Bella Vista Public School

A new school at Bella Vista has been built, commencing operations from Day 1 Term 1 2019. A new catchment for Bella Vista Public School has been established, together with some adjustments to the catchments of surrounding existing schools.

Where do I find out about new catchment areas? Catchment information is available from the local schools and/or from the School Finder website. https://education.nsw.gov.au/school-finder/index In general, if you move into the area and have a child starting school in 2019 then that child will go to the local school that services your new catchment area.

How will changing catchments affect siblings of already enrolled pupils? Enrolment changes due to amended catchment boundaries will be managed in line with the DoE enrolment policy. More information on the DoE's enrolment policy is available at https://education.nsw.gov.au/policy-library/related-documents/V03_pd02_06_enrolment_of_students.pdf If you currently have a child at Kellyville Public School and a younger sibling who is due to start school, then the younger sibling will be able to attend the Kellyville Public School attended if you so choose, even if you home address is outside of the new catchment area. Children of families that have deep ties with a certain school will have the opportunity to apply for special consideration through an out of area enrolment application.

Kindergarten Information Evening

On Monday 3rd September all 2019 Kindergarten parents are invited to attend the Kindergarten Information evening in the School Hall. The Information evening will commence at 6.00pm and finish around 8.00pm. This is an opportunity for you to meet some of the staff, students and parents of the school and access information about Kellyville Public School. Some of the topics to be discussed include:-

How to prepare you child for school

Programs and opportunities available at Kellyville Public School

School uniforms

School procedures

Opportunities for parent involvement at the school

Kindergarten 2019 orientation program

The Sydney Hills Garden Competition : A Project of

From the Deputy Principal …. Kidsmatter is an Australian Primary Schools Mental Health Initiative which is being implemented at Kellyville Public School over the next 3 years. It is a way for schools to nurture happy, balanced students through mental health promotion and early intervention activity and planning. KidsMatter focuses on creating positive school communities that support the mental health and wellbeing of every member of the school community. Please come along at 7.00pm this evening, Tuesday, 21st August, prior to the P&C Meeting and learn about this initiative. It is important for you and your child/children. During my time at Kellyville as Deputy Principal and as leader of the Learning Support Team, a great deal of my time has been spent assisting many parents and students with wellbeing initiatives and this assistance has varied greatly, depending upon the needs of the individuals. Sometimes parents and students just need someone to talk to and discuss their problems with and sometimes they need guidance as to where to go for more professional assistance. I am saddened when I see and hear students being mean to others and this does happen at times, even at our school. Students need guidance from teachers and parents as to the way their words can hurt others, just as much as the way in which their physical actions can hurt others. Children can be very hurtful and yet when they are spoken to about their actions, they often do not realise how hurtful their comments and actions have been to another. It is important to encourage children to stand up for what is right and denounce what they know is wrong, whether we are talking about the physical or verbal actions of others. If we could encourage all children to do the right thing and to think carefully before they act or speak, then we would be building a better and more positive community for our students. I have included an Anti-bullying Pledge (from Bullying.org) which I think would be a worthwhile discussion topic for parents and their children. We must remember, however, that children also need to be taught resilience when things are sometimes said to them that they don’t like, as life is sometimes distressing. Tomorrow I am attending professional development with Ian Luscombe a well known positive behaviour management specialist. Ian will be sharing new insights and techniques into understanding the reasons why children do what they do and he will provide positive strategies for managing their behaviours. Some of the topics covered will include:

How to promote consistency amongst staff when dealing with students with challenging behaviours.

School culture and how it supports or hinders the consistent application of rules.

I should be able to bring many positive ideas for behaviour management back to Kellyville to share with staff and students.

This is for me My friends today

And my friends tomorrow. I think being mean stinks!

I won’t watch someone get picked on Because I am a do something person

Not a do nothing person. I care

I can help change things I can be a leader

In my world there are no bullies allowed.

Bullying is bad Bullying bites

Bullying bothers me I know that sticking up for someone is the right thing to

do

My name is ________________ And I won’t stand by

I will stand up.

Book Week This week is Book Week and the theme this year is Find Your Treasure. Regardless of what age children are, picture books are an effective way to inspire a child’s

imagination and in turn their creative writing ability. They lend themselves to many hours of fun creating stories and encouraging the use of descriptive vocabulary. They can be used verbally to stimulate oral language and they can also be used to inspire the author in every child. Ask your child to borrow a picture book from the library on their next borrowing day.

On Thursday we are participating in the 2018 Great Book Swap. Students are asked to to donate one or more preloved books and bring a gold coin to take home another preloved book form the school. Money raised will go to the Indigenous Literacy foundation

Father’s Day Stall Thursday, August 30th is our Father’s Day Stall. Gifts will range in price from $1.00 to $10.00, so please bring your money and buy something wonderful for dad for Father’s Day. Thank you to our wonderful P&C helpers for organising this stall for us and for the dads in our community.

