“Coach” Rob Pelletier is preparing to open his sidewalk hot dog and sausage emporium in front of the Main Event Mixed Martial Arts and Boxing Studio. The Keremeos entrepreneur wants to make his hot dog stand a tourist attraction of sorts.

The year 2014 is sure to go down in Keremeos history as the year of the Barbeque War on Seventh Avenue.

Then again, maybe not.Residents of the village could

be forgiven for thinking that a culinary war had broken out amongst at least a couple of downtown businesses this spring

when it seemed like barbeques were popping up in the down-town core like dandelions on the lawn after a warm spring rain.

The first appearance of a barbeque on the sidewalk took place in late April when Mark Mudahy of MJ’s Pizza and Ca-ribbean Foods set one up under a temporary awning in front of his establishment. He’s been offering smokies since then on an off an on basis, according to

the directives stipulated on the temporary permit issued him by Interior Health.

Shortly after Mark set up and began selling his smokies, enticing pedestrian traf c with the mouth watering emanations of sauteed grilled onions, a barbeque appeared across the street in front of the Main Event Mixed Martial Arts and Boxing Studio.

Other merchants in the down-

town core began wondering what was going on - as did residents.

“There’s going to be so many lunch time barbeques in town, that everyone is going to starve,” observed Ox Yoke Collectables owner Geoff Berg whimsically one afternoon.

“I wonder who’s going to be next to set up a barbeque.

“Maybe I should.”

Other businesses lightheartedly wondered the same thing. It cer-tainly seemed as though Keremeos was being overrun with barbeques - as nice as it was to finally see some activity in the business block that was also bringing with it some lunchtime choices to existing food fare.

Turns out, the barbeque war doesn’t even amount to a hot dog skirmish.

To date, Coach Rob and partner Donna’s barbeque has yet to sell a dog - he hopes to be in business the first week of June, as he has had to get Interior Health approval and the appropriate training in order to get going. The original idea - of set-ting up a street venue for hot dogs and smokies - came from Coach Rob, who verbalized his intentions

last fall. Turns out, he’s not the least bit

annoyed Mark was the first to front the idea.

“We get along fine,” Coach Rob said, sentiments echoed by Mari Lindley, who is managing Mark’s outdoor cookery.

“We both understand that rather than being competitors, we’re pro-viding choices for our customers, giving them more reason to stop in the downtown core.”

“We’re about to get our oper-ating license,” said Lindley, who hopes to move their operation into a hot dog cart that will operate at the west end of the Keremeos Bypass. Up until now, Mark’s bar-beque has operated under a series of temporary permits.

Coach Rob plans to theme his

hot dog stand, having already named it the Hot Dog and Sausage Emporium. The offerings will come with a wide variety of regular and unique condiments, and the names will reflect the businesses’ main focus.

“I’m going to be selling Joe Lou-is Brown Bombers and feature the K Mountain Super Dog,” Coach Rob said. “Kids like the traditional style of hot dogs, so we’ll have the Mike Tyson Teenie Weenie, as well as a Smack ‘n Cheese hot dog.” There will also be a veggie dog on the menu.

The Hot Dog and Sausage Em-porium is expected to be in opera-tion the first week of June. Look for Mark’s hot dog and smokie stand near the west end of the Keremeos Bypass.

Warming temperatures in the South Okana-gan - Similkameen over the past week has resulted in increasing bee activity in local hives.

Bruce Bertram (right) of Kaleden has had a life long passion for bee keeping, which he once made a full time business of in Manitoba.

These days Bertram enjoys the science of bee keeping as a hobby.

The province last week declared May 29 as Day of the Honey Bee, to recognize and celebrate how beekeeping in B.C. has grown from May 1858 when two hives arrived in Victoria Harbour into an industry that has a $250-million-a-year agricultural impact today.

South Okangan and Similkameen bee keep-ers help the argicultural industry through crop pollination by honey bees , which supports agricultural production in Canada to the tune of $1.5 billion per year.

Residents of the Regional District Okanagan Si-milkameen can participate in an online survey that is being conducted this year in conjunction with the regional district’s biannual telephone survey.

