Kenmore and the Town of Tonawanda have a long history of “firsts.” Tonawanda pioneered the concept of the suburban village, successfully combining an industrial base and a thriving residential community. Kenmore, the dream of Louis Phillip Adolph Eberhardt, was one of our country’s first planned bedroom communities — the clean, quiet site of upscale homes on tree-lined streets.
From the late 19th century to today, both of these communities have offered unique lifestyle opportunities for families and individuals. Public services such as education, transportation and recreation are readily accessible, of high quality and affordable. The atmosphere is one of friendly neighbors and helpful business partners who stand ready to welcome newcomers to their community.
Kenmore and the Town of Tonawanda are the first northern suburbs outside of the city of Buffalo. They are located within 25 miles of the majestic cascades of Niagara Falls. There are plenty of highways and main streets available to get you to a host of exciting destinations within 20 minutes. Favorite activities of Ken-Ton residents include boating on the Niagara River; fishing in Lake Erie; and camping, skiing or sledding in the Southern Tier region of New York State — just to name a few.
Our Metro bus system offers public transportation to downtown Buffalo and surrounding areas.
HSBC Arena hosts events such as Buffalo Sabres Hockey, and national concert tours all year long.
Ken-Ton is neighbor to the renowned Albright Knox Art Gallery, Kleihans’s Music Hall and Shea’s Performing Arts Theatre, all located in nearby Buffalo. The City of Toronto in Ontario, Canada, is also only a short 90-minute drive away.
Ken-Ton is home to community-orientated festivals such as Kenmore Week and Brighton Field Days, both bringing an old-fashioned carnival appeal to residents with food, fun and games for all ages. The Memorial Day Parade, Classic Car show and 4th of July Fireworks display add more excitement to the mix.
The Chamber puts on Showcase every May, which is an annual tradeshow that highlights local businesses, services, talent and restaurants within the town.
The Village of Kenmore prides itself on its annual Garden Walk that spotlights the landscaping creativity of homeowners throughout the village streets.
Saturdays feature a farmers market, held on the village green throughout the summer. Come fall, the changing leaves provide a glorious backdrop to the Halloween celebration held at the Kenmore Fire Department for local youngsters. Winter brings Santa’s arrival in front of the Municipal Building and the Holiday Sing-a-Long and Bon Fire at Crosby Field, in addition to the Town’s annual Winterfest Weekend celebration in January.
The greater Buffalo area is known for its network of Olmsted Parks, and Kenmore and the Town of Tonawanda are part of the tradition. From small, neighborhood parks that include swimming pools, baseball diamonds and picnic areas to large areas for biking, cross-country skiing and jogging alongside scenic creeks and canals, this area offers the best in parkside pleasures. Golfers will find two challenging public courses, Sheridan and Brighton Parks, known as the best in the area.
During the winter, hockey takes center stage at the Lincoln and Brighton arenas. Golf addicts can practice their obsession throughout the winter at the Paddock Chevrolet Golf Dome, the largest of its kind in the northeast.
Senior citizens have their choice of four seniors facilities offering stimulating activities and companionship. The Aquatic and Fitness Center also provides a place to exercise and classes geared to every age level.
The western New York area is home to multinational corporations such as 3M; Goodyear-Dunlop; Dupont; Genral Motors; Praxair, Inc.; and NOCO Energy Corp. However, it continues to evolve, grow and develop in other industries such as biotechnology and healthcare. Colvin Woods Business Park and Riverview Commerce Park represent two new additions to the business landscape, as local universities and colleges continue to produce an educated workforce, known for its productivity and work ethic.
Delaware Avenue in the Village of Kenmore is lined with long-standing storefronts like Watson’s Chocolates; Hofert Jewelers; Mike’s Subs; and a variety of charming boutiques, salons and eateries.
The Ken-Ton Chamber supports all businesses, from large industry to small family-owned businesses and everything in between, by offering business training seminars and luncheons, group discount benefits and networking opportunities to its members.
The town and village have separate governments that are housed within the Municipal Building at the southern end of Kenmore.
The village has a mayor, town clerk and board of trustees. The Town Board, as well as several departments, operates under the control of the Town Supervisor. Property taxes are among the lowest in the western New York area, and the services can’t be beat. The streets and sanitation departments excel at keeping
our town well manicured throughout every season. Even the challenging task of snow removal during the winter months is conquered with ease.
Each has their own police department and volunteer fire departments equipped with the latest cutting-edge technology, resulting in safer neighborhoods and swift response time in the event of an emergency.
Boasting some of the most affordable housing in the country, Kenmore’s quaint village features tree-lined streets and a stunning architectural design from the 1800s and early 1900s. Most two-story homes in the village feature gorgeous leaded and stained glass windows, natural hardwood accents and floors, and welcoming front porches that are perfect for hosting guests on a delightful summer evening.
The Town of Tonawanda offers newer structures among many established ranch and split-level style homes to accommodate growing families. New developments along the waterfront, Ellicott Creek and surrounding areas offer an even greater variety of modern housing options including town houses, condos, private communities and senior complexes.
Kenmore and the town are home to more than 40 churches and temples of various denominations, including Catholic, Lutheran, Episcopalian, and conservative and reformed Jewish congregations. Many, particularly Catholic parishes, are in picturesque neighborhoods and within walking distance of members’ homes.
Often, our places of worship provide much more than spiritual support; they supply a social outlet, are the base for private schooling and feature community services in their outreach programs.
Additionally, Tonawanda is home to the scenic Elmlawn Cemetery, a beautiful area characterized by well-manicured grass, shady trees, granite aspects and up-kept flower beds. Currently, more than 100 acres are developed, with another 45 acres available for future expansion.