Father’s Day Breakfast/Open Classrooms Friday, 31st August is our Father’s Day Breakfast starting at 7.30am. The classrooms will then be open from 8.50am until 9.30am for children to share valuable time in their classrooms with their dad. Please come along and support your child/children. Remember Mums that you are not invited on this day due to restrictions with numbers etc, but the canteen would be very happy to have some helpers on the day if you have some time to spare.

Kindergarten Enrolment for 2019 Kindergarten enrolments are now being accepted for 2019. Please advise friends, neighbours and relatives that enrolment forms may be obtained from the front office. Please note that the date of birth must be verified before enrolment can be completed. A birth certificate, passport or record of birth will satisfy this requirement. It is also necessary to obtain current immunisation details (in the form of a certificate, not the blue book) as these are required for school record cards.

NAPLAN Online School Readiness Test. This term schools across NSW will be participating in the NAPLAN Online school readiness test. The school readiness test is a ‘practice run’ designed to help schools assess their technical and administrative readiness for the transition to NAPLAN Online. Kellyville Public School students in Years 3 and 5 will be participating in the readiness test between Monday 3rd September and Friday 7th September 2018. The readiness test will involve students in Year 3 and 5, sitting two, 40-minute assessments, a writing test and a combined numeracy/literacy test. (Year 3 students will not participate in the writing test). Student participation in the readiness test is an opportunity for them to become familiar with the NAPLAN Online test format. It is not an assessment of student ability and there will be no reporting of student results. It is important to note that participation in the school readiness test has no effect on students’ NAPLAN results from the tests students sat in May. More information about NAPLAN Online is available on the department’s NAPLAN Online website: https://education.nsw.gov.au/ teaching-and-learning/studentassessment/

The Tell Them From Me Student Survey This term, like many other public schools in the state, we are again participating in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW State-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices. The survey is a great opportunity for our students to

provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. More than 6,300 schools in Australia and around the world have used Tell Them From Me to survey 5.4 million students. Capturing the voices of our students will help improve how we do things at our school. More information about the survey is available at: http:surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/

I would like to assure you that this survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 27 August and 26 October. Participating in the survey is voluntary.

A consent form and FAQs for parents/carers about the survey has been sent home with students (Years 4 to 6 only) and are also included in the newsletter. If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the form to school by Thursday 23rd August. Copies of the form and FAQs are available from: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents

Year 1 Excursion to the Old Schoolhouse Museum at North Ryde Year 1 students have enjoyed an excursion to the Old Schoolhouse Museum at North Ryde. Students learnt what school was like

in the 19th and 20th Centuries. Some favourite activities were maypole dancing, drill exercises with wooden dumbbells, toasting

bread by the classroom fire and then eating it with golden syrup, making stencils with a jelly pad, going on a treasure hunt for

historical artefacts and writing using ink nib pens. Mrs Mangold almost received the cane for distracting Mrs Browning with

chatter during the lesson. Besides this minor incident, Kellyville PS was represented amiably by all and the staff complimented us

on the behaviour and respectful attitude of our Year 1 students.

Year 5 Camp: Narrabeen Lakes Monday 13th-Thursday 16th August 2018

Narrabeen Lakes was fun and challenging. We participated in many exciting activities. Some included: abseiling, kayaking, bushwalks and games. I enjoyed being with my friends and I will never forget this experience. Camp taught us independence and confidence. I loved the kayaking. By Emma C 5A For Year 5 camp, we were supposed to go to Milson Island, instead we were sent to Narrabeen Lake. It was a wonderful experience filled with adventure. We did many activities, such as a high ropes course, abseiling (personally my favourite!), bushwalking, cooking, kayaking, rock climbing and archery. In my cabin, I was with Josie, Eliza, Jasmine, Sienna, Allegra, Holly, Emma, Isabelle and Noura. During spare time in our cabins, we would laugh and talk. Narrabeen Lake is an experience I will never forget. By Annika C 5A Camp is a really good opportunity for children to go to. At Narrabeen Lake, I saw all children having a go at every activity. I think at our camp, everyone got very engaged, as there were many activities. Some, like me, may have conquered fears, like being really high up or being away from their family for quite a while. I liked doing the high ropes course the best. I thank the helpers that made this happen and of course all the Year 5 teachers! By Mankaran G 5A The Year 5’s were lucky enough to go on a 4 day camp. Originally, we were meant to go to Milson Island, but their water supply ran out, so we ended up at Narrabeen Lake. Either way, we still had tonnes of fun. We went kayaking, rock climbing, abseiling and many more activities. One other activity we did was the high ropes course. I didn’t do the high ropes part, but I did the flying fox at the end which was heaps of fun. Sadly, we had to go home eventually, but it was all worth it and I had a great time. By Sienna W 5A Like any other Year 5 camp, you would go to Milson Island, but since they had no running water, we went to Narrabeen Lake instead. The activ-ities we did were: kayaking, high ropes, bush walking with a cookout, archery, rock climbing, abseiling and an activities course. My favourite

activity was the archery because I have always wanted to do it, plus I got an arrow in the yellow section! I also loved kayaking. Best camp ever!

