valuing our customers

Some of us would have read with interest

how Virgin America CEO David Cush had called

stranded passengers of his airline, offering

apologies and vouchers for new flights.

I was deeply impressed by the story as it

demonstrated the commitment from the airline’s

top management, no less, to reach out to

aggrieved customers personally with a phone call.

In these days of mass consumerism, such human

touch seems so rare.

Here at Keppel, customer service is a given and

not a nice-to-have. We pride ourselves in the

core values of customer focus, integrity and

accountability.

With businesses spanning over 30 countries

worldwide, the Keppel brand value comes from

investing in valued customers as much as in quality

products and services and in R&D.

Be it at our shipyards or properties, customer

service must reflect our commitment to provide

timely, quality and innovative solutions to meet

and even exceed customers’ expectations.

It might sometimes seem challenging to define

what constitutes good customer relations for a

mostly business-to-business global conglomerate

such as ours. But that only makes building personal

relationships with our clients, understanding and

addressing their needs – from pitch to delivery and

after-sales service – all the more challenging as

well as rewarding.

In the long run, we believe that sustained attention

to service can transform how customers perceive

the Keppel brand – we are not just a producer

of cold iron and steel or brick and mortar, but

a community with the human touch. And more

genuinely, we do not shy away from brickbats

but instead, welcome constructive feedback for

continuous improvements.

As much as achieving world-class quality for our

products is important, thoughtful and innovative

solutions, professional and reliable service as well

as accountability and responsibility especially in

the face of difficulty, are what keep our customers

coming back to us. This is why they will continue

to book their berth with us, establishing Keppel as

the choice partner and provider of solutions.

Set up in 1990, Keppel AmFELS was Keppel FELS’ first overseas venture outside of Singapore, as part the company’s Near Market, Near Customer strategy.

Over the years, the yard steadily nurtured a dynamic wo rk fo rce , honed i t s capabilities and built up top-c lass fac i l i t ies and equ ipment to become the most comprehensive shipyard in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM).

He said, “The nature of my job can be dangerous at times. Whenever I see this photograph of my wife and four children, I will miss them and be reminded to be careful at work.”

Keppel Energy launched the ‘This is Why I Work Safe’ campaign in January this year. Photographs of employees’ loved ones were printed on the reverse sides of their staff passes with the tagline.

As of early-October, some 4,500 workers have benefited from the training at the centre.

Under this thrust, Keppel has also rolled out a programme where project leaders are placed on a stint to the safety department to better understand workplace safety management and to enable them to apply the safety knowledge acquired when they resume their regular duties.

He added, “At Keppel Energy, we have the necessary sytems and procedures in place – this campaign takes the emotive approach to increase staff determination to work safely. Now, every time we take out our pass to enter the plant, it serves as a reminder that our loved ones are waiting for us at home.

SIGNIFICANT STRIDESThe cumulative effect of Keppel’s safety journey is seen in the improvement of its accident frequency rate (AFR), falling from 2.8 in 2006 to 0.40 reportable accidents for every million man-hours worked in the first half of 2010.

The Group’s Accident Severity Rate (ASR) also reduced to 129 man-days lost per million man-hours worked in first half of 2010 from 560 man-days lost in 2006.

From fulfilling a childhood curiosity to quenching his desire for global exposure, Ivan Lim has always sought to gain new knowledge, expand his horizons and grow his abilities.

Now in Qatar serving Nakilat-Keppel Offshore & Marine (N-KOM), Ivan embraces the challenge of helping to fortify Keppel O&M’s networks in the Middle East.

Eager to contribute and be part of the establishment of a world-class yard from the ground up, Ivan, AGM (Operations) at N-KOM, recognises that the learning opportunity is tremendous.

He shared, “My posting to Qatar will add global perspectives to my current understanding of the shipyard industry, and build on my practical and theoretical knowledge in ship repair and conversion projects.”

Ivan’s career in the offshore and marine industry was sparked by a boyhood fascination for seafaring vessels. Then, he had often wondered how ships worked and were put together.

