School Council UpdateDear parents and carers

As you may know, Kensington Public School has always had astrong School Council that works behind the scenes to supportour school community and teaching staff. This year howeverhas been one of change, embracing new ways of doing thingswithin the confines of the regulations that govern the schoolcommunity. One of those adaptations in the absence of our2019/20 AGM has been to maintain the School Councilrepresentatives as they stand until the 2021 AGM, to ensure the

support that the school council provides could continue. Thisapproach is consistent with the guidelines put forward by theNSW P&C Association.

Further, due the NSW Public Health and Department ofEducation mandates in the current health crisis, the SchoolCouncil has only held 2 meetings to date. It is our hope thatwe will be able to have 3 further meetings before year end.Another change that we have adopted is the way in which theminutes of the School Council meetings which highlight thework the School Council supports, are delivered. Customarilythe minutes have been available for review onsite and byrequest as normal. However, due to the ongoing healthrestrictions , to ensure the minutes are readily available, a copycan be accessed either through direct request to the Schooland a copy sent to your email address, or the minutes onceformally accepted are available online through the KPS website(along with other key information about the Council).

Finally, as the School Council is currently able to resume andcontinue its work, if you have something you consider isimportant to the KPS School community, please email theSchool directly and mark your correspondence to the attentionof the School Council President.

We thank you for your continued engagement and support.

Suzanne CastellasSchool Council President

School Council Minutes

Nationally Consistent Collection of DataThe Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on SchoolStudents with Disability (NCCD) is an annual processparticipated in by all Australian schools across the country. Theaim of this process is to provide the Australian Governmentwith consistent information about the number of students withdisability in Australian schools and the type of adjustmentsthey require in order to access and participate in education onthe same basis as other students. The NCCD is used by the

Australian Government to inform funding for schools, known asthe ‘student with disability loading’.

If you are a parent, guardian or carer of a child with disabilitywho requires ongoing adjustments at school, a teacher oranother school staff member will consult with you to understandyour child’s needs. This collaborative approach ensures themost appropriate adjustments are chosen to support yourchild’s learning and participation at school. In some cases, anindividual education plan (IEP) or personal learning plan (PLP)may be developed to document specific educational goals andto review your child’s progress over time.

Your child will be included in the NCCD if they require ongoingadjustments at school due to a disability as defined by theDisability Discrimination Act 1992 This link will open in a newwindow (the DDA). This is a very broad definition of disability, which includes physical and intellectual disabilities, learningdisorders such as dyslexia and dysgraphia, and mental healthconditions such as anxiety and depression.

If your child has a disability, your child’s school will provideinformation about them for the NCCD, including:

The information collected by schools for the NCCD willultimately be provided to the Australian GovernmentDepartment of Education and Training. In some cases thiswill involve the school passing the information directly to theDepartment. In other cases the school will provide it to its stateor territory government agency (or other relevant body) in thefirst instance, and that agency will then provide the informationto the Department.

While it is not possible for schools or families to ‘opt out’of the NCCD, the privacy and confidentiality of all studentsand their families is treated with utmost importance. Data iscollected within each school, and personal details, such asstudent names and other identifying information, are notprovided to local or federal education authorities.

For further information please refer to the attached NCCD factsheet for parents, guardians and carers.

Mishaal Gives Back!Kids Giving Back is a charity whose mission is to create thenext Generation of Generosity. Their programs are delivered forchildren 6-18 years old and their families and offer opportunitiesto assist vulnerable people in the community.

We recently received a letter from Robyn Monro Miller the CEOof Kids Giving Back, to acknowledge the volunteer efforts ofMishaal (6/5D) who gave up her time during the July schoolholidays and weekends to undertake a range of activities toassist and support vulnerable people including the homelessand those that are socially isolated.

The team were most impressed by the strong work ethicdisplayed by Mishaal, who undertook such tasks as resourcedevelopment, food preparation and letter writing.

We are very proud to see students like Mishaal showing ourschool value of Community outside of school.
