SOUTH INDIA
The mainland states of southern India
are Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh,
Karnataka and Goa with the island
groups of the Lakshadweep to the west
and Andaman and Nicobar to the east.
South India has a vibrant culture and
is quite distinct from northern India
with different languages, cuisine and
landscapes. The Mughal Empire did not
reach the south so the architecture is
predominantly Hindu or colonial. The
climate is hot – tropical in some places,
dry in others.
Southern India offers a wide range of
experiences including historical sites
(many are World Heritage Sites) and temple
complexes, lush green mountains and hill
stations, interesting cities, backwaters
and palm fringed beaches. Activities that
may be undertaken in the area include
wildlife (including bird) watching,
trekking or walking, cruising on a
houseboat, cycling, kayaking, Ayurveda,
learning to cook or simply enjoying
eating the local cuisine. The area has
a wide range of accommodation to
suit all requirements and budgets.
THE BROCHURE
Our brochure is designed to help people create their
own individual holiday. It covers the destinations and
activities that are of interest to most visitors. The first
sections are arranged geographically, describing the
main destinations in each state and then listing some of
the accommodation options there. If you plan to visit
South India in order to follow a particular interest
(the wildlife of India is a common purpose) then the
Special Interests section starting on page 55 was designed
to help you. If there is a destination or activity not
mentioned that you would like - please ask us.
WE ALSO ARRANGE TAILOR-MADE HOLIDAYS TO NORTH INDIA
UNDER THE TRADING NAME OF SELECT CONNECTIONS. IF YOU
ARE INTERESTED IN A HOLIDAY IN NORTH INDIA OR WISH TO
COMBINE NORTH AND SOUTH INDIA - PLEASE TALK TO US OR
GO TO WWW.SELECTCONNECTIONS.CO.UK
KERALA CONNECTIONS LTD
Kerala Connections was created out of a love for the
place and the people. I first visited Kerala as a tourist
with my husband in the late 1980s. Despite our pledge
not to return to a place until we had seen the whole
world – we kept returning to Kerala. In 1998 I founded
the company at the request of some Keralite friends
who needed help in marketing their homestays and
small hotels. At that time there were no UK companies
specialising in Kerala and even the large companies
promoting India devoted very little space in their
brochures to Kerala and the South.
Kerala is now one of India’s premier destinations
(referred to as a superbrand) and we are proud of our
part in that. We remain the UK’s leading tailor-made tour
operator to Kerala and South India and continue to
offer the widest range of holidays to the area. We think
this is because our emphasis is on personal service as well
as our vast local knowledge of the area. Most of our
bookings come from repeat customers or from personal
recommendations. You can see what our clients think
of our service on the Feedback Blog attached to our
website.
We very much look forward to helping you to arrange
your holiday to South India.
Diana Syrett
FOUNDER AND MANAGING Director
www.KERALACONNECTIONS.co.uk 1
to visit South India is during the European
Winter (November to April). May, June and
July are when the heaviest rains fall. August and
September can be pleasant and in many places
this is festival time.
MEAL PLAN
We generally book hotels on a bed and
breakfast basis as this gives you flexibility.
However, there are some situations where the
accommodation is only offered on a half or full
board basis. This applies to the houseboats, the
homestays and the more remote properties.
TRANSFERS
All transfers are individually arranged and
at no time will you be grouped together with
other customers. Most transfers within India
are by road (we have a range of vehicles) but
we are also happy to book train tickets and
internal flights.
INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS
There are a number of airports across South
India, the main ones being Chennai (Madras),
Mumbai (Bombay), Bangalore, Cochin and
Trivandrum. Many airlines fly to the area but
very few are direct. Most airlines will allow
‘open jaw’ tickets which means that you can fly
into one airport and out of another. Once we
know the areas you wish to visit we can advise
on the most convenient airports and search for
suitable flights for you. London Heathrow has
the greatest choice but there are a number of
options from regional airports.
FAIR TRADE
We firmly believe in fair trade and Kerala
Connections has had a Fair Trade Policy since
the company was formed in 1998. Our Fair
Trade initiatives include:
● We do not have ‘exclusive agreements’
with hotels and do not block book rooms.
Rooms are booked on a first come, first
served basis. This means that the hotels are
free to market their properties in the way
that suits them best.
● We pay all our associates promptly. This
is unusual in India and much appreciated
by everyone we work with. This prompt
payment means that our bookings are
favoured at busy times.
● Where possible we book the hotels on
a bed and breakfast basis. This gives our
customers the opportunity to eat elsewhere
which may include small local restaurants.
In this way your money goes directly to
the provider.
● Our drivers have a contract and are paid a
monthly wage. This is very unusual in South
India where the normal practice is to pay
drivers commission only. This means they
only earn during the tourist season.
● There are a number of retailers who pay tour
operators to take customers to their shops.
This is unfair, both to the customers (who
pay a premium for their purchases to cover
the commission) and to other local traders.
We do not approve of such practices and
do not participate.
● We strive to keep our overheads down
in order to provide our customers with
competitive prices.
SUSTAINABLE TRAVEL
Operating responsibly has been the ethos
of Kerala Connections from the start and
we have always considered the environmental
and cultural impact of tourism. We strive
to ensure that our customers enjoy their
Kerala Connections holiday and at the same
time protect the environment, respect local
traditions, understand historic and cultural
issues and benefit the local communities.
The State of Kerala is also fully committed
to Responsible Tourism. It hosted the Second
International Conference on Responsible
Tourism in March 2008 and this resulted in
the adoption of the Kerala Declaration which
aims to achieve Responsible Tourism in all
destinations. Kerala Connections attended this
conference and participated in the drafting of
the declaration.
All of the properties we work with are to
some extent working in an environmentally
responsible way and we ask them to provide
us with details. Almost all say that they try
to minimise the use of plastic, try to reduce
wastage and recycle. A large number heat water
by solar power and have environmentally
friendly sewage treatment methods. Many
hotels do not use chemicals in their swimming
pools and they all do what they can to
conserve water.
If you are considering a holiday to India with
us but would like to be assured that the positive
contributions you are making will outweigh any
negative impacts, the following may help you.
● Our holidays are all tailor-made, which
means that the numbers we deal with are
relatively small but the spending (compared
with package or group tours) is relatively
high thus benefiting the local community.
● Almost all the hotels we work with are fully
or partially Indian owned and all are staffed
by locals.
● Many hotels have strong environmental
policies and some have won ‘Green’ awards
(eg the CGH Earth Group of hotels, Malabar
House, The Dune, Our Native Village, etc).
● We work with a number of privately
owned boutique hotels who have restored
a neglected heritage building to create an
authentic experience as well as preserving
India’s architectural heritage (eg the hotels
of the Neemrana Group, Visalam, Raheem
Residency, Ayisha Manzil, The Green Hotel).
● Most of our tours include visits to wildlife
areas (National Parks and Wildlife
Sanctuaries) and World Heritage and
Cultural Sites. Tourist spending in these
areas helps to protect and maintain the
diversity and cultural heritage of India.
● We support a number of charities in India
and provide our customers with the contact
details if they also want to contribute.
Kerala Connections is a member
of Responsible Travel.
To be accepted members must fulfil certain
criteria with regard to operating responsibly.
Kerala Connections supports the work
of The Travel Foundation
This independent UK charity was set up in
2003 by the travel industry in collaboration
with the UK government to respond to
concerns over the sustainability of travel
and tourism. We support the work of this
organisation and a voluntary donation of
£1 is added to all customer invoices.
ACCOMMODATION
We are able to book a wide range of
accommodation and pride ourselves on being
able to match our customers’ requirements
with accommodation to suit. To help
guide you we have developed our own
classification system. As a rule of thumb, the
higher the classification the higher the price.
L = Luxury. These hotels are of 5 star plus
quality, offering a full range of facilities.
Currently there are very few truly ‘luxury’
hotels in South India.
T = Top Quality. These hotels are 4 or 5 star
standard with comfortable rooms and a good
range of facilities.
M = Mid Range. 3 or 4 star hotels offering
a range of facilities and reasonable comfort.
They mostly offer air-conditioning (where
necessary) and many have swimming pools.
S = Standard. Economy, simple or budget
hotels. The facilities will be limited but the
rooms will have en suite facilities (unless
stated otherwise). These hotels may not offer
air-conditioning but a friendly service often
compensates for the lack of amenities.
H = Heritage. Any of the above categories
may also be old or heritage properties.
B = Boutique. Any of the above, but a hotel
with a small number of rooms offering stylish
accommodation – usually privately owned.
G = Guest in family home or guesthouse.
Most homestays will offer a comfortable
room with an attached bathroom but
otherwise the facilities are likely to be
limited and you must expect to eat the local
cuisine. There are ever increasing numbers of
guesthouses and homestays in South India
and it is not possible to include them all in
this brochure so we have only listed a few.
If this kind of accommodation appeals to
you please contact us.
With the odd exception we have visited and
inspected all of the properties featured in
this brochure and in most cases stayed at
them. By selecting these properties you can
rest assured that we believe them to be the
best options within the area in each category.
In addition to the featured accommodation
we list other popular hotels and we are
happy to book these, as well as properties
not mentioned in the brochure. You
are welcome to talk to us about your
accommodation requirements and we can
then supply you with the most up to date
information.
FINANCIAL SECURITY
In order to comply with the UK Package Travel
Regulations, we have arranged financial security
for our customers. This means you can book a
holiday with Kerala Connections with confidence.
Kerala Connections is a member of AITO
(Association of Independent Tour Operators).
An AITO member is required to protect money
paid by customers to the member for any
holiday sold under the AITO logo. Members
submit details of their financial protection
arrangements to AITO on a regular basis.
For further information about AITO see
www.aito.co.uk
The air holiday packages in this brochure
are ATOL protected, since we hold an Air
Travel Organiser’s Licence granted by the
Civil Aviation Authority. Our ATOL number
is ATOL 6462.
If you do not book your flights through us
then, in compliance with the UK Package
Travel Regulations, alternative arrangements
have been made. Please see our booking
conditions for more information.
VISAS AND PERMITS
All British visitors to India must obtain a visa
before departure. It is your responsibility to
arrange this. In addition to the Indian Visa,
a permit is required to visit certain areas of
India (including the Lakshadweep Islands).
The Republic of Maldives issues a tourist visa
on arrival and currently this is free of charge.
At the time of booking a holiday with us we
will supply you with up-to-date information
about visas and permits.
WEATHER
South India is within the tropics (in fact the tip
of the sub-continent is only about 8 degrees
from the equator). This means that the
temperature is warm to hot throughout the
year. The south of India experiences two
monsoons a year – the main south westerly
(from the Arabian Sea) and the later north
easterly (from the Bay of Bengal).
Not all areas benefit from these rains because
of the mountains but generally the land on
the western side of the Western Ghats is the
greenest. The areas experiencing more rain can
be humid although along the coast this can be
relieved by a sea breeze. In the mountains it is
considerably cooler (even cold at night).
We provide a weather chart for the main cities
of each state but as a general rule the best time
www.KERALACONNECTIONS.co.uk 32 www.KERALACONNECTIONS.co.uk
The people of Kerala (known as Keralites) are warm and friendly and interaction with
them is often a highlight of a holiday there. Keralites have a strong culture and are
fiercely proud of their state. Some of their art forms (eg Kathakali and Theyyam) and
martial arts (Kalaripayattu) are unique.
There are three main cities. The state capital of Trivandrum (Thiruvananthapuram) is in
the south, Cochin (Kochi) in the centre and Calicut (Kozhikode) to the north. Each has
an airport, which means that the whole of Kerala is reasonably accessible. However,
as in the rest of India, most of the roads are of poor quality and therefore travel can
be quite slow.
KERALAThe small state of Kerala, which represents
just 1% of the land mass, is considered to
be one of India’s most beautiful. It is a very
rural state with most of the population
living in villages and is culturally
and scenically diverse. Kerala has two
national parks, ten wildlife sanctuaries
and two bird sanctuaries. Kerala occupies
a long (550 km), narrow strip of land in
the far southwest of India. Its coastline
is on the Arabian Sea (part of the Indian
Ocean) and its eastern border with the
neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu is
the top of the majestic Western Ghat
Mountains. The landscape varies from
long golden beaches to cool hill stations
and dense green jungle to bustling cities.
Its unique feature is the network
of palm fringed backwaters.

