He was with his family, at home. Our thoughts and prayers are with the McCormack family at this very difficult time. Levi was an amazing child who achieved so much in his life. He will always be cherished and loved by his Kenthurst school community. Our whole staff will be attending the special service at Baulkham Hills on Friday morning. The Director of Public Schools NSW, Mr Tim McCallum, Teachers, Deputy Principals and Principals from neighbouring schools will be here to teach our students until we return. Variety Charity – Our Librarian Mrs Parnaby and one of our grandmothers Mrs White, will be participating again this year in Variety Club’s car rally. They won this event last year! This is a children’s charity that raises much needed funds for the children’s hospitals. In March, our grandmothers will be departing from Jenolan Caves on their exciting 4WD Adventure to Forster in the “Caves to Waves” car rally. Our RED DAY on Wednesday raised $392 for this worthy charity and I will be attending the “sold old” spectacular fund raising event being held this Friday night at The Mean Fiddler. SAKP - Our new state of the art kitchen has been completed, where students will be working with The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Program (SAKP) growing, cooking and eating healthy food. The commercial kitchen will enable students to learn preparation and presentation of food. Teachers are currently completing cooking course with SAKP to enhance and engage our student’s knowledge of food. Food Gardens in Schools Project - The Minister for the Environment announced this week that the NSW Environmental Trust has approved a grant of $3500 for our Food Gardens in Schools project. Our committee of Mrs Eurell, Mrs Ristuccia and Mrs Peacock, our enthusiastic parent member, prepared this successful submission. Kenthurst Kitchen - The children are loving their new kitchen facilities and so are the mums and dads. If you are able to come and assist on Thursdays and / or Fridays please contact the school or Tracey Nelson. We endeavour to have more home cooking options for our students and a new menu will be available soon.

Gifted and Talented Program (GATS) - Our program has begun with students working enthusiastically on Mathematics strategies, Literacy, Debating and Problem solving. Mrs Burns and Mrs Parnaby have assessed students and are thrilled with the potential. Teacher Professional Learning - Our staff are currently attending many courses to become proficient in the new English and Mathematics curriculum. Our focus is on writing skills and we will be attending a six week course with Ann Leaf at Galston High School. Every Tuesday afternoon, together we are working on an online session for both Literacy and Maths. Quality teachers make the difference to learning and here at Kenthurst we have Quality Teachers. P&C – The next meeting will be the AGM, please come and meet other parents who want to help in a variety of ways. If you would like to know more about positions available eg. Treasurer, please contact Bec Martin or Cherie Miller. Welcome to Kenthurst - Movie Night is next Friday. Details below. All are welcome! Our Kindergarten children are so clever! They are reading and writing magnificent stories already, eg. I am little like a mouse and I am big like a dinosaur. Wow. That’s the Kenthurst way! Looking forward to seeing you at our Parent Information Nights next week. Yours, in quality education - Caron Dodd, Principal

Kirsty McHugh - Computer Coordinator Nut Allergies Just a reminder, some of our students have a severe, life-threatening reaction to nuts and nut products. Though they are very careful about not sharing food, there is always the possibility of them accidentally ingesting some transferred nut product. For that reason, we ask that nuts and nut products are not included in your children’s lunch boxes.

Assistant Principal Corner Congratulations!!! Arts North Regional Band We are really pleased to announce that two students from Kenthurst Public School have been selected to be members of the Arts North Regional Band. Gemma McCusker and Brooke Fitzpatrick These students were required to audition for these places as these Northern Sydney Premier ensembles offer musical extension to talented musicians and the opportunity to play music to the highest quality. Gemma and Brooke will be very busy students as they are committed also to our own Kenthurst Public School Band. We wish them luck and are thrilled to have our school represented at this regional level. Thank you Mrs K Barrat - Assistant Principal

Red Day at Kenthurst Our Red day at Kenthurst was very successful due to the wonderful support of our school community. We had the colour red as the red heart is the logo for Variety. As you know myself and another grandmother from Kenthurst Public School, Mrs Sharon White are once again doing the Variety Children’s Charity 4 Wheel Drive Adventure to raise much needed funds for children with special needs. Inspired by Pricilla, Queen of the Desert, and being the only femail participants their 4WD has an oversized red high-heeled shoe on the roof and huge eyelashes on the headlights. This year the Adventure “Caves to Waves” begins at Jenolan Caves and ends in Forster and whole school community has rased $392 on Red Day towards this worthy Charity.

Contact Details Please remember to advise the school office of any changes to your contact details, including emergency contact names and phone numbers. This is very important should we not be able to contact you in case of an emergency, such as sickness or accident.

Stage 1 News The year has started well for Stage 1 students who have all settled in well to their new classes. It was lovely to welcome in some new students, Michelle, Soraya and David to our classes. They are enjoying their new school and are making lots of friends. We were able to get straight into our work thanks to the wonderful support from about 20 parents who spent a morning covering all of our books for Kindergarten, Year 1 and 2. This was a marvellous help for us and really proved the old saying of ‘many hands make light work’. Thank you so much! Stage 1 students are learning about Sustainability this term with a literacy focus. We are reading some lovely new books which have been purchased through the library. The main book we are studying is ‘The Curious Garden’ by Peter Brown. This delightful book about a little boy called Liam who discovers a struggling garden and decides to take care of it. As time passes, the garden spreads throughout the dreary city, transforming it into a lush, green world. You can view the story by going to this link, http://vimeo.com/53757320. We will be using this book to explore the concepts of Characterisation and Advocacy which are two of the concepts which feature in the new English syllabus being implemented this year. In Science, the students are having a lot of fun with Mrs McHugh, learning about creepy crawlies. ‘’Insects ‘’is the topic this term and students will be getting up close and personal with the many species in our playground. (See photos above) Keep an eye out in the next newsletter for more exciting news from Stage 1. Edwina Shaw Assistant Principal

Kenthurst Public School P&C AGM

Wednesday 5 March 2014 7:30pm

Kenthurst Public School in the Learning Centre The P&C is a group made up of Parents and Community members that work in conjunction with Kenthurst Public School to support School in any way that we can. We provide support at school events and we organise fundraising opportunities to raise money to support the School in providing the best learning opportunities for our local Children. We also provide and manage the Uniform Shop and School Canteen. The funds we raise provide reading recovery support for our Children that need assistance with their reading. We have also provided funds to enable the School to become wireless and we will be providing the ipads and Laptops which are in the process of being purchased now. Our AGM is Wednesday 5 March 2014 at 7:30pm and we are inviting you to come and show your support for our School. We are actively seeking a new Treasurer to replace our current Treasurer who has provided fantastic support for a number of years now. Meetings are held monthly on the first Wednesday of every month (except school holidays) and usually last no more than 1 ½ hours. You do not need to hold a position on the committee to attend meetings. If you have any questions or would like any further information please contact:
