The Olympics did not take place

in 1940 and 1944 because of

World War 2

Did you know?

The Olympic Torch Relay There is one very amazing thing that made this Olympics so great.

That was how patriotic Canadians were. What made Canadians so

patriotic was how the Olympic torch went all across Canada. It made

all Canadians become a part of the Olympic games. The Torch

made an amazing journey over 1,000 communities across Canada

starting in Victoria and ending in Vancouver.

This video is about the

Torch going across

Canada.

The lead up problems

There were many problems before the games, some of the many

problems were:

• Almost 30,000 spectators got turned away from Cypress to view the

sports up there because the standing room was unsafe because of

too much water.

• It was raining, not snowing at Cypress Mountain so they had to

import snow from other mountains

• Luger Nodar Kumaritashvili died after crashing at the Whistler

bobsled track just before the opening ceremonies

• During the opening ceremonies one of the four pillars in the Olympic

cauldron failed to rise

• This one isn’t really a problem for the Olympics but for Canadian

fans, Canada had never won a gold medal at the Olympics in

Canada.

The Opening Ceromonies

The opening ceremonies in the Vancouver

2010 games were amazing. Many people

said the ceremonies would be one of the

worst ceremonies ever, but I don’t agree

Page 8: Kenny vancouver 2010 olympic

The Olympics weren’t starting out well for Canadians or athletes of Canada. Heavy

rain continued on Cypress and was making the events miserable. In the first day no

Canadian had got gold. Many fans thought the curse on Canadians Olympians at

home will continue ( a Canadian Olympic competitor has never won a gold on home

soil). Jennifer Heal, didn’t even succeed to win gold in the Olympics and she was

said to be Canada’s 2nd biggest chance to win gold beside the Canadian hockey

team. But it all turned around for Canadian’s when something amazing happened the

next day of the Olympics.

Page 9: Kenny vancouver 2010 olympic

The other 13

After that Canadian athletes started

winning many gold medals. In total

Canadian athletes won 14 gold medals

setting a record for the most gold medals

won in the Olympic games. In the next

slides I will show you the many gold

medals Canadians have won.

Joannie Rochette

During the Olympics Joannie Rochette did something very

brave. Two days before the Figure Skating competition her

mother died in Vancouver General Hospital from a heart

attack. But Joannie Rochette didn’t take it like most people

would. She was sad, but instead of sitting around being sad

she competed in the Figure Skating Competition.
