This week, Tidbits has lots of information about the Irish, everything from St. Patrick to Notre Dame. Celebrate St. Paddy’s Day by learning some interesting facts about the Emerald Isle.

IRISH INFO (continued):• Patrick wasn’t made a saint until the early

17th century, hundreds of years after his death in the year 461. March 17 is the anniversary of his death and is his religious feast day.

•AlthoughwethinkofthecolorgreenwhenSt.Patrickismentioned, bluewasthefirstcolorto represent the hero. In 1783, The Order of St. Patrick was founded, the senior order of chivalry and fellowship of knights. The Order of the Thistle already used green for their uniforms and the Order of the Garter used dark blue, so the Order of St. Patrick used a shade of sky blue. Military uniforms were of “St. Patrick’s Blue” and during the time of KingHenryVIII,andtheflagofIrelandwasa gold harp on a blue background. The harp remains as the country’s national emblem today.

• Between 1846 and 1900, about 2,873,000people emigrated from Ireland to America, making it the second largest nationality group of immigrants, second only to Germany. The most predominant occupation of those newcomers was that of skilled weaver.

• In 2010, about 34.7millionU.S. residentsclaimed ancestors from Ireland. What were the most common Irish surnames of these folks? The last names of Murphy, Kelly, and O’Sullivan are considered the top three “most Irish.” Other common Irish surnames include Walsh, O’Brien, Byrne, Ryan, O’Connor, O’Neill, and O’Reilly.

•Irelandhashaditsinfluenceongeographicallocations in the U.S. Seven communitiesare named Shamrock, including locations in Texas, Oklahoma, and West Virginia. Sixteen other towns are named Dublin, sharing the name with Ireland’s capital. North Carolina is home to the community of Emerald Isle, population 3,655.

• St. Patrick’s Day often brings beer andtaverns to mind, but that tradition didn’t start in Ireland. The Irish Parliament declared the day a religious holiday in 1903, meaning that all the pubs were closed. In 1970, that bill was overturned and the day became a national holiday rather than a religious observance.

• The traditionofaSt.Patrick’sDayparadebegan in America, not Ireland. New York City washometothefirstparade,heldonMarch17, 1762. Irish soldiers serving in the British army organized the celebration to honor the Catholic feast day of Ireland’s patron saint. Today, New York’s parade is the largest in the world with more than 200,000 marchers along the Fifth Avenue route. Close to three million spectators observe the parade, which doesnotallowautomobilesorfloats.

SHORT STUFFThis week there’s no shortage of short things! Take a look at a number of items containing the word “short.” • Randy Newman’s 1977 Billboard top hit “Short

People” described his subject, “They got little baby legs that stand so low, you got to pick ‘em up just to say hello.” Who is classified as a short person? The term “short stature” refers to any person substantially under the average height for a person of the same age and gender. Pediatricians use a measurement called standard deviation that compares the height of different children. A child’s height must be more than two SD’s below average height in order to have short stature, and 95% percent of comparable children are taller.

• Do you know the difference between IRS forms 1040A and 1040EZ? Form 1040A is the “short form” while 1040EZ is the “easy” form, the simplest way to file taxes. Both are limited to taxpayers with less than $100,000 in taxable income who take the standard deduction. However, the easy form is only for those with no dependents.

• A short sale on the stock exchange means that the seller does not actually own the shares he/she is selling and has to borrow them before being able to deliver. When the share price falls, the short seller buys them and returns them to the lender, resulting in a gain on the deal.

• If someone calls you short, he/she might be referring to your height, but could be telling you that your demeanor is abrupt, discourteous, or unfriendly. A short presentation doesn’t always refer to its duration. It might mean it was succinct and concise.

March 11: in 537, the Goths laid siege to Rome. In 1958, a U.S. B-47 bomber accidentally dropped a nuclear bomb near Florence, S.C. The bomb didn’t go off because of its safety features.

March 12: in 1912, Juliette Gordon Low founded the Girl Guides, which later became the Girl Scouts of America. In 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt delivered the first of his radio “fireside chats.”

