A wee boy gets in a big mess in this funny story brimming with local flavour
The Fourth Bonniest Baby in Dundee
STORY BY MICHELLE SLOANILLUSTRATED BY KASIA MATYJASZEK
The contest for the Bonniest Baby in Dundee is here, and one very grubby baby brother is scrubbed, dressed, combed and taken by his mum and big sister to charm the judges.
But on the way – oh no! – the bus breaks down... they’ll have to get a wriggle on! It starts to rain and they splish and splash through puddles. By the time they arrive, their bonnie baby is sticky, claggie and clarty. His chances of winning are dashed – especially when he blows a raspberry in the judge’s face. Or are they...?
Hilariously and lovingly recounted in lively, bouncing rhyme from the point of view of the baby’s big sister, this cheeky picture book will have mums, dads and kids chortling every time. With bright fun illustrations and recognisable scenes of Dundee, it is brimming with local flavour.
Michelle Sloan lives with her family in sunny Broughty Ferry near Dundee. She trained as a primary school teacher. The Fourth Bonniest Baby in Dundee is her first published book.
Kasia Matyjaszek lives in Edinburgh. She has worked on a variety of picture books, teaches illustration at the University of Edinburgh, and leads creative workshops for young children.

Burns re-imagined for young children with heart-warming illustrations
Robert Burns was born on 25 January 1759 in the village of Alloway near Ayr. Famously considered Scotland’s national bard, Burns Night is celebrated every year across Scotland and beyond on his birthday.
Ruchi Mhasane has a masters degree in children’s book illustration from Cambridge School of Art. She currently lives in India, where she grew up.
Also illustrated by Ruchi Mhasane:
(See p. 14):
My Luve’s Like a Red, Red Rose
WORDS BY ROBERT BURNSILLUSTRATED BY RUCHI MHASANE
O my Luve’s like a red, red rose,That’s newly sprung in June;O my Luve’s like the melodieThat’s sweetly play’d in tune.
In this beautifully illustrated picture-book version of Burns’ classic poem, the lyrics have been re-imagined to explore the special love between parent and child. A mother and daughter feature in everyday scenes such as playing in a garden, splashing in the sea and going to nursery, each inspired by Burns’ eloquent words.
With delightful, heart-warming illustrations by Ruchi Mhasane, this expressive new picture book is the perfect way to share Burns with very young children. It is also an ideal Mother’s Day or Valentine’s Day gift.

STORIES BY DAVID MACPHAILILLUSTRATED BY RICHARD MORGAN

• Fully illustrated with at least 50 b/w illustrations per book

• All the laughs of Horrid Henry mixed with the awesome Viking-ness of How to Train Your Dragon
Prepare yourself for the wrath of the Norsemen! That is, if you don’t mind and it’s not too inconvenient...
Everyone knows Vikings are ruthless barbarians whose idea of a good time involves pillaging, plundering and feasting. But Thorfinn is no ordinary Viking! He is always polite and happily offers to wash the dirty dishes. Too bad his dad is Harald the Skull-Splitter, Village Chief and the roughest and toughest Viking of them all.
Thorfinn the Nicest Viking is a funny, illustrated, action-packed new series for young readers which bridges the gap between Horrid Henry and Diary of a Wimpy Kid, set in a world where manners mean nothing and politeness is pointless!

There was only one thing for it. Calum took three massive steps forward and threw himself head first at the ball. At full stretch, he nodded the ball goalwards. It flew across the diving keeper and into the back of the net!He lay for a second on the warm Astroturf smiling until a
shadow appeared over him.“I didn’t know you could head the ball!” Leo grinned down
at Calum with his arm outstretched.“I didn’t have much choice with a cross like that!” Calum
laughed.
Don’t miss a minute of the non-stop action as 10-year-old Calum Ferguson struggles to settle into a new town whilst fighting for his place on the school football team.

ShadowsmithROSS MACKENZIE
“Are you brave?”When the mysterious Amelia Pigeon turns up at Kirby’s bedroom window in the dead of night, this is the question she asks him — immediately before they tumble into a world of ancient malevolent spirits who have torn their way into Kirby’s quiet seaside village.
Kirby isn’t feeling brave at all. His mother is in a coma following a freak (or was it?) accident, and he’s hardly talking to his dad. He’s convinced a spider is spying on him, and now a weird girl in a yellow raincoat — who appears to be a powerful, evil-banishing Shadowsmith — is dragging him into unknown danger. How brave is he really?
Ross MacKenzie, author of award-winning The Nowhere Emporium, weaves a world of magic and adventure, which twists and turns magnificently and will keep thrilled young readers guessing right to the end.

Molly Drummond is cursed: whenever a dog barks, she turns into a hare — which can make life quite dangerous... So she does the sensible thing and attends a curse-lifting workshop, run by a local witch. There she meets other cursed creatures: Innes, a kelpie; Beth, a dryad; Atacama, a sphinx; and a toad. But should they work together to lift their various curses? Or are they better off on their own? And will the crow-man, who draws on the energy of curses, destroy their chance to live a normal life?
This is the dramatic first installment in the brand new, long-awaited Spellchasers trilogy. Lari Don has once again created a world of brilliant magic, dark danger and sparkling friendship which will enchant children of upper primary age.

Slugboy Saves the World
MARK A. SMITHThanks to an unfortunately tasty-looking radioactive garden slug, eleven-year-old Murdo McLeod is now the world’s worst superhero. His two powers are pretty unique: the first is sliding up walls. Quite slowly. The second is secreting slippery slime from his skin. (Yes, just as disgusting as it sounds.)
It’s a world where superhero competition is fierce, and Slugboy is so underrated he doesn’t even make the list when an evil mastermind devises a plan to capture all the other superheroes.
Now, Slugboy has to use his not-so-super and oh-so-gross abilities to free the other superheroes and save the world. Let’s hope he doesn’t slip up...

The Hill of the Red FoxALLAN CAMPBELL MCLEAN
It is the time of the Cold War. Soviet spies are feared, and secrets are traded. People disappear.
Thirteen-year-old Alasdair, living in London, knows nothing of this world. He can’t wait to start his long summer holiday on the Isle of Skye, away from his mother and aunt.
But things don’t go quite as planned. On the journey, a stranger gives him a mysterious note before jumping from the train. Worse still, he instantly mistrusts sinister Murdo Beaton, with whom he’s staying. Gradually adjusting to crofting life, Alasdair is not prepared for the web of danger and espionage that unfolds around him. Can he trust anyone?

Six Lives of Fankle the CatGEORGE MACKAY BROWN
When the shopkeeper gives Jenny a skinny, black kitten she has no idea who she has adopted. Fankle is no ordinary cat. The fiercely clever feline has lived six lives so far: lives of adventure, danger, fortune and poverty. He’s stared down angry pirates, started a blood feud, won a war, advised an empress and leapt onto the moon.
Fankle tells Jenny tales of his former lives – with the king of pirates, in ancient Egypt and even with the Empress of China. So what is he doing living in a crofter’s cottage in Orkney?
