This re-birth is by courtesy of the weekend holiday specialists ISLE OF WIGHT TOURS
of Sandown on the Isle of Wight, in conjunction with the management of the Holiday Vil-
lage. This first weekend of the new venture was on the weekend of 26/27th and 28th of
March.
Several Kent Clubs and players will have fond memories of the annual early Spring Petan-
que weekends at Bracklesham Bay, covering a period of around 18 years. In days of old
there would be over 100 teams of triples playing in competitions on both the Saturday’s
and Sunday’s, travelling from far afield, from the Midlands, Poole, Jersey, Gurnsey, Kent,
London and Sussex. A team of Petanque organisers provided the efficient control of the
competitions and a goodly stock of boule and Petanque equipment was also on sale.
The underlining theme for the weekends was always “excellent value for money”, and the
enthusiastic staff of South Downs who always did their best to make a good weekend for
the guests. The entertainment was always very good and in the early days continued on
until the early hours.
However gradually over the years the numbers of players attending the Bracklesham
weekend gradually dropped, with a few Kent Clubs keeping up their support, namely Seal
PC, Beauty of Bath P.C., Lordswood P.C. and Hartley Country Club P.C. The weekend in it’s
old form ended in 2008, due to the lack of support, a shame as the management of
Southdown’s were always generous in providing trophies and cash prizes for the competi-
tions.

days who in turn were sold to the pre-

VILLAGES, who own 4 other holiday vil-
lages in Norfolk.

most parts, and are not always to the
liking of all players, however if you take
the view that Petanque can be, and is
played on a variety of different types
of surfaces, then they are OK.

Friday 26th March through Monday 29th We thought we should “test the waters” and see if the “weekend” was as good as it used to be. So: Mick Joyce, Terry Clarke, Babs Waters-Newman, Tracey Dray, Paul and Sheena Bishenden set off on the Friday by car (even though travel by coach was included in the price) as we all had to return on the Sunday for work commitments the next day. Having met for lunch at The Coach and Horses at Cowfold we set off for East Wittering (West Sussex) & Bracklesham Bay, in a mixture of short showers (over by the beginning of the afternoon), sunshine and a nippy little breeze. Having booked in, we found the chalets were warm, comfortable and convenient to the pistes which were situated in their usual place, in the car park! The line dancers also in residence were very evident having put their names on all the tables but one (does that remind you of a similar activity?) in the main hall! Undaunted, after having a walk to the beach (boy, was it breezy!) we set off to the restaurant for our evening meal, entertainment and - yes - bingo (what would Bracklesham be like without a game of bingo?)! The food was plentiful and, I have to admit, better than it has been in the past. We were in “Gerry’s Bar” for the evening, having left the line dancers to it in the main hall, where we all really enjoyed the bingo! Babs won a line winning the total sum of £1.35 and Tracey won the second house winning £21! The evening’s entertainment was a singer who wasn’t too bad. 54 players registered. There were teams from Hartley, Croydon, the Isle of Wight and of course, the Beauty of Bath from Sittingbourne. We all booked in that evening ready for a day’s Petanque in the morning. Eighteen teams registered to play. Babs, Mick and Terry registered as “Double Rum and Two Ciders” and Paul, Tracey and I as “The Muppets” (and we were, or at least, I (Sheena) was!). The next day, after a hearty breakfast and weather being kind, we ventured out onto the pistes and re-ceived our cards telling us exactly who we were playing that morning - regardless of whether we won or lost. It was really well organised and ran extremely smoothly. We had to play on the whistle and stop an hour later on another whistle whether you had finished play or not. The score stood at the finish of the end on the whistle. It worked very well and the only waiting was if you had finished your game, but at least you knew exactly when you would start your next game and could nip off for a cup of coffee if you had time! You also knew exactly who you were playing next and everyone was provided with a la-bel stating your name and team name so there was no hunting around for your opposition. It ran like clockwork. After lunch, the teams were given their list of matches having split us up into Cup, Plate and Consolage. In the end, Babs, Mick and Terry came away as Plate Runners Up! We were really thrilled about this! Saturday evening’s entertainment was good again - Terry and Tracey winning at bingo again! The main entertainment was a comedian/singer - and ‘Lola’ the camp cat who strolled into the bar and sat herself on stage while the performers were trying to do their act! Sunday dawned dry but overcast with the forecast promising heavy rain for the afternoon. It was to be a melee, but because of the bad weather forecast and coach trips planned for the afternoon, many de-cided to only play in the morning only. Those who were playing all day were put into a triples competi-tion and those playing in the morning were put into a doubles competition. As we unfortunately had to return home that afternoon we decided to play the morning only. Mick had to pull out because of his arm/shoulder problem but came along to the pistes to support. We received our cards for the morning’s play - again telling us who we were playing and on the whistle, we were off! Paul was playing with Mick from the Isle of Wight, Tracey with Yvonne from the Isle of Wight, Terry with (I can’t remember their name) from the Isle of Wight and Babs and Sheena were drawn together! We had a smashing morning’s play and the weather was really kind to us - not a rain-drop in sight! Tracey and her partner won the morning’s play with Paul coming third, Sheena and Babs fourth and Terry fifth. All in all it was a very good weekend and well worth going. The accommodation, food and entertain-ment were good and the competition was excellently organised. Recommended for next year!