The information gathered will be used to guide the regional board in the strategic planning process. It enables the regional board to make informed decisions about where to best apply resources in the future which will make the biggest difference to citizens.

The online citizen survey provides an opportunity for those not involved in the telephone survey to make their feelings known to the RDOS.

The 2014 RDOS online citizen survey can be found at: http://www.fluidsurveys.com/s/RDOS_2014_Citi-zen_Survey/.

The survey is completely anonymous, and takes ap-proximately five minutes to complete.

The complete 2014 citizen survey will be available to download from the regional district website in coming weeks.

For further information, please contact Christy Malden, at (250) 492-0237 or [email protected].

EditorialAttitude aids

business recovery of downtown core

It looks busier in Keremeos business core these days, as the downtown block benefits from a new shot of energy and creativity injected by a few of the village’s new entre-preneurs.

Shared mutual interests, recognized by those trying to bring business to the down-town core is also helping to improve business fortunes for everyone on the block.

It was reassuring to hear that the bar-beque war wasn’t actually a competition at all, but the building of an idea that, hope-fully, will reward the two businesses who are creating something from it. The mutual respect the two businesses have for each other is also admirable. Rather than see themselves as competitors for the same dollar, they real-ize that a diverse business section that offers choice to customers will ultimately do more to drive business to everyone’s benefit.

It’s certainly a better attitude than seeing each other as competition and going to war with each other.

Keremeos’ business section looks healthier than it has in years. It seems there is someone on the street at any given time of day, and the sandwich boards and other signage in storefront windows give the area an appear-ance of vibrancy and purpose.

We can only hope these new attitudes con-tinue to grow - and hopefully spread.

The B.C. Liberal gov-ernment’s bill to divide the Agricultural Land Reserve into two zones has passed, after one of the nastier exchanges I’ve seen in a decade covering the B.C. legislature.

“You’re all a bunch of corrupt liars,” NDP agriculture critic Nicholas Simons yelled as the gov-ernment cut off a long and mostly repetitious debate.

Not to be outdone, cabi-net minister Bill Bennett replied to Simons’ heckle about Kootenay rancher Faye Street, one of Ben-nett’s most vocal support-ers as he pushed through changes to the land reserve to ease land use restrictions in rural zones.

Bennett advised Simons to offer his remarks to Street in person. “She’ll kick your ass,” Bennett said.

The on-the-record debate wasn’t much better. The government’s scheme,

Macdonald and other NDP critics predicted, is to unleash a flood of ALR land removals, to enrich B.C. Liberal supporters by allowing development on productive farmland.

That might be a valid concern, but there are a couple of factual problems. First, every appointment to the ALC, at the regional or provincial level, is made by the B.C. government. It’s been that way since the Dave Barrett administra-tion set it up in 1973.

Second, the regional panels are not new. The B.C. Liberals imposed them in 2003. If this was their method of corrupting the process to dismantle the ALR, that would have largely happened in the years since. Surely by this time they would have found enough greedy political hacks who hate farming to subvert the process.

I’ve written before about the legitimate concerns of places like Merritt and Vanderhoof and Dawson

Creek, where some ALR rules and decisions simply don’t make sense.

Strict secondary resi-dence rules are needed in areas with non-farm development pressure. In most rural areas, they are a mistake, and are frequently ignored.

The debate wasn’t entirely devoid of honesty and civility. Macdonald interrupted his string of baseless accusations to note that under the cur-rent system, 75 per cent of exclusion applications in the Kootenay region are approved. If that’s the case, what is really broken that needs to be fixed? It’s a good question that the government did not adequately answer.

And credit also goes to the new agriculture minis-ter, Kelowna-Lake Coun-try MLA Norm Letnick, who inherited a public relations mess left by the brief and boneheaded per-formance of Peace River North MLA Pat Pimm.

In the end, Letnick put

aside his partisan talking points and gave his per-sonal assurance that the government’s intention is to support farming in those places where non-farm in-come is the only thing that keeps people on the land.

