Greetings:

My name is Kenneth Rubio and I am currently a fifth year Architecture student at Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia. As a soon to be graduate, I would like to begin to put my education to work. In order to strengthen my knowledge interning at an architectural firm is the ideal way to further supplement my education with a real world experience.

Upon graduating in May I seek to take the next step my path to becoming a licensed architect through internship at your architecture firm. I’m looking to either work full time as an intern. I am not seeking huge monetary compensation. Instead, I seek under-standing and insight into my future career. Academic studies can only teach me so much; I view the opportunity of working in an architecture office as a vital part of my continuing education and intend to treat it as such.

Thank you for your consideration. Please find my résumé on the next page and se-lected work, which provides complete details of my qualifications. Also, feel free to contact me at (804) 245-2714 or [email protected] for any follow up purposes. I appreciate your consideration and look forward to further discussing any architectural internship opportunities with you.

Sincerely Yours,

Kenneth A. Rubio

Phoebus Live-Work Units Hampton [VA]

The site is nestled in between two buildings in the main business sector of the historic neighbor-hood of Phoebus. The Site called for three live work apartments, with businesses at street level and residential above.

— Project Completed

Phoebus is a historic neighborhood in the City of Hampton that was once a bustling place for soldiers that were stationed at nearby Fort Monroe.

Our first project of the second semester was to design a Live-Work building to revitalize the area by bringing business and residents to the once busy Mallory Street district. The building was take into consideration the existing building typology of the neighbor-hood as well as designing an environmen-tally friendly building, incorporating natu-ral lighting, passive heating and cooling strategies. The project was about achieving appropriate massing and envelope design while designing a building that fit within

the urban context of neighborhood.

This was an individual project where the final product was a series of 20” x 30” presentation boards that all drawings were hand drawn and rendered by pencil and ink then scanned into the computer for final presentation.

Retail Alliance Headquaters Norfolk [VA]

Site located on Norfolk’s main street in the Downtown section of the city. The site current use is a pay-per-use parking lot between the Historic James Madison Hotel and Hofhiemer Department Store. The program called for ten retail stores on the ground level, the Retail Alliance offices above, and an Executive penthouse suite on the top level.

— Project Completed

Our first project of third year was to design a new headquarters for Retail Alliance in historic Downtown Norfolk. The site was infill lot inbetween the historic James Madi-son Hotel and the Former Hoffheimer’s De-partment Store on Granby Street. The site’s location was located within historic district zoning guidelines that we needed to follow by in the design of the building. The pro-gram called ten retail shops on the ground level of the building, the operating offices for Retail Alliance, and an executive pent-house suite on the top level of the building.

The Building needed to be a brick façade and at least 65 percent minimum opening at street level.

The final product needed to be produced in Revit and was required to be presented on one board that was presented to mem-bers of retail alliance and the City of Nor-folk Design Review Board.

In 1999 the city of Virginia Beach and Norfolk began studies along HRT for a new means of mass transit to serve the area the initial pro-posal called for a line that would stretch from Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk to the Oceanfront in Virginia Beach. Once the City of Virginia Beach pulled out of the project the city of Norfolk continued moving forward and one of the stops would be at Civic Plaza at City Hall.

As part of the design of a new station at Civic Plaza I decided to also recognize a part of the

city’s history. In 1959, seventeen students of Black students stood up against a city, a school system, a way of correcting an injustice, of being denied an education the same as their white counterparts. A memorial recognizing the name of the students who stood up to the massive resistance movement would be etched into the glass of the civic plaza station.

Government Center Station Norfolk [VA]

The City of Norfolk is building a new light rail project that would extend 7.4 mi (11.9 km) from Eastern Virginia Medical School to Newtown Road at the Norfolk-Virginia Beach municipal border. Civic Plaza Station is located at the center of Norfolk’s government operations and predicted to be one of the busiest stations.

Place De L’Equerre Toulon [FRANCE]Located on the French Riviera between the cities of Marseille and Nice is a medium sized naval city of Toulon. The city of Toulon like many French city’s has a vieille ville (English: old town) which is located just north of the harbour. On the southwest edge of the vielle ville is Place de L’Equerre (English: Square of Right Angles).

