KESWICK COMMUNITY HEALTH
2018 • FALL ISSU E
2 WISE & WELL CENTER FOR HEALTHY LIVING
The Keswick Wise & Well Story Keswick is undergoing a
transformation, but it hasn’t happened overnight. For more than
five years, this Baltimore health resource, once only known as a
nursing home, has offered community health services both in the
main building on its 40th Street campus and throughout the
region.
As popularity for this programming grew, Keswick made the decision
to invest in a dedicated space for older people in our area to
pursue their health and well-being goals. In fall 2018, Keswick
opened the doors to its new Wise & Well Center for Healthy
Living, the hub for Keswick Community Health activities. The
building, located on Keswick’s campus in the former Bauernschmidt
Building, has been intentionally designed with older adults and
well-being in mind.
The first of its kind in Maryland, the membership-based Center
offers classes, coaching and personalized services across multiple
dimensions of wellness. Wise & Well aims to serve as a partner
in your health journey and aid in staying active and connected –
the proven foundation for healthy aging. This welcoming space
offers the opportunity for older people to attend educational
programming on a myriad of topics, socialize and take advantage of
numerous resources so they are able to live well, age well and be
well.

2 WISE & WELL CENTER FOR HEALTHY LIVING
Welcome to Wise & Well Fall 2018! “Aging is not lost youth but
a new stage of opportunity and strength.” - Betty Friedan
Welcome to The Wise & Well Center for Healthy Living! I am
thrilled that you are interested in taking this next step in your
health journey. I encourage you to explore the many classes,
activities and programs in the pages that follow.
If you have joined us for Wise & Well classes in the past then
you know that we approach health and healthy living from a slightly
different perspective. We recognize that this is your journey and
that you, like each of us, are unique with your own individual
goals, successes and challenges. This is a partnership and the Wise
& Well team is here to support, guide, challenge and celebrate
with you as you decide “what’s next.” We also expect that we will
learn from you and that you, if you are interested, will have the
opportunity to share, teach, guide and support other Wise &
Well members.
So what’s on the horizon this fall? We are pleased to share with
you a wide array of offerings; we hope that you will find that
class you have been meaning to take or perhaps a new one that
piques your interest. There are many from which to choose – Tai
Chi, Art, Brain Health, Yoga, Cooking and more. Yet this is just a
start…part of our work this fall is to see what works. We’re
learning about what interests you AND how to improve the potential
for simply better days for you and your families. As we consider
new ideas for Wise & Well programs, please make suggestions of
what you would like to see in your Center. Your voice is important
and we will follow your lead whenever possible. For instance,
self-defense was suggested and viola, we will be partnering with
CHANA to offer that program soon. Stay Tuned!
We want your Wise & Well membership to be useful to you –
meaning we really want to see you at the Center! We know that
having a sense of purpose, moving more and engaging with others is
the key to well-being, at every age. As described by Gene Cohen, a
pioneer in healthy living as we age, said, “the unique combination
of age, experience and creativity can produce exciting inner growth
and infinite potential.” We can all be Wise & Well. Looking
forward to seeing you around the Center!
Be Well, Susan Susan Bender Wise & Well Team Leader

12 WISE & WELL CENTER FOR HEALTHY LIVING
Your Wise & Well Journey Wise & Well is all about how we
can take steps today towards having a better day tomorrow. Those
specific steps vary for each of us yet we do not have to figure it
all out by ourselves. Most of us move forward with more confidence
when we are not traveling entirely alone. That is what this Wise
& Well community is all about.
To get the most out of your Wise & Well membership, please join
us for the following, at no charge! These courses are included with
your membership.
Your Best Life: Choose one of these dates and times (Refreshments

A group experience led by a Wise & Well coach, this gathering
walks members through the big-picture of life and well-being. How
we feel tomorrow is not just about our physical health. When we
consider life across the many dimensions of well- being we often
get ideas about where we want to go next. Our goals, what we want
to do tomorrow (and next year!) help create a path forward - your
Wise & Well journey.
We’ll discuss:
• Dimensions of Well-Being: A guide through an individual
self-assessment • Mapping Your Story: Thinking about where you want
to go • Journey from Here to There: Goals to get to your best life
• Special Guest: A Wise & Well member shares her/his journey
with you • Expertise of a Wise & Well Coach

A peer-to-peer group experience led by a Wise & Well coach,
this gathering is designed to provide a moment to reflect on where
we were, where we are, and where we are headed. Sometimes we take
detours, or a more scenic route, and sometimes just run out of
fuel! Even if we are not where we expected, pausing creates the
opportunity to re-evaluate. Sometimes that means asking for help or
directions, or for someone to join us on the road, or for help
figuring out how to maintain enough fuel for the ride. We can get
back on track or change course to get where we want to be.
You will have an opportunity to: • Reflect on where you are • Learn
from one another – Share “That Happened to Me!” stories (or not!) •

Celebrate! (Refreshments Served.)
Date: Monday, December 17 Time: 2:00pm - 4:00pm
Sometimes planned and sometimes spontaneous, celebrations
acknowledge successes for ourselves and for others and inspire us
to strive for endless possibilities, and…they are just plain FUN.
At Wise & Well, we’ll get the ball rolling with a few planned
days of celebration every year. We also encourage members to
celebrate and come up with your own ways to share the joy - because
smiling is contagious, and it is really, really good for you!
• Healthier and Happier! Smiling helps reduce the level of
stress-enhancing hormones like cortisol, adrenaline, and dopamine…
and reduces blood pressure!
• Inspired! Feeling inspired is often the key to being engaged,
productive and successful – at whatever that means to you.

30 WISE & WELL CENTER FOR HEALTHY LIVING
Wise & Well – A Learning Community At Keswick Community Health,
part of our work is to see what works. We’re learning too, about
how to improve the potential for simply better days for older
people and families. That means we measure our progress. How well
are we doing? Are we making a difference? Are there positive
outcomes? To get there, we ask for your thoughts, we collect health
metrics and we follow up again to see if together, we made
progress. We never share your personal information without your
permission. We use your personal information when we are in
discussion with you for your benefit only. We use aggregated data –
without any identifiable information – when we evaluate how well we
did teaching a class or guiding a group of members through the Wise
& Well program.
We know that there is more to learn about how to do a better job
creating improved possibilities for all of us as we age. We are
committed to both sharing proven practice with you today while also
helping to build a stronger knowledge base towards a better
tomorrow for all older people. Thank you for joining us in this
effort!