CLASSIC KERALA
This historic harbour city is also Kerala’s commercial capital. Cochin International
Airport is approximately one hour north of the city. Most of the places of tourist interest
are situated on Fort Cochin and this is where most people like to stay despite the
fact that travelling around the various parts of Cochin is easy. Things to do in Cochin
include visiting Mattancherry (Dutch) Palace with its wonderful murals; the Synagogue
and streets surrounding it (known as Jew Town); St Francis Church, the oldest
European built church in India and the original burial place of Vasco da Gama.
It is interesting to watch the fishermen operating the Chinese fishing nets and Cochin
is also a good place to take in a Kathakali performance. There is an excellent range
of accommodation options - another factor making it so popular with our customers.
Cochin has a twin city – Ernakulam. Generally Cochin refers to Fort Cochin and
Ernakulam the mainland part of the city. Willingdon Island is sandwiched between
them. All three parts of the city are connected by road bridges as well as water taxis
so travel between them is not difficult.
BRUNTON BOATYARD,
FORT COCHIN (T, H, B)
A stylish hotel in a wonderful
position, right on the water’s edge
and a short walk from the Chinese
fishing nets. All bedrooms have a
harbour view and are furnished
in traditional Kerala style. The
spacious bathrooms have a bath and
shower cubicle. Facilities include a
swimming pool, main restaurant
terrace grill and Ayurveda centre.
Brunton Boatyard is part of the
CGH Earth Group and has strong
environmental credentials.
CHITOOR KOTTARAM,
ERNAKULAM (B, H)
This former summer palace of the
Maharaja of Cochin is located on
the banks of the Cochin backwaters
and is operated by CGH Earth.
The palace has two guest rooms
but will only take one booking at
a time - so it is exclusive.
MALABAR HOUSE,
FORT COCHIN (T, H, B)
This elegant hotel in a delightful
300 year-old building on Fort
Cochin overlooks the parade
ground. It is an interesting mix of
traditional Indian and contemporary
European design. Facilities include
a restaurant (offering both Kerala
and European cuisine), a wine and
tapas lounge (featuring the wines
of India), a small swimming pool
and an outdoor stage where cultural
programmes are a regular feature.
Brunton Boatyard
Other hotels on Fort Cochin include - HOTEL ARCHES (S) is small,
friendly and good value. KODER HOUSE (T, H, B) has six rooms
in an 1808 building with courtyard swimming pool. The GRANDE
RESIDENCIA (M-T, H, B) has 20 rooms and courtyard pool. KILLIAN’S
(M) in Fort Cochin - a good mid range option with pool. WALTON’S
HOMESTAY (G) is also in Fort Cochin see pages 22/23 for details.
On Willingdon Island is the original CGH Earth hotel THE CASINO
HOTEL (M-T) a business style hotel but representing very good
value for money, with a swimming pool and excellent restaurant. In
Ernakulam there is the RAMADA RESORT AND SPA (T) with a waterfront
position and villas opening directly onto a meandering swimming pool.
Close to the airport and perfect to cope with a difficult flight time is
LOTUS 8 (M) offering rooms for 5, 8, 12 and 24 hour stays.
Malabar House
OLD HARBOUR HOTEL,
FORT COCHIN (T, H, B)
This 300 year old building was the
first hotel of Cochin and has recently
been sympathetically restored into a
tasteful 13 room hotel. The spacious
rooms offer modern amenities while
maintaining the original character of
the Dutch style building. The garden
contains a swimming pool and stage
for cultural performances.
LE COLONIAL,
FORT COCHIN (T-L, H, B)
This Neemrana Hotel is one of the
oldest colonial buildings in Cochin
(dating back to 1506). Le Colonial
has a central position, adjacent to
St. Francis Church, and is said to
have accommodated Vasco da Gama.
It was also home to the Dutch
Governor and a British tea merchant.
It is now furnished with antiques
and offers a unique Neemrana ‘non-
hotel’ experience. This hotel (which
has a pool in the small garden)
possibly offers the most exclusive
option in Cochin.
VIVANTA BY TAJ - MALABAR,
WILLINGDON ISLAND (T-L, H)
An attractive hotel overlooking the
harbour. All the rooms are stylish
and those in the Tower Wing have
a sea or harbour view. There are
also some heritage rooms in the
original 1935 building. There is a
choice of restaurants including a
waterfront café, a Thai restaurant
and a Kerala speciality restaurant.
The wonderful infinity swimming
pool appears to run straight into
the harbour and there is also
a well equipped gym and spa.
TEA BUNGALOW,
FORT COCHIN (M-T, H, B)
The bungalow was built in 1912
and in 1956 it was bought by
Brooke Bond Tea Company to house

Indian Ocean that relates to the
history of spice and tea trading.
Tea Bungalow has a restaurant and
a garden with swimming pool.

OLD LIGHTHOUSE BRISTOW
HOTEL, FORT COCHIN (T, H, B)

the sometimes very humid city.
This hotel has a swimming pool
in the garden (as well as the old
lighthouse), spa and restaurant.
TISSA’S INN, FORT COCHIN (M, B)