And yet another report of the weekend……. There were sadly only 18 teams, and Hartley P.C. had eight of those. However the new guy who ran the competitions did it very well. The weather was pretty good with no rain to speak of, food was fine, accommodation smartened up as was the dining room. We were kept apart from the line-dancers who weren't allowed (or told about) to play bingo or to visit the cabaret entertainment in the small function room, all three entertainers were good in their different ways. “Grand Prix Series” Triples Competitions were run sepa-rately at the same Lordswood venue. The “Grand Prix 1” (GP) is one of 3 being held through the early part of the 2010 season, at different locations up to June. The aim is to compete in every “Grand Prix” & to climb up the ‘results ladder’. The target being to reach the top 16 teams, then the last 8 & 4, to qualify for major National & International competitions, to represent England at the “Home Na-tions Championships (between England, Scotland & Wales); in male & female European events & the World Championships. Info The Ladies & Men’s “GB 2” will take place on Sun 23rd May at Hereford & the “GB 3” on the 6th June nr South-ampton . After which the last 8 thru to the top 4 teams compete in further competitions for National & Interna-tional representation - including the ‘Worlds’. Report On a surprising reasonably warm & sunny early spring late March Sunday morning, 22 men’s & 10 women’s only teams entered; both were a little disappointing from the Organiser’s point of view - the English Petanque As-sociation’s Management Committee (EPA M/C). It being suspected that the low turnout was aggravated by/due to: a) The resurrected West Sussex Brack-lesham Bay Holiday Centre’s “Petanque weekend”, with many Kent club teams taking part & b) Chiltern Region’s 2009/2010 Winter League Finals, which eliminated many good teams travelling down into Kent .
Strong triples teams from all over the country, including
the North, East & West Midlands, Herts & Beds, Essex, the Thames valley area, London, South & the Isle of Wight, travelled into Kent to take part; joining the top & experienced Ladies & Men’s Kent club teams - including those of the Medway Towns. The boule play during the day, concluding in the early evening, showed some very good & continual performances of tight pointing & of course fantastic shooting.

As expected & not surprising from the level of experience & knowledge of those present, with games being won very easily or many going very close to the wire - could have gone either way with two re-maining boule to take the winning game point (13-11) Results & Analysis
Ladies: GP1 1st The Winning team were all from the Eastern Region, across the other side of the River Thames, win-ning all their 5 games. 2nd The Runners Up team were also outside of Kent , being a composite team of the Northern & South-ern regions, taking 4 of their 5 games. 3rd,The popular “Kent Angels” team, aiming to repeat their previous successes in this National event, were Fay Golder (Tovil P.C.), Barbara Sharrett (Old Sheaf P.C.), Joyce Nash (Hartley Country Club P.C.) & Sheila King (The George P.C); who won 3 of their 5 games.

1ST The Winning West Midlands team, were very good all day - being one of the co favourites. 2nd The Runners Up , were Kevin Spillett, Rowland Jones & Greg Davenport, Marcus Hickman .