As soon as the theatrics had died down, the B.C. NDP sent out a fundrais-ing plea to its members to help “save” the ALR. The party is broke and desperate after losing its fourth straight election, and it hopes to activate its declining donor base by portraying the changes as the imminent slaughter of its most sacred cow.

Voters have three years before the next election to assess this situation. If there is a flood of exclu-sions of prime agricultural land, then the NDP will be able to make its case that its warnings were at least partially true.

If this does not take place, then the govern-ment’s position will be vindicated. We’ll find out the truth.

Cawston grower Lee Hendsbee inspects his apple crop, damaged in an early season hail storm that hit the Cawston area on May 26. Hendsbee and several other Cawston growers suffered varying amounts of hail damage in the short but intense storm.

Last week was a difficult one for growers in the Lower Similkameen.

An early season hailstorm wiped out at least one apple crop in the valley, and damaged sev-eral others on Monday, May 26.

The storm delivered a tor-rential rain to Keremeos, inten-sifying as it moved in a southeast direction throught the valley. Dark, ominous clouds piled up on Orofino Mountain, where the storm gained inten-sity, pounding a number of acreages in the Cawston area with hail, most of them in the Upper Bench area.

One of the hardest hit or-chards was the two acres of apples operated by Lee Hends-bee and his wife Cheryl.

“It pretty much wiped out the apple crop,” Hendsbee said, “We’re not sure exactly what to do with the crop now - it’s a real dilemma.”

Hendsbee said the storm didn’t last much more than 15 minutes, but during seven of those minutes, wind driven, pea sized hail pelted his apple and grape crop.

“It’s hard to find a good ap-ple,” he said, combing through one of the trees.

“I’ve got no experience with damage caused by early season hail storms - two years ago we lost a crop to a late season storm.

“I guess we’ll wait until the June drop and see what hap-pens.”

Hendsbee said it would also depend on what decision his crop insurance company came to as well.

Hendsbee said the storm also dumped one third of an inch of rain and delivered wind gusts of 30 miles per hour to his acreage, noting in the past he once went 17 years without suffering hail damage.

Nearby, property owners John and Virginia Weber suf-fered some bruising to stems

and canes of their grape crop, as well as some torn leaves, but the two don’t expect long term consequences from the storm. Grape crops hit by the storm seemed to fare better overall, still at an early stage of growth.

Cawston orchardist Ron Schneider also reported some damage to his plums and nectar-ines, noting the peaches seemed to have survived better than the other two soft fruits.

“It’s the earliest I’ve ever seen for hail damage,” he said.

“Is it climate change? It seems like the frequency (of hail) is increasing.”

Crops in Oliver and Osoyoos also reported damage from Monday’s storm, which didn’t carry any special warnings from the weatherman. However, a weather system that was expect-ed to hit the region Wednesday, May 28, delivering heavy local-ized rain and thunderstorms, delivered little more than rain to the area.

The Grist Mill Heritage Club and Similka-meen Family Literacy are co-sponsoring a Heritage play writing contest .

The challenge is to write a half hour piece of entertainment, mixing fact and fiction, that rolls out a story about early settlers in the Lower Similkameen Valley especially around 1870 to 1900.

Suggested format for the play is a Victorian melodrama but other types of short historical pieces in drama or comedy for the time period will be welcome.

Sealed entries in an envelope bearing the author’s name and contact information will be held and then opened June 27 after the 5 p.m. deadline.

Entries may be mailed to: Play Contest c/o

Similkameen Family Literacy 720 Third Street, Keremeos, B.C. V0X 1N3, or dropped off at 310 Veteran’s Avenue Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to noon.

Provided there are at least five authors en-tered, the winning script will receive a $250 prize

The Heritage Players may seek to acquire non-winning scripts for use only through special arrangement with the author.

The winning script will become the prop-erty of the Heritage Players and the Grist Mill Heritage Club and will go into workshop and rehearsal for public performance with the author fully credited.

Entries deadline is 5 p.m. June 27.For further information and support regard-

ing the contest contact The Heritage Players at 250-499-5417.