converted from a private mansion,

and owned by them.
Secret Garden

If you are flying in or out of Cochin airport and want some time on the coast then
the beaches of central Kerala are ideal. The coastline of central Kerala is currently
undeveloped and quiet with few accommodation options and no beach bars or
restaurants. The area with the greatest choice of accommodation is around the village
of Mararikulam. Mararikulam is just over an hour south of Fort Cochin on a strip
of land between the sea and Vembanad Lake. It is a good location as it offers the
opportunity to visit the backwaters and Cochin. Alleppey is thought of as a backwater
town but is also on the coast and has a beach. There are also beaches north of
Cochin – but with even fewer accommodation options.
Please note: India is a developing country and fish are an important food source in Kerala. This means that fishing
takes place all along the coast and, while it may be interesting to watch the catch being brought in, you must also
be aware that this local activity does mean that the beaches have all kinds of debris on them. The beach resorts do
their best to keep their own beach fronts clean but tidal movements mean that this cannot be guaranteed. You may
prefer to swim and lounge at the hotel pool.
Other options include NATTIKA
BEACH RESORT (M) - Nattika
is north of Cochin within
easy reach of the airport.
This resort mainly caters for
Ayurveda clients. There is also
a homestay in the Mararikulam
area - ARAKAL HERITAGE (G)
- see the Homestays pages
22/23 for details.
BEACHES OF CENTRAL KERALA
MARARI BEACH RESORT,
MARARIKULAM (T)
This delightful and popular
resort has accommodation
in attractive thatched villas
– Garden Villas, Garden Pool
Villas and Deluxe Pool Villas
- set in substantial grounds.
There is direct access to the
beach through the resort’s
coconut grove. Facilities
include a swimming pool,
main restaurant, a snack
bar that becomes a fish
restaurant in the evenings,
shop and Ayurveda centre.
The resort is owned by CGH
Earth and therefore has strong
environmental credentials.
A recent introduction is the
Farm Kitchen. The chef will
plan a menu based on the
produce available in the
resort’s own organic vegetable
garden. The guests can then
harvest the vegetables and
can try their hands at cooking
the dishes with the help of
the chef.
A BEACH SYMPHONY,
MARARIKULAM (T, B)
The European owners have
completely renovated a few
cottages giving this resort a very
stylish, contemporary character
while retaining its attractive,
authentic nature. Guests have direct
access to the beach and meals are
a mix of Indian and Mediterranean.
One room has a private pool.
There is also a swimming pool
for all guests
MARARI VILLAS,
MARARIKULAM (M-T, B)
The accommodation here is
boutique serviced villas. Some
villas are right on the beach,
others are a short walk away
but have their own private
pools – all are stylish and
comfortable.
RAHEEM RESIDENCY, ALLEPPEY (T, H, B)
Situated opposite the beach at Alleppey, this is a small and very stylish,
privately owned hotel. The old heritage house has been sympathetically
converted and the place oozes with original features. Guests will enjoy
relaxing in and around the courtyard swimming pool. The bedrooms and
public rooms are furnished with antiques and readers will love the huge
range of books collected by the friendly Irish owner.
Kollam (Quilon) marks the southern end of the Kerala
backwaters. It is a typical market town with some old
wooden houses and winding streets. The village of
Paravoor, on the edge of an inlet, is 13 km south of Kollam.
Nearby there is a village where temple elephants are kept.
FRAGRANT NATURE, PARAVOOR NEAR KOLLAM (M-T)
This attractive eco-friendly resort has 29 rooms and villas spread over five
acres of land on the banks of a lake. Facilities include restaurant, swimming
pool and spa and a number of activities (cycling, fishing etc) are also offered.
Also in this area is AQUASERENE (M-T) a resort with traditional style cottages,
Ayurveda centre, large swimming pool and a lakeside position.
VARKALAVarkala is just over an hour north of Trivandrum
Airport. The attractive beach is at the bottom of a steep,
red cliff. Although Varkala is a beach resort with a range
of hotels, guesthouses, bars and restaurants, it is also
a place of pilgrimage for Hindus. The Sree Janardhana
Swamy temple and Sivagiri Mutt attract many pilgrims
and pujas for departed souls are conducted on the
beach each morning.
Most of the accommodation
at Varkala is in simple hotels or
small guesthouses and homestays
catering to the budget end of
the market. Of these we would
recommend KAIYA HOUSE (G),
a small guesthouse with seven
rooms each designed on a theme
from a different part of the
world. It is owned by a delightful
American woman who offers
Pilates and Yoga classes.
Kaiya House is located ten
minutes walk from the Varkala
cliff. PALM HERITAGE (S)
is a new hotel at beach level
(with swimming pool planned)
just north of the main beach
at Varkala.
THE GATEWAY HOTEL,
VARKALA (M-T)
This hotel is on the cliff top so
requires a short walk to the beach.
The rooms are spacious with
views across the hotel’s gardens.
Facilities include a swimming
pool, health club/Ayurveda centre,
restaurant, bar and a delightful
lobby/lounge with views across
the gardens to the pool and the
sea beyond. Gateway is a brand
of the Taj group of hotels.
HINDUSTAN BEACH
RETREAT, VARKALA (M)
Right on the beach, this modern
hotel has beautifully furnished
rooms, two restaurants, a
bar and a small garden with
swimming pool.
The Gateway Hotel
Marari Beach Resort
KOLLAM
www.KERALACONNECTIONS.co.uk 1110 www.KERALACONNECTIONS.co.uk
This term refers to the network of waterways stretching from Kollam in the south
to Cochin in the north and includes lakes, lagoons, rivers, canals and channels.
It is a beautiful area where you can visit small villages and enjoy the countryside
and birdlife – either from a backwater resort or from the decks of a houseboat.
Many of the resorts are on the banks of the vast Vembanad Lake. This region
of the backwaters, called ‘Kuttanad’, is known as the rice bowl of Kerala and
is one of the most beautiful and interesting areas.
RICE BARGES / HOUSEBOATS
Kettuvallams or rice barges converted
to houseboats are a unique feature of
the Kerala Backwaters. These boats were
originally used for transporting rice and
other goods and are traditionally made
of Anjli wood, bamboo and coir. The
boats move slowly along the waterways,
covering approximately 20 km per day.
Meals are cooked and taken on board and
traditional Kerala food is served. There
are many operators offering houseboats
these days and the quality varies hugely.
The operator we use has won many
awards, has an excellent reputation,
a team of professional boatmen and
a sizeable fleet of quality boats.
Your boat is always exclusive to you
(ie the only other people on board will
be the crew). The bedrooms have air-
conditioning at night and there are also
a few premium boats with the option of
air-conditioning during the day as well.
The boats have one or more bedrooms
and can cater for up to eight guests.
A cruise for one, two or more nights is
often the highlight of a holiday to Kerala.
It is very relaxing and a great way to
watch the world go by – but you don’t
have to spend all your time on board.
There will be plenty of opportunities to
disembark and visit places of interest
along the way.
We can also offer longer backwater
cruises and have a six night circular
itinerary available. Day trips without
an overnight stay are also possible.

Tamil Nadu is a large state in the far south
of India including the very tip of the
sub-continent. Tamil Nadu is considered
to be the cradle of Dravidian civilization
and is thought to be one of the oldest
continuous cultures in the world. The
Mughal Empire did not extend this far
south and consequently the state has
hardly been influenced by Islam.
Three powerful dynasties (the Cholas,
the Pallavas and the Pandyans) dominated
the area for over 1,000 years.
Tamil Nadu has a lot to offer. If you like
beaches then there is a long eastern
coast but there are only small pockets
of development. Beach hotels can be
found from the south of Chennai to
Pondicherry but there are few elsewhere. There are wildlife sanctuaries and hill
stations in the Western Ghat mountains.
The main attraction of Tamil Nadu for most people is the cultural heritage. There
are plenty of historical sites (some with World Heritage status) and many temples
to be visited. A number of the temple towns are major pilgrimage sites for Hindus
which adds atmosphere for tourists. Non Hindus are allowed inside most temples
in Tamil Nadu but they cannot
enter the inner sanctum. The small
villages and dramatic scenery are
an added bonus.

South of Chennai along the Coromandel Coast is
Mahabalipuram. This is a fantastic place to be based for
a few days (or longer) as it offers beach, cultural heritage
and a number of places that may be visited as a day trip.
Mahabalipuram is a World Heritage Site and its ancient
monuments include the famous Shore Temple and the
wonderful rock carvings of Arjuna’s Penance and the
various Mandapams and Rathas.
KANCHIPURAM may be visited as a day trip.
Kanchipuram was the capital of the Pallava Kings in the
fourth century and offers a range of temples to visit and
is famous within India for its silk weaving.
Other places of interest that may be visited while staying at
Mahabalipuram include Dakshina Chitra an arts and crafts
village. Here you can see replicas of traditional houses
from across South India as well as watching traditional
performing arts and seeing local crafts being made
(much of which is also for sale). The Crocodile Bank is
a breeding and research centre where they have most of the
crocodilian species in captivity (including a number of rare
specimens) as well as snakes.
CHENNAI Chennai (Madras) is the capital of Tamil Nadu and
is one of India’s largest cities. The international
airport has good links to the rest of the subcontinent
as well as being the major hub for south India.
The shopping is good. A half day city tour may
include Fort St George, St Mary’s Church, a number
of museums and the Kapaleeshwarar Temple.
Chennai is a busy city and getting to the city centre
by road can be very frustrating due to the amount
of traffic. Therefore most people immediately head
south to the beach area one and a half hours away.
If you need a night in the city either on arrival or
departure then Chennai has a good range of hotels.
Vivanta by Taj - Connemara
VIVANTA BY TAJ - CONNEMARA, CHENNAI (T-L, H)
A large, colonial hotel in a quiet yet central position. Facilities
include a 24-hour coffee shop, the wonderful Raintree open-

The following hotels are either near the airport or within reasonable distance
of it. RAIN TREE (T) - a very good top range hotel and one of the closest to the
airport. The TRIDENT (M-T) part of the Oberoi group takes bookings for under 24
hours. GRT GRAND (M-T) A pleasant modern hotel, situated in a residential area.
Facilities include an indoor swimming pool and health club (including sauna,
steam room and gym). The RADISSON HOTEL GRT (T) is perhaps the closest hotel
to the airport. FOOTPRINT (G) is a smart bed and breakfast option 30 mins from
the airport. It has nine rooms on the 2nd and 3rd floors of an eight floor building.