Thursday 15th April held at Tovil Workingmen’s Club. 8 commit-
tee members were outnumbered by 9 attending players from
Kent Clubs.
Total KPA funds stand at £10986.87.
To date this years membership stands at 594 adult members
and 11 juniors and 35 registered clubs.
A statement of intentions of the KPA Junior Fund was agreed….and is printed in full on page 8 of this Gazette. The main topic of discussion and the reason for the attendance of 9 non committee mem-
bers was to discuss the alteration (or not) of the date of the 1st County Triples Qualifier
on the 18th April which clashed with the Semi-Finals and finals of the Euro-Cup for Clubs
being held on the same day, in which teams from both Tovil PC and Meadow PC would be
competing. The complaint from the floor was that through no fault of their own both
Tovil and Meadow teams were being penalised for the Kent Triples Qualifier Series by
being able to play in only 4 Competitions instead of 5, and some sort of adjustment to the
rules or scoring should be made in their favour.
The Committee stated the obvious that a mistake had been made, and that correspon-
dence had also been received complaining of the alternative date of the 25th, and it was
therefore the Committees responsibility to try to come to a solution that was acceptable
to “most” of the KPA members.
The conclusion was made that teams affected would be given “seeding” advantage in the
2nd Qualifier ( for teams with 2 or more players who played in the Euro Cup on the 18th).
The rules for the Qualifier Series would remained unchanged and adhered to.
As a participating observer….it must be said that this discussion was chaired very well by
Martin Eggleton, and there were some very good arguments made in a reasoned way from
several participants and from all sides of the argument. There were several points made
that should be taken very seriously for the playing calendars in future years, this is not
the first time that confusion has arisen.
The EPA Coaching Commission has arranged two separate courses of
two days duration for candidates to achieve the EPA Grade 3 Certifi-
cate. Applications for entry can be made through your Club Secretary
COURSE No.1 will be held at Whitnash Sports and Social Club near Leamington, War-
wickshire, home of Whitnash Windmill Petanque Club on Saturday 22nd May and Saturday
19th June.
COURSE No.2 will be held at Impulse Leisure Centre, Lancing, Sussex, home of Adur
Petanque Club on Saturday 3rd July and Saturday 31st July.
The fee for each course and examination is £22.
Applicants can opt for either course, stating their choice on the application form, but
must attend at the same venue for both dates.

GENERAL
1. The Junior Fund is a discrete fund within the KPA financial account. The monies for
the fund are generated by fund raising and donation.
2. The Fund is administered by three Trustees appointed annually by the K.P.A.
Management Committee.
AIM
3. The aim of the Fund is to financially support juniors, of whatever standard, in at-
tending events and tournaments in order to develop and enhance their playing skills
and experience. It may also provide additional financial support to juniors taking
part in County or National rep representative events.
MANAGEMENT
4. Awards shall be at the discretion of the Trustees in accordance with the following
principles :
(a) Applications or proposals for support must be received prior to the event and
detail the costs involved.
(b) Overnight accommodation expenses will only be considered when travelling time
to the event is deemed to be too great for travel on the same day, normally
21/2 hours. It will normally be limited to a nightly allowance as set by the
Trustees annually.
(c) Except where impracticable, travelling expenses will normally be limited to a
mileage allowance as set by the trustees annually.
(d) An individual will not normally be granted more than two awards annually.
(e) Additional accommodation/travelling allowances will not normally be granted for
Chaperones.

All the Clubs under the EPA umbrella were eligible to enter this Competition. Some did,
some did not. Those that did, braved the worst of the winters weather starting last Sep-
tember 30th, playing and aiming to be crowned as the top CLUB Team in England. Four
teams reached the final stage on Sunday 18th April at Burnham, including two Club teams
from Kent, “Meadow P.C.” and “Tovil P.C.” The other two teams were “Half Crown P.C.”
located in the village of Stockton Warwickshire and are in the West Midlands Region. The
other qualifying team was “Cobbetts PC” from Southampton in the Southern Region.