At 16, he applied to work at Keppel Shipyard and was awarded a scholarship to pursue a Diploma in Marine Engineering at Singapore Polytechnic.

expanding horizonsAf te r comp le t i ng the diploma programme and national service, Ivan served as a Machinery Assistant Engineer for ship repair projects, and subsequently became a Project Engineer for Floating Production Storage and Offloading conversion projects.

Noting his diligence, tenacity and interest in ships, Keppel Shipyard sponsored his diploma, and afterwards his Bachelor’s Degree in Marine Engineering and Master Degree in Marine Engineering at the renowned University of Newcastle upon Tyne in the United Kingdom.

The years have not tempered Ivan’s passion for the offshore and marine industry. Instead, his first hand exposure at Keppel Shipyard has led him to appreciate the industry not only from an engineering standpoint but also for its dynamism and spirit.

Ivan noted, “Our yards simultaneously undertake numerous complex, mega-structure rig or ship projects which require rigorously scheduled inputs of materials and manpower.”

“To ensure safe , h igh q u a l i t y a n d q u i c k turnarounds, we emphasise g o o d c o m m u n i c a t i o n and teamwork between Keppelites, customers and

subcontractors,” added Ivan, on the pillars of good yard management.

Keppelites Abroad

Agile adapter Two years ago, Vichien Yupoonsup, a Thai working in Keppel Land Singapore, was presented with the o p p o r t u n i t y t o m o v e abroad as one of Keppel Land Vietnam’s investment managers.

Even though the role was almost completely new to Vichien, he took the challenge head-on, knowing that it was a great opportunity to sink his teeth deeper into the business and learn widely.

With this gung-ho attitude and a spirit for learning,

Vichien, accompanied by his wife and young son, moved quickly to Ho Chi Minh City, where Keppel Land is developing a plethora of properties ranging from villas and condominiums to a township and commercial mixed-use developments.

Having relocated from his homeland to Singapore at a tender age for his education, Vichien knew that challenges lay ahead, but he was even more eager to experience life and work in a whole new env i ronment and culture.

It was not long before Vichien settled into Vietnam and the local ways of doing business and making friends.

Vichien, now 36, shared, “In Vietnam, you can make new friends easily. Most of the locals are helpful and friendly even before they get to know you well. We often enjoy chatting over Ca Phe (Vietnamese coffee).”

What made it easier for Vichien to blend in are his Vietnamese colleagues, whom he has come to realise, embrace the same values as

Vichien remarked, “At work, they maintain a high level of professionalism and dedication – the same as my colleagues from Singapore or anywhere else where Keppel operates. The vitality of the people here is infectious, and I am thrilled to be part of Keppel Land’s robust growth and development in Vietnam.”

Other than his new friends, Vichien’s greatest reward ha s been the my r i ad opportunities to learn and stretch his limits.

He enthused, “Being in a high growth business operation means there are more chances for me to learn. Besides evaluating investment opportunities, I had also been roped in for both corporate and project marketing efforts. It is very exciting to be able to contribute and add value to other departments, and to work together to fulfill common objectives.

“There’s s t i l l so much more for me to learn and experience. I’m glad that I was given the opportunity to be here.” keppelite

The challenge of many graying nations is the need to increase support for their elderly, and especially to help those in their golden age lead healthy and secure lives.

Lending their hand to help maintain happy homes for the aged in Singapore were Keppel Volunteers which paired with the Moral Senior Activity Centre (Kaki Bukit) this month.

One of two Senior Activity Centres under the Chee Hoon Kog Moral Promotion Society, Moral Senior Activity Centre (Kaki Bukit) strives to offer community, social, recreational and welfare services to the elderly.

The pair ing was made possible through SG Cares, a group that encourages volunteerism by making it hassle-free and enjoyable.

On 20 November 2010, more than 20 Keppel Volunteers trooped with scrubs, pails, detergents, mops and even insecticides to begin their day of vigorous deep-cleaning at three houses in Bedok North, home to elderly folks.

The home maintenance programme is part of a series

of volunteer activities lined up by SG Cares in light of the United Nation’s designated International Volunteer Day (IVD) on 5 December 2010.

This special day commemorates the spirit of volunteerism and honours volunteers around the world for sharing their good deeds.