Pre School Visit

On Monday 13th and Thursday 16th August, Kellyville Public School hosted our annual visit from Kellyville Preschool with many excited preschool children keen to see what “Big School” was like. There were a few siblings who knew the ropes but many new faces who came along with their Educators and Parent Helpers. On Monday Mrs McPhee took the group through the school and on Thursday it was Mrs Khattab’s turn. There were visits to the Kindergarten classrooms, the library where Mrs Sergejeff read a story, the SkyWalker Playground, the Aboriginal Garden, the chickens and the basketball court where the children enjoyed some games. Finally the children headed to the Canteen for a yummy ice block. A special thank you to our Kellyville Public School Year Four helpers who assisted on both days! We are looking forward to visiting the Pre-School soon!

Netball NSW Schools Cup Metropolitan Finals

On Tuesday, 14th August, the School Cup Netball Team A competed in the Metropolitan Finals at Netball Central in Homebush. The team was comprised of 11 students from Year 6, including 4 boys who have never played competitive netball. Mrs Walker was our nominated professional National B umpire for the day and Mrs Browning was the enthusiastic and audible coach. Mrs Gleeson was our scorer for the day and many parents were there in support. We won the first 5 games, qualifying us for the semi-finals. Overall we finished third in the Sydney Metropolitan area. This was

an outstanding achievement and we are extremely proud of all students who participated. The team will now challenge the

teachers to a lunch time game of netball…

Year 4 Zoosnooze Last week 4A, 4S and 4D got the chance to attend the opportunity of a lifetime, an overnight excursion at the Sydney Taronga Zoo! It was amazing for Year 4 to experience life in a zoo and to learn what zoologists do every day. 4D and 4S slept in tents for the night while 4A slept in a classroom alongside some reptiles and spiders! For many of us, it was our first time away from home and there was a lot of excitement. The students learnt many new things that they can incorporate into their work on environments and to expand their knowledge. We got to do so many different activities, like a workshop where we learnt about Indigenous Australians and we got to see some animals from the Dreamtime Stories. Some of the highlights of the excursion were: seeing the peacocks and learning that they could go into any habitat they wanted, watching the free flight bird show and meeting the bearded dragon. This is what some Year 4 students said:

It was a great experience to see nocturnal animals. Shivam It was good to pet the animals and have an experience of being a zoo keeper. Eunice It was a good experience to see the daily animal lifestyle. Lily R

PULSE 2018

PULSE is an annual showcase of excellence in the performing arts that is held in the Sydney Opera House. It provides talented students, from primary and secondary public schools across Sydney, an opportunity to perform works in Dance, Drama and Music. On the 9th August 2018, 16 of our Stage 3 students performed in this showcase as part of the Primary Massed Choir.

The students arrived at the Opera House at around 11am and participated in a 5 hour rehearsal. They worked very hard. Then Mrs Roberts took the children to City Extra for some well-deserved food in preparation for the performance that evening.

The Kellyville students sang beautifully and represented Kellyville Public School with pride. Mrs Walker and Mrs Hocking came to watch the show and thoroughly enjoyed the choir’s performance. We would like to extend a very big thank you to all parents/carers that came to watch and support the children. Congratulations to Levi B 6J, Mariana B 5/6V, Sophia C 5/6V, Piper C 6T, Annika C 5A, Tamika D 5/6V, Selina F 6J, Adison G 5G, Anusha H 5/6V, Keisha H 6T, Nicole K 6J, Lauren L 6G, Tara M 6J, Abrielle S 6G, Bella T 5/6V and Shyla V 6J The choir and Mrs Roberts had a fabulous time and look forward to performing at school events later this year.

Maths Forum

Kindergarten parents are invited to attend a Math Forum in KB on Wednesday 22nd August between 9:00am and 9:40am. We will provide you with an overview of the process of learning to maths. Examples of activities used in the classroom will be modelled so that you can these with your child at home. Parents are welcome to attend the session on the day. Demonstrate basic number strategies and tasks learnt in class.