March 13: in 1868, the impeachment trial of President Andrew Johnson began in the U.S. Senate; he was eventually acquitted by one vote. In 1925, a law went into effect in Tennessee prohibiting the teaching of evolution.

March 14: in 1939, the republic of Czechoslovakia was dissolved, opening the way for Nazi occupation. In 1964, a jury in Dallas found strip-club owner Jack Ruby guilty of murdering Lee Harvey Oswald, the accused assassin of President Kennedy.

March 15: in 44 B.C., Roman dictator Julius Caesar was assassinated by a group of nobles that included his erstwhile ally Brutus. In 1964, actress Elizabeth Taylor married actor Richard Burton in Montreal; it was her fifth marriage, his second.

March 16: in 1836, the independent Republic of Texas approved a constitution. In 1968, during the Vietnam War, the My Lai Massacre was carried out by U.S. troops under the command of Lt. William L. Calley Jr.

March 17: in 461, according to tradition, St. Patrick - the patron saint of Ireland - died in Saul, where he had built a church. In 1966, a U.S. midget submarine found a missing hydrogen bomb that had fallen from an American bomber into the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Spain.

Answer to last week’s question: This week in 1972, Alabama Gov. George Wallace was shot and paralyzed while campaigning for the Democratic presidential nomination in Maryland.

This week’s question: In 1790, who became the first U.S. secretary of state?

IRISH INFO (continued):of the country’s politics. The orange stands for

the Irish Protestants, green for the Catholics, and white represents the hope that peace be reached between the two.

•Haveyoueverheardofthetrifolium dubium? That’s the name given to the shamrock by botanists. The early Celts referred to the shamrock as the seamroy, and considered this three-leafed clover a sacred plant with mystical properties. Legend has it that St. Patrick used the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity to first-century Irish pagans. During the 17thcentury when the English began seizing Irish land and prohibiting the use of their native language and Catholic religion, many Irish started wearing the shamrock as a symbol of pride in their heritage.

•TheIrishword lobaircin means “small-bodied fellow,” and has been modified a bit to theEnglish word “leprechaun.” These little imps date back to the early Celtic beliefs in fairies, those tiny men and women with magical powers, who used those powers for either good or evil. Leprechauns were seen as grumpy little men, whose duties were to mend the shoes of the other fairies. We’ve all heard of the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Folklore claims that the little men have great treasures stored in crocks, and use trickery to protect it from others. If a leprechaun is captured by a human, he has the magical power to grant three wishes in exchange for his release. In 1959, Walt DisneyStudiosreleasedthefilmDarby O’Gill and the Little People, which gave us the image of cheerful and friendly leprechauns, but in Irish folklore, they are cantankerous and mischievous.

•Indiana’sUniversityofNotreDameishometo the Fighting Irish, a team that played its inaugural game in November of 1887. In 1918, Knute Rockne took over as head

coach and his record of the highest winning percentage (.881) in football history, either college or professional, still stands. Notre Dame has produced the second largest number of players drafted into the NFL, the greatest number of Heisman Trophy winners, and ten former Irish have been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Every home game has been sold out since 1966, with the exception of one Thanksgiving Day contest against the Air Force in 1973, when the students had gone home for the holiday.

SHORT STUFF (continued):

• Look at all the idioms in the English language that contain the word “short.” You can make short work of something by finishing it quickly. You might run short (not have enough), fall short (fail to measure up to a certain standard), or cut short (interrupt someone). If you’ve submitted your resume for a job, you might be on the short list, one that contains those narrowed down from the full pool of applicants. Hopefully, on that resume, you didn’t sell yourself short, that is, didn’t give yourself full credit where it was deserved. You certainly wouldn’t want to get the short end of the stick, which might mean unfair treatment or not getting what you are worthy of.

• If you want to retain information in your short-term memory, it will be necessary for you to repeat it out loud or mentally rehash it from time to time. By doing so, the data re-enters the memory’s storage, enabling it to be preserved for a longer period.

• What in the world is hydrogenated vegetable oil? Just a fancy name for shortening! Hydrogenation involves adding extra hydrogen atoms to vegetable fats, which turns them into solids. Shortening is 100% fat, compared to the 80% fat content of butter and margarine. Procter & Gamble introduced Crisco, an abbreviation of “crystallized cottonseed oil” in June of 1911.

