an early Shanah tovah. May you and your loved ones be inscribed for life and may you be committed to joining in the revitalization of our congregation in the days ahead.

President’s MessageAs we grow closer to the end of the summer, I

would like to mention all of the exciting things that have been happening at First Hebrew while many of you were away.

Our sanctuary renovation project is almost completed. Thanks to the hard work of Committee Chair Bruce Bleiweis and Bruce Lindenbaum, Mark Stern and Daniela Rosen, our sanctuary has been freshened and improved. New pews – which are incredibly comfortable – new carpeting, a widened and less steep stairway to the Bimah, a new set of bookshelves and a relocated tree of life, along with some improved lighting, highlight the restoration. We all owe big thank yous to the Krantz Foundation, the Sisterhood, the Men’s Club and the library committee for making funds available so we could accomplish the renovation without asking our members to contribute to a building fund.

We have scheduled a rededication event for our sanctuary on Friday evening, September 5. The event will kick off with a brief rededication ceremony and commemoration at 5:30, followed by a reception and our Friday night service. We expect that Congresswoman Nita Lowey will attend, as will Mayor Catalina, Supervisor Puglisi, other public figures and local religious leaders from other faiths. We anticipate that there will be press coverage of our event. It should be an interesting time, and a great reception. Please join us for the event!

The Rabbi and the education committee have

been working hard to create programming and planfor the opening of our repurposed and renamedreligious school program. Now known as the JewishLearning Experience at First Hebrew, our school’scurriculum will emphasize hands on, practicalexperience with regard to cultural affairs, socialaction and other Jewish concerns, while stillteaching Hebrew and Jewish history and tradition. The Rabbi has committed to making our religiousschool experience much more relevant andenjoyable for our children.

This year, we welcome back Cantor Arad forHigh Holiday services. Her fine voice and spiritualityhave been remarkable in past years, and it’s good tohave her back for another year. I look forward toseeing all of you at services.

On a personal note, I would like to thank all ofyou for your care and support with regard to my tworecent surgeries, in late April and late July. Bothprocedures were extremely successful, and thenews after each was good. It’s wonderful, and agreat relief, to get these things behind me once andfor all. I would also like to thank the Congregationfor the many gestures and expressions of sympathyon the passing of my brother Michael in early July.It certainly has been an eventful year for my familyand me, and we are looking forward to a much moremundane time in the year to come.

Sisterhood…Women Enjoying Jewish LifeIt has been a long summer. As I sit down to

write this, a few fragile hours of a cease fire exist between Israel and the Gaza strip. I hope by the time you read this, the fighting will have ended and peace will have returned to the land of Israel and progress will be made towards lasting peace. Could there really be more to wish for as we prepare for the High Holy Days? Could we really begin the New Year on a better footing than one which begins with peace?

Of course, as the holidays approach, we all will turn some of our thoughts at this time of teshuvah (repentance) to our personal lives and to our relationships with loved ones and friends. We should also look to our communities, both here at First Hebrew Congregation and in the larger community in which we live. There is also much to worry about in the world at large- other conflicts, outbreaks of disease, famine, climate change. And then there is Israel.

Some things are in our power to change or improve. We all have our own decisions to make about our personal relationships. For our community, sending in your membership to Sisterhood helps us support the First Hebrew family and enrich the experience of all our members and their families. It enables us to be active both in our religious community and in our local community. Our members help support the local food pantry,

victims of domestic violence, and other worthy causes here and further afield. Did you know the First Hebrew building has solar panels on its roof to help us be a greener congregation? You can also increase your knowledge of world affairs and therefore choose how to educate and participate with others in important issues which are all part of the important Jewish value of Tikkun Olam (repairing the world). We can all stand with and support the people of Israel as we have over the past weeks of the summer through whatever is to come. And we can pray for a peaceful New Year for them, for us, and for the world.

On a more local note, we invite you all to join us as we welcome the New Year with a celebration of the fall holidays at our first meeting of the year on Sunday, September 7th. Chef Rene Leon will join us for a demonstration and tasting of delicious foods you can share at all the festive meals to come this holiday season. Breakfast will be served at 9:15 and the program will begin at 10AM. We look forward to seeing you then and to sharing this special season with you. On behalf of the Sisterhood board, I wish you and your families a Happy, Healthy, and Sweet New Year.

L’Shanah Tovah, Mindy Steinholz Sisterhood President

Message from the Men’s Club Happy Rosh Hashanah!

September is here! Happy New Year! A time of rebirth, re-affirmation, and promise.... A time to celebrate the upcoming fall harvest with apples and honey to signify the sweetness of life. What’s in store for us in the year 5775? Will it be extra special because it’s the same, forwards and backwards (a numeric palindrome that happens every 110 years)?

To all of the male members of FHC, seriously consider joining Men’s Club this year. We meet once a month on Sunday mornings in the lounge area where we catch up on what’s going on in our lives while enjoying one heck of a breakfast. Men’s Club helps support FHC activities on various levels

from cooking to painting, and we planned the first FHC Person of the Year celebration. We plan nights out at local venues including Birdsall House, Peekskill Brewery, and West Point sports events. Based on what we have done and continue to do, maybe we should consider changing our name to FHC “Mensch” Club to more accurately match our name to what we do and who we are!