— Project Completed

In the summer after my third year I had the opportunity to travel to France studying Archi-tecture, Urbanism, Language and Culture with Hampton University’s Study Abroad Program and in collaboration with The Marilyn and Ray Gindroz Foundation who sponsored the eye opening experience.

During the Summer Intensive semester I spent time travelling to various cities throughout France studying the architecture and urban spaces of Arles, Avignon, Marseille, Nimes, and Paris. Finally reaching our project site on

the southwestern edge of “La vieille ville de Tou-lon” near the French Naval Base. We began the studio researching the area learning the full history of the area collecting information talk-ing with local residents and city officials about the site “Place de L’Equerre.” The Square of Right Angles as is translated in English was an unfinished project that was abandoned by the city in attempt to revitalize the area. Our Project was to pick where the city left off by designing a master plan for the area while also adding commercial and residential units to bring life back to the area.

The project was a semester long class project that each member of the class had an essential role in producing the master plan for “La Place De L’Equrre” that was presented to the City of Toulon at the end of the semester. The team-work effort made the production of the master plan book very efficient; I was responsible for producing computer renderings site sections, and final book layout.

— Project Completed

The 2011 Solar Decathlon was the first ever entry for Team Tidewater which was comprised of two universities Hampton University and Old Dominion University. The Unit 6 was en-visioned to provide a multi-family, affordable, and sustainable housing for the City of Norfolk. In Norfolk, they are many “Six Pack” multi-fami-ly buildings throughout the city and the concept for team tidewater’s design was to provide the most sustainable product conceivable. The unit would in a city that reduces the reliance on the automobile and promotes a healthier en-vironment by encouraging inhabitants to walk within a community were all visions that we saw as a response to sustainable living. Due to competition rules the design needed to be a single-family unit for the solar decathlon but that did not deter our teams mission of creating a multi-family housing unit. Our services were split and we had one team, work on the single unit that became the prototype for out multi-family building.

For the competition, we needed to design and build an energy-efficient home that could be powered by solar energy. The competition took place in West Potomac Park, Washington D.C. from September 22 to October 2, 2011. This was an excellent learning experience that edu-cated me on how various disciplines need to work together in order to produce one product and must be on the same page in order to meet deadlines. 4

The Solar Six Pack: Reviving a vernacular housing type for the twenty first century. Project Principles:

Design, development and construction of a multi-family building project seeking to demonstrate that:

-Sharing infrastructure, technology and land costs can bring residential units netting low to zero energy use from non-renewable resources to market affordably;-Buildings powered by alternative energies need not wear their hardware aggressively but can be designed to fit seamlessly into historic center city neighborhoods;-True long-term sustainable development lies in careful nurturing of livable, walkable center city neighborhoods;-Leveraging the resources generated by and harnessing the energy of Solar Decathlon competition can generate academic and practical pay-offs beyond the competitions single family house; and that-Students faced with the opportunity to deepen their understanding of how the development and building process works on a sound project of their own design will seize it and be significantly enriched in their academic preparation to become architects

2012 Virginia Prize Cape Hatteras [NC]

Every year, the Virginia Society AIA sponsors a design charrette competition, known as the Virginia Prize. The Competition is between all Virginia schools of architecture, the prompt becomes available on the Friday at 5pm and all students must submit their individual entries by Monday at 9am. The entry is a single 20” x 30” board which best displays our proposal for the given prompt. — Project Completed

The 2012 edition of the Virginia Prize was Tem-porary Permanence: Emergency Housing on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The Prompt called for the designing of a semi-permenent home on the outer banks where residents could seek refuge in the event of a catastrophic disas-ter (e.g. Hurricanes) such as the one that struck the east coast in 2011 Hurricane Irene. Irene left the Cape Hatteras area stranded for rough-ly six weeks as the main vehicle access North Carolina Highway 12 was disconnected, prompting residents to drive down the beach or use in land sand trails.

We were asked to design a small home of no more than 600 square feet, that could be used as an emergency shelter after hurricanes or major storms that occur in the Cape Hat-teras area. The home should be able to house a family of four and ideally arranged to form an embryo of a community. I decided that the best place for “The Inundation Project” would be just south of Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. The small community would be able to used year for other events and small gatherings by locals but when disaster strikes the residents will be able to reside here in a more resilient home.