• It’s as easy as 1-2-3! Making shortbread, that is. The traditional recipe calls for one part sugar, two parts butter, and three parts flour. This little treat originated in Scotland during medieval times, when the word “short” was used to describe all things crisp and crumbly. Shortcake is not the same as shortbread. It uses vegetable fat rather than butter and adds some leavening agent such as baking powder, resulting in a different texture.

Q: My 7-year-old Dachshund-mix licks at everything - her furniture, her bed, and she even licks leaves during walks. I believe poor Goldie was kept in a crate for many hours as a puppy. Do you have any insights on her behavior? - J.A.C., Orlando, FLA: Dr. Ilana Reisner, a veterinary behaviorist in Philadelphia, PA, explains that persistent licking can be coined a “displacement behavior,” sort of letting off steam, as an outlet for anxiety, much as nail biting can be for people. However, since your dog seems so intent, more might be going on.” One determination of seriousness is to assess if your dog can easily be distracted from licking and redircted to another behavior, such as coming when you call her. Lots of folks might jump to the idea that Goldie has a compulsive disorder, and certainly that possibility exists. However, Reisner says to first rule out a medical explanation (which most likely explains the licking), particularly a possible gastro-intestinal issue, or even chronic tonsillitis. Scoping with biopsies will rule out the stomach issue and visually looking at throat will rule out the other. Crazy as it sounds, a food allergy is also possible. Reisner suggests you keep a log to determine what Goldie licks and when to determine if there’s any pattern. This information might help a veterinarian. Meanwhile, you can do no harm to enhance your dog’s enrichment. Feed Goldie from various Kong or food dispensing toys. You might even stuff food inside toys and then hide them around the house, so she can sniff them out. Also, take Goldie for daily walks on-leash, not only for exercise but also to sniff what’s new in the ‘hood. A compulsive behavior is a diagnosis of exclusion, meaning that after everything else is ruled out, it is considered. If this ends up being the diagnosis, a psycho-pharmaceutical might help, as can a referral to a veterinary behaviorist.

“We buy all the time!”

“LIFe oF PI’’: Director Ang Lee’s stunningly visual version of the Yann Martel novel earned him a recent Oscar nomination for the film, which also was in the best picture race. A young man (played in his teen years by Suraj Sharma) and a Bengal tiger become wary lifeboat mates after a shipwreck, then develop into partners in survival as their unique adventure evolves. Gerard Depardieu and Rafe Spall also appear, but Sharma, Lee and the visual-effects team clearly own the film. ***

“HITCHCoCK’’: Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren are typically credible as legendary “master of suspense’’ Alfred Hitchcock and

his wife, Alma, in director Sacha Gervasi’s docudrama, but the bigger interest is the movie’s detailing of the complications - financial and emotional - the famed filmmaker ran into while making his classic “Psycho.’’ Scarlett Johansson plays actress Janet Leigh, she of the shower scene. Jessica Biel appears as “Psycho’’ co-star Vera Miles, with Michael Wincott as killer Ed Gein, whom Hitchcock envisions himself engaging in conversation. ***

“RIse oF THe GUARdIANs’’: The title guardians are some of the most famous characters ever, who band together to save the world’s children from an overdose of fear aimed by the so-called Bogeyman (voice by Jude Law), in this enjoyable fantasy. Santa Claus, Jack Frost, the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy - respectively voiced by Alec Baldwin, Chris Pine, Hugh Jackman and Isla Fisher (“Wedding Crashers’’) - try to prevent the intended fright from taking hold. ***

“sMAsHed’’: A young couple, played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Emmy winner Aaron Paul (“Breaking Bad’’), struggle to get a handle on their drinking in this well-played drama honored at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. The wife has an especially hard time making the journey toward sobriety, which forces her to come to terms with personal and professional dilemmas. The impressive cast also includes Oscar winner Octavia Spencer (“The Help’’), Mary Kay Place, and spouses Megan Mullally (“Will & Grace’’) and Nick Offerman (“Parks and Recreation’’). DVD extras: “making-of ’’ documentary; audio commentary by Winstead and director and co-writer James Ponsoldt; deleted scenes; Toronto Film Festival footage. ***