Pondicherry (now called Puducherry) is a former French
enclave and is administered as a Union Territory within
India and still maintains a ‘French’ atmosphere.
The town of Pondicherry has a long promenade and
behind this is the French enclave with its attractive
colonial buildings. Dining here is interesting as you can
eat Indian food with a French influence. Pondi has a
more ‘international feel’ than most Indian towns and
an unusually high population of foreigners possibly
due to the proximity of a large ashram and Auroville,
an international community project. The shopping
opportunities in Pondicherry are excellent because
many famous names have their products made here.
Most people spend just one night in Pondicherry town as a journey break
between Chennai/Mahabalipuram and the temple towns. Heritage hotels
within the French quarter include HOTEL DE L’ORIENT, (M, H, B) owned
by the Neemrana Group and created from an 18th century building. LE
DUPLEIX, (M, H, B) a stylish hotel with nine rooms. Another option is CALVE
HERITAGE HOTEL (M, H) situated on Vysial Street. This street recently
attained the Award of Merit from UNESCO under the Heritage Consevation
Programme.
The Dune
MAISON PERUMAL,
PONDICHERRY (H, B)
This friendly hotel is owned by
CGH Earth (the popular Kerala
based group of hotels with strong
environmental credentials). It is
situated in the Tamil quarter - one
of the few heritage buildings that
have been restored in this area. It
is a small and cosy hotel with just
10 rooms a restaurant and bar.
Our customers love this hotel.
The territory of Pondicherry has a shoreline along the
Bay of Bengal and along this coast are a number of
hotels offering a beach experience. For a longer stay
we recommend you stay at one of these hotels and
visit the town for shopping or eating out.
THE DUNE ECO BEACH HOTEL, PUDHUKUPPAM (M-T)
A beach hotel set in 30 acres of land, along 700m of beach front, just
north of Pondicherry town. Accommodation is in a variety of rooms,
cottages and houses each one with a unique blend of antique and
modern. The hotel practises responsible, eco-friendly tourism and there
is a very long list of environmental benefits. The restaurants are supplied
from the hotel’s own organic vegetable garden which also acts as a
demonstration farm and supports social activities developed through
NGO ‘Children of the World India’. Facilities include a swimming pool,
gourmet restaurant, bars, room service, DVD library and in-room player,
plus many indoor and outdoor games and activities.
LE PONDY, PUDHUKUPPAM (M-T)
A new hotel owned by a Kerala hotel group. They have 70 rooms spread
across a 14 acre beachfront plot. Facilities include a swimming pool,
restaurant, Ayurveda centre and spa (to follow).
Maison Perumal
This is an area of southern Tamil Nadu.
The villages of Chettinad are famous for their
highly embellished 19th century houses. These
once grand houses reflect the prosperity of their
wealthy merchant owners. If you would rather
be based in a village or country area and do your
sightseeing from there, then Chettinad will give
you access to both Tanjore and Madurai as it is
about half way between them (approximately 2
hours each way).
Note: Chettinad food is well known in South India and again,
reflecting the wealth of the people, is very much meat based.
Vegetarians are catered for but we recommend you tell us
before you depart so that we can inform the hotel in advance.
VISALAM, KANADUKATHAN
(T, H, B)
This delightful family home was built
in the 1930s and is an interesting mix
of Art Deco and South Indian styles.
It was converted into a hotel by CGH
Earth - Kerala based family owned group
of hotels with strong environmental
credentials. There are 15 rooms and a
good sized swimming pool. There are
three dining spaces: the breakfast lounge,
lunch room and terrace deck.
SHENBAGA VILAASAM, NEAR POLLACHI (G, H)
This heritage bungalow with four guest rooms was built
in the early 1900s and is full of artefacts which add to the
property’s charm. A number of activities are on offer in the
area including village walks, bullock cart rides etc. Many
species of bird can be seen in the area. The home cooked
food (vegetarian only) is a feature of this guesthouse.
BANYAN TREE FARM STAY, NEAR POLLACHI (G)
This farm is in a wonderful position surrounded by
plantations and not far from Top Slip and Parambikulam
National Park. You can explore the area on foot, by bicycle
or take a jeep safari to the edge of the forest.
The town of Pollachi in the Palakkad gap
is at a cross roads and useful for breaking
long journeys.
CHETTINADU MANSION,
KANADUKATHAN (G, H)
This impressive 100 year-old colonial
property is typical of the famous
Chettinad houses. It has a stunning
interior, giving an insight into an age

experience. There is a swimming pool
but it is a short distance from the house.

TEmple TownsThere are many temples in central Tamil
Nadu – more than most people can visit
on one holiday so it is probably best to select
a few. Some are within towns where there
is accommodation but many must be visited
en route or as a day trip.
TANJORE & TRICHY The heartland of the Chola Empire. The Brihadishwara
Temple at Tanjore is a UNESCO World Heritage site and
a truly beautiful example of Chola architecture. At Trichy
(Tiruchirappalli) you can visit the Rock Fort as well as the
huge Ranganathaswamy Temple at Srirangam.
MADURAI This is the oldest city in Tamil Nadu and was the capital
of the Pandyan Kings (apart from a short period when it
fell to the Cholas) until the end of the Pandyan Empire.
The main attraction is the huge and impressive temple
dedicated to Meenakshi, the consort of Lord Shiva.
Located in the heart of the town it is a wonderful example
of Dravidian architecture. The gopurams are covered in
brightly painted mythological figures.
Other temples that may be visited while in the area
include Chidambaram, Dharasuram, Kumbakonam,
Gangaikondacholapuram, Tiruvannamalai and Gingee.
(Cape Comorin) is at the southernmost tip
of India and is a major pilgrimage centre for Hindus.
There are two rocky islands just off the coast with
boat trips to them.
THE GATEWAY HOTEL, MADURAI (M-T, H)
This hotel has an excellent position on a small hill overlooking the town
and temple. This was originally a British property and some of the rooms
are in the old part of the building. Facilities include a restaurant, bar,
swimming pool, tennis and badminton courts. Gateway is a brand of
the Taj group of hotels.
KADAMBAVANAM, NR MADURAI (M)
Kadambavanam is an ethnic resort and cultural centre. The aim is to
provide an authentic cultural experience of what Tamil Nadu has to offer.
It is located just 25 kms outside Madurai so you can be based here and
travel into Madurai to visit the temple. Accommodation is in comfortable
cottages (arranged in a Tamil Nadu street format) and facilities include
a restaurant, swimming pool and Yoga pavilion as well as the
Cultural Centre.
The SANGAM Group has a hotel in Tanjore, Trichy and Madurai plus
Chidambara Vilas, a converted mansion in Chettinad. ANANDHAM,
SWAMIMALAI (M, H) – winner of an eco tourism award is convenient for
temples in the Tanjore area. The hotel was converted from an 1896 Bangla
(bungalow) and has 30 rooms. The restaurant offers authentic vegetarian
cuisine. The GRT REGENCY, MADURAI (M) with 57 rooms and a small pool
is a short distance from the Temple and a good option in the mid range
bracket. In Kanyakumari the best option is SPARSA (S) – there is a very
limited choice in this town and nothing of high quality.
IDEAL RIVER VIEW RESORT, TANJORE (M)
An attractive riverside resort set in a delightful garden on the outskirts
of Tanjore. The air-conditioned rooms are comfortable and spacious.
Facilities include an outdoor multi-cuisine restaurant, swimming pool,
Ayurveda and yoga centre.
TANJORE HI, TANJORE (M-T, B)
This new and stylish ‘eco-city hotel’ has the same ownership as The Dune
in Pondicherry. It has 15 rooms, an Ayurveda spa, roof top swimming pool
and restaurant offering vegetarian meals using organic ingredients from
their own farm.
BUNGALOW ON THE BEACH, TRANQUEBAR (M, B, H)
Tranquebar is 15 km south of the ancient Chola port of Pumpuhar and makes
a good base for visiting the temples at Kumbakonam and Tanjore. This hotel is
owned by the Neemrana Group. The restored 17th century building was part
of the Danish settlement in this area between 1620 and 1845.
HERITAGE, MADURAI (T, H)
Heritage is an attractive hotel converted from the former British Club
(designed by Geoffrey Bawa). It is set within 17 acres a short distance
from the Temple. All the rooms are stylish and spacious and the villas
have private plunge pools. The swimming pool has been designed to
replicate a temple tank and the restaurant is adjacent to a very large
Banyan Tree - said to be one of the oldest in Tamil Nadu.
KANYAKUMARI
www.KERALACONNECTIONS.co.uk 3332 www.KERALACONNECTIONS.co.uk
The towns of Ooty and Coonoor are hill stations at an
altitude of over 2000 m in the Nilgiri Hills of the Western
Ghats. Ooty (now officially called Udhagamandalam) is
the famous hill station of the Raj period. Coonoor is not as
well known as its neighbour but offers much the same hill
station/tea growing experience and is not as busy. Another
quiet and picturesque hill station in this area is Kotagiri –
offering tea estates and trekking.
SAVOY HOTEL, OOTY (M-T, H)
A colonial hotel on the outskirts of
Ooty with gardens full of familiar
flowers. The spacious rooms have
fireplaces and the dining room
is rosewood panelled. The whole
place is reminiscent of the British
Raj, particularly the Canterbury
Bar. This hotel is part of the Taj
Group of Hotels.
THE TRYST, COONOOR (G)
The Tryst is the home of Dr Rao
and his British wife Ann. It is
situated in a delightful position
on the outskirts of Coonoor.
There are six guest rooms and
the house is full of ‘memorabilia’.
O’LAND ESTATE, NEAR
COONOOR (G)
Situated one hour’s drive from
Coonoor through stunning scenery
this 130 acre organic tea and
coffee estate has seven rooms for
guests. All the staff (other than the
chef) are local tribes people
of the area. This is a great base for
walking, cycling and bird watching.
THE GATEWAY HOTEL,
COONOOR (M-T, H)
A 33 room hotel with old-world
charm and panoramic views
of the valley. Facilities include
restaurant and bar. Gateway
is a brand of the Taj group
of hotels.
Taj Savoy
The Gateway Hotel
Many people visit the Ooty and Coonoor region in order
to ride the Nilgiri Blue Mountain Railway. The ‘toy train’
is a narrow gauge railway running from the plains of
Mettupalayam, through Coonoor and on to Ooty. The
section between Ooty and Coonoor has diesel rolling stock
but the lower and steeper (including gradients of up to 1
in 12.5) section is a rack railway where a steam engine is
used. This is one of Asia’s last remaining steam routes still
operating. It was this train line used for the scenes in the
film A Passage to India and more recently was featured
in the BBC series Indian Hill Railways.
As shown on the BBC programme the trains are not
running all the time. The steep terrain of the area means
that the line is vulnerable to landslides and steam engines
can break down. If you plan to travel to the area only to
see or ride the toy train you need to be aware that it may
be out of service at the time of your visit.
ELEPHANT VALLEY ECO LODGE, NR KODAIKANAL (S)
This is a unique place to stay and if you are more interested in responsible travel
than 5 star luxury then it will suit you. The farm is about 20 km from the centre of
Kodaikanal and activities include horse riding (they have their own stables), bird
watching, walking and trekking. You might also be interested to watch the farming
practises taking place within the local area.
Other hotels in the area include THE CARLTON (M-T) a well established hotel with
a central position overlooking the lake.
Located in the Palani Hills 120 km from Madurai this hill station
makes a good stop on the way to the west coast - an alternative
to Munnar, the hill station on the Kerala side of the border.
Kodaikanal is not as developed as Ooty or Coonoor (Tamil
Nadu’s more famous hill stations) and has a lake in the middle
of town. This is a good area for trekking.
Other accommodation options
in this area include SHERLOCK,
OOTY (G, H) a bungalow with
nine guest bedrooms; McIVER
VILLA, COONOOR (G, H) centrally
positioned with great views and
the option of Italian food and
SUNSHINE BUNGALOW, KOTAGIRI
(G, H) with four rooms, two
lounges and an attentive host.
AAKRITI HOMESTAY, NEAR
COONOOR (G)
Situated on the scenic road to
Kotagiri (20 mins from Coonoor)
this eco-homestay is set within
the family’s organic tea plantation.
There are two guest cottages
adjacent to the home of this
delightful family.
TAMARA, NEAR
COIMBATORE (T)
This tented camp is just under an
hour from Coimbatore (the closest
city to Mettupalayam). It is a beautiful
location and truly off the beaten track.
The closest option to Mettupalayam is
BLACK THUNDER (S) - it is in fact a hotel
attached to a ‘water theme park’ and
simple - but acceptable for one night.
OOTY & HILL STATIONS
THE NILGIRI BLUE MOUNTAIN RAILWAY
KODAIKANAL
KURUMBA VILLAGE
RESORT, KURUMBADI (M)
This resort is situated about
half way between Coonoor and
Mettupalayam and is therefore
an ideal place to stay if you want
to take a trip on the toy train.
Accommodation is in spacious
cottages and there is a swimming
pool and restaurant.