Similkameen Elementary Secondary School students and Cawston Primary stu-dents gathered for a day of track and eld activities at SESS on Friday, May 30.

Grades four to seven participated in the local track event. Winning students quali ed for the District meet, being held in Osoyoos on June 13. All SESS elementary students could also earn points for their house league teams.

It took a special effort to organize the track meet this year said SESS teacher Rick Johnson, noting staff and the principal worked together to make it happen, in light of teachers’ reduced school day, precipi-tated by recent job action in the province’s schools. Senior students were put to work

helping record track and eld results throughout the day.

The students nished the afternoon with a 1.6 kilometre “marathon”, while students 11 and under participated in a 1.2 kilome-tre run.

Similkameen El-ementary Second-ary School teachers set up a picket line outside the school on May 28, part of a series of province wide rotating strikes staged by the prov-ince’s school dis-tricts. The strikes are meant to be a show of support by teachers to see the province and teach-ers union return to the bargaining table.

On Monday, May 26, parents of stu-dents from SESS were given a five page document pos-ing questions and answers related to the strike action.

“ We ’ r e m o r e concerned about c l a s s s i z e a n d composition than with wages,” said Ian Johnson, one of the teachers on the picket line last Wednesday.

“Those r ights were stripped away from us in 2002 and we’ve yet to see that issue settled.”

Jo h n s o n s a i d wages were a sec-ondary issue, noting that teachers have been working with-out a contract for a year, with no offers of retroactive pay, although the latest settlement offer is-

sued by the province would have provid-ed a $1,200 signing bonus. Johnson said the province has to give negotiators the ability to come to an agreement.

F o l l o w i n g Wednesday’s rotat-ing strike in District 53, an announce-m e n t wa s m a d e e a r ly T h u r s d ay, May 29 by the B.C. Teachers’ Federa-tion. The organiza-tion notified school d i s t r i c t s i t w i l l continue rotating strikes around the province next week, as negotiations con-tinue to settle their long-running dis-pute over pay and staffing levels.

Education Minis-ter Peter Fassbender reiterated the B.C. Public School Em-ployers’ Associa-tion latest offer of a $1,200 signing bo-nus and a six-year contract term, but indicated the union needs to modify its demands and stop strike action.

“I’m profoundly disappointed that while we’re still at the table, with all of the talk that’s been going on, that chil-dren and parents and communities are continuing to be held hostage and put in the middle of this dispute,” Fass-bender said.

Earlier this week, the organization representing public school parent advi-sory councils called for an immediate end to the teacher strike and lockout out of concern for students and fami-lies.

BC Confedera-tion of Parent Advi-sory Councils (BC-

CPAC) president Terry Berting stated in a press release that the “feud” be-tween the BC Teach-ers’ Federation and the government is having a detrimental effect on students, particularly those most vulnerable, and creating finan-cial hardship for struggling families.

The parent group was also concerned about the cancella-tion of extra-curric-ular activities, end-of-year celebrations and sporting events in some schools, and was urging the government and the BCTF to concen-trate their energies on achieving a new col lect ive agree-ment.

“Successful out-comes for all stu-dents — not just those graduating from Grade 12 — are being affected by this labour dis-pute,” Berting stat-ed. “This has got to stop.”

Parents are also encouraged to write to Education Minis-ter Peter Fassbender and BCTF president Jim Iker explain-ing how the rotating strikes and lockout are affecting fami-lies.

S o c i a l m e d i a pages suggested a number of students in School District 53 would stage a walkout of their own on June 4, in protest of both sides behaviour in the dis-pute. The students see themselves as pawns, w i th the most to lose from the job action.

The schedule of one-day walkouts for this week will see Similkameen Ele-

mentary Secondary School staff walk out on Thursday, June 5.

community

Evin Hartfield has been a member of the Keremeos and District Volunteer Fire Department for 17 years.

“I wanted to help the community,” he said, “it seemed like a neat thing to do.”