“THIs MUsT Be THe PLACe’’: It didn’t get as much theatrical distribution as most of his films, but Sean Penn remains a singular acting force in this unusual mix of personal drama and revenge tale. The star plays a retired rock music legend who decides to patch things up with his father, but after traveling from Ireland to New York on that mission, he finds his dad has died ... before completing his targeting of a former Nazi war criminal, which the son then takes up. Frances McDormand, Judd Hirsch, Eve Hewson (daughter of U2’s Bono) and music icon David Byrne also star for director Paolo Sorrentino. ***

“THe MoB doCToR: THe CoMPLeTe seRIes’’: Rarely is an entire television show available on video before the end of the season in which it’s aired, but that’s an indication of the short life of this Fox drama about a surgeon (played by Jordana Spiro) indebted to a Chicago underworld leader (William Forsythe). That forces her to take on some assignments she’d prefer not to have. Zach Gilford (“Friday Night Lights’’) and Zjelko Ivanek also are in the regular cast. **

Dealing with SlanderWhat should you do if someone is angry with you? Have you ever had someone defame you, criticize you, or otherwise put you down behind your back? How did you deal with it? Perhaps they posted something negative on Facebook or Twitter or tried to assassinate your character via their blog or some online website. Maybe they used passive-aggressive tactics at your workplace, school or church, causing politics and division within an otherwise harmonious environment. Whatever the situation, I want to encourage you - before you respond - to consider whether it’s worth confronting the person spewing the venom. Does this person’s character lend any credibility to what they’re saying? Although some folks enjoy juicy gossip, most know whose words can be trusted and whose should be taken with a grain of salt. Sometimes addressing a situation affords it a dignity it doesn’t deserve. It may be best to just walk away and trust that people are going to see the gossip for what it is. For those times where you must step up and defend yourself, may I encourage you to NEVER do it via email or text? The best way to address any conflict is to go to the person - calmly - and confront them face-to-face in a humble and gentle manner. People are far more reasonable and less likely to engage in sensational nonsense when they have to look their target in the eye. Although difficult, this is the best method to confront slander. If you have to, bring a second or third person

with you - but not at first. Otherwise, this may be seen as intimidation and cause the situation to escalate instead of defusing it. If you absolutely cannot confront someone in person, the next best response is a written letter (not an email, but a well-thought-out physical letter). Unlike a personal confrontation, a letter’s tone could be more easily controlled, even purposefully made devoid of emotion. However, there is no predicting the reader’s mood when the envelope arrives. Even humble attempts by the writer can be misunderstood thereby creating further and escalating slander by the reader. Not to mention it can take

forever to formulate what you perceive as the perfect letter and can end up

granting even more power to the very person who is defaming

you. Regardless of how you address conflict, it’s never fun. I hope this week’s Tip

will help you navigate the path of least resistance, so you

can return as quickly as possible to the harmonious environment

you previously enjoyed.

Small changes lead to big energy savings(NC)—Every day non-profit organizations make a difference in their communities – and often just the smallest actions can have a positive impact. When it comes to energy efficiency, the same principle can be applied. Small changes, from turning down the thermostat slightly in the winter, to using energy-efficient light bulbs, can lead to big savings.

Recently, Direct Energy launched a grant program offering up to $100,000 to support non-profits. The goal was to decrease their energy use in order to have more funds to continue good work in the community. The program, called Reduce Your Use For Good, asks non-profit organizations to submit a brief, two-minute video explaining how they will use a $2,500 grant to reduce energy consumption.

All Canadians, whether at home or work, can reduce their own consumption with a few simple steps, such as:

• Turn off the heat in unused rooms and shut the doors.• Repair dripping hot water taps immediately.• Replace old appliances with energy-efficient models.• Unplug electronics when not in use.• Replace furnace filters regularly and avoid letting them get too dirty.

Additional energy saving tips and grant program information is available at www.reduceyouruseforgood.com.
