Principal’s MessageDear Kendall Parents:

We are grateful for your participation in November’s parent-teacher conferences. Suggestions by affirmation from your survey feedback were reviewed by our leadership team and will assist us in maximizing our effectiveness.

On December 5th six Kendall staff members and PDAC (Parent Diversity Advisory Council) liaison, Mrs. Naseem Ghouse, will attend the second annual World Café experience held at Waubonsie Valley High School. Conversations and questions that matter about bridging academics and building community drives our effort in ensuring academic excellence for all. Parents, educators, administrators and PTA representatives will be in attendance and participate in this evening event.

I am excited to share that Kendall’s Specials Team including: Mr. Popovich, Mrs. Burck, Mrs. Bader Neczek and Mrs. Gutmann received a $1,500 grant from the Indian Prairie Education Foundation. The Specials Team wrote the grant as part of the application process for Artist in Residence, Ms. Amanda Crockett to perform at United and Unique on December 21 & 22. Please see additional information about this grant in this newsletter.

Many culturally significant celebrations and events occur during the fall and winter months. You are encouraged to share your family traditions with your child’s class. It enriches our school community to learn from one another and to celebrate our rich background experiences. Please contact your child’s teacher if you are interested.

Winter break will soon be upon us! May your families spend time reflecting on the many blessings of past, present and may you look toward the future with great hope.

PTA Presidents’ MessageDear Kendall Families:

It's hard to believe that 2011 is coming to an end. Thanks to everyone to who supported our PTA and worked so hard to make it a success. The PTA is looking forward to the many events we have planned for 2012....including our PTA Father/Son and Mother/Daughter events...details will be coming home soon!

Please join us on Dec. 14 for our PTA General Meeting at 7pm. We look forward to seeing you then. We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season and look forward to working together in 2012. If you should have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us.

Sincerely,Christine Henderson & Vicky ChowPTA Presidents

Winter Traffic Safety

Growing concerns have arisen with the safety of student dismissal and vehicular traffic. Our school provides two dismissal lines including a front and side car option. The safety plan for student arrival and dismissal, as well as crosswalk locations, was determined by the Naperville Police Department.

Kendall is also a school that has no buses. Our school dismisses over 500 children by car. That being said, we know that traffic congestion is a given, however safety still needs to be a priority. Practicing safe procedures is imperative for all of our children.

Thank you to our families who are utilizing our pick up lines and following Kendall’s procedures. If you are not using them, I encourage you to please do so for the following reasons:

• There are no parking zones both on Meadow Lake Drive and Pradel Drive in which people are parking. These parked cars block the visibility of our parents who are utilizing our pick up lines. This results in having to pull around parked cars and narrowing the streets for two way traffic.

• There are families parking on nearby streets and children are crossing in the middle of a street rather than an identified school crosswalk.

Please display a sign in the passenger window of your car identifying those children whom you are picking up.

Thank you for making a concerted effort to join our lines provided and supervised by Kendall Staff. Your continued support is appreciated.

When Sending Money to SchoolWhen sending money to school please make sure it is in an envelope marked with your child's name, class and what the money is for. Example: hot lunch, field trip, book order, chorus shirt, PTA enrichment, etc. Loose checks and money can easily get lost. Also, please make sure your child's name is in the memo section and your updated address and phone number appear on the check.

Thank You!

Thank you to everyone who participated in the "Pennies for Pies" Community Service Project. With all the change donated and pies that were purchased by Kendall families, we were able to donate 53 pies to Loaves & Fishes this year!!

Restaurant Fundraisers

Thank you to all the Kendall families who participated in our Jets and Wendys fundraising nights! Our school has raised almost $500 from the two events held in September and October, which is unprecedented and very much appreciated. We will have other nights with Jets and Wendys in the coming months. For the month of December, we are going to hold a fundraiser through Johnny's Red Hots at the location near 111th and Rt 59 by Caputos. They will contribute 15% of all our sales. The fundraising event will be held ALL DAY on Monday, December 19th from 11:00am - 9:00pm. When ordering, you will NOT be required to present a flyer for Kendall to get credit for the sale. So make sure you mention Kendall when you order and tell all your friends and neighbors to do the same.