The first adjustment to the Leagues has fallen on DIVISION 4 where the team,
“MOSSY’S REGULARS” has dropped out because they could not guarantee to regularly
field a full team. Unfortunately the League organisers did not receive notice of this
cancellation until after the fixtures had been arranged and published. The fixtures for
Division 4 will remain unchanged and games against MOSSYS REGULARS will count as a
“bye”. The fixtures and details for “Mossy’s Rats”, will remain unchanged.
Announced 15th April that also the “Battle of Britain” team have withdrawn from
DIVISION 6. A shame for one of the oldest club’s in Kent to struggle for membership,
guessing that the Club has been operational for over twenty years, and at one time could
hold well supported and successful open Sunday Competitions.
Thanks-a-bunch, Iceland. Whilst the fair and patient
citizens of Kent await the return of the 60 odd mil-
lion pounds that the unwise burgers of Kent invested
into Mickey Mouse Investments of Iceland...the
“Icers “ see fit only to repay us with ash, not cash.
Better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick ?
Untold thousands of desperate Kent petanque players are stuck with their boule in far
distant places not knowing whence they shall return to the Garden of England.
Petanquer, Peter.B. stuck in some place in Turkey after a golf holiday has tried the idea
of “trains and boats and planes” to get home, and has settled on a train, the all stations
stopper from the Dardenells to Northfleet and should arrive home sometime midway
through the Winter League Season.
Petanquer, Gilly P. stuck in the land of the pyramids and Arabs, has befriended a camel
with only a slight hint of Halitosis, who she is trying to persuade to give her a ride back
to blighty, but “Sheik ALeg” says that camels are not cut out for autobhans……..at the
price she is offering.
And the most desperate of all is Jean-Louis Guiot and his new bride Emma who are en-
trapped in the laps of luxury in a 22 star hotel some place in Florida in the U.S. of A. who
are on the verge of suffering from opulence and over indulgence at someone else’s ex-
pense, but are determined to struggle on for the next couple of months or two. Sad too,
that they have missed the April deadline of the Gazette exclusive 4 page spread of the
story of the wedding of the year…..now to be in the May issue.
Dave L. misses his golf holiday to Portugal or somewhere, or anywhere in the sun.
And last but not least….the cancellation of “Normus Tours” trip of a small group of Kent
players to play in the four day competition in Blanes in Spain. A repeat of last years very
successful competition where a group of ex-pats found their way to Spain to join ex-Kent
players, Norma and Stuart Parkway who organised entry into the competition. Here we
sit, all euro’d up but no where to go.

come face to face with a Hartley lady she will line you up 10 metres
away to prove how wrong you were !
The correct answer is c) ...
In the Ladies World Championships held in Thailand last year, in a
first round match the Welsh Lasses beat the American Playmates by 8
points to 3 ! How come I hear you say ?
In the early rounds, games were limited to one hour which produced some very strange
scores, this one being just an example. I have said it before and I'll say it again: timed
games are a curse on the game of Petanque. They can lend themselves to gamesmanship
or ( as the French would call it ) cheating. Imagine a situation with 15 minutes of the
game left, with a team leading, say, 11-6. They are not going to lose now, are they ?
The system was used once at Brean 3 or 4 years ago ... And never again !
Those people who want to impose it upon us say that with large numbers we must make
sure we finish on time ( whatever that means ). I say if you really are concerned with
time do what they do in the land where Petanque was born ( the South of France where
else ? )… When I am in my other home in the summer months and there is pressure on the
organisers because of a large number of entries, they play the early rounds to 11
points. In our case this would mean playing the morning sessions to 11 reverting to 13 in
the afternoon. That would work ... And would do away with the nonsense of an 8-3
score... Of course, should the Swiss system AND timed games be used in the same com-
petition then we can all move to theSouth of France !!

- the E.P.A. is conducting a survey called the “Adult Membership
Survey” by way of a questionnaire that you can obtain from the
EPA web-site: and if you wish to express your opinions about Petanque give this a try !
• - is said, that Whitstable P.C. are moving from their old venue at Whitstable Cricket
Club, which will see the end of the “cosy” petanque corner, but they will be able to
provide food at their new venue.
• - is said, that the petanque group delightfully named “The Yella Backs” are joining
with the Herne Bay club to play at the Share and Coulter
• Jack Milner points out that DITTON P.C. entered a team into the recent Harriers
Mayor of Maidstone Competition….a welcome first for DITTON which included an
old mucker of Jack’s by the name of John Coomber.
Hartley Country Club Petanque sadly report the
sudden death of Keith Wall. Keith was one of the
founding members of the Petanque Section and was an
enthusiastic member of Hartley Country Club over many
years playing various sports including table tennis, bowls and badminton.
Keith was an active member of the Petanque Section and his presence will
be sadly missed…..but remembered.
