April, 2017
From Our Pastor
T he Psalmist proclaims: "O give thanks to the Lord, for
he is good; his steadfast love en-dures forever!" Happy Eastertide! Christ is risen! He is risen in-deed! These are not only state-ments of faith and words of Scrip-ture, they are life changing ways
of being. Now more than any oth-er time of the year, we remember that we are resurrection people!
(Continued on page 2)
T hank you to our KPC Choir under the direction of Chuck

Love God... And Love Your Neighbor
T hank you to Nancy Dilling-ham for the wonder ful gift
of poetry and prayers which were an important part of our worship each week during Lent.
Our reality and the reality of the world changed forever on that first Easter morning. The empty tomb brought a fullness to life never before experienced in hu-man history. Let the choirs sing! Let the trumpet sound! Let our voices rise to the heavens in thanksgiving!
At the same time, we remember that we live in a fallen creation. All we need to do is watch the news on our televisions, read the daily paper or listen to the latest podcast about life in our present age to see the evil that transpires in this world.
How do we, as Christians, recon-cile these two opposites? What does it mean to live in a fallen world in light of the resurrection and promise of a new life in Christ Jesus? For many, this is not an easy task. Often our ex-citement gives way to a mundane reality thay confronts and chal-lenges our joy.
Perhaps, the answer to our ques-tion can be found in the life of Jesus. Read any of the four gos-pels and we find that Jesus lives in a similar paradox. The miracle gives way to the mundane and proclamation is often followed by questioning from his closest fol-lowers. Surely Jesus was frus-trated many times during his life. Despite the fact that our Lord knew that the kingdom of God was at hand, the routine of living forced its way in.
And his answer to the dilemma was one of refocusing his reality by finding his relationship with his father. Often Jesus would return to the wilderness for pray-er meditation and renewal. Let us follow in Christ's footsteps and do the same.

Lilies for the sanctuary to make it beautiful for Easter.
E aster Sunday began with our ‘Son Rise’ Service at 9:30
a.m. with 40 in attendance. A potluck breakfast followed. The Service included Rev. Smith and his helpers using beach balls to demonstrate ‘sharing the Love of God’.
A new Quaker worship group is meeting at Kenilworth
Church! Everyone is invited to join in the one-hour, open, and welcoming, 'unprogrammed' Meet-ing for Worship (based in ex-pectant silence, from which partic-ipants might speak from the si-lence, as moved by Spirit). All are welcome to this quiet period of reflection each Sunday evening at 5:00 p.m. What an exciting way to share our space.

I t's that time of year again! Time to get in the garden and get
growing. Thanks to our dear friends at Upchurch Greenhouses in Cherryville for providing us seed, for free! Volunteers from the Lenoir-Rhyne University Dietary program have cleared the beds and we just need to plant the seed. We are looking forward to providing the clients of Loving Food Re-sources with fresh produce again this year. Thanks to all who partic-ipate in this ministry! - Katie

KPC Participates in Work Day
O n March 25, Kenilworth Church teamed with members of the Venus Masonic Lodge (including Marvin Chambers, an esteemed
leader of the lodge) to clean out several rooms and also tear down and remove molded dry wall. The lodge was torched by arsonists a few years ago. After a morning of
hard work, the group was rewarded with lunch! Other work mornings will be planned there in the future.

Women’s Bible Study
T he Women’s Bible study group will meet again May 7 at 9:30 in the church parlor. We will be discussing chapter 8, “Who Is Jesus Ac-
cording to the Other Abrahamic Faiths?” Please also complete the work-sheet on p. 103. There are copies of the chapter and worksheet in the church office on top of the file cabinet for those who need them.
We will also plan for the worship service the women will be leading on June 4. All women are invited to participate in the liturgy that day. Join us May 7 to share your ideas!
At its April meeting, the session voted to re-institute a Presbyterian Wom-en’s group at Kenilworth. In doing so, we join more than 300,000 women in the PCUSA who gather for study, support and service. Tina Joyner, moderator of the PW in our presbytery, will tell us more about this excit-ing venture in at our May meeting. - Edna
T hank you for sending me to Selma. I have dreamed of
attending the Bridge Crossing Ju-bilee in Selma for several years but to attend Kinging Nonviolence training with Dr. Bernard LaFa-yettte (pictured) was a life goal! I spent an intense 5 days studying the methodology of Dr. King and earned my certification as a Kingi-an Nonviolence instructor. I look forward to sharing the principles of waging peace with you. It is easy to be disheartened by events in our world but King taught us that nonviolence is for the coura-geous and also that the arc of the moral universe bends towards jus-tice. Stay committed to peace and stay committed to justice!
