Jean Makesh CEO, The Lantern Group
Jean Makesh is a local entrepreneur who designed the state-of-the-art Alzheimer care facility, The Lantern, in Madison, Ohio. His passion for helping people through the aging process was the impetus for the design and creation of a one-of-a-kind personality-centric rehabilitative care program at The Lantern.
Makesh holds a Master’s degree in Occupational Therapy from All India Institute for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in Mumbai, India and a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Lake Erie College in Painesville, Ohio. He has received numerous awards for his work, including the Entrepreneur of the Year award from Lakeland Community College and the Model Practice Award from the Ohio Occupational Therapy Association. As part of his personal mission to support, educate, and equip those who care for Alzheimer’s patients, he has co-written a textbook for medical professionals and caregivers - Svayus Revelation to a Unique World: Alzheimer’s Disease.
Before establishing Lantern Group, Makesh held various senior executive positions with a Fortune 500 company. His day-to-day responsibilities included ensuring best operational practices and compliance with the highest level of quality of care. He additionally designed and developed a patent-pending care delivery model to nurture and facilitate memory and to promote functional independence. This model is unique as a care program in that it is also therapeutic in nature. The care program utilizes the individual’s environment, learning processes and activities to activate repressed memories and stimulate newer learning.
Makesh believes that it is vitally important that we continue to develop new practices and greater knowledge in how to advance elderly care, especially that of Alzheimer’s patients. His goal is to continue to develop and construct state-of-the-art facilities that utilize therapeutic care models across the United States and around the world.

Aaron SherwoodAssociate of Applied Science, Physical Therapist Assistant Technology
Aaron Sherwood has the privilege and honor of delivering the student commencement address this evening to the Fall 2016 graduating class. He is receiving his Associate of Applied Science degree in Physical Therapist Assistant Technology.
“I’m honored to be granted the opportunity to speak this evening and humbled as I was not expecting to be nominated,” Sherwood stated. “I appreciate it because I know how much I put into earning this degree – the long hours of study, putting in extra time on campus on weekends, going to open labs, taking advantage of Supplemental Instruction and speaking with my teachers when I needed some extra assistance – I feel like my efforts did not go unnoticed.”
Following his graduation from Madison High School, Sherwood pursued a career in the restaurant industry for a number of years, including positions in Tennessee, South Carolina and Hawaii, before returning to Ohio.
When he decided it was time for a career change, Sherwood explored a couple classroom options at a nearby school but decided none of those matched his interest. He then recalled a time several years before when
he was rehabbing a soccer injury and had a positive experience with physical therapy. He researched several options before selecting the Physical Therapist Assistant Technology program at Kent State Ashtabula. After completing his prerequisite work, a shadowing experience with an area physical therapist assistant (PTA) reinforced his decision.
“During an observation at Ashtabula County Medical Center, I was with a PTA who was very inspiring to me. Just watching him interact with the patients and the way they reacted to him - it was kind of a light in their dark day, and his positivity and how he lifted them up for that moment was really impactful. I saw that, and I knew that’s what I wanted to do. I wanted to be that person in their lives and base myself on what I saw from him.”
“The program here at Kent State Ashtabula is awesome. It’s very challenging, but you get out of it what you put in. I worked really hard to get the grades I did. I probably had to put in double the work. It’s not easy, and you won’t just breeze through it. You just have to work hard for what you want to get. I had great teachers take the time to work with me, provide a calming presence. So many people here have been so helpful, and I’m grateful for that.”
After taking his licensure exam, Sherwood plans to immediately begin a career as a PTA.
“I’m honored to be the voice of this year’s graduating class and can only hope that I can or have inspired someone else in their pursuit of education and happiness in life.”