Thanks again for supporting our past, and future, fundraising events!

Holiday Shoppe

A huge thank you to all the families who came out to support the annual Holiday Shoppe. There were lots of gifts purchased, and the children really enjoyed spending their money shopping for others! This event would not have been possible without all the wonderful volunteers: Donna Brock, Julie Fulgaro, Kimberly Karshen, Laurie Power, Karen Rush, Jennifer Sheriff, Mary Sorensen, Kelly Sweeney, Donna Tipton and all the kids who helped as well. Please continue to support our gracious vendors for your future needs (see next page). Because of them, our PTA earned a great deal of money on this event which ultimately goes to help support our students.

Kendall Grant RecipientsKendall School would like to congratulate our specials teachers, Angie Bader Neczek – Art, Andrea Burck – Music, Paul Popovich – PE and Pam Gutmann – LMC for writing and receiving an Indian Prairie Education Foundation grant titled United and Unique: Working Together to Learn.

The purpose of United and Unique is to build a sense of community for all students at Kendall Elementary. This opportunity will foster the sense that students are part of a larger community, but are still unique individuals. Kendall staff members acknowledge the diverse population in our community and want to provide children the opportunity to explore what makes each individual unique in a united community working together to learn. This annual event will expand on the 2010 inaugural concept, incorporating a different performance art each year (2010: storyteller, multi-cultural fine arts activities).

The goals for this grant include: develop self-awareness and self-management skills to achieve school and life success, use social-awareness and interpersonal skills to establish and maintain positive relationships, and demonstrate decision-making skills and responsible behaviors in personal, school, and community contexts.

Artist in Residence, Ms. Amanda Crockett, will introduce students to kinesthetic learning and storytelling through mime. Ms. Crockett will enhance the fine arts curriculum in theater and performance in a unique vehicle of expression. During her visit to Kendall she will meet with students in a workshop setting. The focus of these workshops will foster confidence building, kinesthetic learning and spatial awareness with all students and staff. Each grade level will have the opportunity to explore kinesthetic learning through interpretation and performance.

Ms. Crockett will demonstrate the connection between performing arts and literacy using mime and physical interpretation and addressing 21st century skills such as team building, working together and problem solving in a small-group setting. Learning outcomes for students will include: kinesthetic and intrapersonal learning, risk taking and perseverance.

Winter Greetings from the LMC! by Mrs. Gutmann, LMC Director

It’s time once again to catch you up on what’s going on in the Library Media Center (LMC).

Kin ConnectOur Kin Connect program connects materials from the LMC with the curricular focus in our Kindergarten classrooms. The program occurs monthly, and I would like to thank our two coordinators, Kelly Sweeney and Donna Tipton, for contacting Kindergarten parent volunteers to provide the activities for our students. Another thank you goes to all of the parent volunteers who volunteered to implement this program for our Kindergarten students.

The October focus for Kin Connect was Kindergarteners becoming new bookworms, and students heard the book Stella Louella’s Runaway Book by Lisa Campbell Ernst read aloud to them.

The November focus for this program was Thanksgiving. Students heard a funny story ,”An Alphabet Turkey” using every letter of the alphabet and then participated in their first cut and tell story entitled “The Pilgrims Find a Goblin.” Students listened to the story and followed directions to cut a piece of paper into a special shape that coordinated with the story.

The December program will use gingerbread as its theme. Students will hear the Hawaiian version of the Gingerbread Man called The Musubi Man. They will also participate in a Gingerbread Men fingerplay and complete a special glyph (pictograph) based on following directions.

“Carry Out a Good Book” Reading ProgramOur fall schoolwide reading program concluded in November. Each week students who met their reading goals returned a special topping cutout for our big wall display in the LMC. Students who reached their reading goals for all four weeks of the program qualified to receive a free ticket to one of four Chicago Wolves hockey games.

