Pearson’s hosted a KENO® party in December of 2015, right before the holidays. Jessie cooked a lot of delicious food, from home-baked pies and cookies to sausages and burgers. Terri’s and Nik’s excitement for the game and the winning players still drives sales. Their customers have been playing with enthusiasm ever since. In fact, in January, sales were up 198 percent! Incredible! Customers had such a great time that Pearson’s has planned another KENO® party for May 6.
Pearson’s Market DoverPearson’s started selling KENO® in the fall of 2014. They compete with a large retail-chain convenience store / gas station right across the street. They show great success for their efforts. The customer-driven family atmosphere in this store is thanks to Nikhil (owner), Terri and Jessie. The two women, Terri and Jessie, are well-known community locals who greet their customers by first name and are welcomed the same way. Terri’s employment started approximately 15 years ago, and she has been there through two different owners. Jessie has been working at Pearson’s for four years.

Naamans Beverage WilmingtonLeo Mozzoni, owner of Naamans Beverage, just celebrated 40 years as a Lottery Retailer. In November 2014, he added KENO® to his line of Lottery products. Since then, Naamans Beverage has consistently been one of our top KENO® Retailers in the state. Leo and his staff bring a level of excitement and knowledge that is hard to match. They use the monthly customer promotions as a way to get new players interested in purchasing a KENO® ticket. His employees have a great relationship with the customers—and use that relationship to promote KENO®.
TOP KENO LOCATIONSKYWAY ONE added KENO® to its Lottery menu on Feb. 8, and they have undoubtedly had one of the most successful launches to date. They produced over $23,000 in KENO® sales their first month—in only three weeks. So far in March, they are averaging almost $14,000 a week!
KEY KENO PROMOTERS MEET DANNY. He plays KENO® almost every day at the Stop & Shop on White Oak Road in Dover. On several occasions I have walked into the store on a routine visit and found him conversing with fellow customers, showing them how to play and win KENO®. He prefers to play the two spot but explains the prize tier fluently. He folds most of his winnings back into more KENO® and scratch-offs. He has been very lucky in both and says he is still ahead of the game. Lots of winning circles and posted Lottery tickets are hung with his name on them.
Offer KENO® to patrons waiting to be seated. Offer the host or hostess a spiff for getting customers to play.
Ask your employees to tell customers about KENO®—how to play and win. Take advantage of the slower pace before the busy season comes and train your staff in Lottery or call the Lottery Office and ask about refresher training for staff. Through a knowledgeable staff, you will build confidence and loyalty with your customers, and you’ll set your store apart from the competition.
Give employees a KENO® wallet of coupons that they can use throughout the day. Print them out on business cards and have employees offer them to customers for a free play. Customers will appreciate the gesture, and if they win, the rewards are twofold for your business.
*Thank you, Raul Patel from Five Points Deli, for this suggestion. He uses his KENO® wallet at his liquor store, which is next door to the deli. He sends his customers over to his deli to play. This has improved his sales by several hundred dollars a week.
Liquor stores and tobacco locations card customers for proof of age. After checking the birth date, suggest that the customer play those numbers in KENO®. Or their DL number.
When your customers make a KENO® ticket purchase, suggest they add a bonus to it. If they have already purchased a bonus ticket, suggest they play consecutive games—especially when they have chosen their own numbers. Bonus and Consecutive Draw are great tools to increase your sales.