So far, his expectations have been met, with respect to what he hoped to get out

of it.“Helping the community was my first

reason for joining, and is a big reason I’m still on,” he said, “I enjoy the camerade-rie and I’m good with what I receive in compensation - from a monetary point of view, I really wasn’t expecting anything when I joined, thinking it was totally a volunteer effort.”

Hartfield often responds from his

home in Olalla, noting he can often be at the fire hall within five minutes.

“There are certain times of the year when I can make second truck,” he said. The 40 year old firefighter said that under his present circumstances he manages to make about 50 per cent of all calls.

“ I think it all works out,” he said, “you give what you can.”

Long time firefighter still sees value of department in helping peopleBy Steve Arstad [email protected]

The Value in Knowing R-ValueIf you are in the midst of renovating or building your home, it is likely you have heard the term “R-Value” being thrown around. Understanding what it means and its importance is the real test. Measuring the ability to limit the heat flow trans-ferred through insulation is known as R-Value, say specialists in this field. Augmenting the traditional insulation in walls and ceilings is not typically regarded by industry specialists as an effective short-term or long-term solution, since it does not offer air sealing capabilities the way modern alternatives do. Spray foam insulation, like that available from innovators Icynene, provides a consistent R-Value plus air seal in one step without the potential for sagging, settling or gaping that traditional insula-tion might. Adding further layers of insulation in a traditional environment just to increase R-Value eventually proves superfluous and ineffective with very little payback over the long-term. The United States Department of Energy says that compressed insulation will not provide its full R-Value. Moreover, the installed R-Value will differ from the insulation R-Value itself due to heat flow around the home making it imperative that the in-sulation is properly installed by a professional who knows their product and how they work.Homeowners should stay ahead of the curve and understand what is right for their home to ensure its long-term sustainability.

20 WAYS TO GET GOOD KARMA

1. Take into account that great love and great achievements involve great risk. 2. When you lose, don’t lose the lesson.3. Follow the three R’s:

• Respect for self, • Respect for others and • Responsibility for all your actions.

4. Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck.5. Learn the rules so you know how to break them properly.6. Don’t let a little dispute injure a great relationship.7. When you realize you’ve made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.8. Spend some time alone every day.9. Open your arms to change, but don’t let go of your values.10. Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.11. Live a good, honorable life. Then when you get older and think back, you’ll be able to enjoy it a second

time.12. A loving atmosphere in your home is the foundation for your life.13. In disagreements with loved ones, deal only with the current situation. Don’t bring up the past.14. Share your knowledge. It is a way to achieve immortality.15. Be gentle with the earth.16. Once a year, go someplace you’ve never been before.17. Remember that the best relationship is one in which your love for each other exceeds your need for each

other.18. Judge your success by what you had to give up in order to get it.19. If you want others to be happy, practice compassion.20. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.

COOL DOWN A BURNWhen you burn your skin, the damage continues to occur until you can cool down the area of the burn. Best advice is to immerse the burned area in cold water (no ice) for at least 15 minutes. You’ll find this reduces the pain as well.

ALTERNATIVE TO DEETPeople looking for an alternative to DEET as an insect repellant might look for products containing icaridin. It is effective against mosquitoes, black flies and ticks and is available as a pump spray, aerosol spray and towelettes. It is safe for adults and children over the age of 6 months. Examples of brands containing this include Deep Woods and Avon.

GOOD SOURCE OF CALCIUMLooking for a good source of calcium in food. Try sardines. Two ounces of this little fish provides 240 mg of calcium because you are eating the fine bones of the fish. Sardines also contain significant amounts of vitamins D and B-12 and omega-3 fatty acids.

MEDICATION EXPIRATION DATESExpiry dates on medication have a little leeway. They don’t lose all their potency on the day of expiration. But there’s one medication you want to be sure is “in date” and that is your EpiPen. The EpiPen is kept on hand by people with very serious allergies and can save lives. If you have an EpiPen, check the date. If it’s close to expiration, get a new one.If you have any questions about the EpiPen or other medications used to treat allergies, talk to our pharmacists. We’d be happy to share our knowledge.