Karnataka is a very large state
(India’s eighth largest) with many
interesting places to see. Most
people come to Karnataka to visit
the abundance of ancient sites. The
capital, Bangalore, is a modern city
(the Silicon Valley of India) with an
international airport.
Karnataka is scenically diverse
containing sections of both the
Deccan plateau and the Western
Ghat mountains. There are five
National Parks and a number of
wildlife sanctuaries. Karnataka’s
320 km Konkan coastline has good
unspoilt beaches but there are few
hotels along the coast.
If you want to visit the sites of
northern Karnataka (including
the world heritage site of Hampi)
you must be prepared to travel
long distances. Currently there
are very few flights to the area so
it usually requires a long road or
rail journey. However the flight
situation is constantly changing
so please ask us for up to date
information.

capital. It is large and sprawling and, with a population
of almost 8 million, is one of Asia’s fastest growing

software and much of this is developed in Bangalore,
helping to boost the city’s wealth. Bangalore has a
new international airport to the north of the city.
A large number of airlines fly to Bangalore (some

or finishing point for a holiday to South India.

This city in southern Karnataka has much to attract the
visitor. Mysore Palace is fascinating to visit (and every
Sunday the whole palace is illuminated by thousands
of light bulbs). The climb up Chamundi Hill seeing
the huge Nandi half way is something that most
people do. Just east of Mysore in the small village of
Somnathpur is the exquisitely carved Hoysala Keshava
Temple built in 1268. Also within visiting distance is
Srirangapatnam with its ancient ruins, the Jain pilgrimage
site of Sravanabelagola with its huge statue of Lord
Gomateshvara and Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary.
The shopping is also good at Mysore which is famous
for its sandalwood carvings, incense and silks. The fruit
and vegetable market is a photographer’s dream.
THE METROPOLE, MYSORE (M-T, H)
This attractive colonial hotel is a popular choice with its central position.
There are 30 rooms and facilities include a restaurant, swimming pool and gym.
THE WINDFLOWER, MYSORE (M-T)
This hotel was designed in a Balinese style and accommodation is in
blocks of rooms overlooking a water feature. Facilities include a large
swimming pool, multi-cuisine restaurant, 24 hour coffee shop, spa, gym
and tennis court.
GITANJALI FARM, MYSORE (G)
This delightful homestay is in a quiet
position near the Lalitha Mahal Palace
yet convenient for the city centre.
Accommodation is in four tastefully
furnished twin/double en suite
rooms in a purpose built annex to the
family home. The owners are keen to
promote responsible tourism, so the
rooms are water-cooled rather than
air-conditioned.
THE GREEN HOTEL,
MYSORE (M, H)
The Chittaranjan Palace was
originally built for Mysore's
princesses and is now a delightful
small hotel. The historic building
was sympathetically restored by a
UK charity and the hotel is a model
of sustainable tourism. The hotel
has won a number of environmental
awards and all profits are distributed
to charitable and environmental
projects in India.
Other hotels in Mysore include the
LALITHA MAHAL PALACE HOTEL (M,
H) which used to be the Maharaja
of Mysore’s Summer Palace and
makes an extremely attractive
hotel on the outskirts of town.
REGAALIS (T) is a modern hotel
with a good reputation. SANDESH
DE PRINCE (M) is centrally located
and a good option in this range.
A bit further out of Mysore is the
BRINDAVAN GARDENS (T, H, B) an
attractive hotel convenient for the
bird sanctuary.

The Hoysala architecture of the temples at Belur and
Halebid dates back to the 12th century. The temples
are exquisitely carved with images of dancers and
musicians as well as Hindu gods. The sacred Jain site at
Sravanabelagola is situated on the road between Bangalore
and Hassan. The monolithic statue of Gomateshvara
stands on the top of Indragiri Hill and is approached by
more than 600 steps cut into the granite. Shoes must be
removed and it is advisable to wear socks as the stone
can become very hot indeed. Anyone unable to climb the
steps can be carried up in a chair. The towns of Hassan or
Chikmagalur are the best bases for visiting these sites.
The SOUTHERN STAR (M) is
situated in the town of Hassan and
also makes a convenient base for
sightseeing. THE SERAI HOTEL &
SPA (T-L) at Chikmagalur is a smart
contemporary hotel with 29 villas
in a 70 acre coffee plantation.
Facilities include a swimming pool,
spa, restaurant, bar and coffee
shop.
THE GATEWAY HOTEL,
CHIKMAGALUR (M)
This is a comfortable hotel with
spacious rooms, a good-sized
swimming pool in the garden, a
restaurant, bar and games room.
Chikmagalur is a coffee growing
area to the north of Belur and
Halebid and is therefore a good
choice if you are coming from
Hampi or Goa. Gateway is a
brand of the Taj group of hotels.
HOYSALA VILLAGE,
NR HASSAN (S-M)
A pleasant ‘village style’ resort
in a rural location with lovely
gardens, a swimming pool and
Ayurveda Centre. The cottage
rooms are rustic yet spacious
and the restaurant offers a
wide choice of dishes. From this
resort it is possible to visit the
surrounding countryside and
villages on foot, by bicycle or
bullock cart as well as visiting
the temples of Belur and Halebid
that are situated to the north.
The Gateway Hotel
Set in a boulder strewn landscape along the banks of the Tungabhadra River the World
Heritage Site of Hampi was once the capital of one of the largest Hindu empires in
Indian history. However this amazing city was devastated in 1565 by a Muslim siege.
The ruins that remain are spread over a large area and you need a few days to see
everything. We suggest that you use a guide book to get the best out of Hampi. Places
we particularly recommend include the Vittala Temple, with the stone chariot in the
courtyard, the Lotus Mahal and the Elephant Stables.
HAMPI BOULDERS, NARAYANPET,
NR HAMPI (S)
This small and unusual hotel has a
wonderful rural location scattered
with boulders. The rooms are in simply
furnished stone cottages. Meals are
cooked to order and served in the open
sided restaurant. There is also a natural
swimming pool.
HOTEL MALLIGI, HOSPET (S)
This hotel is in Hospet, the closest
town to Hampi. It has comfortable
rooms and there is a good restaurant
and swimming pool.
The choice of hotels is currently
very limited at Hampi. The GOLDEN
CHARIOT luxury train operates to Hampi
so this is another way of visiting this
World Heritage Site.
The small town of Gokarna
is renowned as a pilgrimage
centre and for its wide,
unspoilt beaches. With its
temples and traditional houses
set in narrow streets it is a
world away from the more
cosmopolitan Goa (just 30 km
north) and visitors should be
aware of this and dress suitably
when visiting the town.
The nearest airport to Gokarna
is Goa, two and a half
hours away.
SWASWARA, GOKARNA (T)
Owned by the environmentally
friendly CGH Earth group this
resort is marketed as a ‘Life Style
Resort’ and consequently there
are minimum stay requirements.
The focus is on Yoga, meditation,
Ayurveda and there is also a pool.
Accommodation is in 27 spacious
and uniquely designed garden villas.
OM BEACH RESORT,
GOKARNA (S)
This resort has just 12 spacious
air-conditioned rooms overlooking
the beach. Facilities include a
multi-cuisine restaurant, well
stocked bar and Ayurveda Centre.
BIJAPURThis town offers the Deccan’s finest Muslim monuments.
For three hundred years it was the capital of a succession
of powerful Muslim rulers whose legacy remains in the
form of many fine buildings. Gol Gumbaz is the most
famous of these and its huge dome complete with a
whispering gallery is a popular tourist attraction.
The accommodation in Bijapur is very basic.
The MADHUVAN INTERNATIONAL is currently the best option.
BADAMI, AIHOLE & PATTADAKALThese quiet villages were once capital cities of the
Chalukyas who ruled this part of the Deccan. At
Badami there are temples cut into caves. Aihole boasts
125 temples and the temples of Pattadakal are so well
maintained that they attained World Heritage Site status.
BADAMI COURT, BADAMI (S)
This is a simple hotel but it is the best in the area. It has a restaurant and
a swimming pool in the gardens. Badami Court can be used as a base for
making a day trip to Bijapur.