Join us for our first breakfast meeting and help us plan a great and exciting year ahead. The more the merrier!

Shanah Tovah!

Message from the Principal ………………….....J L EDear FHC members and parents,

What’s in a name? The question is not original, but the answer is important. Our education program will continue to teach Hebrew, holidays, customs. But it will do so in a much wider array of ways of learning. That’s why we are now calling it the Jewish Learning Experience, or JLE for short.

We all learn all the time. We don’t need the formal structure of a classroom much of that time. We learn by doing, by living. That is what we want for our children, our youngest learners. We want them to learn in a way that not only teaches information, or even particular skills. We want them to learn in a way that informs and enriches their hearts, that helps them grow as individual human beings, and that helps them discover their own connection to the Jewish people here and in Israel. There is a name for this kind of learning too: “whole person learning.”

Through the approach of Project-Based Learning (PBL) our young people will learn how to identify issues that need to be addressed, access resources they need to respond, and design and carry out a number of specific projects. These are group activities, so each learner is engaged with others. Skills for team-building, community-building, will be developed. This process is just like real problem solving in the real world. It is not homework. It is learning how we live in society.

Our focus is the central Jewish concept of

“tikkun olam,” or “mending the world.” This idea begins with the recognition that God’s creation wasn’t final. It leaves room for us to be God’s partners. Our approach throughout the year will be to learn Jewish insights about a particular area in need of “mending” – the poor and needy in our community, elderly members in our community who want and need to be included, people with disabilities who are just like us, only in a different way. We will think about what projects we can do to meet these and other needs. Finally, we will reflect on what we have learned, through study of our tradition, and through our own hands-on response to the need. This approach is holistic. The context for our learning is truly life itself. Our learners have much to learn, and much they can teach us.

We begin this process on the first day of Jewish Learning Experience, Sunday, September 7. Our parents and children will gather to learn what our rich tradition can teach us about how we can help others in need. That learning will frame our responses to various needs as we approach them throughout the year.

I look forward to beginning this exciting process with you. I believe this will truly be a Shanah tovah, a good New Year. I wish a Happy and Sweet New Year for you and your family. L’shanah tovah tikatevu, May you be inscribed for a good year.

Why are we asking you to donate your time to helping out with Bingo? It generates approximately $25,000 in revenue per year to our operation of the synagogue. The time commitment is only about three hours on a Wednesday night. We now start Bingo at 6:30 pm so you and our customers can get home earlier. If you are opposed to fulfilling your obligation as a member, then pay the $400 Bingo assessment immediately and let Lisa know to take you off the Bingo list. As a member in good standing it is your obligation to participate in this fundraising activity. If the congregation chooses not to continue providing Bingo to the community and forfeiting the OPM (other people’s money), then the congregation will need to be assessed accordingly to raise the $20,000, or determine what services will be cut. Do your part of fundraising and show up for your assigned Bingo night. Bring a book or magazine to read (there is time when you are waiting). If you come late, it is still better than not coming at all. Or, if you choose, send the $400.

Important Note: Your 2014–2015 dues include a surcharge for Bingo. If a member family meets its two-bingo requirement during the year, the family will receive a credit. Similarly, if a single member meets his/her one-bingo requirement during the year, he/she will receive a credit.

URGENT MESSAGE: If you are unable to attend on your scheduled Bingo night, IT IS YOUR RESPONSBILITY TO GET A REPLACEMENT.Thank you for your continued cooperation!!!! Workers should report to Bingo by 6:15 pm and are expected to stay until at least 10:00 pm

Let Everyone Know How Proud We are of Our Children! The Board of Education would like to honor our wonderful Bar/Bat Mitzvah students in a special way!

We would like each student to submit a brief biography (5-7 sentences) to be placed in the synagogue bulletin. The biography could include information such as their Bar/BatMitzvah date, grade, school, outside interests, and should include a short description about his/her service project; you may also include a photograph if you like. The responsibility to write and submit this information belongs to the family of the child. Please do not cause unnecessary disappointment for your children when they don’t see their names in the bulletin with their classmates. The biography must be submitted to the editor SIX WEEKS prior to the first day of the Bar/Bat Mitzvah month to ensure placement in a timely fashion. Any articles sent after that time will be placed in the next bulletin, which may be after the Bar/Bat Mitzvah date. Please submit the biography to the bulletin at bulletin@ FirstHebrew.org or you can mail or fax to the FHC office.

We are happy to consider all articles submitted to Kehilataynu; however, we reserve the right to edit for style, and length. In addition, all articles submitted by FHC members are labeled as such and do not reflect the opinion of FHC or the Board of Trustees.

Please keep the following in mind: • Articles and announcements must be received in the FHC

office by the date below. • Please submit your article or announcement via e-mail to
