We have had multiple questions and emails on the “Murder Hornets” that social media has been hyping up.

I spoke with Dr. Bessin at UK about it and he has been inundated with questions too. With the information he gave me, this is my response to questions with all the links in case you need it as well.

What we are seeing now in Kentucky is the European hornet. The European hornet is about 2/3rd the size of the giant Asian Hornet. In the summer (July-August) we also see the large cicada killer wasp. I have included a link to the information we have on the European, giant Asian and cicada killer wasp below. The hornets and wasps mistaken for the giant Asian hornet in surrounding counties have been identified as either known hornets or wasps, according to Dr. Bessin.

This is a Giant Asian Hornet – which you will NOT find here in Kentucky.

The Nutrition Education Program has partnered with the Goodwill Industries of Kentucky’s RISE Program this past month. RISE stands for Reintegrating Individuals Successfully Everyday, and NEP has been providing the virtual nutrition programming portion of the program. Two cohorts have completed the virtual RISE program so far, for a total of 9 graduates. At the end of the program, participants share their vision boards during the virtual graduation ceremony. This has been a valuable partnership that began through the pandemic but will continue even afterwards.

I’m super excited about our art camp via zoom called Express Yourself! I can’t wait to see some 4-Hers faces!

I have been working on examples of our art that we will be learning during our Express yourself day camp. Also I have been emailing our sweet Cloverbud Club some fun spring and summer activities! I have been emailing our Photography Club some cool ways to get pictures even in quarantine.

The Extension Homemakers is a volunteer group that develops leadership skills, supports

community causes, and promotes Extension’s educational programs in all Kentucky

counties. Jefferson County Extension Homemaker Mary Jo Delaney and daughter

Shelby Marshall have been responding to local health care workers requests for fabric

face masks in the Kentuckiana area. Homemade fabric masks may not provide the

same level of protection as hospital-grade PPE, but offer a greater level of safety than

not using any kind of face protection. She can make about two dozen masks daily.

By Valerie Holland, Agent for Family and Consumer Sciences Education

Their combined sewing efforts have

provided over a 1000 masks so far for

these essential workers: 250 sewn for

Indian Creek nursing home in

Corydon, IN and 800 donated to

Seven Counties Services clients and

staff, and many more masks made for

homeless shelters, family and friends.

It's been over two months since I have been able to have a 4-H club meeting in person. Instead I have made videos which are available on the 4-H YouTube page and the 4-H Facebook page.

I have also had the opportunity to take trainings which have given me ideas for the fall. Until we can meet enjoy this recipe.

Spring is a busy time in the schools and homes to participate in the 4-H Embryology program. This year, we didn’t let the social distancing stop us from continuing this program. Several schools continued to meet with 4-H Agent Kelly Smith and gather incubators, eggs and other supplies and take the project home with them to hatch virtually. Many classrooms held zoom meetings to learn about the lifecycle of the chick, development of the embryo, and continue to monitor the temperature and humidity levels. After they hatched, many continued to view the chicks and send them off to the farm.

Some pictures included are from a classroom that held a daily zoom meeting along with curriculum from 4-H and Ag in the classroom to continue their studies within the area of Embryology.

The 4-H Embryology program gives children of all ages a hands-on experience in the incubation period and hatching of chickens. The incubation period takes a total of 21 days for the chicks to hatch.

If you are considering raising chickens, here is a link to keeping you and your family healthy if raising backyard chickens: https://www.cdc.gov/healthypets/resources/backyard-flock-8x11.pdf

In partnership with CommonEarth Gardens, Jefferson County Extension has been supporting New American Farmers to launch farm businesses in Louisville, KY for the past three years. This program involves helping farmers learn how to grow and market their produce in Louisville.

By Chanda Hall, Agent for 4-H Youth Development Education

Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic their will not be a Jefferson County 4-H Golf Scramble this year. More details to come for ways you can still support Jefferson County 4-H during this pandemic. With much gratitude and thankfulness, we appreciate the commitment of our lead sponsor Feeder’s Supply in their continued financial support of the Jefferson County 4-H Program!

With COVID-19, we have continued to support farmers by helping them adapt to the new farmers market COVID-19 guidelines. Farmers receive one-on-one support for how to adapt their farmers market set-up as well as support to launch online pre-ordering for produce, if they so choose. As of June 1, five farm businesses have begun selling at farmers markets in Louisville and three of those businesses have created online pre-ordering platforms to increase their sales. If you want to learn about where to go to support these farm businesses, please visit: https://cclou.org/common-earth-gardens/community-gardens-farms/incubatorfarm/

COVID-19 has affected every corner of our Nation and the University of Kentucky’s Cooperative Extension Service is no exception. Due to COVID-19, the Extension Service as a whole has moved a number of programs to video format and this goes for the Jefferson County 4-H Youth Development Program. One of the major programs the 4-H Program offers, the Communications Public Speaking Event, was held virtually and it was a great success. With the learning curve everyone was under, we came together to make the virtual event work.

There were 31 participants who sent in videos in various categories; 27 of the participants received blue ribbons and 4 received red ribbons. Nine participants won grand champion in their categories and are now progressing to the State Communications Event which will also be held as a virtual competition where the participants will be sending their videos to be judged.