Orange County - Kabini
The National Park at Nagarhole covers an area of 640
sq km. The dammed Kabini River has created a huge
lake which provides a vital water source for the animals
during the dry season. The forest is moist deciduous
providing thick jungle, an excellent habitat for a variety
of animals. The wildlife seen at any National Park is
always a matter of luck but tigers are sometimes seen.
Bandipur National Park is 80 km south of Mysore and
covers 880 sq km. The landscape is dry deciduous forest
and sightings of wild elephant are common.
ORANGE COUNTY - KABINI (T)
This lovely resort is bordered on two sides by the Kabini River and was
built using local materials in authentic Kadu Kuruba village style. The
Kadu Kuruba are the gentle tribal people who live in the Nagarhole area.
The deluxe accommodation comes in two styles – mud walled, thatch
roofed huts with Jacuzzi pool or with private plunge pool. Vehicle safaris
are offered into Nagarhole National Park. Other activities include boat
safaris on the river, bamboo rafting and cycling through the local villages.
Orange County aim to make their hotels as environmentally and socially
responsible as possible. They have a range of initiatives to help the local
economy, they own windmills and have reverse osmosis machines to
reduce the use of plastic water bottles.
Further accommodation in this area includes: THE SERAI (T) with resorts
at both Nagarhole/Kabini and Bandipur (previously called Cicada);
WINDFLOWER (Tusker Trails) at Bandipur which has recently been
completely renovated.
All the resorts in the national parks offer a wide range of activities which
may include jungle safaris, coracle river rides, fishing, trekking etc.
THE BISON, KABINI (M-T)
This is a tented camp situated at the confluence of the Bandipur and
Nagarhole National Parks. The lounge and dining areas are built on stilts
overlooking the Kabini waterways. Facilities include a pool and bar.
DHOLE'S DEN, BANDIPUR (M)
Dhole's Den (named after the Asiatic wild dog) is a jungle lodge with
five comfortable rooms and a great base to explore Bandipur. The resort
practises responsible tourism including obtaining power from their own
windmill and solar panels; bio digestion and rain water harvesting.
ORANGE COUNTY – COORG (T)
Orange County is a delightful resort set in the midst of a coffee
plantation and surrounded by forests. Accommodation is in cottages
located near the main restaurant and swimming pool. There are also
spacious Presidential Villas and Lake Facing Private Pool Villas where
there is another swimming pool and restaurant. This hotel is part of
the environmentally friendly Orange County Group and they have a
range of activities on offer to enable their guests to learn about Coorg,
the surrounding countryside and the business of coffee plantations.
BEL HOME, COORG (G)
This homestay is situated in central Coorg and offers the opportunity
to see the area. Your friendly hosts are very knowledgeable about the
culture and history of the region. Accommodation is offered in an
annex adjacent to the main house and two rustic style cottages.
COORGCoorg used to be an independent princely state but it
is now just a district of Karnataka called Kodagu. The
light skinned people of this area are called Kodavas
(or Coorgis) and are thought to have migrated from
Kurdistan. They still retain many of their traditions
including their own language, style of dress and cuisine.
Within the area, which is forested and has many coffee
plantations, there is a Tibetan settlement, the largest
outside Tibet. There is an elephant camp and fishing
is a popular pastime in Coorg – the famous Mahseer
fish can be found in the rivers.
Other accommodation options in Coorg include AMBATTY GREENS RESORT
(M) a new resort near the golf course; AMANVANA (T, B) a small (19 rooms)
stylish property and ELEPHANT CORRIDOR (G) a delightful plantation
homestay set in a coffee estate.

The tiny state of Goa is famous for its
sandy beaches, vibrant markets and
nightlife and also offers a wide range
of hotels. Goa was colonised by the
Portuguese in the early 16th Century
and not ‘liberated’ from Portuguese rule
until 1961. In the 1960s Goa was a major
stop on the ‘hippy trail’ and is now
popular with the charter operators.
Goa’s well established history of
tourism gives it a very different
atmosphere from the rest of India.
GOA
This is where you will find the best beaches and a small number of mostly top quality,
five star hotels with beach front positions. South Goa does not offer the range of shops
and restaurants to be found in North Goa and the further south you go the more your
hotel needs to satisfy all your requirements. The main beaches are (running north to
south) Bogmalo, Majorda, Colva, Benaulim and Cavelossim.
COCONUT CREEK,
BOGMALO (M)
This is a delightful, small,
comfortable resort just 5 km
from the airport. Unusually
for South Goa it is not a 5 star
luxury hotel. The 20 rooms (in
ten bungalows) are minimalist
and stylish (with and without
air-conditioning). The beach
at Bogmalo is a short stroll
through the resort’s coconut
groves. There is plenty of shade
in the gardens and around the
good sized swimming pool.
KENILWORTH, UTORDA (T)
This hotel is 20 minutes from the airport and has 107 rooms in 14 acres
of beach front land. The comfortable rooms are within the main building
which has a Portuguese colonial ambience. This 5 star hotel’s facilities
include restaurants (Goan, Continental, Indian, beach front grill), bars,
very large swimming pool and an excellent spa.
PARK HYATT,
AROSSIM (T-L)
This hotel is just 15 minutes
from the airport and set in 45
acres right on the beach. It is a
large hotel with 250 rooms but
the design of the resort (with
low level rooms in clusters)
makes it feel more intimate.
This hotel has what is claimed
to be the largest swimming
pool in India and an award
winning spa.
TAJ EXOTICA, BENAULIM (T-L)
The Taj Exotica, 40 minutes from the airport, is set in 56 acres of land
and has 140 rooms. Accommodation is offered in a variety of room
types including villas and suites. Facilities include a large swimming pool,
nine-hole golf course, pitch and putt, tennis courts, jogging track, gym
and spa. The choice of restaurants includes Mediterranean, Oriental and
Goan plus coffee shop and bars.
THE LEELA, CAVELOSSIM (T-L)
This large hotel is set on 75 acres of land is just under an hour from the
airport. It has a range of comfortable rooms, villas and suites. The wide
range of facilities includes a 12 hole, par 3 golf course and an internationally
acclaimed spa. There is a range of restaurants and bars to choose from.
NORTH GOA North Goa is the more developed part, much favoured
by the package tour companies. If you want to buy gifts
(the famous Anjuna flea market takes place every
Wednesday) or like to have a wide choice of places to
eat then this is the area to head for. We have inspected
the hotels in this area and, with a few exceptions, do not
feel that the beach hotels will appeal to our clientele.
However, there are a few delightful boutique and colonial
properties inland. This gives the best of both worlds – the
ability to visit the popular beaches and then to retreat
from the night clubs and beach parties for a good night’s
sleep. The main beaches (listed north to south) are
Anjuna, Baga, Calangute and Candolim.
NILAYA HERMITAGE, ARPORA (M-T, B)
This stylish hotel is full of character. Each of the ten air-conditioned rooms
has a different ‘cosmic’ theme. The hotel is situated in a quiet position on
a small hill inland from Anjuna Beach. Transfers to the beach are arranged
by the hotel and take ten minutes by car. Facilities include a good sized
swimming pool, gym, steam room and Ayurveda, and main restaurant
overlooking the pool.
PRESA DI GOA, NAGOA (S-M, H, B)
This is a country house situated in the small village of Nagoa with Baga
and Calangute beaches just 10 minutes drive away. There are 5 junior
suites and 2 deluxe rooms. All are designed in the Indo-Portuguese style
and furnished with traditional colonial furniture. There is a delightful
garden with swimming pool, open air restaurant and bar.
VIVANTA BY TAJ - FORT
AGUADA, SINQUERIM (T)
This is a good hotel at the
southern tip of North Goa –
making it convenient for the
airport (45 minutes) yet away
from the busy beaches. There is
a wide range of room types and
a choice of restaurants including
Italian, seafood and multi-cuisine.
There is a swimming pool, sports
complex, fitness centre etc. Some
of the facilities are situated at
the VIVANTA BY TAJ – HOLIDAY
VILLAGE (T) next door. Customers
from each hotel are welcome to
use the amenities at the other.
FORT TIRACOL,
TIRACOL (M, H, B)
This unusual hotel is situated on
the northern (Maharashtra) side of
the Tiracol River, which forms part
of Goa’s northern border. Access
from the rest of Goa is via a ferry
that runs regularly throughout the
day. The views across the estuary
and along the coast are superb.
There is no swimming pool and
access to a beach in either Goa
or Maharashtra is by car (arranged
by the hotel).
SIOLIM HOUSE, SIOLIM (M, H, B)
This 300 year old villa once belonged to the Governor of Macau.
It has been sympathetically restored to create a small hotel/guesthouse.
The hotel has just seven en suite rooms - all different and spacious.
There is a restaurant, lounge, games room, garden and swimming pool.
The nearest beach (a small quiet one) is 5-6 km away.

MumbaiMumbai (or Bombay As it used to be called) is India’s commercial capital. It is a busy,
noisy and extremely crowded city – but there is much to attract the short stay
visitor. Mumbai Airport is a major hub and if the connections are not good why
not spend a night or two in the area and experience this exciting city? Things to
do include visiting the Gateway of India, Victoria Terminus, Colaba Market, the dhobi
ghats, Elephanta Island and a tour of the Bollywood film studios. You can also
visit the slums featured in the film Slumdog Millionaire.

and the original heritage wing)
and a wide range of facilities

TROPICAL ISLANDSMany people like the idea of relaxing on a tropical island at the end of
a cultural tour. After a sightseeing trip around south India you can
go to the Lakshadweep or Andaman islands (both part of India) or the
Maldives. All three island groups offer scuba diving and snorkelling
as well as great beaches.
BANGARAM ISLAND RESORT, LAKSHADWEEP (S)
This is a simple resort with accommodation in huts and limited facilities.
It is currently operated by the eco friendly hotel group CGH Earth whose
ethos was to keep the environmental impact to a minimum and retain
the natural beauty of the island. There is a dive and water sports centre.
LAKSHADWEEP ISLANDS
BAREFOOT AT HAVELOCK (M-T)
Havelock Island, reached by ferry from Port Blair, is perhaps one of India’s
best kept secrets with beaches thought to be some of the best in Asia (TIME
magazine). Accommodation is in cottages constructed using local materials.
The resort has a PADI dive centre and other activities include kayaking and
local nature walks.
FORTUNE RESORT BAY ISLAND, PORT BLAIR (M)
This well established hotel is considered to be the best in town. Facilities
include a multi-cuisine restaurant and swimming pool (sea water).
The flights to Chennai do not always connect with the ferry from Havelock
so it is often necessary to have at least one night in Port Blair.