Illinois State Award Reading ProgramsThere are four state reading award programs in which Illinois students may participate. The Monarch Award program is for students in Kindergarten through 3rd grade. The Bluestem Award program is for students in 3rd grade through 5th grade. The Rebecca Caudill Young Readers’ Book Award program is for students in 4th grade through 8th grade. The Abe Lincoln Award program is for students in high school. These programs are all readers’ choice award programs which means participating students vote for their favorite books from the 2012 master lists. Kendall students’ votes are combined with those from the other Illinois students participating in the programs to determine the state winner for each program. Here are the links to the 2012 Master Lists for each program. Just click on the 2012 Master List link once you are on the award program page.Monarch Award: http://www.islma.org/monarch.htmBluestem Award: http://www.islma.org/Bluestem.htmRebecca Caudill Award: http://www.rcyrba.org/Abraham Lincoln Award: http://www.islma.org/lincoln.htm

LMC continued...

Accelerated ReaderKendall students in grades 2 through 5 are able to participate in the Accelerated Reader program. This program requires students to read selected books and take quizzes on them. Students accumulate points when passing the quizzes. Upon reaching certain point milestones, students qualify for AR rewards. The point milestones are: 5, 15, 25 and then 25-point increments to 300. From 300 points students may continue to accumulate points up to 500 points. At this milestone students will start again at zero. All AR points carry over each year so students do not have to start all over again until they reach 500 points.

There are two ways students can determine which LMC books are Accelerated Reader titles that have quizzes available. They may check the library shelves for books with orange spine label protectors or use Quizlist Interactive to search by reading level, author, title or subject. This website can also be found on the Kendall School webpage under Patriot Favorites or by using this link http://www.quizlist.net/(S(yf4gfde55u43djbg4y5mtcj2))/search.aspx?id=12341.

At the end of each quarter the student at each grade level (2nd through 5th for Q1) who has accumulated the most points during the quarter receives special recognition on our AR Stars bulletin board. For Quarter 1 these students are our AR Stars: Katherine Grawe (2S), Christopher Smith (3D), Jared Moye (4LS), and Hari Sridhara (5P) Congratulations to these AR Stars!

First graders were introduced to the Accelerated Reader program in November and will be included in our AR Stars for Quarter 2.

Information Literacy ClassesEach class meets with me once a week either in the LMC or the computer lab to address either library or technology skills. These skills are integrated as much as possible with the classroom curriculum. Recently these are some of the topics students have been addressing.Kindergarten: Monarch Award program introduction, Monarch read alouds, alphabet bingo and alphabet match in the computer lab and site word practice in the computer lab.First Grade: Monarch Award program introduction, Monarch read alouds, math enrichment and site word practice in the computer lab.Second Grade: Monarch Award program introduction, Monarch read alouds, math enrichment and site word practice in the computer lab.Third Grade: Monarch and Bluestem Award program introductions, survey on bullying and the completion of a fall poem template in the computer lab.Fourth Grade: Bluestem and Rebecca Caudill Award program introductions, survey on bullying in the computer lab, introduction to the Big 6 research model for body systems research, advance preparation and Skype event for author Laurel Snyder on November 18. Fifth Grade: Bluestem and Rebecca Caudill Award program introductions, survey on bullying and completion of Fall Senses template in the computer lab.

Page 11: Kendall Kaleidoscope

Page 11Kendall Kaleidoscope

LMC continued...

Students in grades 2 through 5 took a technology pre-assessment in the computer lab to see how much they know about using computers, Kendall’s online catalog and the research process (grades 4 & 5). They will repeat the assessment in late spring to check what they have learned.

Winter Schoolwide Reading ProgramComing in January, the LMC will sponsor a winter reading program where students can earn a voucher for a free Six Flags admission and a free ticket to a Kane County Cougars baseball game.