The BEAUTIFUL Lakshadweep ISLANDS
are geographically part of the same
chain of islands as the Maldives
but are a Union Territory of India.
ANDAMAN ISLANDSThe Andaman and Nicobar islands are 1,000
kms off the east coast of India. The 500 or so
islands represent India’s most remote state.
The islands are particularly attractive to SCUBA divers
as some of the marine life to be found along the fringing
reefs is unique to the area.

SPECIAL interests
There are many Wildlife Sanctuaries and National Parks in
South India. Some are small and not very rewarding in terms
of animal sightings and others are in areas where visitors are not
encouraged. We list what we consider to be the best in terms
of animal sightings, scenery, activities on offer and accessibility.
Many of the parks are in the Western Ghat mountains, which
are considered to be one of the world’s 10 biodiversity ‘hotspots’.
Although these hotspots are confined to just 1.4% of the
planet’s surface, they contain 44% of the plant and 33% of the
animal species. Within the various ranges of the Ghats there
are 5,000 species of flowering plants, 139 mammals, 508 birds
(16 endemic) and 179 amphibians. At least 325 of the species
found here are considered to be threatened. Thus, for nature
enthusiasts, the Western Ghats can be an extremely rewarding
destination.
You must be aware that parks are sometimes closed because of
animal breeding, fire risk etc. Notification may be at very short
notice. Please note that animal sightings are a matter of luck and
there are no guarantees as to what you might see. Go with an
open mind and enjoy the scenery and experience and consider
any sighting you may have as a bonus.
The National Parks of India are controlled by state government
departments. Restricting the number of visitors to some parks
by not granting planning permission for hotels in the area might
be frustrating to us but it is good for the wildlife. The forestry
or parks departments also control the activities that take
place within the parks. This is why you will find different
activities in the various parks (eg jeep safaris are available
at some parks but not others).
WILDLIFE
NILGIRI BIOSPHERE (KARNATAKA, TAMIL NADU & KERALA)
Comprising wildlife sanctuaries spanning three states the Nilgiri Biosphere
was created to protect the extraordinary diversity of habitat and wildlife in
this area. The Nilgiri Biosphere is a huge area (6,000 sq km) and Bandipur in
Karnataka, Mudumalai in Tamil Nadu and Wayanad in Kerala are all included.
The main road between Ooty and Mysore runs through Bandipur and
Mudumalai so it is possible to do some wildlife viewing as you pass through.
Bandipur was declared a sanctuary in 1931 and in 1973 became part of
Project Tiger as it was thought to be home to around 70 tigers. The diversity
of its terrain makes this an ideal habitat for elephant, leopard, dhole, gaur
and sloth bears.
Mudumalai has a varied landscape of dense deciduous forests, scrub jungle,
grassland and swamps and provides a habitat for a rich diversity of wildlife.
Wayanad is the second largest sanctuary in Kerala and is split into two
separate reserves called Muthanga and Tholpetty. It is lush rainforest (moist
deciduous) with many animals. The management of this reserve emphasises
the importance of scientific conservation and consideration
for the local tribes.
Silent Valley National Park (tropical rain forest) is also part of the Nilgiri
Biosphere and is home to a thriving troupe of lion-tailed macaques, but
the difficult terrain, remoteness and the fact that there is nowhere to
stay means that this is Kerala’s least visited park.
PERIYAR WILDLIFE SANCTUARY (KERALA)
This is possibly the most accessible Wildlife Sanctuary in South
India (four hours from the backwaters) and consequently there
is a wide range of hotels in the adjacent town of Thekkady. It is
an attractive park with a huge lake created by the British over
100 years ago when they dammed the Periyar River in order to
provide water to people in Tamil Nadu. The animals that may be
seen here include elephant, deer, the Malabar giant squirrel, gaur,
mongoose, otter, wild boar and over 260 species of bird. There
are tigers and leopards but these are rarely seen.
NAGARHOLE WILDLIFE SANCTUARY (KARNATAKA)
Nagarhole offers diverse terrain from moist deciduous forests,
which cover much of the sanctuary, to grassy swamps that
support a growth of green grass all year. Numerous rivers
run through Nagarhole which enhances the wildlife viewing
experience. There are now some good accommodation options
within easy reach of Nagarhole and this sanctuary has proved
to be very good for wildlife viewing with recorded sightings
of tigers, leopards and sloth bears as well as mongooses and
a good range of birds.
INDIRA GANDHI (ANAMALAI)
WILDLIFE SANCTUARY (TAMIL NADU)
Anamalai has beautiful mountain scenery but
is remote and not much visited as there is no
accommodation in the area.
PARAMBIKULAM WILDLIFE
SANCTUARY (KERALA)
This sanctuary is adjacent to Anamalai so also
remote. Its forests (mostly teak) are home to
a wide variety of mammals, reptiles and birds.
Parambikulam has one of the largest populations
of gaur (bison) and is also one of the few places
where lion-tailed macaques can be found.
THE RANGANATHITTU
BIRD SANCTUARY
(KARNATAKA)
This small haven (just north
of Mysore) situated on the
banks of the Cauvery River,
comprises six islets that attract
large numbers of water birds
(especially during the nesting
season between June and
November). Small boats take
you close to the islands where
the trees are covered with
many species of birds. You may
also catch sight of a basking
crocodile or playful otters.
CHINNAR WILDLIFE
SANCTUARY
(KERALA)
Chinnar is a two hour
drive from Munnar and is
positioned in a rain shadow
which makes it considerably
drier than its neighbour,
Eravikulam. Chinnar is
considered to be a birding
hotspot with 225 species
recorded to date. Most come
here to see the grizzled giant
squirrels - healthy numbers
thrive here amongst the
thorny scrub (dry deciduous
forest).
ERAVIKULAM NATIONAL PARK
(KERALA)
This park is within easy reach of Munnar and
is home to the rare and endangered Nilgiri Tahr.
The rolling grasslands and high level sholas are
somewhat reminiscent of the Alps. It is a very
pleasant place to walk and most people see
so many Tahrs that it is hard to believe they
are endangered (what you need to bear in
mind is that they are found nowhere else).
Please note that Eravikulam is closed for much
of January and February when it is breeding
time. The exact date depends on the Tahrs.
VEDANTHANGAL BIRD
SANCTUARY
(TAMIL NADU)
Considered to be the oldest
bird sanctuary in India,
Vedanthangal is situated in the
Kanchipuram district of Tamil
Nadu (90 km from Chennai).
This is one of India’s most
spectacular bird sanctuaries
with more than 30,000
migratory birds. It is a small
and relaxed place, where guests
can watch from the path at
the water’s edge or from the
watchtower (fitted out with
binoculars).
THATTEKKAD BIRD SANCTUARY (KERALA)
Thattekkad is the best bird sanctuary in Kerala. Around 300
species of bird may be found there, including Ceylon frog-mouths,
Malabar grey hornbills, jungle mynas, rose-billed rollers and
various woodpeckers.

FOOD & COOKERYMany people consider the cuisine a major factor when
selecting a holiday. The food of India - curry - is famous and
loved throughout the world (particularly in the UK where it
is the most popular food to eat out).
South India’s culinary heritage is quite different from that
of the North and as most ‘Indian’ restaurants in the UK are
either North Indian or Bangladeshi you may find that many
of the dishes are completely unknown to you. For breakfast
you may be offered dosa, iddly or vada with sambar and
coconut chutney, appam or puttu. The South Indians love
chillies so some dishes can be very spicy (although can be
toned down on request). Rice is the staple food and this
is consumed far more than the Indian breads so popular
in North India. Food is mostly cooked in coconut oil
(rather than ghee) and vegetarian food is widely available
throughout the south. In fact we believe that South India.
AYISHA MANZIL, TELLICHERRY,
NORTH KERALA
Ayisha Manzil offers a gourmet cookery course
called TELLICHERRY PEPPER. This is a ‘hands on’
cookery course (lasting one, two or more days)
and specialising in the Moplah food of the
region. Each day you will have an outing (eg
to the fish or spice market) followed by a two
hour cookery session when you will prepare
one meat dish, one seafood dish, one rice
or bread and one dessert. Recipes for all the
dishes will be provided at the end. The hostess
at Ayisha Manzil is Faiza, a well known cook
who has appeared on TV cookery shows in
India and the UK. There is also much to do and
see in the area if you are not cooking.
MUNDACKAL HOMESTAY,
NEAR THATTEKKAD, KERALA
Daisy Mundackal is known for her generous
spreads of food and guests are often
overwhelmed by the range of dishes placed
in front of them. The food prepared here is
‘Christian’ which differs from the Muslim Moplah
food of North Kerala and Hindu cuisine. Daisy
offers ‘hands on’ cookery lessons in her kitchen.
PARADISA PLANTATION,
NEAR THEKKADY, KERALA
Cookery lessons in authentic Kerala cuisine as
well as North Indian dishes are available here.
Demonstrations are also offered.
NIMMY PAUL, COCHIN, KERALA
Nimmy Paul is a delightful lady who lives in
Cochin and offers cookery lessons in her home.
The sessions are either at lunch or dinner time
and include a demonstration/lesson followed
by a meal. Nimmy’s sessions are very popular
not only with our customers but also with
groups so, if you want a lesson, early booking is
recommended.
Other places offering cookery lessons include
Mannaas Veedu, Serenity, Tranquil, Aanavilasam,
Olive Brook, Dewalokam and almost all the
homestays and guesthouses. Hotels that offer
cookery demonstrations include Spice Village,
Coconut Lagoon, Marari Beach and Windermere.
Note: Cookery lessons must be booked
in advance and there will be a charge.
Demonstrations are usually complimentary
and available to everyone.
VISALAM, CHETTINAD, TAMIL NADU
Chettinad food is popular throughout South
India. It is mainly meat based (reflecting the
wealth of the people) although vegetarians are
catered for. Visalam has an interactive kitchen
with space for visitors so you can see how the
chef creates his dishes.
GITANJALI, MYSORE, KARNATAKA
Here you can have a two to three hour cookery
lesson (with printed recipes) learning how to
make traditional food from the Coorg region
of Karnataka.
is possibly the easiest place in the world for vegetarians and
vegans to travel and eat well. We have created a South Indian
food list and this is available on request for our customers.
Most hotels in the south serve the local cuisine but many
of the larger hotels will also serve North Indian dishes
(many even have a tandoor so can make naan bread etc)
and may also offer Continental and Chinese dishes. For
home cooking we recommend you spend some time in
one or more of the numerous homestays/guesthouses or
stay on a houseboat.
If your interest in food extends from simply eating it to
learning to cook, below there is a list of accommodation
where cookery lessons or demonstrations are offered.
This list is expanding all the time so please ask us for
up to date information.

TRAIN TRAVELIndia is famous for having one of the largest rail networks in the
world and the railways are much loved and used by the locals
as a convenient and reasonable way of travelling through their
huge country. Many of our customers like to include a train
journey in their tour and we are very happy to advise the best
way to do this.
In addition to the mainline trains India has some specialist
trains. There are a number of narrow gauge mountain train lines
(often called ‘toy trains’). In South India there is the Nilgiri Blue
Mountain Railway operating to Ooty (see page 35) and another
running up to Matheran, near Mumbai in Maharashtra.
India also operates some luxury trains. A luxury train is
designed to take tourists on a particular route. There is a
fixed routing (often around 7 nights long) with pre-arranged
departure dates. Guests have their own cabins and remain on
board for the duration. On arrival at the places of interest the
guests are taken (by road) to the sites and guides are provided.
It is a great way of seeing a large number of places within a
short space of time as travel is often overnight. The fact that
once on the train you do not have to continually pack and
unpack is appealing to many people. It is also a very sociable
way to travel and is consequently idea for single travellers.
Most luxury trains operate in North India but in the south
there is THE GOLDEN CHARIOT. This train has two different
routings – both start and finish in Bangalore.
THE PRIDE OF THE SOUTH
– starts in Bangalore and visits
Kabini/Nagarhole, Mysore, Hassan
(Belur and Halebid), Hampi, Badami
(Pattadakal) and Goa.
THE SPLENDOUR OF THE
SOUTH – visits Chennai,
Mahabalipuram, Pondicherry,
Trichy (Tanjore), Kanyakumari,
the backwaters and Cochin.
Both are 7 night tours – but the Golden Chariot will allow
customers to do a part trip. This is excellent news for people
wishing to visit Hampi as getting there by other means is not
easy and once there the accommodation choices are limited.
You could for example board the Golden Chariot at Mysore
and complete the latter part of the journey spending four (or
five) nights on train - visiting and sightseeing Mysore, Hassan,
Hampi, Badami etc and finishing at Goa (or returning on the
train to Bangalore).

OTHER INTERESTSAYURVEDA & YOGAAyurveda is an ancient Vedic science of India and concentrates on mind
and body when treating ailments. Ayurveda offers a holistic approach and
treatments are based on herbal preparations intended to strengthen the
body’s own immune system. Ayurvedic doctors aim to prevent disease,
as well as cure it, without side effects. European people are said to have
particular success with treatments for migraine, stress and joint pain.
Many hotels listed in this brochure have Ayurveda Treatment Centres and
these will be included in the description. Yoga is also offered at a wide
range of hotels.
TREKKING, CYCLING, KAYAKING & ADVENTURE ACTIVITIESIf you like a more active holiday then again South India is able to satisfy
your needs. We work with a specialist adventure company based in Kerala
and they are able to offer a range of activities. There are a number of
trekking opportunities available in the Western Ghats. This can be for a
day, allowing you to return to your hotel for the night, or for longer with
nights spent camping or in forest lodges. Mountain biking is popular and
there are a number of routes on offer depending on your level of fitness.
Kayaking is available on the rivers and backwaters. If you would like to
include some adventure activities in your holiday please tell us.
SCUBA DIVING & SNORKELLINGAlthough the water is warm
enough and there is plenty
of sunlight, there is virtually
no coral growth around the
mainland of India. This is because
of the large numbers of fast
flowing rivers that empty into
the sea leading to poor visibility.
Therefore, if you want to include
some diving or snorkelling during
your holiday to South India you
need to include a visit to the
offshore islands (Lakshadweep,
Andaman or Maldives).
ELEPHANTSIn addition to seeing wild elephants in the national parks there are also
opportunities to interact with domestic elephants. There are government
training camps dotted around South India and many welcome visitors.
The most accessible are Kodanad near Thattekkad and Konni in
Pathanamthitta. Punnathur Kota at Guruvayoor houses many temple
elephants and the knowledgeable mahouts will show you around. There is
an elephant camp and orphanage in Coorg and you are allowed to wash
and ride the elephants (for a fee). Elephant Junction at Periyar is a good
place for a close interaction with a domestic elephant. You can wash and
ride one and also take an elephant shower (sit on the back and be sprayed
with water from the trunk). There is an ‘ocean swimming’ elephant on
Havelock Island in the Andaman Islands.
Many domestic/temple elephants are kept by individuals in small villages
and may be visited. There is a village with a number of elephants near
Kollam and an elephant that lives near Serenity. Guests are allowed
to help wash and ride her (for a fee). However, do not plan your whole
holiday around these working elephants because there is no guarantee
that they will be at home when you visit.
FESTIVALSThere are festivals taking place all over India throughout the year. Often
the problem is ensuring you are in the right place at the right time to
catch one. Apart from a few (eg the Thrissur Pooram) the dates are
uncertain as they are based on astrological tables. Many festival dates
are posted on websites and then change at short notice. However, many
people are lucky and stumble across a local festival and in most cases find
that the locals are very welcoming.
THE ARTSSouthern India has a wide range of arts on offer and the different states
often have their own individual art forms. These include the dance forms
of Bharatanatyam and Mohiniyattam, the ritual performances of Kathakali
and Theyyam, Carnatic music and mural painting. The performing arts
of Kerala are taught at the academy (the Kerala Kalamandalam) at
Cheruthuruthi and visitors are welcome. Many of the larger hotels and
resorts offer live performances. Cochin has a variety of art options
available including Greenix Village (a cultural arts centre) and a number
of Kathakali theatres. The CGH Earth group of hotels (based in Cochin)
support local visual artists by hosting residencies and camps and the
resulting work can be seen in their gallery in Cochin. Between Chennai
and Mahabalipuram is Dakshina Chitra a cultural living museum of art,
architecture, crafts and performing arts. Just outside Madurai you can
stay at a resort attached to a cultural centre – Kadambavanam.
HISTORICAL SITES, MONUMENTS & TEMPLESBoth Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have
many places of historical interest, some
of which are World Heritage Sites, eg
Hampi and Pattadakal in Karnataka;
Mahabalipuram and the Brihadishwara
Temple at Tanjore in Tamil Nadu.
The Hindu temples at Belur, Halebid,
Somnathpur and Aihole in Karnataka
and Kanchipuram, Trichy and Madurai
in Tamil Nadu are justly famous, as
are the sites of other religions (eg the
Jain statue of Lord Gomateshvara
at Sravanabelagola and the Muslim
monument of Gol Gumbaz at Bijapur).
Palaces such as the Royal Palace at
Mysore and the Padmanabhapuram (or
Wooden Palace) south of Trivandrum
can also be visited. Kerala has less
to offer in the way of temples and
monuments (most of its attractions
are scenic) but Cochin has a number
of old churches, a Synagogue and
the Mattancherry Palace. Access to
temples for non-Hindus in Kerala is
restricted but there are a few where
visitors are welcomed including the
Parthasarthi Temple at Arunmula and
Parassinikadavu Temple at Kannur.
BEACHESSouth India has a huge coastline with many golden sand beaches fringed
by palm trees - much of it is not developed. Kerala’s main beach resorts
are Kovalam in the south and nearby Varkala. In central Kerala is the
Mararikulam area and in north Kerala the area around Bekal is gradually
being developed. In Tamil Nadu the main beach area is south of Chennai
along the Coromandel coast. Karnataka’s coast is not as developed and
most people wanting beach accommodation stay in Goa.
Visitors should bear in mind that tourism is still relatively new to South
India and therefore the beaches are still used by the locals (for fishing etc)
as well as tourists. This means that they are not be as clean as you may
like. Also you should be aware that the waters around the southern coast
of India can often have strong currents and you should seek local advice
before swimming in the sea. If you are looking for fine coral sand, clean
beaches and clear water then you need to leave the mainland and head
for the offshore islands.
MOUNTAINSThe Western Ghat mountains
extend 1,600 km from north
of Mumbai almost to the tip
of India (Kanyakumari) and
separate the Deccan Plateau
from a narrow coastal strip on
the Arabian Sea. They contain
the highest mountains in India
after the Himalayas and the
average elevation is 1,200m
above sea level. There are a
number of large and important
rivers in the area and they
are responsible for draining
India of almost 40% of its rain
resulting in some spectacular
waterfalls. If you want to enjoy
inspiring mountain scenery
there are plenty of places that
you can visit. The best choice of
accommodation can be found
in the hill stations and wildlife
sanctuaries.
If you are interested including any of the above or have
other interests not mentioned – please contact us.
SHOPPINGGenerally the range of shopping will be better in the larger towns and
cities – eg Bangalore, Chennai, Cochin. If you are looking for antiques then
the Jew Town area of Cochin and Chettinad in Tamil Nadu are the areas to
head for. Kanchipuram near Chennai is the place to go for silks and hand
weaving. Handicrafts are available throughout the region and the best
prices are likely to be in the government owned shops (where items are
priced). Spices are also widely available and much fresher than you can
buy at home. Body products (eg soap, shampoo, toothpaste) made with
natural materials are also widely available. For Indian style clothes that
you can wear at home we recommend the Fabindia shops – there is one
in most large towns.
HOMESTAYSIf you would like to stay with a family
then there are many homestay options
in Kerala (see pages 22 and 23). There
are fewer in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka
but new properties are opening all the
time - so for up to date information
please contact us.
